Tommy Czeschin was born into a life of mountains and lakes, so it's no surprise that he loves snowboarding and water sports-but what's shocking is that he was able to go pro in both. Not too bad for the quiet kid with talent who started ski racing and was the forerunner for the Jr Olympics before seeing snowboarding and making the switch. Within 5 years, he was traveling the world with the US Snowboard Team, standing on the top of World Cup podiums, winning X Games medals, and eventually making the 2002 Olympic Team. After his snowboarding, he was an early adopter of wake surfing and these days, he gets paid to ride behind a boat among other things. It's kind of like Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson, or a Shaun White-type story, only different. Red Gerard has won every slopestyle event out there: The Olympics, X Games, Dew Tour, World Cups, Grand Prix, you get the idea and Red is only 23 years old. While his life will be defined by his Olympic Gold, Red's snowboarding career isn't all about contests. He's just as comfortable taking his trick vocabulary to the backcountry and laying it down for his film segments. The beauty of Red is that while he's young, he's also kind of throwback. Growing up in North Carolina, in order to be as enthused about snowboarding as I was living in Raleigh, one resorted to VHS & DVD's to get stoked. Some of you may be very familiar with this approach and even perhaps with some of the production companies such as Standard Films and Mack Dawg Productions. Well, those were great, but it was a small crew which made up Robot Food that absolutely had me watching videos over and over and among that crew was Jussi Oksanen.Jussi was always one of a handful of my favorite riders to watch year after year - his style was fun, his creativity was clear, and I truly believe Robot Food wouldn't have been the same without him. Long story short, in combination of Instagram DM's and our mutual friend Matt, we set up a time to record, and I'm thrilled to share it with you today.Though retired from snowboarding, Jussi is still very much outdoors, though behind the camera as a commercial photographer producing images with the same sort of stoke-inducing outcomes. We chat cars, his snow career, cycling, of course watches, and I'll have you know Jussi's a real one. I hope you enjoy it. STANDARD H https://standard-h.com/ @standardh_ Jussi Oksanen @jussioksanen
While Lucas Foster is not a one-trick pony, when he landed his Alley Oop Double McTwist in the pipe, his career and his life totally changed forever. What's crazy is that Lucas grew up in Telluride, a place without a halfpipe, meaning Lucas came up learning his tricks at contests with barely any practice. Nowadays, Lucas has all the resources available to up the ante even more as he's a member of the US Snowboard Team, and at just 24, who knows what he'll add to his bag of tricks. On the podcast, we talk about his goal of being the GOAT, mentoring from Jason Cannon, contests, coaching, and more. Scotty Lago has a path to pro snowboarding that's different than almost anyone I've interviewed. Most high school dropouts don't have Olympic Medals to go along with a grip of X Games and Dew Tour hardware, but that's what Scotty Lago did. Along the way, he was part of the legendary Frends Crew, he filmed with Grenade, he filmed with Travis Rice for the biggest movies in snowboard history, and he did it all while riding for Flow Snowboards. When all was said and done, Scotty didn't retire into the sunset; he's now following his other passion of hunting, and just like in his snowboard career, he's already a sponsored hunter, and who knows how bug that world can get for Scotty. This is a fun podcast with an unfiltered legend and former Flow TM, Andrew Mutty asks the Inappropriate Questions. Kaitlyn Farrington grew up on a cattle ranch in Bellevue, Idaho. Life growing up was all about hard work, rodeoing, and, if there was fresh snow, skipping school to head to her home mountain of Sun Valley. Eventually, she switched from skiing to snowboarding, earned a scholarship for the Sun Valley Team, and things happened quickly. She went from being nobody to the World Cup to being named to the stacked US Team in a matter of years- she was always the underdog. But, in her biggest moment, she rode away with Olympic gold…and an injury took it all away. It wasn't always that simple though so today we dove right into the life story of the man behind Voice Of Reasons.

