The 2025 Season of Krunching Gears, episode 2. In this edition of Krunching Gears—The Rally Podcast, we chat with Mats van den Brand, who specialises in building and preparing BMW M3 rally cars according to FIA historic rally specifications. Mats is based in the Netherlands, and both Mats and his beautifully prepared cars are becoming a regular feature of Irish rallying. The BMW M3 E30 is an iconic rally car developed by Prodrive. It first graced the stages in 1987 in the hands of Bernard Béguin. He went on to win the WRC round in Corsica that year. In Ireland, the M3 dominated the stages during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Its agility made it a perfect match for Ireland's tight, twisty roads and was notably campaigned by Bertie Fisher, Austin McHale and Andrew Nesbitt.
David Richards talks about forty years of Prodrive, Chris Ward brings us up to date with news from HSR and Nick Daman looks back at the Singapore Grand Prix with his team by team review. This week’s Big Interview is with BMW Motorsport’s Andreas Roos.
We've got something a little bit different for you on this episode. Earlier this year, to mark the 40th anniversary of Prodrive, Edd Straw paid a visit to its Banbury HQ to interview its co-founder and chairman David Richards. Many F1 fans will remember Richards through his time with the Benetton and BAR F1 teams, and may know that he's currently chairman of Motorsport UK. But he also came very close to bringing Prodrive - so successful in rallying, touring cars and sportscars - into F1 on two occasions. In fact, you could argue that Prodrive is the best team to never race in F1…We hope you enjoy Edd's wide-ranging chat with David Richards, who has many a tale to tell about F1 in the 2000s and 2010s. We're talking to veteran engineer Phil Keed for this week's episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol. Although he's long been a fixture within the Supercars paddock, the first part of our two-part chat looks back at his career prior to joining the championship full-time in 2003. Keed talks about where his passion for motorsport came from, and how he got his start in the industry by cold-calling Colin Bond's workshop while he was still in high school! He shares stories of going to Bathurst with the team, and why they pointed him in the direction of becoming an engineer instead of a mechanic. He also shares a heap of incredible stories from his years in rallying, where he rose from working for Ralliart in Australia to becoming multiple world champion Tommi Makinen's engineer at the Prodrive-run Subaru World Rally Team.

This week's episode centres on the murky, oft overlooked and eternally understudied subject of Pre-Event and Performance Testing, an essential undertaking for any rally team seeking to make its mark in any given championship, from the Clubman level right up to the WRC. Joining us to help demystify this dense, delightfully technical subject we're delighted to once more welcome Richard Browne, the former Prodrive and current VW Motorsport engineer - and the individual who helped us debut Rally DNA way back at the start of the year. Richard was kind enough to give us almost an hour and a half of his valuable time to discuss the intricacies of test schedules, component destruction testing, the influence a driver's personality and experience can make on how a given PET plays out, and much else besides. It all makes for a fascinating insight into a world most of us will have precious little first-hand experience of and probably seldom think of, yet one that's a key component of successful rallying in the modern era. Be sure to follow/subscribe to Rally DNA on your preferred platform so you can be notified of new episodes and if you gave us a rating and review we would really appreciate it! Opowiadając o przebiegu sezonu 1995 można przytoczyć wiele momentów, dzięki którym był on wyjątkowy. My jednak przedstawimy go Wam przez pryzmat walki dwóch herosów rajdów lat 90. Carlos Sainz i Colin McRae.

Dan Burge, to most people, is a leader and a visionary. He uses his instinct and gut reaction, a skill that I think lacks in my generation, to determine his next move. We spend too much time overthinking and getting in the way of ourselves. This stops us from experiencing more of what the world has to offer. As Dan helps guide us through his career and the changes he made to himself and the culture to make to get the most out of those around him using his experience. He started in the aftermarket scene and swiftly made his way to companies like Prodrive and, following that, a big jump to Lotus in the world of OEM. Now he follows his gut and passion to the EVT group, where he gets to innovate and change how we think about electric vehicles. I cant wait to see what he comes out with, and I can't wait for you to hear this episode. Michael Schumacher. Jenson Button. Jacques Villeneuve. Colin McRae. Sebastian Loeb. The list of elite racing drivers David Richards has led is long and legendary. As an F1 Team Principal in the 2000s, he, Button and the BAR team challenged Ferrari for race wins. David tasted podium champagne, but the bottle never had ‘1st' printed on it. Not so in the World Rally Championship and at Le Mans, where his teams and drivers have won a multitude of titles. David tells Tom Clarkson the story of his incredible life in motorsport: success in rallying, decades in F1 with Benetton, BAR and Honda, and he remembers the behind the scenes negotiations to bring his own company, Prodrive, onto the grid. Plus, desert racing with Sebastian Loeb, Extreme E with Lewis Hamilton's team and his ongoing work to make motorsport more inclusive and sustainable as chair of Motorsport UK. In this week's episode; news including waves being made in the electric car world – but for average Joes, Janes and even Stephens, Prodrive is reimagining the Subaru Impreza 22B aka an automotive legend and never mind Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard or even Wagather Christie – VW looks to have settled a class-action over diesel gate – with each story accompanied by Hetesh's and James' take from the petrolhead's (often furious) perspective. To finish off the episode, there will be the weekly mystery car challenge and a run through the o' so vague “any other business”.
