What up Fellas! Bissu dumm?

By the mid-70's the Beach Boys appeared to be a band that had been left behind. Sales had been only moderate for their previous albums, and the band was struggling to determine their direction musically. In the summer of 1973 the movie "American Graffiti" featured several Beach Boys songs, creating nostalgia for the earlier surfing music.Between the revived interest sparked by "American Graffiti" and the success of the Beatles "Red" and "Blue" compilation albums, the Beach Boys released a collection of hits from their early 60's catalogue called Endless Summer. This featured songs from their Capitol Records days, 1962-1965. It was a near-instant success reaching the top of the charts in the United States four months after its release, and becoming their second number 1 album on the US charts. After the success of Endless Summer, the Beach Boys would reposition themselves as an oldies act, continuing in this vein for many years. Brian Wilson would pen one further Beach Boys studio album in 1977 which would meet with meager sales. Afterwards the band would focus on their classics until seeing a resurgence in the late 80's generated from another popular film, Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" Wayne brings us this surfin' themed compilation for this week's podcast. Catch A WaveA true surfing song, this tune is about being on a surfboard, waiting for the right wave to come along. This song was originally released on the 1963 album "Surfer Girl," and a rewritten version was recorded by Jan and Dean as "Sidewalk Surfin."Little Deuce CoupeThis track is about a 1932-vintage Ford model 18 hot rod used in drag racing on the streets of California. "American Graffiti" had featured the deuce coupe prominently, along with the Beach Boys song. The lyrics were written by local radio DJ Roger Christian.Shut DownAnother song about drag racing, "shut down" means you are about to beat the person in the race. The phrase "tach it up" may have lost some meaning in the era of automatic transmission, but the tachometer would run high for a drag race. The song is told from the perspective of the driver of a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray in a race against a 1962 Dodge Dart.Fun, Fun, FunThe inspiration for this song was a story the Beach Boys heard during a radio interview. The station owner described his daughter "borrowing" his 1963 Thunderbird to go to a drive-in hamburger shop. The opening riffs were inspired by Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Uptown Saturday Night by Dobie Gray (from the motion picture “Uptown Saturday Night”)Sidney Poitier starred in and directed this action comedy which co-starred Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Richard Pryor, and Flip Wilson. STAFF PICKS:The Joker by the Steve Miller BandLynch leads off the staff picks with a well known song from Steve Miller. The names in the first line reference several of Miller's previous songs, as well as the made-up word "pompatus." It barely cracked the top 40 in the US, hitting 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. Miller borrowed some lyrics from the song "Lovey Dovey" when he talks about wanting to "shake your tree."The Air that I Breathe by the HolliesRob brings us a slow burning but iconic ballad that the Hollies covered. The original was from Albert Hammond, and previously covered by Phil Everly. The Hollies version was the most successful, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Alan Parsons was the engineer on this song.Hollywood Swinging by Kool & the GangBruce's staff pick is the first number 1 R&B Single from Kool & the Gang. It was a crossover hit as well, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rick Westfield is the keyboardist for it and sings lead. The song is a true story of the keyboardist wanting to become "a bad piano-playing man" with the group. Rock and Roll Heaven by The Righteous BrothersWayne's features an ode to the rock stars who had died at an early age. This song is another example of a song that was covered, and did better than the original. Climax performed this song in 1973 but did not chart, while the Righteous Brothers took it to the top 10 in the United States. Lyric would be added in the years to come as more rock stars passed. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Chameleon by Herbie HancockThis jazz funk instrumental track closes out the podcast for the week. In this episode, (the 89th!) I share some great news and also invite you to get to know artist, rapper, DJ and expert manifestor, Prince Hakim. It's an encore presentation of my interview with Hakim, who is an internationally known performer and whose family is no stranger to musical success (he's the son of Robert “Kool” Bell of Kool & The Gang). Hakim and I chatted about just about everything during this episode - from his friendship with music mogul Jermaine Dupri, to touring with the legendary Kool & The Gang, and opening for Van Halen and other music greats. And of course, we dove deeper into Hakim's thoughts on spirituality, meditation, and the power of manifesting with regard to his life and career. Hakim also spoke about the “Kool Kids Foundation,” which was founded by his father, Robert “Kool” Bell and his late mother, Sakinah Bell. The Foundation supports arts and music programs in schools. Since this episode originally aired, Hakim's career has only continued to skyrocket, and Kool & the Gang have gone on be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - an honor that is both well-deserved and long overdue. As a bonus, at the end of the interview, you can listen to Hakim's song, “So Impressive,” featuring Walt Anderson. (You'll be walking around singing for the rest of the day!) Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTH#Sponsored by BetterHelpBetterHelp.com/Hallmark - for 10% off your first month #adVisitGreenvilleSC.com/Things-To-Do/Winter/ The movie kicks off with a fun little animation telling the story of a secret that started in 1996 when Avery met Logan. They became quick friends. Avery could 100% be herself around him, and vice versa. As they got older, that friendship blossomed into true love—the kind that can get you through anything, like the loss of Avery's mom.Fast forward: they're adults now. Avery lands a job in London, and Logan is less than thrilled. It's 2014, and on their last night together, Logan is driving the struggle bus. They're in the middle of a fight, but it boils down to him saying, “I'm just really going to miss you, and I'm sad.”At her going-away party, her dad gives an emotional speech before handing the mic to Logan. Logan gets down on one knee, but before he can even pop the question, Avery blurts out, “No.” Logan does not handle it well and throws out, “If your mom were alive, she'd be disappointed.” Ouch. Avery breaks up with him and leaves.Cue a fun montage of the world's biggest moments from 2014-2024 (shoutout to Stranger Things and Squid Game—Netflix wins again). Now it's 2024. Avery is a hotshot dealmaker with a hotshot dealmaker boyfriend named Cam. Logan, meanwhile, is a contractor dating Cassie, who comes from a family where every sibling's name starts with “C.” (More on that soon.)Avery and Cam head to her dad's house, which is all packed up. Her dad, now remarried, is selling the family home. She says goodbye as her dad and stepmom leave for a holiday trip. Then it's off to Cam's very uptight family. At their gathering, guess who walks in? Logan and Cassie. Turns out Cam is Cassie's brother (one of the “C” names).Logan and Avery are stunned but quickly decide to pretend they've never met. Avery, already intimidated by Cam's mom (played by Kristin Chenoweth, no less), doesn't need the added drama. But the awkwardness only grows. Cam has his own “former friend” story: a girl named Sophie who studied abroad and is now back. Cam's mom loves Sophie.Meanwhile, Logan and Avery strike a deal: Avery will help Logan land a business deal with Tim Meadows, and Logan will make Kristin Chenoweth like Avery. This is where things go off the rails. Avery borrows a jacket, eats some gummies from the pocket, and discovers (too late) that they're weed gummies. At church. She ends up rambling about her hands and turns a Christmas reading into a Kool & the Gang singalong. Kristin Chenoweth is not impressed, but hey, the pastor loved it.Later, the munchies hit. Avery eats a batch of cookies meant for a cookie exchange. To cover it up, she blames the dog, which backfires when the dog has to be rushed to the vet. Shenanigans ensue, but they manage to keep Kristin in the dark. The chaos ramps up when Cam's younger brother, Callum, overhears Logan and Avery talking about their past relationship. He blackmails them into helping him get a booth at a Christmas market. Then there's a bar scene. Guess who shows up? Sophie. Avery sees her getting flirty with Cam, and when she gets a call about her dad's real estate agent needing access to the house, she leaves. Logan offers her a ride, and they have a heart-to-heart about her memories of the house. He encourages her to buy it, and they spend some quiet time there.Later, Logan catches Cam sneaking into the house late at night. Cam begs Logan not to tell Avery. Finally, everything blows up at the Christmas Eve gathering. Cassie surprises Logan by inviting his parents, and Grandma spills the beans about Logan and Avery's past. Callum exposes Avery's cookie crime. Just as she's about to leave, Avery asks Cam if anything happened with Sophie. He admits it did. It's over.Avery leaves, and Logan asks if he can call her. She says no.But when she finds out that Logan suggested to her dad that she should buy the house, she realizes he might be something special. She ensures his business plan gets to the right people. In the end, Avery's dad surprises her with the keys to her childhood home. At her housewarming party, Logan asks for a second chance. They confess their love and kiss. A year later, they're planning their wedding. Through animation, we learn they get married sometime after that.
