Recorded on 7 November 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr David Randall chairs a webinar with Lindsay Brown Why is student ministry so important/strategic in fulfilling God's purposes? How have medics played a significant role in student ministry globally? What can we learn from Scripture and past church history about how to engage with students? What should be our goals/key emphases in helping to present Christian students mature in Christ? We will try to provide helpful answers to these (and other) questions in our time together. Lindsay Brown is a native of Wales. He studied European history at Oxford (MA) and theology at the Free Faculty of Theology at Vaux-sur-Seine, near Paris, under Henri Blocher. Lindsay has worked with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES) for the past 45 years in a variety of roles, including serving as International Director. More recently, he has been leading the Fellowship of Evangelists in the Universities of Europe (FEUER). FEUER's main goal is the development of a Europe-wide network of public university evangelists who work in partnership with indigenous student ministries throughout every country in Europe. He is the author of Shining Like Stars – The Power of the Gospel in the World's Universities (IVP) and Into All the world – The Missionary Vision of Calvin and Luther (Christian Focus), which was written after a presentation at the European Leadership Forum several years ago. Recorded on 26 September 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr David Randall chairs a webinar with Dr Trevor Stammers Death is both a biological necessity and a spiritual norm. "It is destined for people to die once" (Hebrews 9v7 DLNT). Determining death was once relatively easy - the cessation of breathing and heartbeat for over ten minutes were usually considered reliable indicators. But with the invention of the 'iron lung' in 1927 and the development of CPR in the 1960s, the determination of death has become more complex and controversial, particularly in the light of the way that the concept of brain death evolved in parallel with advances in organ transplantation. More recently, increasing use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has raised further dilemmas over the determination of circulatory death. This seminar will explore the issues involved and Christian approaches to them. Trevor Stammers was Associate Professor of Medical Ethics at St Mary's University, Twickenham until retirement in 2021. He is the author of The Ethics of Global Organ Acquisition: Moral arguments about transplantation, published by Bloomsbury in 2023. Recorded on 5 September 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr David Randall chairs a webinar with Dr Ewan Goligher Physician-assisted death is increasingly advocated as a patient-centered and compassionate response to the deep suffering faced by our patients. Christianity has traditionally opposed this practice as immoral and alien to medicine, but many question this opposition or struggle to defend it or are uncertain whether individual conscientious objection should be respected. Talking about ethics and morality in medicine is challenging, especially in Western culture characterized by moral pluralism and a commitment to secularism in public moral deliberation. To what moral authority can we appeal to resolve what is right and wrong? In this lecture, a Canadian physician who has wrestled with all these questions presents the story of his own involvement in the debate over physician-assisted death in Canada and offers an approach to explaining and defending opposition to this practice, appealing both to general revelation and to the truth about the nature and value of the human person revealed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Ewan Goligher (MD, PhD, FRCPC) is Associate Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on life-saving interventions for patients with acute lung failure. He has published over 150 papers and several book chapters. His work has been published in leading medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, and subspecialty journals. He is also the author of "How Shall We Then Die? A Christian Response to Physician-Assisted Death", published by Lexham Press. As a specialist in critical care medicine, he cares for patients admitted to the intensive care unit with acute life-threatening illness, and he is regularly involved in helping patients and families navigate difficult decisions about medical care at the end of life. Tom Robertson, Executive Director of the Vizient Research Institute, and David Randall, Chief Strategy Officer, UAB Medicine, discuss the vulnerability of the traditional health system business model, driven by a payment system that creates unintended consequences. The conversation then turns to how things could change, and David describes a unique experiment underway involving a completely different funding method for indigent care. Guest speaker: David Randall, MBA Chief Strategy Officer, UAB Medicine CEO Cooper Green Mercy Health Services Authority Moderator: Tom Robertson Executive Director Vizient Research Institute Show Notes: [01:00] Provider operating margins affected by increasing Medicare population [03:45] Diversifying revenue [04:50] Global spending budget allows provider organizations to be more innovative and think about capacity differently [07:18] Current payor system based on sickness and volume does not incentivize preventive wellness care [09:36] If price wasn't an issue, it may help payors and providers to focus more on care processes [10:47] Example of shifting from unit price to episodic cost – cancer care [11:36] Would be good to have a national discussion between the payers and providers focused on optimizing episodes of care [12:48] UAB's fund-flow model is relatively payer agnostic. [14:55] Have to figure out how to get paid for services outside the four walls of the hospital, such as community outreach programs for mental health [16:47] Even if we are paid more money, there's still a capacity issue [18:44] Global payments example: Jefferson County Indigent Clinic Links | Resources: David Randall's biographical information Subscribe Today! America's educational institutions, from secondary to post-secondary, continue to perform abysmally in teaching history and civics. In many ways, the lack of knowledge about how the republic works explains why America sits on a stack of massive problems. America's government is powered by its citizens, but ignorance - from voters to legislators - seems to be running rampant. David Randall, Director of Research at the National Association of Scholars, joins the podcast to discuss his latest study: "Learning for Self-Government: A K-12 Civics Report Card." Randall has analyzed many of today's famous and infamous history and civics lesson plans provided by schools and/or organizations. As the school year closes and a new one approaches, this is a perfect time to have this conversation.

"I think a lot of people don't understand how fearful Chinese Americans and other Asian Americans are in this moment" -Toby ChowOn March 16, a gunman in Atlanta killed eight people. Six of them were women of Asian descent. During the last 12 months, anti-Asian hate crimes were up 150% in the United States but the coronavirus pandemic is not the first time people of Asian descent have been stigmatized because of a disease. In this episode, we’ll look back at what happened in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush when an outbreak of the plague was blamed on Chinese immigrants. We'll look back to see what happened in San Francisco, and how overcoming bigotry then prevented a plague pandemic in America. If you're looking to support the Asian American and Pacific Islander community at this time, two organizations we recommend are the Asian American Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Fund and Asian American Advancing Justice Atlanta. David K. Randall presents the paperback edition of his eerily relevant book on a past pandemic, Black Death at the Golden Gate: The Race to Save America from the Bubonic Plague. Along with journalist and infectious diseases specialist Dr. Celine Gounder – who has been working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic in NYC – Randall discusses the spread of the bubonic plague in San Francisco in the year 1900, and the anti-Chinese racism, anti-science sentiment, and politicization of public health that followed. Recorded July 9, 2020.
Audrey Marie Frazier defies true crime labels. Was she a black widow? Was she a master of disguise? An escape artist? We like to think she was all three! See, ladies? We really can have it all. Audrey was a chronic spender. She never had enough money to support her expensive tastes. So she got creative. She bought life insurance policies, and umm…. All of a sudden, the people around her got sick. Super sick. Then Kristin tells us about John Darwin. This man is a douche canoe if we’ve ever heard of one. On March 21, 2002, John hopped in his handmade canoe and set out into the North Sea. The waters were calm and he was an experienced canoeist, but John didn’t show up for work that evening. His wife, Anne, panicked. She called the authorities. Rescue crews worked tirelessly to find John, but all they found was his paddle and the wreckage of his canoe. Don’t worry about John, though. He was just fine. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. David Randall, author of "Black Death at the Golden Gate," tells a story that reminds us that history may not repeat itself, but it often rhymes. He details how the bubonic plague overran San Francisco and the West Coast in 1900, fueling denial of emerging science, quarantines, anti-Chinese racism, and fears of a second wave.
