Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast!In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps, Pacific FC, Vancouver FC, Vancouver Rise and more. To begin, they dive into the latest out of the Whitecaps, who are coming off a busy week, one that saw them take on the San Jose Earthquakes, FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo in an eight-day span. They did pretty well to get four points out of those matches, which were all on the road, but given the high standard they've set for themselves, they'll also feel they could've gotten even more out of those matches. Yet, as has been the case for much of the season, their attack has had some question marks surrounding it, while their defence has continued to play a big role in the results they've picked up. As a result, they'll look to avenge that set of results in their final MLS match before the World Cup break, which will see them take on San Diego FC on the road, in what is a rematch of the 2025 Western Conference final, with the Whitecaps aiming to pick up a big win to help maintain their lead atop the MLS Supporters' Shield standings. Otherwise, there's been a lot of news to follow elsewhere in BC, with the big one being the departure of head coach James Merriman from Pacific FC. Goals by Darren Yappi and Raphael Navarro (Pen) give the Rapids just enough to get past a red hot San Jose Earthquakes. Despite dominating the ball San Jose can't find the net and the 'Pids make them suffer. Rapids take the pitch one last time before the World Cup break on Saturday when they take on the FC Dallas. 

Rapids fall 2-1 in the first leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup. Goals by Zavier Gozo - 36', Sergi Solans - 68' give Real Salt Lake the lead and Colorado was not able to recover. Rapids take the field again on May 20th for the Quarterfinals of the U.S Open Cup against the San Jose Earthquakes. 

For the first time since 2016 FC Dallas won at Paypal Park, beating the San Jose Earthquakes 3-2 in thrilling fashion. Find Zone14 Coaching   Quick recap Tyler interviewed Ike Opara, a former professional soccer player and current coach, for the Elevate podcast. Ike shared that his college coach Jay Vitovich at Wake Forest significantly influenced his development through intentional coaching that effectively challenged and built him up as a player. Professional Team Accountability Characteristics Ike discussed the characteristics of best teammates at the professional level, emphasizing that self-driven accountability is crucial due to the focus on results and winning. He noted that coaches at that level typically don't have time for extensive development, making accountability from players essential. When asked about the transition from playing to coaching, Ike shared that he enjoyed coaching more than expected, particularly the development aspect, and found managing different player motivations challenging. Youth Soccer Development Coaching Insights Ike shared his experience as an assistant coach with a second team focused on player development from ages 14 to 23. He noted that players on the team were motivated to improve and reach higher levels, which was an enjoyable experience for him. In discussing American soccer, Ike identified a need to balance coaching with individual player freedom, particularly in youth development, as he observed that current coaching systems focus too heavily on pattern play at the expense of players developing their own problem-solving skills. Athlete Journaling and Performance Reflection Ike advised starting with simple daily journaling to build a sustainable habit, emphasizing the importance of reflecting on both on-field performance and personal life balance. He explained that journaling helps athletes and coaches see progress over time and understand how personal life affects performance on the field.
