Picture this: Georgia, the Hollywood of the South, buzzing with film crews, booming soundstages, and the magic of moviemaking. As the Assistant Vice Chancellor for the University System of Georgia, Scott Votaw heads up the Georgia Film Academy – a powerhouse program that's turning out the next generation of filmmaking superstars. Think of it as Hogwarts for aspiring filmmakers, but instead of magic wands, they learn the secrets of cinematography, editing, and special effects. GFA doesn't just wave a magic wand and poof you're a director. They collaborate with top-notch colleges across the state, hooking students up with real-world experience and connecting them with industry giants. They offer courses that are more than just book learnin' – think hands-on workshops, industry internships, and even the chance to work on actual film sets! So, if you're dreaming of a career behind the camera, whether it's directing the next blockbuster or crafting the perfect soundtrack, Scott and his team at GFA are your ticket to Hollywood North. They're turning Georgia into a hub for cinematic excellence, one talented filmmaker at a time. Web: https://georgiafilmacademy.edu About GFA: Since the Georgia Film Academy began operations in 2015, economic activity generated by the film industry in Georgia continues to rise at exponential levels. The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) announced that, during fiscal year 2021, the film and television industry set a new record with $4 billion in direct spending on productions in the state. The Georgia Film Academy's efforts in building a professional workforce able to meet increased production demand is widely regarded to be a primary driver in this sudden and dramatic rise in economic impact on the state. The GFA is widely recognized by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), labor unions, and numerous competing states and countries as “the gold standard” in film and television production workforce training. The GFA offers industry certifications in Film & Television Production, Post-Production, Digital Entertainment, Esports & Game Development, and helps institutions to develop curriculum and training directly aligned to the high-demand careers that exist in the state. In partnership with IATSE 479 and major film and television production and digital entertainment companies like Disney, Netflix, HBO, Skillshot Media, Axis Replay, and others, professionally-qualified instructors, equipment, and training facilities prepare learners to be assets to the industry following completion of GFA's certification. Furthermore, with GFA's unique-in-the-nation internship/apprenticeship program, students have the opportunity to go straight to work in these industries, which offers a paid, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Georgia Film Academy supports a collaboration of institutions of the University System of Georgia, Technical College System of Georgia, and Independent institutions that offer professional courses in film, television, digital entertainment, Esports, and game development. In fact, right now Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson are in town filming a major film project! We caught up with Brad Parry, President & CEO of Calgary Economic Development and CEO of the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund, for his thoughts on what has led to Calgary's growth as a filming destination. Next, according to the latest data from ‘Parks Canada', visitation to Banff National Park has increased by 30 percent over the past decade. Are these tourism levels sustainable, or has the national park reached a tourism tipping point? We tackle the topic with David Matys, VP of Destination Development., Banff and Lake Louise. Finally, it sounds like something out of a ‘comedy' sketch! “Dead Butt Syndrome”. What exactly is it and could you be at risk? We get the ‘bottom line' on this interesting condition from Dr. Ted Jablonski, our ‘on-call' family physician.

