Having a strong brace is important for lifting heavy weights. It is a critical part of CrossFit, powerlifting and weightlifting. Not to mention just life. We use bracing when we move couches, pick up our kiddos etc.   Weightlifting belts are a performance aid that really helps us to create stiffness through our midline to lift more as well.  We did an entire video on it on our YouTube channel.   Knowing HOW to brace and use a weightlifting belt though is super important for our pelvic floors AND our performance. 50% of women pee when they lift heavy weights. That is a massive number! But there is things we can do about it. We break it all down in this week's podcast episode If youre interested in learning specifica considerations for returning to bracing postpartum, check out our Barbells after Babies Webinar free. ___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. Wir alle wollen auch mal hohe Töne schmettern und belten. Wir wollen also kraftvoll singen. Close your eyes and slow your breath, Feel peace settle in your chest.   PAUSE… Imagine yourself walking, The location matters little. Whether city streets or country lanes, Sunshine keeps its vigil.   PAUSE… The light is always there for you, Even on cloudy days. You might even find it in the rain, Smiling down with rainbow rays.   PAUSE… So choose a direction in your mind, A path you'd like to follow. Set off in search of sunshine, Seek out its healing glow.   PAUSE… Picture a sunny highway, Surrounded by farmers' fields. A winding road for you to explore, To see what discoveries it yields.   PAUSE… See yourself in a convertible, A beautiful, elegant car. Drive like you and the road are one, Breeze past countryside near and far. PAUSE… The drive itself is the purpose. There is no destination. Grip the wheel and enjoy the view, As you accept nature's invitation.   LONG PAUSE… As you drive, you long for music, So you turn on the radio. You sing along to your favorite songs, Belting them out louder as you go.   PAUSE… It's like a celebration, A mobile party just for you. You sway your body as you steer, Your heart soaring as you do.   PAUSE… The warmth of the sun on your shoulders, Only adds to your growing pleasure. It's as if the light is blessing your trip, Adding joy too great to measure. PAUSE… The farther you go, the warmer you feel, The gentle heat sinks right into your soul. Craving more, you hit the gas, Eager to explore the open road.   PAUSE… Perhaps you see animals grazing, Cows and sheep and goats. They're soaking up sun like you are, Content to feed on gentle slopes.   PAUSE… Beyond the animals are houses, Tall, welcoming structures in the distance. The sun shines down on their sturdy roofs, Giving its approval to their existence.   PAUSE… Children play in every yard, Their cheerful laughter fills the air. You find yourself grinning along with them, Remembering the joy of life without cares. PAUSE… For a moment, you feel like a kid again, Like every worry has been erased. You're filled with the hope that sunshine brings, With every bit of darkness replaced.   LONG PAUSE… As you stay the course and keep driving, The landscape changes a bit. The meadows and fields become rolling hills, Small peaks on which the sun can sit.   PAUSE… You have to pull out your sunglasses, As the picture before you starts to glow. You focus on the highway ahead, Eager to see how far you can go.   PAUSE… You start to wonder what waits ahead, If there's even more light to be found. With the sun as your guide and hope in your heart, The possibilities are profound. PAUSE… The music grows mellow and soothing, Like the sunshine wants you to linger. You slow your pace and take in the vista, Whispering thanks for our brilliant light-bringer. PAUSE… We're here to make a difference. We're here to treasure our gifts. We're here to help and learn and grow, To repair our meaningless rifts.   PAUSE… It's hard to feel hopeless in the sunshine. Apprehensions tend to shrivel in the light. Shade can be a relief, but not an escape, And truth is clearer when the view is bright. PAUSE… So drive as long as you need to, Find the vision that lights up your spirit. Point your car toward the sunshine, And keep going until you can feel it.   PAUSE…

In the latest episode of "Monique on the Mic," I have the pleasure of welcoming Greg Enriquez, my mentor and friend since 2009, who brings the charm and expertise of James Bond into the world of vocal artistry. In this engaging conversation, Greg discusses his unique approach to vocal training, explaining why he prefers the title 'vocal consultant' over 'voice teacher' or 'vocal coach'. His perspective sheds light on the depth and breadth of his work, which goes beyond mere technique to encompass the holistic development of a singer. We dive straight into the discussion of belting and discuss the challenges singers are currently facing due to the limited performance opportunities in the post-COVID era. Greg emphasizes the importance of live performances for singers, not only for their growth but also for the inspiration they garner from experiencing the authenticity and depth of live vocals. We also touch upon the often misunderstood nature of highly creative individuals, highlighting the need for artists to embrace their true selves and the importance of self-awareness in their artistic journey.Greg's insights on the plateau effect in learning are particularly enlightening. This episode is not only a testament to Greg's profound understanding of the vocal arts but also a beacon of wisdom for singers at all stages of their journey. EP.133 STT – Mastering Belt in Musical Theatre with Amanda Flynn

