Kim Wilde | Select (LP) |
A (relatively) in-depth analysis of unique English singer-songwriter Julia Fordham in (just over) fifteen minutes.Fordham's professional career started in the early 1980s, when she was known as Jules Fordham, singing backing vocals for Mari Wilson and Kim Wilde. In 1988, she released her first album on Circa Records. Her second album, Porcelain, followed in 1989. It was Fordham's only album to chart on the US top 100. In 2014, Fordham, now based in California, returned to the UK to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Porcelain. She performed the album in its entirety, accompanied by her long-time pianist and producer Grant Mitchell. The tour concluded at the Tivoli Theatre in my home town, Wimborne. From 2018-19, Fordham toured with Beverley Craven and Judie Tzuke (Tzuke is also featured in this podcast series). The three artists also released an album 'Woman to Woman' to coincide with the tour. In 2019 Fordham released the album Magic, written for and dedicated to her daughter Marley. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Kim Wilde burst on to the music scene in 1981 with 'Kids In America' and has since been a mainstay of pop. Kim loves music and gardening and performing and she sits down with Gaby for a cuppa to talk about all these things and more. She's also a big fan of sea swimming (Producer Joe approves) and paddle boarding - and tells Gaby how she's finding more and more hobbies and passions later in life. Dylan Jones once described the Eighties as being shaped by ‘a new type of bohemianism, one empowered by a certainty and an optimism that was only fleeting back in the sixties.' *Moreso, K.Tel records importantly reminded us that home taping was killing music. So, it's November 1981, and this young music fan is feverishly taking ownership of two cassettes in his local Woolworths. One blue, one red. One bought, one free. Together this maiden compilation purchase - from the aforementioned compilation giant K.Tel, Charthits ‘81 - as kicked off by the ever so eighties drum crash from Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin – was the start of a lifelong love for variously compiled pop. One that would lead to, well, NOW. Forty years later and the superlative team at NOW HQ delivered their Yearbook for 1981. 85 of the biggest, brightest and best hits (thank you Mr. Mulligan for that very nice tagline). A year that started tragically with the death of John Lennon, and ended with Susanne and Joanne from the Human League with spray foam in their mouths amidst highly flammable Christmas trees in BBC Television Centre. And inbetween, a dazzling twelve months where the decade began to take shape and form an identity that remains with us today. Pop, soul, disco, funk, rock, reggae and metal. All present and correct. But, as Thursday nights on BBC1 would testify through those iconic theme tunes of Tomorrow's World and the newly christened TOTP Yellow Pearl in July, electronica was elbowing its way through the queue at the Blitz club to make a defining mark on the sights and sounds of 1981.With the able assistance of guests Chi and Ian from ElectricityClub.co.uk, this episode revisits the NOW Yearbook 1981 (and it's stellar accompanying extra volume!). An iconic line up of music and memories awaits including Duran, Duran, Ultravox, Soft Cell, Kim Wilde, The Human League and ABBA. We explore how the year saw some seventies survivors glam up and mobilise for this new decade with assistance from the new video pioneers such as Russell Mulcahy and David Mallet. We also consider how retro never sounded so good, what made a good (and bad) medley hit, how tribal factions and cultural identity shaped our school days (and the streets across the UK), how news and popular culture were living under the ever present threat of global destruction and how pop saved us all once again.Grab some blank tapes, switch off one of the three channels on your TV and join us as we head back to a glorious year in pop, 1981.Ridicule is, as you know, nothing to be scared of. * Sweet Dreams: The Story of the New Romantics: Dylan Jones (2020) Hosted on Acast. Born in Islington where he was brought up. He went to school with members of band Spandau Ballet and was very friendly with Tony Hadley.Aged 15 he decided to join the cadets but after a lot of medicals the Met Police decided that his eyesight was not up to standard and was unable to join. At 18 the Metropolitan Police wrote to Mark and offered him a job.He accepted the role, and he joined on a Monday and by the Wednesday he left Hendon! He went on to become a telecom engineer he then opened a dance wear shop which subsequently closed.During a shopping trip to Letchworth he saw the recruitment team for Hertfordshire and decided to apply and was accepted. He was sent to Bruche for training which he found particularly difficult. His initial posting was Hatfield, and this is described as not being very nice and is the subject of the books written by Charlie Owen. Mark took on the beat at Codicote where he got to meet Kim Wilde. Upon the closure of the rural beats Mark was posted to Hitchin.Having been posted to Boreham wood Mark decided to apply for the Metropolitan Police and was accepted. He was posted to Islington and his dreams were shattered. It wasn't