Murf Laidlaw was born and raised playing multiple sports in Prince George, British Columbia. He was a national champion youth skier in his younger days, then turned to pro volleyball after graduating high school from Kelly Road Secondary School. Murf's first career out of high school made him famous. He landed a career with Molson Marketing in Vancouver and officially became knowing as "Murf the Pilsner Guy." He created the slogan “I Love My Life Right Now” which went viral across the country, especially during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Although Murf found his love for entertainment during this career, he eventually got burnt out from the party lifestyle and missed competing in his passion: competitive volleyball. Murf then started training with the national beach volleyball team at 37 years old. But then he hurt himself, and briefly felt lost, which serendipitously led to acting magically fell into his lap… Since then, Murf has enjoyed many successes in the acting world, primarily out of Vancouver, which has become known as “Hollywood North” over the years. The pandemic changed the acting industry, so now Murf can live in his hometown of Prince George and still act, while making fun commercials here in his hometown with local businesses. With his golden age Hollywood looks and fierce ambition, Madison Smith is a rising force making his impression on the entertainment industry. From a young age, Madison always wanted to be an actor, however he instead would go on to attend college on a baseball scholarship and pursue a career in marketing. After attending a year of school though, he couldn't shake the feeling he was on the wrong path, so Madison followed his acting dreams, packed his bags, and made the move to Vancouver (AKA. Hollywood North) and enrolled in Vancouver Academy of Dramatic Arts. After graduating from the academy in 2011, Madison quickly began booking roles and has since appeared in Netflix's ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina', The CW's ‘Supergirl', ‘Supernatural', ‘Legends of Tomorrow' and ‘Riverdale, and SyFy's ‘Aftermath', but is most well knows for his roles on CBS' ‘Salvation' and Netflix's ‘The Order'. Most recently, Madison can be seen as Robby Watts in Hallmark's ‘Nikki & Nora: Sister Sleuths', and starring in the upcoming Christmas Rom-Com ‘Meeting Mr. Christmas'. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/steven-cuoco/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steven-cuoco/support

Welcome everybody back to another episode of WestVancouver.com / West Vancouver Magazine Podcast. Here in Hollywood North, we have lots of glam. And live on air with me today is one of those people who makes it all happen. We have Shawn Williamson here with us from Brightlight Pictures. It doesn't get any better than this when it comes to lights, camera – action! Shawn, thank you for joining us. Shawn Oh, thank you, my pleasure. Cat Now I can only imagine what you've seen over 20 years of movie-making, T.V. and films. You've been involved in all aspects of it. Rumour also has it you're from North Vancouver. So, where did this all start? Shawn Well, I did. I grew up in North Van. I went to Argyle. And so I'm a North Shore boy originally. But it started organically out of the theatre. I went to university for a very brief moment, and discovered it wasn't really for me, and ended up working at the Arts Club Theatre where I did an apprenticeship and ultimately worked in all kinds of different technical and behind the scenes positions over the years - and ended up there as a stage manager before I transitioned into film and television. Cat So you weren't the guy up front doing the tap-dancing - you were always the guy kind of behind the scenes helping put it all together? (laughs) Is that kind of accurate? Shawn I've never been on stage. (laughs) I have no talent whatsoever. So I'm very, very happy behind the camera. Cat Well, that's completely not true. Because you clearly have absolute mounds of talent to be able to survive in what is an incredibly difficult industry and sometimes made more difficult by the fact that you're Canadian. I know L.A. is a tough scene as well for anybody looking to make it big, but you've clearly made it big. So what exactly would you say your job title is? Tell us, what does somebody in your position do? What is your day like? (Use the timestamps below to forward ahead in the podcast above) Cast and Crew of ABC's The Good Doctor - from left, David Shore, Shawn Williamson and Freddie Highmore. Photo credit: Sony Pictures Used with Permission 02:47 - Shawn Well, it really does vary. Different producers do very different jobs. Some are working in development, finding scripts and packaging them, or putting them together with other talent, with actors, directors and studio money. And some producers, which is how I started, just grew up making movies. Vancouver has generally been a destination for foreign films. And it certainly now has blossomed and grown and matured into a proper production destination where you can finance and package films. But earlier on, it was a destination. So I grew up in the industry making movies and television shows for U.S. studios or foreign financiers. And so, part of my job originally was simply to make the movie. And you are effectively the employer on set. You're the person that deals with the creative elements. You juggle all the elements that you would think - actors, directors, the studio's desires, and the script. So you have a budget you're working towards, and you're spending effectively every part of that budget. But it's largely people management, and our philosophical view in producing comes from what I learned at the Arts Club as a stage manager. 05:36 - Cat Wow, well, I'm going to guess that there isn't a producer's school - this is something you had to really get in and get your hands on, as you said, use your experience. But it sounds like you really need to hone your focus and your talents on keeping all these balls in the air. I imagine the bigger the story, the bigger the script, and the bigger the cast, the more it can really run wildly out of control. So that sounds like that's the hardest part – but what is the best part of your job? 06:18 - Shawn The best part is the people – and telling stories. We're making television, we're telling stories, we're making films and such - it doesn't really matter when yo...

