A sheriff's deputy arrived at Nathan and Danielle Clark's front door on the outskirts of Springfield, Ohio, in September with the latest memento of what their son's death had become. “I'm sorry that I have to show you this,” she said and handed them a flier with a picture of Aiden, 11, smiling at the camera after his last baseball game. It was the same image the Clarks had chosen for his funeral program and then made into Christmas ornaments for his classmates, but this time the photograph was printed alongside threats and racial slurs.“Killed by a Haitian invader,” the flier read. “They didn't care about Aiden. They don't care about you. They are pieces of human trash that deserve not your sympathy, but utter scorn. Give it to them … and then some.”“They have no right to speak for him like this,” Danielle said. “It's making me sick. There must be some way to stop it.”This was the version of the country the Clarks and their two teenage children had encountered during the last year, ever since Aiden died in a school bus crash in August 2023 on the way to his first day of sixth grade. The crash was ruled an accident, caused by a legally registered Haitian immigrant who veered into the bus while driving without a valid license. But as the presidential campaign intensified, former President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, began to tell a different story. Erin Clark: Managing Director and US National Leader for Deloitte's Human Capital Consulting's leadership offerings. With over 20 years of experience as an executive coach, Erin specializes in fostering leadership and driving organizational change. Episode Summary: Greg and his guests continue to tackle the profound differences between superficial leadership tactics and truly ethical, value-based leadership. With real-world examples ranging from historical contexts to modern organizational behavior, the discussion sheds light on the internal battle between self-interest and collective well-being. The Clarks share actionable insights on empowering others, recognizing the dangers of conflating control with good outcomes, and creating environments where people can thrive.  Key Takeaways: The Essence of Leading Through: Transitioning from a controlling mindset to one that fosters collective growth and individual empowerment. Importance of Love in Leadership: Making other people your primary focus and building deeper connections through attention, affection, and genuine listening. Competence as Protection: How being exceptionally good at your job can shield you from toxic leadership and help you excel. Handling Power Over Dynamics: Strategies for identifying and addressing controlling behaviors in leadership while maintaining your integrity and effectiveness. Moral and Ethical Leadership: The necessity of aligning leadership decisions with fundamental values that promote long-term organizational success and individual well-being. Notable Quotes: "You can choose to use your agency in ways that continue the control or choose something different." - Greg McKeown "The continuum is desires and appetites and passions that lead you to damage or hurt other people." - Kim Clark "Every person sort of comes into the world the agency, starting at zero." - Greg McKeown "If you're mediocre, there's no recourse. But if you're really good at what you're doing, then the power over is still there, and you're not worried." - Kim Clark "Leadership is moral and it is about making things better for as many people as we can." - Erin Clark Resources: Buy The Clark's Book "Leading Through" Join my weekly newsletter. With over 20 years of experience as an executive coach, Erin specializes in fostering leadership and driving organizational change. Episode Summary: Greg is joined by the dynamic Clark family trio: Kim, Jonathan, and Erin Clark. Together, they explore challenging paradigms within modern organizations, emphasizing the detrimental impacts of the "power over" model and introducing their revolutionary "leading through" approach. This paradigm shift is pivotal in restoring personal agency within organizations, leading to enhanced innovation, productivity, and employee well-being. Throughout the episode, the Clarks present compelling arguments that highlight the necessity of recognizing and cultivating true leadership across the board, extending beyond mere compliance to inspiring genuine engagement and unity. Key Takeaways: Power Over Paradigm: Many modern organizations operate under a control-focused paradigm that limits personal agency and stifles innovation. Leadership at All Levels: True leadership isn't confined to positions of authority; it should be nurtured at every level of an organization, empowering individuals to drive change. Counterfeit Unity: In power-over organizations, unity is often superficial, driven by compliance rather than genuine engagement and alignment with shared goals. Moral Core of Leadership: Leadership is inherently a moral act, emerging in moments of influence where choices can drive positive or negative impacts. Generating Light: Effective leaders foster environments of light, driving out fear