The Soviet Union suppressed Judaism and Jewish identity for decades. Atheism was enforced by the state. But our guest today, Pinchas Shir, knew there was more to life than the material world. In the era of perestroika, he fled to the United States, and today, he's a Messianic Jewish rabbi. Join us as Rabbi Shir unpacks his academic work on Jewish literature, meals and food in antiquity, and the impact of texts like 1 Enoch, Letter of Aristeas, and Wisdom of Solomon on our understanding of the New Testament. Whether you're new to Second Temple studies or a seasoned scholar, this episode will give you a fresh perspective on the historical and spiritual context of early Judaism and Christianity. – Takeaways – The Suppressed Jewish Identity in the Soviet Union: Rabbi Shir shares firsthand accounts of how Jewish identity was hidden and discouraged under Soviet rule. Many Jews in Russia grew up without religious education or knowledge of their heritage due to the state's suppression of religion. A Spiritual Journey of Discovery: Growing up in an atheistic society, Rabbi Shir felt an inner pull towards spirituality. His first encounter with the Bible came from American missionaries, leading him on a long journey of faith that intertwined with his Jewish identity. The Unique Culture of Russian Jewish Communities Today: Whether in Israel, America, or Europe, Russian Jews tend to maintain a strong sense of community. Many still speak Russian, preserve distinct cultural habits, and have a unique approach to Judaism and Messianic faith. Interpreting the Bible in Its Historical Context: The importance of understanding Scripture through its original Jewish and historical setting cannot be overstated. Engaging with Second Temple literature helps modern readers grasp the cultural and theological ideas that shaped early Jewish and Christian beliefs. Rabbi Shir highlights how 1 Enoch, Letter of Aristeas, and other Jewish texts offer helpful context for understanding New Testament thought. – Chapters – (0:00) Episode Introduction (1:24) Growing up Jewish in the Communist Soviet Union (4:20) Encountering the Evangelical gospel (12:42) Journey to recover Jewish identity (15:40) Becoming a Bible teacher (17:14) Challenges of being a Rabbi (20:17) Russian Messianic Jewish Community (27:02) Doctoral Dissertation on Ancient Foods (31:57) Academic exploration of Second Temple literature (35:09) Diversity of thought in intertestamental Jewish writings (42:38) Influential streams of Judaism (45:34) Best books of Second Temple literature (51:21) Unheard voices of Hebrew kings and prophets – Resources – Pinchas Shir Online: https://pshir.com Unheard Voices of Hebrew Kings and Prophets, by Pinchas Shir https://www.amazon.com/Unheard-Voices-Hebrew-Prophets-Literature/dp/B0CKXK5DFH

Episode 268: Conspiracy: Why FDR's White House Ignored a Chance to Change History with Chris Farrell and Shea Bradley-Farrell

“What if in 1943 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his White House advisors had acted on an offer from high-ranking German officials that they were prepared to kidnap Adolf Hitler and all of his top cronies.  They would then turn Hitler over to the United States and sign an armistice ending the war with Germany. The German high officials wanted then to join with the United States to stop the Communist Soviet Union from advancing in Europe. They had a well-thought out plan as to which units they knew were loyal, what units they knew would actually move on the Wolf's Lair, Hitler's Prussian, and the East Prussian headquarters. FDR learned of this proposal from a man the Germans believed would be their most credible emissary:   George H. Earle III, a Main Line Philadelphia millionaire, war hero awarded the Navy Cross, Pennsylvania governor, Ambassador to Austria and Bulgaria, friend and supporter of Franklin Roosevelt, generous donor to humanitarian causes, colorful playboy, and spy.  Yet FDR did not act on the stunning offer, and the rest as they say, is History. The Soviets conquered part of Germany and all of Eastern Europe and closed it behind an iron curtain that would endure for over four decades. Here to tell this story is Chris Farrell, who for the last 25 years has been the Director of Investigations & Research at Judicial Watch and author of “Exiled Emissary: George H. Earle III”    and  Dr Shea Bradley Farrell, author of “Last Warning to the West”, the founder of Counterpoint Institute and who has written extensively about the agonies of Eastern Europe under Communism.  “This is not one of these books that examines an alternative history,” explains Chris. “Everything in the book is documented, for example, from the National archives, the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg, or the Pennsylvania Historical Society in Pennsylvania. Or from personal records from the Earle family.” Why this story matters today is not just that FDR did not act but why he didn't. As records have become public, we have learned that were many staunch supporters of the Soviet Union and its Marxist social experiment in both the FDR and Truman White Houses. Alger Hiss was FDR's key aide at Yalta.  “What Earle was saying was, “Look, the real threat is the Soviet Union. We may have been allied during the war for whatever reason you want to explain, but they're a civilizational threat."”  But many in the 1940s White House did not want to act against the Soviet Union. They supported it.  The Soviets then. China today. The United States has a long troubled history of “elite capture.”  Chris and Shea tell a compelling story. You can learn much about history from this episode. But it's how it reflects on today that's really chilling. What does John Kerry say when he's meeting with the Chinese?

