Your supposed to avoid and escape from uncomfortable feelings and circumstances, right? In my experience, this is not always possible. When you're trying to cope with a difficult situation it's worth checking in with your sense of how well a strategy is working for you. You might find that while feeling stuck you're making things more difficult for yourself in your efforts to dig yourself out, control the situation and problem solve! This episode is based on the "person in the hole" metaphor, from the 1999 ACT book by Steven Hayes, Kirk Strosahl and Kelly Wilson - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: An Experiential Approach to Behaviour Change. I interviewed Steve Hayes about the use of metaphors in ACT, in episode 6 of this podcast, and David Gillanders made reference to this metaphor in episode 8!

For this episode of 'Metaphors for Life', I met up with David Gillanders from Edinburgh University to talk about the use of metaphors in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and in particular his invention of the sailing boat metaphor. Whilst often helpful in the delivery of psychological therapy with clients, metaphors can also show up in the context of clinical supervision; both for case conceptualisation as well as usefully exploring the struggles that therapists have themselves! "Talking about something else, other than the problem, although you're still talking about the problem (because it's linked to the problem), can lead to fresh perspectives, and a loosening up around how to deal with the problem, and trying out different kinds of strategies." David Gillanders is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and Academic Director of the Doctoral training programme in Clinical Psychology at the University of Edinburgh. He is also an ACBS peer-reviewed ACT trainer, and delivers training throughout the UK and internationally. Find out more on his university webpage: www.ed.ac.uk/profile/david-gillanders

This weeks questions from WAWID listeners are: Developmental trauma is currently at the forefront of research with better understandings of how trauma can effect childhood development. In your experience as a family therapist, what is the most important focus for families who are dealing with a child with complex trauma? Terra (Canada) Moshe, what do you think about guilt? Is it real, is it useful? Should one have it?  How is it enabling or impeding?  And what's it's relationship  to shame, particularly in a family context?  Any thoughts on this? Emily (Germany) For more information on Moshe Lang check out the show notes or listen to his 3-part episode on We All Wear it Differently. Season 1, Episode 27 - John and Matt brewed a special grisette-style saison, David Gillanders is back on the show, and we’re drinking a DIPA from Barley Forge Brewing Co.. John and Matt finally did some goddamn brewing, and they made a pretty great brew! Matt got his hands on a “special” strain of yeast (he really didn’t give us any details other than that) and called upon John and his pimp-ass brewing setup to make ten gallons of a grisette-style saison, aptly named Grisette Beta. To date, this is probably one of the best brews that has come from said brewhouse.  John’s Brewhouse It was originally intended to be a 4.0% ABV beer, but due to some miscalculations while mashing, the original gravity came out a little higher than it should have, thus raising the final amount of alcohol in the beer. This beer was very much an experiment for Matt. He was looking to have a solid session-able saison that he could brew the shit out of, and outside of a few tweaks that need to be made, this beer is pretty much what he wanted. Feature: “Going In Blind.” Sara joins us yet again for another round of Going In Blind. The beers this week were themed around witbier, and consequently, the tasting was a bit lackluster. But, yeah…listen to it anyway! Not to give anything away, but we may be experiencing some third-show-syndrome antics… Barley Forge Brewing Co. Keeping in line with said antics, we wrap this episode up with an excellent double IPA from a brand new brewery from Costa Mesa, California, Barley Forge Brewing Co.. Their beer, named One Louder is DANK! Like, WOW, in a totally good way. It’s a Hop Head’s dream. Yum. Barley Forge opened about three weeks ago and so far, we’re very impressed with their beer offerings. Barley Forge is definitely worth hitting up the next time you’re in the OC. Greg did a nice write up on the brewery back in July while it was still under construction. This week’s episode is sponsored by the OC Brew HoHo Holiday Ale Festival, which is Saturday, December 13th at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim, California. There will be a plethora of great brews on tap, and a butt-load of tasty food trucks. Check out the tap list, and head over to OCBrewHoHo.com for tickets.
