His path took him through St. Louis Scott Gallagher — one of the nation's elite youth programs — and onto the field at Indiana University, where he sharpened the skills that would catch the attention of the entire league. But soccer wasn't his only calling. A multi-sport athlete from the start, Munie brings an athletic versatility to the game that sets him apart — something the San Jose Earthquakes recognized when they made him the 10th overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. If you loved this episode, drop us a review and rating — it genuinely helps us grow! ⚽

Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This week on Holding The High Line, we discuss the end of the Rapids Apertura. The guys banter about the end of the European season. Mark gets his flowers for Arsenal winning the Premier League. We talk Champions League and react to the USMNT roster. We break down the San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas game. The Pids made history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game. These matches had similar energy. Games of moments and goals where not a lot happened. Also, the officiating was a talking point. We break it down. The we take a step back and look at the season so far. It's great the Rapids are in the Open Cup Semifinal. The team is playing some good football. But looking at the MLS table, the results don't like. What does Matt Wells say about the style of play, mentality, and progress? Oh and we do some Rapid fire predictions for the rest of the season and the World Cup. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps, Pacific FC, Vancouver FC, Vancouver Rise and more. To begin, they dive into the latest out of the Whitecaps, who are coming off a busy week, one that saw them take on the San Jose Earthquakes, FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo in an eight-day span. They did pretty well to get four points out of those matches, which were all on the road, but given the high standard they've set for themselves, they'll also feel they could've gotten even more out of those matches. Yet, as has been the case for much of the season, their attack has had some question marks surrounding it, while their defence has continued to play a big role in the results they've picked up. As a result, they'll look to avenge that set of results in their final MLS match before the World Cup break, which will see them take on San Diego FC on the road, in what is a rematch of the 2025 Western Conference final, with the Whitecaps aiming to pick up a big win to help maintain their lead atop the MLS Supporters' Shield standings. Otherwise, there's been a lot of news to follow elsewhere in BC, with the big one being the departure of head coach James Merriman from Pacific FC. They dive into that news, before catching up with Vancouver FC's strange start to the season, in a CPL roundup section, before looking at the latest out of the Vancouver Rise, who are finally in the win column in NSL play. We'll kick off with a full breakdown of another 1-1 draw for the Seattle Sounders and why the result felt like two points dropped after the Sporting KC stalemate. Then, we shift into the ongoing discourse: who should lead the Sounders' attack? Was Danny Musovski's goal against San Diego enough to earn him a run in the starting role? We also address the emerging left-back issue after Nouhou appeared to take a knock late in the match, who might need to step in, and how that change could affect the lineup. Later on, we preview a daunting midweek matchup with the high-flying, league-leading San Jose Earthquakes and outline adjustments Seattle must make to survive a side in excellent form. Finally, we scan MLS Matchday 12, highlight LAFC's surprising collapse to Houston, and consider whether Concacaf Champions Cup fatigue is a league-wide factor.Follow Lobbing Scorchers: YouTube Instagram Bluesky TikTok Facebook Ari Liljenwall Noah Riffe Niko MorenoSPONSORS☕️ Lobbing Scorchers Kickoff is presented by QED Coffee a Seattle based roaster, coffee shop and coffee subscription service. Find Zone14 Coaching Quick recap Tyler interviewed Ike Opara, a former professional soccer player and current coach, for the Elevate podcast. Ike shared his journey from starting soccer at age three to playing in the MLS and eventually transitioning to coaching. They discussed the importance of intentional coaching, reflective journaling for athletes and coaches, and the challenges of balancing results with process-oriented development in youth sports. Ike emphasized the value of individual freedom for players' development and stressed the significance of self-awareness and journaling for both players and coaches. They also touched on managing stress and off-field influences in sports and the importance of maintaining a love for the game. The conversation concluded with Ike advising his teenage self to focus on enjoying the sport rather than just pursuing professional goals. Next steps Tyler: Edit the podcast episode and include Zone 14 Coaching website/link in the show notes, then send links to Ike when the episode is published (by the weekend). Ike: Join the scheduled webinar call on Friday later in the month. Tyler: See KC next week and coordinate potential in-person meeting/dinner with Ike in Kansas