The path of a wealthy real estate investor is never a straight line. Often we'll set up goals we deem worth chasing, then somewhere along the way, we'll pivot to a more refined goal. Without knowing where we want to go, we can't get the proper footing to start the journey. This is exactly what snowboarder, skater, real estate investor, and lender, Chris Naugle, talks about with us today.Chris grew up in chilly Buffalo, New York and knew he wasn't the employment type of guy. So, after quitting his first job, he decided to start a clothing company in his basement. Then, with some of the profits from his clothing venture, paired with a loan from his mom's equity line, he opened up a skateboard shop. Everything was going well, until the dot com crash, prompting him to become an advisor on Wall Street. As an advisor, Chris found that more and more of his wealthy clients were investing in real estate. This prompted him to take the leap and start flipping, buying commercial real estate, and investing in rentals. But, Chris wasn't borrowing the right way, leading him to have to get rid of his 37 unit portfolio or go bankrupt. After losing years' worth of work and a massive amount of equity, Chris started to draw up systems and procedures that could work as a safety net for his investments. Now with a smaller portfolio of around 23 units, he works mostly as the bank that lends other investors their money. All of this was made possible when Chris stopped and thought about what his “perfect day” was and what he needed to do to make it a reality. In This Episode We Cover:Using flipping as an entry point to get into real estate investingBuying commercial buildings like strip mallsKeeping your debt-to-income (DTI) low so you can keep borrowingConventional financing vs. commercial financing for real estate investingThe “rules of engagement” when it comes to investingTrading money for money instead of time for moneyKnowing what your “perfect day” isAnd SO much more!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets ForumsBiggerPockets Youtube ChannelBiggerPockets MembershipHGTV's Risky BuildersEharmonyBiggerPockets Podcast 477: Discomfort & Uncertainty Lead To Victory with BJJ Black Belt Ryron GracieBiggerPockets Podcast 471: What Michael Jordan and Kobe Taught Tim Grover about “Winning”Check the full show notes here: https://www.biggerpockets.com/show478

"The Aspenaut" ....The Blade Dive Podcast, Episode 7. We are joined by JP Martin, a passionate industry enthusiast with Mountain roots most would only dream of. JP Martin, hailing from Aspen, CO, USA, humbly claims to be a jack of all trades, master of none. Growing up in this iconic Mountain town, rich with Snow Industry history, Martin identified with being original, by "carving" out his own trail through life. With Buttermilk Resort, Aspen, CO as his playground, the mountain quickly became a home away from home and influenced the creativity that JP Martin deploys to this day. Aspen High School, at that time, was was an open campus and if Martin didn't have a class scheduled, he followed Bob Klein, an early Burton Pro rider, and Chris Carroll, an advocate who worked tirelessly to allow Snowboarding in the slopes, at resorts. JP Martin went on to become a Pro Snowboarder, but credits his upbringing with the outdoors as to how he came to see equipment operations as a treat. Furthering his skill set, he pursued opportunities at enviable, big name resorts, such as JHMR, Jackson Hole, Wyoming / Sugar Bowl Resort, Norden, CA / Squaw Valley Resort, Olympic Valley, CA and Baldface Lodge, Nelson, BC, CA. Martin even became one of a select few that have completed ‘Railroad Training' at Donner Summit, Lake Tahoe, CA... allowing him to apply Snowcat operations, in areas one would never even think to.JP Martin isn't the first person to discuss failures on The Blade Dive, but he really digs into the depth of his... speaking to his life burn-out and quite literally, the implosion of his Terrain Park operations career, in an effort to help the next generation understand that if your "Imagineering Goggles" aren't focused correctly, the industry will chew you up and spit you out.Enjoy... and if you're in the machine, go ahead and TURN THE VOLUME UP!Follow us on:https://www.instagram.com/thebladedive/https://www.facebook.com/thebladedive

