Every Saturday, we revisit a story from the archives. This originally aired on April 28, 2021. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed. Two new reports – one commissioned by the French government and one by Rwanda's government – have underscored the role France played in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. But one critic says Rwandan President Paul Kagame's response to the reports may have more to do with his grip on power than it does on justice. That critic was once part of Kagame's government but now, he has gone into hiding. That is this week's episode of The Take. In today's episode, we are exploring the historical context for the family feud and violence between the Capulets and Montagues in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. We'll briefly revisit the history of medieval bloodfeuds that we examined in our episodes on Macbeth, then we will dive into the pratices of vendettas and dueling in the Italian renaissance and how this form of violence was imported into England, Scotland, and Wales in the late 1500s and early 1600s. We will examine the rise in popularity of dueling among young men of the English nobility and gentry, how the public theatres romanticized and dramatized dueling, and how Shakespeare wove this trend and reactions to it into the plot of Romeo and Juliet.  Shakespeare Anyone? is created and produced by Kourtney Smith and Elyse Sharp. Week two of the campaign has come and gone - so who are the winners? Well, if you go on polling alone, it's the new Government of National and Act. But if you believe that this campaign counts, if you believe that these events and stunts and announcements count for a lot, then there is still much to play for. For the record, I will repeat, I think the whole thing is a foregone conclusion. This, more than most elections, has already been decided on the Government's record. It's not about policy from the opposition, because most people already broadly know that the opposition is offering a change from the status quo. It's what happened when we tossed David Lange's Labour out. What happened when we tossed Robert Muldoon? What happened when we tossed Helen Clark out? For a variety of reasons, in Muldoon and Clark's case, we were over the agenda. In Lange's case, we were over the party imploding and the chaos. That's why they say Government's lose elections and oppositions don't win them. If you're interested in policy there have been some good ones. Act's law and order policy is full of common sense and scratches an itch felt by many a New Zealander fed up with crime. You can't argue with more doctors, except the fact Labour took six years to do it, which in and of itself is an example of why they are losing. National's literacy policy last Friday makes sense and many a parent will welcome a crack at tangible improvement in the classroom. But the downside of campaigns is the down in the weeds obsession you tend to get when the media put a lot of resource into a single event. When you're looking to eke every last dollar out of having journalists wander aimlessly around the country, you tend to end up with the nonsense we got on National's tax policy. Some economists thought there was a hole. My take - so what? There are other economists who don't think there is a hole. The Treasury PREFU said we aren't going into recession and the media swallowed that hook, line and sinker. Yet Bryce Wilkinson of the NZ Initiative wrote yesterday and said those numbers are bogus. Where was the media's obsession around that? Duelling economists is the sort of side show a campaign brings. But in summation, you can see poor, old Hipkins looking more and more deflated and Luxon looking more and more bullish. Seymour overplayed his hand a bit on the confidence thing, James Shaw called an Act MP a "clown show", Winston Peters refuted the polls, again, and I think one of the Maori leaders went surfing. Next week we have the debates. I don't put the weight some do on them. They're important, yes. But they aren't a deal breaker. As I say, my gut says this thing is over, the script was written over the past 24 months. We are, to a degree, going through the motions.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grieve to talk about their different approaches.  In this first of two shows we revisit the 2014 recording of Daniel Floyd talking with us about the 1940 original for our Disney Animated Series. Then with Victoria we look at why so many people angrily *loathed* the new Disney incarnation.  Next week, Del Toro, Shore, Benigni, Martin Landau, Udo Kier, Napoleon Dynamite, weird noises, strange perverts and the best animated version you've never heard of.  Guests: Daniel Floyd of New Frame Plus Victoria Luna B. In the first part of our analysis of President Putins speech to the Russian Federal Assembly we examine the part of the speech dealing with the Ukraine war and special military operation. This leads into a discussion of the class war that has been waged upon the Ukrainian working class by the oligarchy and why they turned to a coup when they couldn't get the EU agreement through in 2014. We then turn to look at old man Bidens ramblings in Poland and his farewell to Zelensky in Kiev. Outro music is The International sung in Ukrainian

Duelling speeches for duelling world visions. Ahead of the first anniversary of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin delivered a state of the nation address in Moscow, in which he accused a West bent on destroying Russia of holding Ukraine hostage. In Warsaw, Joe Biden was back in the same setting where the US president last year quipped of his Russian counterpart "for God's sakes, this man cannot remain in power". At the time, the White House rolled back those remarks. But was that and is that in fact the plan?