Born in Mexico City, Mimi ditched a pre-med career path early on and instead moved up to Vancouver from Texas in 2006 to pursue her passion in the film industry - and ultimately a career in the Assistant Director Department. Since then, she’s worked on films including Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, Alien vs Predator 2 and the 50 Shades of Grey series. She's spent the last few years working as a 1st and 2nd AD on the CW hit television series Supergirl. We discuss the pace of working on TV shows vs films (and the Assistant Director's role in each), the differences in American and Canadian on-set lingo and her own experiences as a woman working in film.

If you don't recognize this face it is because she is the mastermind behind the scenes, as Sabrina mentions in this episode “the glue that holds this together”. In today's episode, we are simply just checking in. Episode 8 marks the halfway point for Season One and it is time we hear from all of you. We want to know what your burning questions are. Do you have a topic suggestion you NEED to hear about? Are you or do you know the perfect Mama nominee to be a guest on the show? On today's show, we recap episode seven all the way back to episode one and allow you to be involved in shaping the episodes of the future. Who better to discuss than our very own producer Meghan Krmpotic? Meghan has always been passionate about the entertainment industry, leading to a successful ten-plus year career in television production. She worked on numerous number one Canadian reality TV shows before taking a break to realize her true dream job, being a Mama! Understanding the fast-paced world of Hollywood North was not conducive to a growing family she joined forces with an incredible health and wellness company and rapidly worked her way to the VP level. She is now a Regional Vice President with Arbonne International, an upcoming contributor in You've Got This Mama, Too, our incredible producer and mama of three awesome little ones Gracie (7) Alexander (4) and Frankie (2). Meghan and Sabrina start with recapping Episode 7- Canna Mommin' they revisit some funny web browser stories and talk about their opinions and predictions on what legalization in Canada means. “At the end of the day, I think people mostly fear change,” says Sabrina. Meghan agrees and thinks this is a step in the right direction. Change can be a good thing. They move on to Episode 5 - Let's Talk About Sex brought to attention by more funny web browser stories. This episode is really great because it dives into the practical and tangible tools around sex after babies. For those who haven't tuned in yet, there are even links to porn, ask Meghan's hubby about that one. The ladies move on to Episode 6 - Moving Through Fertility. This one hits home for Meghan having dealt with multiple personal losses. Meghan shares some of her journey into motherhood with the listeners and the ladies dig deep into mindset, positivity, and perspective when moving through a difficult season in life. “Sharing our journey is what is needed to move forward” Meghan claims and talks about how we need to support one another rather than compare our stories. We need to break out of the code of silence and shame. This is a good segue into speaking about Episode 4 - Mommin Is A Mindset. They revisit the concept of “feel the heal” from author Kristin Hallett. Meghan also talks about how mindset plays a huge part in mom-life “we are always a work in progress, it is important to remember that these little people are mirrors reflecting parts of you that need work”.  The Mamas talk about the big picture and Meghan gives the priceless advice that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Life is too short to not take everything as a learning experience. Sabrina quotes “grow through what you go through” and talks about how all things are temporary, the good and the bad. “We are always a work in progress, it is important to remember that these little people are mirrors reflecting parts of you that need work”. ~ Meghan Krmpotic Next, they reflect back to Episode 3 - Threenagers vs. Teenagers and discuss their boys turning four, starting school and all of the fun that comes with that season, reminiscing on the threenager days of not so long ago. They both question why starting school comes with an onslaught of illness and endless gross and again remind each other that this is all temporary much like the baby brain from e001. Lastly, the ladies revisit Episode 1 - Insane In The Baby Brain...