Sean gets another legal lesson in this expert breakdown and analysis by former Professor Emeritus and U.S. Constitutional & Criminal Attorney Alan Dershowitz. Alan unpacks how the Alejandro Mayorkas impeachment case holds no water for the same reasons Trump's former impeachment case was insufficient. Alan argues that impeachment actions should be tucked back away behind the "break glass in case of emergency" cabinet. Alan argues the absolutely baseless claims for every Trump legal cases, but one. The case in D.C. regarding January 6th, will be tried by a 95% democrat jury and result in a conviction. How quickly the case gets seen will determine its impact on the 2024 election. Finally, Alan Dershowitz admits that CNN has gone full-on Pravda, the former official newspaper of Communist Soviet Union known for its Marxists-Communists ideas. Learn more about your ad choices. This episode first examines the Great Leap Forward in China, an instance of bad Maoist policies creating mass starvation. We then discuss diplomatic exchanges between the superpowers in 1959, including the Kitchen Debate between Khrushchev & Nixon, as well as the Soviet Premier's cordial visit to the USA later that same year. But the main portion of our program explores the causes, consequences, & legacy of a dramatic political revolution in the Caribbean island nation of Cuba. The January 1959 Cuban Revolution was a key turning point in the history of the Cold War. US support of dictator Fulgencio Batista, alongside the heavy influence by American corporations & organized criminal syndicates on the island, led Cuban revolutionaries such as Fidel Castro & Che Guevara to distrust the United States. They instead pursued an alliance with the capitalist Americans' archrival, the Communist Soviet Union. This pact panicked the Eisenhower Administration. In response to the emergence of a Marxist regime in Cuba, the USA attempted to adopt more humane policies toward other Latin American nations (in an attempt to prevent similar left-wing revolutions), while simultaneously taking a very hard line against Castro. By 1960, the CIA was training anti-Castro Cuban exiles to invade the island & topple the regime. In the early 60s, tensions over the fate of Cuba would bring the two superpowers to the brink of nuclear war. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/boomertomillennial/posts)

It seems only fitting that I chat with Bruce a year later after running jets up the Salmon through the Frank Church Wilderness. And this time we're also joined by Bruce's good friend, Pat Juhl. Pat's passion is mule deer, having served both as the CEO and chairman of the board of the National Mule Deer Foundation. Bruce and Pat have hunted all over the world together, their most memorable expedition being a hunting trip to the communist Soviet Union just before the fall of the USSR in the early 90s.Rouge Jet BoatworksMule Deer Foundation

One of the most interesting questions of modern history is this: Why is it that Communist China was able to make a successful transition to economic modernity (and with it prosperity) while the Communist Soviet Union was not? In his excellent book The Struggle to Save the Soviet Economy: Mikhail Gorbachev and the Collapse of the USSR (UNC Press, 2016), Chris Miller offers a convincing explanation for the divergent paths of these two Marxist-Leninist powers. Miller shows that Mikhail Gorbachev knew well about the on-going Chinese experiment, and he modeled much of what he attempted to do on it. Yet, as Miller argues, Gorbachev faced much stiffer political and ideological opposition than the Chinese leader, Deng Xiaoping, did. In the USSR, the Party was stronger and there were powerful institutional-economic interests standing in his way. In addition, Soviet socialism had “worked” for masses of ordinary citizens in a way that Chinese socialism had not; many “Soviet people” believed in the Soviet system and were very skeptical about the idea of adopting a new economic order. Caught between powerful elites and relatively satisfied regular folks, both of whom were beholden to the old ways, Gorbachev’s reforms didn’t really stand a chance. Learn more about your ad choices.