To kick off 2023, Allan and Darren continue their practice of asking how the events of previous year caused them to update their models of international affairs. But first they discuss PM Albanese's visit to Papua New Guinea and speech to the PNG parliament, and also a curious spat between the ambassadors to Australia from China and Japan, which leads to a larger discussion of different models of ambassador, and what a “Rudd model” might look like now that former PM Kevin Rudd has been named Australia's next ambassador to the United States. The band is back together! The popular Group Chat Round Table convenes in person for the first time in Real Talk history (1:00), as communications advisor Jenny Adams, lawyer Harman Kandola, and development consultant Jarrett Campbell gather around our Urban Timber table.  Harman's just back from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, so we start (4:40) with story time and a debate: who's Canada's most spectacular male athlete right now - Alphonso Davies or Connor McDavid?  Was it politically savvy or stupid for Danielle Smith to skip Rachel Notley's portrait unveiling? Jenny (21:33) tells us what advice she'd have given Premier Smith.  Duelling polls tell a different story re: what Alberta's next provincial election could look like. The crew reads into the numbers (39:31) six months out.  Jarrett grew up in Manning, Alberta, and has been a gun owner his entire adult life. We get into gun control in Canada (54:13), specifically the politics behind Bill C-21.  Our panelists are all plugged into Edmonton municipal politics in varying ways, so it makes sense to venture into current budget deliberations at City Hall (1:03:55). We tackle bike lanes, LRT and rec centre construction, the Valley Zoo, downtown revitalization (including City Centre Mall), and more.  Erin's pissed off at Metallica, and Kimberly and Janine aren't happy about the state of politics at any level. Would you have the honour to behave like a coward?'Eugene Onegin' by Alexander Pushkin is a novel in verse of an unhappy Russian dandy. Onegin lacks meaning from a city life and struggles to find it in the countryside, with the same superficial  gossip, flirtatious women and rash young men. The poetry is renowned for it's unique rhyme scheme known as the 'Pushkin Sonnet' or 'Onegin Stanza'.I summarised the book as follows. "It's easily my most favourite poetry that I've read. Not only does the style roll of the tongue but the characters, scenery, plot and narration all kept me highly engaged. My one gripe is that I don't know Russian so couldn't read this in the Russian original, although the English translation is still outstanding!"I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Liz Wendling discuss:Removing your blinders to move forward in business. The biggest mistakes lawyers make in growing their firm. Making a difference in the first 30 seconds of an intake call. The process to make the client confident and comfortable in you.  Key Takeaways:When you do everything well in a conversation, the close will happen naturally (but, yes, you may still have to ask for it). There is always selling involved. If you are in business, you need to sell to stay in business. Gather information and make the conversation about the prospective client and less about you and your firm. You have to set up the close from the beginning. You can't expect to hit a perfect hole if you don't set the tee up correctly at the start. "If you sound like everyone else, then they make a decision based on the lowest retainer. Differentiation begins in the first few moments of consultation by skipping the superficial crap that people still use. There is a better way and it starts with ‘before we get started.'" —  Liz Wendling Connect with Liz Wendling:  Website: https://www.therainmakingcoach.com/Books: https://www.therainmakingcoach.com/lizs-book/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lizwendling/Twitter: https://twitter.com/lizwendling4Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/insightbusinessconsultantsFind out more about Liz's Secret Shopper Offer: https://www.therainmakingcoach.com/law-firm-secret-shopping/ Thank you to our Sponsors!Legalese Marketing: https://legaleasemarketing.com/Moneypenny: https://www.moneypenny.com/us/Practice Panther: https://www.practicepanther.com/ Connect with Steve Fretzin:LinkedIn: Steve FretzinTwitter: @stevefretzinFacebook: Fretzin, Inc.Website: Fretzin.comEmail: Steve@Fretzin.comBook: The Ambitious Attorney: Your Guide to Doubling or Even Tripling Your Book of Business and more!YouTube: Steve FretzinCall Steve directly at 847-602-6911  Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions.  You're the expert. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Clem's Memo, published by abstractapplic on April 16, 2022 on LessWrong. Declassified document sourced from Cabinets and The Bomb by Peter Hennessy; reproduced verbatim. TOP SECRET GEN 75/1 28th August, 1945 THE ATOMIC BOMB Memorandum by the Prime Minister A decision on major policy with regard to the atomic bomb is imperative. Until this is taken civil and military departments are unable to plan. It must be recognised that the emergence of this weapon has rendered much of our post-war planning out of date. For instance a redistribution of industry planned on account of the experience of bombing attacks during the war is quite futile in the face of the atomic bomb. Nothing can alter the fact that the geographical situation of Britain offers to a Continental Power such targets as London and the other great cities. Dispersal of munition works and airfields cannot alter the facts of geography. Again it would appear that the provision of bomb proof basements in factories and offices and the retention of A.R.P. and Fire Services is just futile waste. All considerations of strategic bases in the Mediterranean or the East Indies are obsolete. The vulnerability of the heart of the Empire is the one fact that matters. Unless its safety can be secured, it is no use bothering about things on the periphery. It is difficult for people to adjust their minds to an entirely new situation. I noticed at Potsdam that people still talked of the line of the Western Neisse although rivers as strategic frontiers have been obsolete since the advent of Air Power. It is infinitely harder for people to realise that even the modern conception of war to which in my lifetime we have become accustomed is now completely out of date. We recognise or some of us did before this war that bombing could only be answered by counter bombing. We were right. Berlin and Magdeburg were the answer to London and Coventry. Both derive from Guernica. The answer to an atomic bomb on London is an atomic bomb on another great city. Duelling with swords and inefficient pistols was bearable. Duelling had to go with the advent of weapons of precision. What is to be done about the atomic bomb? It has been suggested that by a Geneva Convention all nations might agree to abstain from its use. This method is bound to fail as it has failed in the past. Gas was forbidden but used in the first world war. It was not used in World War 2, but its belligerents were armed with it. We should have used it, if the Germans had landed on our beaches. It was not used, because military opinion considered it less effective than explosives and incendiaries. Further the banning of the atomic bomb would leave us with the other weapons used in the late war which were quite destructive enough. Scientists agree that we cannot stop the march of discovery. We can assume that any attempt to keep this as a secret in the hands of the U.S.A. and U.K. is useless. Scientists in other countries are certain in time to hit upon the secret. The most we may have is a few years start. The question is what use we are to make of that few years start. We might presumably on the strength of our knowledge and of the advanced stage reached in technical development in the U.S.A. seek to set up an Anglo-American Hegemony in the world using our power to enforce a world wide rigid inspection of all laboratories and plants. I do not think this is desirable or practicable. We should not be able to penetrate the curtain that conceals the vast area of Russia. To attempt this would be to invite a world war leading the the destruction of civilization in a dozen years or so. The only course which seems to me to be feasible and to offer a reasonable hope of staving off disaster for the world is joint action taken by the U.S.A., U.K. and Russia based on stark reality. We should...
