One famous scholar called it “the crown of Paul's writings.” Another called it “the queen of the epistles.” The former president of Princeton Seminary said that to Ephesians he owed his very life.  He went on to say: “[In Ephesians] I saw a new world. Everything was new, I had a new outlook. New experiences. New attitudes to other people. I loved God. Jesus Christ became the center of everything. I had been quickened. Episode #612: “You do create a dependency. You create a long-term relationship that also you can leverage into political influence as well.” Ian Storey, a principal fellow at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, sees that dependency as the thread connecting Russia's military, energy, diplomatic and nuclear ties with Myanmar. The relationship is economically small, but it gives Moscow influence in precisely the sectors the military government has needed most since the 2021 coup. Myanmar began turning toward Russian weapons in the early 2000s after years of heavy dependence on China. Russian fighter aircraft, helicopters and training later became embedded in the military's capabilities, creating continuing requirements for spare parts, maintenance, munitions and technical expertise. Since the coup, Russia has also supplied oil and refined products, including aviation fuel, while the two governments developed ruble-kyat payment arrangements and other ways to conduct trade under sanctions. The political exchange is equally transactional. Myanmar's military government endorsed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, while Moscow has provided diplomatic recognition and continued military support. Yet Russia will not sacrifice its wider ASEAN interests for Myanmar, and Storey stresses that the country remains a relatively minor Russian market. Nuclear cooperation could make the relationship much harder to unwind. After more than two decades of discussions and training, Russia has agreed to provide Myanmar with a small modular reactor, although construction has not begun. If built, the plant would tie Myanmar to Russian financing, operation, fuel and technical services for decades. Storey doubts Moscow would commit major resources to rescue the military if it faced collapse. Russia remains a secondary power in Southeast Asia, pursuing narrow advantages in arms, energy and nuclear technology. For now, however, those narrow advantages align closely with the military regime's needs, leaving Myanmar exposed to a partnership that can be deeply consequential without ever becoming deeply committed.

Dear Hillside: Wasn't last Sunday's worship gathering a thrill? I'm still thinking about the stories our fellow Hillsiders told about God “having their backs” through scary and even excruciating circumstances (Note to self: don't forget to attach the hose). I'm also still thinking of the needs our fellow Hillsiders shared: the need for healing, the need for strength, and the need for God to envelope struggling loved ones in his powerful arms. What a privilege to hear what's on the hearts of our brothers and sisters in this family. What will God do tomorrow when we gather again? Who knows as we don't control him. And yet, every worship service is rich with Holy Spirit-possibility because the living Lord is genuinely present with us when we gather before him. So, let's come to the hill tomorrow with great expectations for how God is going to guide and speak and move. Regarding the specifics, in addition to singing to God, imagining our future, and hearing an exciting Hillside update, we'll be taking Communion. Dear Hillside: Ever had the experience of discovering a connection between two places, people, or things that you didn't think were connected. It happened to me recently on a trip back from Barstow. Trapped in Highway 580 traffic, I ducked onto Vasco Road, wound through the rolling green hills, and eventually entered downtown Clayton by the “backdoor.” Up until that point what lay beyond Clayton was a shadowy mystery. It happened to me with music in the 80's when I learned that solo pop artist Don Henley was the drummer of the rock band the Eagles. It was weird and wonderful to think that the serious-looking guy who sang “The Boys of Summer” and “All She Wants to do is Dance” was thumping the drums on Eagles hits “Heartache Tonight” and “Already Gone.” It happened again when I learned that Hillsider Ed Hultgren is the uncle of Hillsider Sharon Singh (who knew they were kin? Do they have keys to each other's home? Naturally, I wondered). Well, realizing there was a connection between two seemingly unrelated things happened again this week in my study of James 5:7-11. I discovered that our James passage has a telling link to another passage from the Gospels, but that without an “X-Ray machine” it's difficult to spot (fortunately, I have one). Anyway, I'm excited to share with you what God gave me. By the way, we're now down to two weeks in our Just Do the Word series. The Church is the Family of God.  Family means something different to a lot of people in the world than what God originally meant for it to be.  The Church, is also seen through the eyes of the Apostle Paul, as a body.  We cannot function properly if the body is not working in harmony with itself.  When families and our physical bodies do not work in harmony that is usually considered a dysfunctional family or a sick body.  If that is so, then we need to discern the body.  Which means we need to go to God and ask Him what is going on.  Why are we sick and dysfunctional, and then allow the Holy Spirit to show us so,  we can discern the body properly and get back to what He has called the Church, Family of God, to do in the world.

Dear Hillside: This week in the third-to-last message of our James series, Just Do the Word, we'll be experiencing another “cold plunge,” and in more ways than one. Nevertheless, we're confident that Pastor James' strong words in James 5:1-6 are our loving God's inspired words, so we'll listen securely and with the intention to “do” what we've “heard” in the power of the Spirit he poured into us. Our world seems to be falling apart and instead moving forward it appears that we are going in reverse.  However, God see a whole other picture of our world. He is our hope and our future.  We can see change happen in our world when the Church rises up and live as the true sons and daughter of God.  Part of RLM's core values is that we believe that the world can still be changed for the glory of God.

When we are born we are born into a race that whether we like it or not we are running.  As we grow older we realize that the race is not as easy as we thought it would be.  The apostle Paul encouraged us to run in such a way that we would win.  Yes, we know there can only be one winner but run as if we are that winner.  If we don't we will give up and coast through life and miss out on a life that God wanted us to have that would not only be amazing but life changing for others.