City. Summary Ike Opara Soccer Career Interview Tyler interviewed Ike Opara for the Elevate podcast, discussing his soccer journey from starting at age 3 to playing professionally and then transitioning into coaching. Ike shared his background playing for various teams including San Jose Earthquakes, Kansas City, and Minnesota, before moving into coaching roles with Sporting Kansas City's second team and as interim head coach. He explained his recent transition to creating planners for coaches focused on intentional coaching and player development, driven by his desire to give back to the sport while balancing family life with young children. Intentional Coaching and Athlete Development Ike discussed the concept of intentional coaching, emphasizing the importance of deliberate actions and creating a positive environment for both coaches and players. He explained the benefits of reflective journaling for athletes, highlighting how it can help them process emotions, identify patterns, and maintain a growth mindset. Ike also shared insights from his experience as both a player and coach, stressing the need for athletes to focus on the process rather than just results to achieve long-term success and development. Athletic Self-Awareness and Journaling Tyler and Ike discussed the importance of self-narrative and self-awareness in athletic performance. Ike explained how journaling can help athletes develop better self-awareness and objective evaluation of their performance, particularly in subjective team sports. Ike shared that his college coach Jay Vitovich at Wake Forest significantly influenced his development through intentional coaching that effectively challenged and built him up as a player. Professional Team Accountability Characteristics Ike discussed the characteristics of best teammates at the professional level, emphasizing that self-driven accountability is crucial due to the focus on results and winning. He noted that coaches at that level typically don't have time for extensive development, making accountability from players essential. When asked about the transition from playing to coaching, Ike shared that he enjoyed coaching more than expected, particularly the development aspect, and found managing different player motivations challenging. Youth Soccer Development Coaching Insights Ike shared his experience as an assistant coach with a second team focused on player development from ages 14 to 23. He noted that players on the team were motivated to improve and reach higher levels, which was an enjoyable experience for him. In discussing American soccer, Ike identified a need to balance coaching with individual player freedom, particularly in youth development, as he observed that current coaching systems focus too heavily on pattern play at the expense of players developing their own problem-solving skills. Athlete Journaling and Performance Reflection Ike advised starting with simple daily journaling to build a sustainable habit, emphasizing the importance of reflecting on both on-field performance and personal life balance. He explained that journaling helps athletes and coaches see progress over time and understand how personal life affects performance on the field. The discussion touched on the challenges of navigating social aspects in competitive sports, particularly when moving from youth to collegiate levels, though the specific details about NIL and contract pressures were not fully completed in the transcript.

Inter Miami were supposed to be unstoppable—but early in the season, they look anything but. Is this just a slow start, or is there something fundamentally wrong with how this team was built around Lionel Messi? We dig into whether David Beckham and the club's leadership miscalculated, why the supporting cast isn't clicking, and what Inter Miami can realistically do to fix things before expectations spiral out of control. Then we take a step back and look across the league. MLS always delivers chaos early in the season, but this year feels especially unpredictable. We break down the biggest surprises and disappointments so far, and spend real time on CF Montréal—a team that doesn't just look bad, but directionless. Is this a rebuild, a collapse, or something worse? Finally, we turn to the United States men's national soccer team and have an honest conversation about fear. Not optimism, not hype—fear. What are the two biggest things that could go wrong heading into the World Cup, and are fans ignoring obvious warning signs? We break down what's real, what's overblown, and what should genuinely worry supporters right now. Timestamps: (6:30) – Does Messi need a better squad around him? And that's after being up 1-0 early in the game off of Jacob Bartlett's first career goal. The joy on his face of scoring was quickly replaced with disappointed looks as Sporting were on the back foot for much of the last 15+ minutes of the half before finally conceding. But really, what should Sporting KC and their fans expect from this team?Sheena and I debate all the reasons things may be the way they are. From roster building to youthful inexperience and down to specific players and of course coaching and the front office. We also get into a few other SKC related stories, including Zorhan Bassong's new/old injury, Matt Besler and Cliff Illig being honored (and a Heart and Goal Podcast side conversation), SKC Academy news and the announcement of the "Soccer Capital Summer" watch parties at Sporting Park. Plus, I make the case Sporting KC should go for it with the US Open Cup on Tuesday. The KC Current are on an extended international break, but that just means it's Teal Rising Week. The Current attempted to defend the Teal Rising Cup with a victory over Corinthians to earn a spot in the finals. We also got an injury update on Lorena and Rocky Rodriguez earned another call-up and went ahead and scored a hat trick in the process. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:KC Comets playoffs endUSWNT winKansas City World Cup 2026 news and financialsNeymar to FC Cincinnati?CF Montreal has already fired another coachHere is a rundown of sections and start times:Sporting KC - 8:10KC Current - 1:00:40Digital Crawl - 1:03:23Upcoming GamesSporting KC @ Colorado Springs Switchbacks, TUES, April 14 @ 7:00PM CTUSWNT vs. Japan, TUES, April 14 @ 9:00PMUSWNT vs. Japan, FRI, April 17 @ 8:00PMSporting KC @ Vancouver Whitecaps, FRI, April 17 @ 9:30PMSporting KC II vs. Whitecaps 2, SUN, April 19th at 7:00PMAs a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled.com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. For the Glory KC is back with the 174th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City had another down week after coming off the international break. They travelled to the elevation of Salt Lake City, where they consistently struggle, and they did not look good against Real Salt Lake. Sheena and I worked through the moments of the game, the lineup choices and changes, the goals (and that freakin' golazo from Gozo) and what Wicky may need to do as guys get healthy or continue to join the team.We also talked about Capita Capemba officially arriving, Zorhan Bassong's extension and the sudden departure of Mike Burns as Sporting Director. We reflect on his brief time with the team and if it can be deemed a success. The KC Current rescued the KC soccer weekend by looking more like the team we remember from that dominant 2025 season. They got a tiny bit of revenge on NJ/NY Gotham FC after they eliminated them from the playoffs last year. Temwa Chawinga returned and had an instant impact and Croix Bethune moved to a new position and immediately showed her quality. We also talk about the news from the Keeping Current podcast where KC Soccer Journal Editor, Thad Bell, shared some pretty interesting thoughts about Vlatko Andonovski's involvement (or lack thereof) in some recent roster moves. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:USMNT losing to PortugalSKC II fall to North Texas SCWorld Cup updates on Turkiye, Italy and ticket pricesHere is a rundown of sections and start times:Sporting KC - 6:02KC Current - 40:31Digital Crawl - 1:07:38Upcoming GamesKC Comets vs. St. Louis Ambush, MON, April 6 @ 7:00PM CTKC Comets @ St. Louis Ambush, WED, April 8 @ 7:05PMKC Current vs Corinthians SC, THUR, April 9 @ 8:00PM (Teal Rising Cup - ION)SKC II @ North Texas, FRI, April 10 @ 7:30PMUSWNT vs. Japan, SAT, April 11 @ 4:30PMUSA U-20s vs. Brazil U-20s, SAT, April 11 @ 6:30PM (CPKC Stadium)Sporting KC vs. San Jose Earthquakes, SAT, April 11 @ 7:30PM KC Current in the 3rd place or 1st place Teal Rising Game (depending on results Thursday)As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled.com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. The Philadelphia Union fell to the San Jose Earthquakes by a score of 1–0, making it three straight losses to start the season for the club. It marks the first time since 2012 that they've opened a season 0–3. Todd and José share their thoughts on the match and discuss the continued lack of chances created for the forwards, the Union conceding yet another goal from the left back position, the absence of Cavan Sullivan last night, and how concerning the slow start is. The MLS season is heating up and we've got takes. MLS analyst Matt Doyle stops by to help us separate early-season overreactions from real trends. Is Julian Hall's breakout with the New York Red Bulls the beginning of a superstar arc or just a hot streak? Are Inter Miami CF papering over long-term roster concerns despite their win over Orlando City SC? And can the early momentum from the San Jose Earthquakes — and Timo Werner — actually last? We dig into what's real, what's noise, and what it means moving forward. Then we head across the Atlantic for an incredible conversation with Steve Fletcher, assistant coach and club legend at AFC Bournemouth. Fletcher gives us insight into why Tyler Adams is one of the most respected players at the club, how his leadership extends far beyond the pitch, and why every team needs a player like him. If you're an American soccer fan, this is one you won't want to miss. We also dive into the impact of manager Andoni Iraola and how his consistency, culture-setting, and tactical identity have helped elevate Bournemouth in the Premier League. Fletcher reflects on his own storied career — from signing in the early '90s to becoming the club's all-time appearance leader — and what it means to represent one club for over three decades. MLS chaos, Premier League insight, and legendary football stories all in one episode.