BAST Training podcast

To continue our discussion on the juicy topic of "belt," Alexa is joined by voice teacher and trainer of musical theatre and CCM, Amanda Flynn. Amanda has performed in shows like "Wicked" and "Mamma Mia" and has held the position of Production Vocal Coach for "The Lightning Thief" and "Be More Chill" on Broadway. She is the author of "So You Want to Sing Musical Theatre," the updated and expanded edition, and is here to chat about mastering belt in musical theatre. KEY TAKEAWAYS When discussing belting, it's essential to remember that it doesn't originate from Western classical singing. It's a form of sound production found worldwide, particularly in indigenous music traditions. Belting gained popularity in popular music through black female blues artists who incorporated this technique to intensify the emotional impact of their voices. When we apply Western classical principles to belting, many aspects don't align, leading to confusion among singers who realise that what they've been trained on doesn't quite fit this distinct vocal style. Mastering belt with laryngeal and acoustic registration involves controlling vocal folds, optimising resonance, and blending chest and head voice for a powerful and emotionally charged performance. Remember, if it sounds like a belt and works for a song then it's good. If you're getting the sound you want, don't overthink it. BEST MOMENTS ‘Belt is the most common and popular musical expression we have' ‘Belting is complex, it's not simple and straightforward' ‘They said you were belting out a sound because it's this big pop of a sound, almost like a punch' ‘One of the top questions I'm asked is what is belting, but we never ask a classical singer what classical is' EPISODE RESOURCES amandaflynnvoice.com Instagram & Tik Tok: @amandaflynnie Sign up for one of Amanda's classes, here: https://amanda-s-school-a64e.thinkific.com/ Get your copy of Amanda's book on Amazon Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists mentioned: Ma Rainey; Ida Cox; Bessie Smith; Ethel Merman; Musical Theatre shows mentioned: Wicked; Oklahoma! We break it all down in this week's podcast episodeIf youre interested in learning specifica considerations for returning to bracing postpartum, check out our Barbells after Babies Webinar free. ___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. For Jordan Donica, it started as it did for many actors, going to shows as a kid and then hitting the stage in high school. But once he got to New York at the end of college, his ascent in the theater world was rapid. Quite rapid. The talent was always there.Same for the love of performing. And athletics.  Many of us had a tough time bridging those two passions in high school. ButJordan made it work, even cajoling his fellow football players into trying out for the school show.He eventually chose the stage. His many admirers are glad he did.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Perhaps one of the greatest myths singers grow up hearing is "belting is bad for you!" If that were true, how could so many incredible musical theatre singers make decades long careers out of belting on stage, eight times a week? Granted, belting is a highly demanding style of singing, and there are certainly things to avoid if you want to do it well and have a lasting singing career. Today we're talking all about healthy belting. Is it possible? And what should you to avoid in order to achieve it? Get top musical theatre training in an online course. Sound the alarm and belt to the high heavens because, God?! Today on the podcast is Bonnie Milligan! The star of the incredible hit Broadway musical Kimberly Akimbo joins Matt & Bowen after some quick updates (we did not yet watch #ReFroWeHo, Matt went to Sundance and Disney World, Bowen battled through a cold to play George Santos) to talk working with legends like Victoria Clark, Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay Abaire on this new show, vocal health and making good choices while singing *and* speaking, the value of both being and being *around* a loud laugher, the great diva voices of the 90's, The Rocky Horror Picture Show as an influence on little performances at recess, and the journey that Bonnie (who currently holds the distinction of singing the highest belted note on Broadway) took to finally realize herself as a BELTRESS. Also, the girls witchily predict Andrea Riseborough's Best Actress Oscar nomination for To Leslie and love even more on two It Girls of the moment: M3GAN and Stephanie Hsu (CONGRATULATIONS, FLARGE!) They also get into "snub" culture, "sirens in pop songs" culture, and ask the question on everyone's lips: when the hell can we watch A Diva's Christmas Carol starring Vanessa Williams as Ebony Scrooge?! Listening to this ep? Will make your life... better! #IYKYK See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
