Clark Datchler: On this episode, we talk to songwriter Clark Datchler from the band Johnny Hates Jazz. Clark's songwriting first came to prominence in 1987 when his Band Johnny Hates Jazz released the single 'Shattered Dreams' which became a top 10 hit all over the world including no 1 on the US adult contemporary charts and has had millions of radio plays since. They went on to make music videos for MTV with David Fincher and Clark also wrote the follow-up singles and worldwide hits "I Don't Want to Be a Hero" "Turn Back the Clock" and "Heart of Gold".Just as the band had found international success Clark found himself dissatisfied with the direction the band was being taken in and decided to leave the band to pursue a solo career. Clark moved to America in 2000 and became environmentally active winning awards such as the prestigious Green Tec award. In 2009 Clark reunited with original Johnny Hates Jazz band member Mike Nocito and in 2013 they released the album Magnetized reviving the old sound with a modern flavour. The promotion for this album was sadly cut short due to Clark suffering a cancer diagnosis to which he made a full recovery. The band took some time out and released a new single, titled "Spirit Of Love" in May 2020 and a follow-up album called 'Wide Awake'. The album featured the inspirations and influences of Mike and Clark growing up in the 1970s and Clark's newly found appreciation of the world after his health scare.Clarks latest album Journey Songs 2 will be available soon to pre-order from his official website.Website:https://www.clarkdatchler.com/Journey Songs - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@ClarkDatchlerOfficialJHJ Website:http://johnnyhatesjazz.com/E-Mail: Kensongsmith@gmail.com or Evasongsmith@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. The song "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz was one of the biggest hits of the 80s and is still heard around the world. Larry and Mike talk with Clark Datchler, lead singer and songwriter for Johnny Hates Jazz, who has recorded "Shattered Dreams For Ukraine," an updated version of the hit song, and is using it to raise money and awareness for Polandwelcomes.org, a charity that helps Ukrainian refugees. Not only does Clark play a verse live for us from his home, but he explains the origin of the band's name, how he dealt with fame at such a young age (23!) and how he remains passionate about music and helping change the world.

Johnny Hates Jazz with Clark Datchler in conversation with David Eastaugh In April 1986, Datchler, Nocito and Hayes released the first Johnny Hates Jazz single, "Me and My Foolish Heart", on RAK Records.[9] It was not a commercial success, but gained substantial airplay and was Sounds magazine's record of the week.[citation needed] Datchler began writing new songs which included "Shattered Dreams". JHJ then performed a showcase at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, and were subsequently signed to Virgin Records. "Shattered Dreams" was released in March 1987 and became a top 5 hit in the UK, throughout mainland Europe and Asia, and reached No. 2 in Japan. It was followed by three other worldwide hits, "I Don't Want to Be a Hero", "Turn Back the Clock" (featuring Kim Wilde on backing vocals) and "Heart of Gold". In 1988, "Shattered Dreams" reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart, and climbed to No. 4 in Canada. That same year, their album Turn Back the Clock entered the UK Albums Chart at No. 1, selling four million copies.

Johnny Hates Jazz experienced huge success in the 80s with massive hits like Shattered Dreams and Turn Back the Clock. After 20 years without speaking to one another, members Clark Datchler and Mike Nocito reunited in 2009, and in 2020 have returned stronger than ever with brand new album, Wide Awake. Clark reflects on what makes a ‘great song’, and why music has to not only be relevant to its time, but the future as well.
On this episode we welcome a guest songwriter who wrote and sang a massive worldwide HIT that lit up the eighties pop charts and is still being played to this day. Our first interview episode of Season 4 is a great one! Clark Datchler comes in hot with his opinions on subgenres, the streaming era, and modern pop music, and picks out a few artists he believes are doing pop well in 2019. Special guest Phil Thornalley who recorded the recently released Todd-centric album Astral Drive! Phil Thornalley has spent much of his career behind the scenes, writing songs and producing albums for other artists. His biggest commercial triumph, co-writing and producing the single "Torn" for Natalie Imbruglia, wasn't even sung by him. However, Thornalley does have experience underneath the spotlight. In 1983, Thornalley became the bass player for gothic rock pioneers the Cure after Simon Gallup left. Thornalley had previously co-produced the Cure's 1982 LP ography. Thornalley toured with the Cure while the band promoted The Top album, but his stay was short-lived, lasting only until the group's performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York on November 17, 1984. Gallup had returned to the Cure, causing Thornalley to leave. In 1987, Thornalley worked as an engineer for Johnny Hates Jazz's debut LP Turn Back the Clock; he also wrote the track "Listen." When vocalist Clark Datchler departed from Johnny Hates Jazz in 1988, Thornalley became the band's new lead singer. Thornalley also recorded a solo effort that year, Swamp. In 1991, Johnny Hates Jazz released Tall Stories with Thornalley on vocals. Despite having no dramatic shifts in style from Turn Back the Clock, the LP failed to sell. In 1995, Thornalley co-wrote the track "Torn" on Ednaswap's self-titled debut. Three years later, Thornalley produced Imbruglia's cover of "Torn," a worldwide smash.
I catch up with Clark Datchler, the lead singer of Johnny Hates Jazz, who tells me how the band came up with their name, why he left the band at its height of their success and what he did during his time away from the band. Clark rejoined the band, released a new album a few years ago and is touring.
Johnny Hates Jazz was about to get big. Real big. In 1987 their seminal hit "Shattered Dreams" just hit #2 in the US (other singles did well in the UK and other parts of the world), they had a memorable band name, sleek videos, and the future looked bright. But, suddenly front man Clark Datchler decided he needed to leave the band and venture out on his own. In this engrossing conversation, Clark details what lead him to make that decision and how it impacted his bandmates. Basically, along with global success came an awakening to the sad, dark side of life on this planet as a member of the human race. It stirred within him a desire to fix what he could and inspire others to do the same. It's motivated him personally and creatively ever since and is at the core of who he is. So, get ready to go deep with a fascinating gentleman! http://johnnyhatesjazz.com/