Sevé Schelenz likes brownies, baseball, beer and making movies (damn, it should have been another “b” word). He began creating films at 15 with a VHS camera. Now considered an adult, Sevé has made two horror feature films. The first was entitled Skew and some people liked it. The second is Peelers. It's awesome. Sevé likes his brownies with nuts. Peelers played Shriekfest in 2016!  In 2001, Sevé created his own production company called Sleep Apnea Productions Inc. His first project was a six-episode comedy series entitled Great Scott!! …television that bothers you. The series was sold to national station The Comedy Network and the local affiliate CTV station. After this sale, Sevé created several pilot episodes for television. He also went on to complete a 13-episode comedy series entitled Stand Up on Whistler Mountain.   Lisa DeVita was born and raised in “Hollywood North,” aka Vancouver, BC.  Having decided to fully immerse herself into the role of writer, Lisa took two courses within the field to see which one appealed: Copywriting and Screenwriting. The former, while fun, didn't hold the engaging storytelling she longed for, while the latter, unequivocally captured her interest forever. She immediately enrolled in the Writing for Film and Television Program at Vancouver Film School, whose alumni include Kevin Smith and Neill Blomkamp. Upon graduation from film school, Lisa moved to Las Vegas to launch her filmmaking career. She worked as a freelance writer and amateur poker player to make ends meet.   After four years in Vegas and no significant developments in her writing and film career Lisa moved back to Vancouver, BC.  She recently wrote and produced the full-length feature film, Peelers.

Link:http://ew.com/tv/2017/02/10/spoiler-room-flash-once-upon-time-arrow/    Vigilante Attacks Oliver Queen in "Fighting Fire With Fire" (Date: 10 Feb 2017) He's gone after Team Arrow before -- but always in the name of his own ultra-violent code of justice. So why is Vigilante trying to kill Mayor Oliver Queen? Fans will find out on March 1, when the DC antihero returns to menace city hall. Synopsis: Oliver (Stephen Amell) faces his biggest challenge yet as mayor. Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) continues down her dark path with Helix. After Vigilante attacks Oliver while he's acting as the mayor, Diggle (David Ramsey) leads the team in a mission to stop Vigilante once and for all. "I'm old, so what does this mean? It means that I grew up on St. Elsewhere and Picket Fences and LA Law. I grew up in a time where it was commonplace, like literally every week, for a one-hour drama to tackle the issues of the day. Somewhere along the line we got away from that -- like, the whole industry got away from that. And now you've got like Blackish and Carmichael Show, but as far as network dramas are concerned? Really not tackling current events, current issues. So we went into season 5 with the desire to. It's the fifth season; we've hopefully earned the freedom to, in 23 episodes of television, you can have 22 episodes of candy and one episode of vegetables. We sort of felt that gun violence felt like the right topic, because of its topicality but also because of the level of gun violence that's on Arrow. We could have done an episode on abortion, but that's not really where the show lives, so gun violence sort of felt like the right thing to tackle." Where's Thea?' Willa's [contracted for] 14 out of 23 episodes this year,” Guggenheim revealed. “She's not in all 23. That's not her contract. We've had to write around that.” Contractual matters also may prove a hurdle in bringing Katie Cassidy back for another encore as one Laurel or another, even though Cassidy (as reported over the summer) entered the season with one of those #DCTV-wide deals that theoretically would allow her to pop up on Arrow or any of its many offspring. “We have an idea for how to see [Katie] again, but we haven't made a deal with her,” Guggenheim shared. “She's not a series regular anymore, so we have to make a contract with her, and she's got to be available. We haven't had those conversations. But… we know exactly what we do want to do. Link:http://tvline.com/2017/02/13/arrow-season-5-katie-cassidy-contract-status-willa-holland/   Will Arrow Bring Back Suicide Squad Characters? Here's What David Ramsey Says (Date: 13 Feb 2017) David Ramsey recently spoke with CinemaBlend about all things John Diggle, and he told me this about Digg's future with the Suicide Squad on Arrow: “I can say that we have all the elements. Part of what John Diggle brings to the team is his relationship with ARGUS through his wife Lyla. We're waiting to see how that plays itself out. Diggle was freed last week, and Oliver said to him 'You can go home and hug your wife and son.' So that's a real viable part of Diggle that we have always seen on camera, but it would be nice to see more because he's married to the leader of the Suicide Squad. What does that play out? How does that look? What are those conversations like? We have all the elements of it... I