Commercial fishing has long topped the Bureau of Labor Statistics' list of jobs with the most fatalities -- and crabbing in the Alaskan waters is by far the most lethal form of fishing. Guest Robert Travis shares his experiences as a greenhorn deckhand straight out of Dutch Harbor and re-lives harrowing tales of surviving a treacherous 122-day stint fishing for Alaskan crab on the frigid, unforgiving Bering Sea. Read the full blog post for episode #145 at safetyphd.com. PRO SNOWBOARDER. After high school, Rob was a sponsored professional snowboarder and a coach at the Camp of Champions for four summers in Whistler Blackcomb - which is a ski resort located in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. By many measures it is the largest ski resort in North America. He broke his tib/fib in July and was put in full leg cast. The lure of adventure and cash called, and Rob cut off the cast with an angle grinder and headed to Alaska for crabbing season. ALASKAN CRABBING - SIGNING THE DEADLY CONTRACT. Rob shared that he nearly walked away from his opportunity to sign a contract with a crab boat company. The harrowing tales told by locals were just about enough to turn back the men that have a predisposition to seek this level of risk. However, Rob signed the contract and clearly understood the statement that he would experience injury or be killed by doing this work. Survive, and pocket more than $65,000 for 4 months work. Also, know that a 5-year “veteran” deckhand is a rarity as most are maimed or killed before they reach that mark. DANGERS ON DECK. Working on a 198-foot converted ice breaker, Rob was fortunate to be on one of the most durable rigs out on the ocean. Most crabbing takes place in the unforgiving Bering Sea. Ice can coat boat decks, 700-pound cages being winched aboard can lurch and sweep workers overboard. Even in a survival suit, designed to provide insulation from cold water, death can come before help arrives. About 80% of crab fishery fatalities are from drowning. WHEN THE HORN BLOWS. 16-hour shifts were typical and the swells often unrelenting. The job was so demanding that workers consumed 7000 or more calories daily (triple the intake of a typical adult male). There was one thing that every deckhand dreaded - a blast from the ship's horn. Rob explained that the skipper was in the wheelhouse and overlooked the deck. The skipper also monitored the ocean and could see approaching swells, some 60-feet high! The skipper would then blast the horn alerting the deckhands to immediately grab onto something sturdy and brace for the unpredictable combination of waves rolling over the deck, a rising or plummeting deck, and sharp angle tilts -- not to mention the possibility of a 700-pound crab cage breaking loose and skidding across the deck. Rob recalled the searchlights of nearby boats - trying to find and recover an overboard sailor. He noted that staying fit gave him a split-second advantage to getting to safety and noted that being light and fit are great attributes for this line of work. CONCRETE IN HIS VEINS. Concrete is the family business for Rob - it's in his lineage, the family crest. He was pouring 250,000 square feet a summer with his dad when he was 15 and started his own concrete company at age 17 - pouring in summers and snowboarding in winters. After the 2007 crab boat season, Rob decided to start a concrete business. After regrouping from damage sustained in a massive wildfire, he continued to expand his concrete work. He's won gold medals at the international polished concrete awards twice in craftsman and commercial division. ROOF TOP LIFE RAFTS. Roughly five years ago, Rob and a small group of friends were determined to design and build the best safety and survival gear for floods and natural disasters. Hence, Roof Top Life Rafts was founded. Millions of people around the world endure deadly, unpredictable floods from storms, natural disasters or failure of water management systems. Homeowners, office workers, students, all need a solution to get themselves to safety in an emergency flood situation. More about RTLR when Rob returns to the show later this year! FOLLOW DR. Facebook Twitter Instagram The Outdoor Biz Podcast Please give us a rating and review HERE Show Notes First Exposure to the Outdoors Well, I definitely have a lot from my parents growing up. I started skiing when I was three years old. I grew up in a military family, third generation military brat. I was born in Camp Lejeune North Carolina on a military base and we got shipped out to Hawaii and Boise. Dad was a captain in the Marine Corps. Eventually we got over to Yakima. But when we lived over in Boise, my parents were very active and athletic growing up and mom was really involved with horses and sports and dad was the super jock of just anything and everything. You know, a big thing for me is your dreams can come true. It takes a lot of hard work and passion. I guess I'm a living example of pursuing some careers that just, a lot of people just don't do, I mean K9 entertainment, there's like 10 of us in the world. I went for the dream of becoming a professional athlete and pursuing a sport that now is obviously huge, but you know, if you think you've got the talent, be realistic towards what you're pursuing and know of what you're up against. But if you have a creative mind and you want to pursue something, go for it Man. I love being an entrepreneur, it's made for some and not others. But I guess my biggest advice is just have patience, put in the hard work and pursue your dreams. You can achieve anything. Watch video or download podcast below"I need a break" said our said our guest Mica right before a practice