Interview with Daniel Barbarisi who wrote about all the drama in the hunt for Forrest Fenn's treasure! The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame CEO has a message for us who are complaining. Callers on that Gov. Abbot announcement.
A decade ago, Santa Fe art dealer Forrest Fenn filled a box with a box with treasure, placed it somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, then published a poem containing clues to its location. Thousands of searchers would go looking for the loot, and five of them would die in the process before it was discovered last year. Nobody has followed this saga more closely than journalist Daniel Barbarisi, who broke the news of how the treasure was found and is now coming out with a book about the hunt, Chasing the Thrill. In this episode, our former host, Peter Frick-Wright, who published his own feature about the chase in 2015, digs deep with Barbarisi on the story that captured the world. Amalie Benjamin is not kidding when she talks about her need of reading. She is hardly, if ever, without a book or access to one. She has a goal this year to read 50 books. That’s a noble goal for anyone, let alone the mother of a young, growing family, and a traveling sports columnist for NHL.com. Amalie’s life as a reader comes to life as she talks about growing up in a household with dedicated reading parents and having a best friend, a high school history teacher, who’s an endless resource of good book referrals. Amalie is just as comfortable talking about Hop on Pop and other children’s books as she is about real-life journalistic thrillers: Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm, and Bad Blood. She really shines when she makes herself vulnerable. Her husband, fellow journalist and Dueling with Kings author Daniel Barbarisi, immersed himself deeply into the world of professional sports betting, sometimes putting more on the line than he let on. For anyone who’s ever felt the intoxication of winning, and the despair of losing, you’ll identify with Amalie and Daniel. A little later in the program, we’ll talk about the possibilities of that happening in MD. But first, a conversation with a person whose perspective on this issue is unique. Today, he is the President and CEO of LEAD1, an association of Athletic Directors at the most prominent NCAA Division One Schools. Tom McMillan joins us on the line from Washington, DC. Jeff Barker covers the business of sports and the casino gambling industry, among other beats, for the Baltimore Sun. He joins us from the studios of NPR in Washington DC.And, joining us on the line from Boston, Daniel Barbarisi, a journalist and author of book Dueling With Kings: High Stakes, Killer Sharks, and the Get-Rich Promise of Daily Fantasy Sports. Should sports betting be legal? It's a conversation that has been debated to death but one that could soon be resolved. Brett Smiley of SportsHandle.com joins Bart Winkler to talk about how it may be legal to bet on sports in a stadium near you in the next three years, if not much much sooner.Plus, Bart chats with author of Dueling with Kings, Daniel Barbarisi. The former Yankees beat writer tried his hand at daily fantasy sports and eventually was (quite) successful, but he had to go deep into the world of daily fantasy sharks to do it.