the force that he had hoped it would be.He returned to Hertfordshire for until 2005 when he applied for and was accepted to British Transport Police and was posted to Kings Cross. During his time he experienced the delights of traveling football fans and people who had jumped in front of a speeding train.Following the Borough Market/London Bridge attack Mark became the spoc for PC Wayne Marques and was disappointed at the reaction of the senior BTP management. On this 200th episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast, and as we celebrate its third year, Andy Lopata welcomes celebrated guest Janey Lee Grace. Janey is an Amazon No. 1 best-selling author and speaker, and she was co-presenter on the UK's biggest radio show, BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon, for 24 years. Formerly, she was a backing singer with Wham!, Kim Wilde and Boy George, and had their own number 8 chart hit as Cola Boy with 7 Ways to Love. Janey has written five books on holistic living, including the number one Amazon best seller ‘Imperfectly Natural Woman', and her latest book ‘Happy Healthy Sober': Ditch the booze and take control of your life, which encourages everyone to look again at their relationship with alcohol. Janey has now dedicated her life to addressing "the alcoholic elephant in the room," advocating for an alcohol-free lifestyle. She recognises alcohol as a common factor in many social connections and explores the challenges of building relationships without the 'glue' of drinks. A major prompt for her came when she realised how her lifestyle of drinking roughly a bottle of wine a night sat quite at odds with her long-established career as a healthier-living advocate. Janey, who now hosts the popular Alcohol Free Life podcast, was struck by how readily accepted and indeed normalised the central place of alcohol had become within society. Her mission now is to highlight that every industry, not just entertainment, has a significant problem with heavy drinking. It's this prevalence and normalisation of alcohol in our society that Janey seeks to challenge by advocating for equal acceptance of the choice to not consume alcohol. Many professionals find alcohol to be a uniting component in establishing connections. Andy and Janey discuss how people can build relationships without depending on the 'glue' represented by alcohol. Siding with inclusivity and equal opportunities for all, Andy extends this conversation to those incompatible with traditional alcohol-based socialising. Janey emphasises that organisations have a pressing responsibility to eradicate the assumption that everyone drinks and combat the societal pressure to drink. She also proposes an alternative: Keep the ritual, change the ingredients,' keeping the culture intact while replacing unhealthy habits with healthier ones. The episode addresses the role of connection and community in aiding those trying to limit or stop their alcohol consumption. Janey underscores the immeasurable support she received from others in the same situation or those who've successfully pulled themselves out of it. This podcast sheds light on the shift organisations need to start making towards healthier, more inclusive, and more sustainable ways of connecting and conducting business. Whether you're engaged in social drinking or what Janey calls "grey area drinking," this episode is a valuable listen. It's an exploration of our relationship with alcohol and how it interacts with our efforts to connect and build relationships. Connect with Andy Lopata Website Connect with Janey Lee Grace Website

Janey is passionate about encouraging people to ditch the chemicals, focus on great nutrition, selfcare, and finding their purpose as she found for herself that quitting the booze was the missing link in the ‘holistic living' picture. Today's entertaining episode of Electronically Yours features on of Martyn's best friends in the music business, Ricky Wilde. As brother of Kim Wilde, and son of 60's pop star Marty Wilde, he is the songwriter, musician, and record producer responsible for almost all of Kim's massive worldwide hits, including Kids In America. He was originally spotted by Jonathan King and Micky Most, and was briefly touted as a teen idol – the new Donny Osmond if you like – when he was 12, but later he realised he preferred his role as songwriter/producer for Kim, amongst others. They continue to write and tour together to this day… Ladies and gentlemen – the supremely talented Ricky Wilde... Forty years ago Clare Grogan was on the cover of Smash Hits yet again and was the fourth guest at our garden party on June 3. Here she remembers the key events that have happened since which include meeting Bill Forsyth and the success of Gregory's Girl (and why she only saw it for the first time recently), touring with Siouxsie & the Banshees when still at school, life as a pop star in the golden age, being Kristine Kochanski in Red Dwarf and its obsessive fans, her time in Father Ted, Kim Wilde's call to get her to join the Here And Now ‘80s pop package tour and a great story about Nik Kershaw and John Taylor. Listen to what happened when she told the audience how she loves and needs applause – and loves “loud cheering” even more. Spoiler alert: contains both laughter and tears.