and darkness, and enabling individuals to thrive and contribute meaningfully. Notable Quotes: Jonathan Clark: "Leadership is always and everywhere a moral act." Kim Clark: "One of the things that leaders do is they drive out darkness and they generate light." Greg McKeown: "You don't comply your way to the best work of your career." Resources: Buy The Clark's Book "Leading Through" Join my weekly newsletter. Learn more about my books and courses. An Unexpected Job OfferJim and Teresa Clark left Cedarville University in the same way they entered it--together.They retired at the end of the 2023-24 academic year but before leaving they remembered their journey on the Cedarville Stories Podcast. The Clarks were settled in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They had lived there for 21 years, had just bought their dream home, and were confident this was where the Lord wanted them. But, although man may have plans, the Lord orders his steps. During a weekend visit to Cedarville University with their daughter during a Little Sibs Weekend, the Clarks got reacquainted with their alma mater. Teresa had often visited Cedarville with her high school volleyball teams that she coached in Fort Wayne. But this visit took a different turn than the rest. She was approached by Elvin King, the women's cross-country coach, following a match, who asked her to follow him to Athletic Director Don Callan's office. There, Teresa was asked to apply for the head volleyball coach position — which was currently vacant.Even though she and Jim, were not convinced Cedarville University was where the Lord was leading them, she applied. Teresa even came for an on-campus interview, which she felt went poorly. But the Lord opened a door for the Clarks. Jim secured a position in the admissions department while Teresa was leading the Yellow Jackets volleyball team. And, now, 27 years later, the Clarks have left quite the legacy. Teresa's final position of service was as the faculty-athletics representative, and Jim ended his career as the assistant sports information director.https://share.transistor.fm/s/795b92c5

Phillip and Brian discuss the forgettable nature of AI music. Corporations' birthdays are an essential thing that we need to care about now. Also, an update on Lammers Law: everything eventually becomes an ad. PLUS: OSHA for the MIND?? Listen now.The Right to DisconnectKey takeaways:- Amazon is scaling back its Just Walk Out technology from its Amazon Fresh grocery stores. Due to technical limitations in grocery stores, it will be constrained to airports and small-format stores.- JPMorgan's use of customer transaction data for targeted advertising highlights the increasing importance of personalized content.- AI-generated music, such as that produced by Suno AI, may lack memorability but showcases the advancements in AI technology.- The "right to disconnect" bill in California reflects the ongoing need for work-life balance in an increasingly digital world.- Corporate anniversaries are becoming a popular marketing strategy and cultural celebration for brands.{00:11:41} - “People want the friction in their local community of chatting with their checker and chatting with people that are in line and living life in their community because they probably bump into people that they know, and it's part of their daily routine or their weekly routine or whatever to engage with the people in their communities as they go about doing their business.” - Brian{00:19:32} - “We all hate this idea, but the truth is that ads, good ads, and contextual ads add to a discovery mechanism in many platforms. Good ads heighten the experience of Instagram, I would argue. The good ads on Instagram make my experience of Instagram better. I think Instagram is a little bit worse if it has no ads because I discover things.” - Phillip{00:29:35} - “In my mind, this is as good as [AI music] will ever be. It doesn't only get better from here. Maybe the fidelity gets better. Maybe it can create stems. Maybe you can do more editing. Maybe you could go in and tweak things, and you'll have more creator tools, but it doesn't mean it gets more creative over time.” - Phillip{00:41:51} - “There's a really interesting amnesiac effect with this AI-generated music is it's incredibly forgettable. There's nothing remarkable or memorable about any of it. And I almost feel the same way about all AI-generated content. AI-generated art, AI-generated writing. There's nothing memorable or remarkable about it ever. The memorable thing is the discourse around it.” - Phillip{01:04:29} - “We are getting to a point now where we're hitting Norbert Wiener's prediction around "the world of the future will be an even more demanding struggle against the limitations of our intelligence, not a comfortable hammock in which we can lie down to be waited upon by our robot slaves." What we're bumping up right now against is pushing our minds further as far as they possibly can go, and there's a lot of burnout that's happening as a result.” - BrianAssociated Links:Check out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printThe MUSES Journal is here!