jump for a competition. When she lands she breaks both her ankles and her professional snowboarding career is essentially over. Now what? Mica was nearly sunk practicing on that fateful day for a big air snowboarding competition. She was a professional freestyle snowboarder champion competing and winning multiple competitions. In 1997 Mica was the USASA Freestyle Snowboarding Champion as well as winning a number of other competitions and competing in the X Games. What's next? One day eating lunch she saw an advertisement for a yoga studio on the back of a weekly newspaper that said "Make Your Body Smile." Mica thought "what the hell is this?" Shortly thereafter she walks into a very hot yoga class. For years, Mica had a dedicated yoga practice of 3-5 classes a week. Yet she twice had self admitted temper tantrums and quit for a few months at a time. But she knew she had to keep going back. Mica says she now loves yoga and cannot imagine life without it. It has seen her through all the up and downs of all her many physical, emotional, and spiritual injuries. Three times Mica tried to go to teacher training. It was a big challenge for her to rearrange life's trajectory to do something that seemed so out of the normal. In 2008 she finally made it to Bikram's Teacher training in Acapulco, Mexico. Mica kept falling down a lot! For about four years Mica taught as much as she absolutely could, where ever she could. She literally jokes it was like standing in front of a room full of people in your underwear! In 2012 Mica began searching for a location near her that she could open her own studio. Opening a studio was a huge challenge. Then in May 2012 she opened Bikram Yoga Hazel Dell. The studio has been going strong ever since and continues to grow and expand, which she believes is a condition of the yoga! Now with four types of Yoga and Pilates offered, BYHD is the premier place for people to come for transformation, healing and community. Kevin Pearce grew up in Vermont with three older brothers who were very into snowboarding from a young age. Like any younger brother would, Kevin wanted to join in on the fun and tried to copy what his older brothers were doing and compete with them. Kevin eventually turned pro and began beating the worlds most renowned snowboarder in competitions, Shaun White. During our interview, Kevin talked about how he struggled tremendously in school because of dyslexia and found snowboarding as an outlet where he can succeed and ultimately make money. However, Kevin would be the first to admit that his entire identity was wrapped up in the sport of snowboarding (sounds like another Kevin you may know...). Like in many of the interviews I have done with successful athletes, it is almost necessary to fully immerse yourself in a sport if you expect to become elite. The problem comes when your sport is ripped away from you and its out of your control. It's a shitty feeling to say the least and it happens to almost every athlete at some point in their careers. In ideal situations, athletes career's come to an end on their terms. However, you can't control what happens to you as an athlete, especially when it comes to injuries. In the high stakes world of extreme sports, even at the peak of success, you never know when your last run might be. For Kevin Pearce, it was on December 31, 2009 in Park City, Utah after he crashed hard while attempting a new trick on the halfpipe. Complicating matters was the concussion he sustained a week prior in Copper, Colorado at the first olympic qualifier of the season. He chose to hide his symptoms because he didn't want anyone to tell him he couldn't snowboard (also sounds like another Kevin you may know...). Like myself, Kevin also suffered from Second Impact Syndrome after the December 31st crash and was put in a medically induced coma. He then spent 36 days in critical care until he was eventually transferred to Craig Hospital, which is a rehabilitation hospital that specializes in treating patients with traumatic brain injuries. Kevin made a miraculous recovery, but hasn't yet to make it back to the level he once competed at and says he is reminded of his brain injury everyday because of his residual symptoms. I watched The Crash Reel (featured above) prior to my conversation with Kevin and I was blown away. I recommend that anyone and everyone watch it because it shows the importance of a strong support system for any injured athlete and why you should listen your support group. This film takes you through Kevin's early life/snowboard career and his injury/rehabilitation. In addition it bring's you into Kevin's tight knit family and what they were feeling during and after Kevin's traumatic brain injury. All throughout Kevin's rehabilitation, he had the goal of returning to snowboarding, despite multiple doctors advising him not to. This drive to never settle for average pushed him to get better faster, but it also worried his family, especially his brother David who has down syndrome.