think we have the makings of it. ARGUS is a real viable part of our whole universe, of Legends, Flash, and Arrow. And Diggle just so happens to be married to the leader of ARGUS, so it's right there ready for the picking.” Link:http://www.cinemablend.com/television/1624570/will-arrow-bring-back-suicide-squad-characters-heres-what-david-ramsey-says   Arrow EPs Tease Thea's Role Going Forward in Season 5 (Date: 15 Feb 2017) "She's headed in a direction that's very similar to where her mother was before she was killed in Season 2. We're excited about it." revealed Wendy Mericle. "I'm actually really excited about her storyline because we're taking her to a place where she's been dealing with all of these issues the same way Oliver has, with her bloodlust and with her other elements of her past. And this season's going to find her in a similar place but for very different reasons. There's gonna be a great scene coming up between Oliver and Thea that's one of my favorites on the show." Link:http://comicbook.com/2017/02/16/arrow-thea-queen-willa-holland-season-five/   Arrow EP Teases Prometheus's Next Move (Date: 15 Feb 2017) According to one of the show's executive producers, however, that is all about to change with next week's episode, entitled 'The Sin-Eater'. Marc Guggenheim recently revealed that not only will the villain appear in the February 22nd episode, but his past actions will start to connect. Guggenheim wants fans to keep an eye out for the conclusion of the episode, as it will particularly reveal parts of the villain's motive. "The episode ends, I think, with sort of the next key move in Prometheus' grand plan." Link:http://comicbook.com/2017/02/16/arrow-marc-guggenheim-prometheus/   Arrow EP: Oliver Will Make Star City Better -- As Mayor (Date: 15 Feb 2017) "One of the things we went into season five with the mindset of is Oliver's mayor, so without it turning into The West Wing, how are we going to find ways to have Oliver be active as mayor, and to everyone's surprise, be a good mayor, end up being a good mayor," explained executive producer Marc Guggenheim during a screening of tonight's episode, "Spectre of the Gun." "And you'll start to see, actually – and this is true in next week's episode, in episode 14 – Thea's going to make a good case to Oliver, of all people, for all the things he's accomplished as mayor, and you start to see like, oh wait, in the first 13 episodes, he actually kind of did some stuff. And he's not done yet. Obviously, the season's not done yet. But we definitely went into the season with the goal of showing that Oliver is actually much better at this job than you might expect." Link:http://comicbook.com/2017/02/15/arrow-ep-oliver-will-make-star-city-better--as-mayor/   Arrow: Marc Guggenheim On What Makes Oliver Different From his Villains (Date: 15 Feb 2017) This season on Arrow, Ollie has been even more affected by that conundrum. He constantly finds himself toe-ing the line between what's right and wrong. According to Marc Guggenheim, Oliver is going to continue that struggle throughout this season. Not only will the rest of this season see Oliver explore that struggle, but the show will also explore what that means for Arrow's entire world. "One of the things we are doing in the back half of Season 5 is really getting underneath that and what that means, not just in terms of morality but in terms of psychology -- specifically Oliver's psychology. There's things about Oliver's killing that you have yet to learn." However, The CW series is taking a slow burn approach to that, but she finally gets a mask in these new images. Snapped on the streets of New Westminster, a city just southeast of Vancouver, the images reveal rows of 1940s-era automobiles, as well as actors Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber and John Barrowman in period attire. According to Hollywood North.Buzz, the scenes were to involve car chases with gangsters, but no singing. Link:http://www.cbr.com/the-flash-set-photos-hint-at-musicals-1940s-setting/   The Flash: First Look at Grodd's Nemesis Solovar! (Date: 16 Feb 2017) The CW has now released a new batch of photos from "Attack on Gorilla City," including the first two images of Solovar. As you can see, Solovar — who is being voiced by Keith David (The Thing, Community) — is being depicted as a giant, white gorilla. That's a noticeable departure from his comic book counterpart, who looks like a regular gorilla but wears a fancy red cape. Created by writer John Broome and artist Carmine Infantino, Solovar made his first appearance in The Flash #106 alongside Gorilla Grodd and Pied Piper. That's all set to change with a crossover between the Batman and Flash titles, with Tom King, Jason Fabok, Joshua Williamson, and Howard Porter all set to put the world's greatest detectives on a path to find out the significance of that blood-stained smiley face. The crossover begins April 19 in Batman #21. NCM will help stores tag their details onto a 15 or 30 second DC Universe: Rebirth ad and place it before appropriate movies playing.