Adam has received a lot of Lego for his birthday and is now going to ruin his wallet. We also discuss the electric Cayman and there's some excitement about the upcoming Le Mans 24 hours. We finish off with the teaser from Prodrive and electric car conversions. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
For Episode 74 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Ryan and I talk to Cole Powelson about his run up Mount Washington, World Time Attack, and the two crazy cars that Lyfe Motorsports is getting ready for the 2022 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. I will mention that I was late getting Ryan the link for the Podcast, so I started to talk to Cole as he was getting set up, and asked about the electric Sierra car that he had just posted about on Instagram. that turned out to be a fantastic conversation so I left it in, but that is why you won't hear the intro to the episode for a bit. It sounds like a fantastic project and it sounds like a very cool application for an electric motor. If you haven't seen Cole's run up Mount Washington, you should definitely take a look at that. Cole took 2nd place over all, and set a new record for the rear-wheel drive class. Lyfe Motorsports is building two unique cars for the 2022 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The first is a Prodrive built GC chassis that is being updated with all of the best modern motorsports parts from a Rallispec engine to a Sadev transmission which we are really looking forward to see on Pikes Peak in a couple of months. The other is their 2015 Nissan GT-R known as "Frank the Tank". Cole ran the car at Pikes Peak before, but this time around it is being converted to rear-wheel drive, and it will have a Power Stroke Diesel under the hood. This was a great conversation for sure, and I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for listening and Stay Tuned!
Show #1459 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Sunday 8th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. ELECTRIC VW ID BUZZ STARTS AT 65,000 EUROS "The updated list of eligible electric vehicles published by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (Bafa) reveals something that VW only wanted to tell us at the start of sales: the price of the ID Buzz." "Bafa, which is responsible for promoting e-cars, gives the first ID Buzz Pro model available for sale with a net price of 54,270 euros. Plus the statutory sales tax, the Bully successor is around 64,580 euros and thus well above the 40,000 euro limit for the higher subsidy. The purchase bonus for the ID Buzz this year is still 7,500 euros, of which 2,500 euros from the manufacturer, so that customers have to spend around 57,080 euros on balance." "For the commercial offshoot, the ID Buzz Cargo, interested parties have to budget 45,740 euros net. With a premium, they come to a net purchase price of 38,240 euros. They get the sales tax back from the tax office anyway." Footage is shown of a hand scrolling on a smartphone with the commentary, “Right now it could seem like the only people who matter are the loudest….” Who could they be thinking of? - Then, it continues— “Those who want to tear things down and then fly away on their personal spaceships when things get hard,” A video of a rocket taking lift off fills the screen. - The rest of the ad is dedicated to profiling the workers of Ford, profiling a culturally and gender diverse cohort of people working by their first name. The narrator says that Ford assembles more vehicles in the US than other car manufacturers, which means local jobs. - The narrator continues: “… we've got 182,000 people, and they're building.” and goes on further to conclude, “you might not know their names, but these people get up every day to move us all forward.” Original Source : https://thenextweb.com/news/ford-snarks-elon-musk-and-celebrates-their-workers HOT VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 GTX TO JOIN RANGE IN 2023 - Volkswagen has been tipped to spice up its ID.3 EV with a performance version that will become the brand's first all-electric hot hatchback. And now, we know when it'll arrive. - Speaking at the launch of the new ID.5 SUV in Austria, Volkswagen product line spokesperson Martin Hube noted that the ID.3 GTX's entry to the range will coincide with the ID.3's mid-life facelift. “Of course the project is progressing,” he said, adding, “[For the] ID.3 facelift…we will get some very interesting details and of course, we are convinced that customer's expectations for a bit more power, for all-wheel drive is there, and [the] customer's wish is what we have to fulfil.” - This means the ID.3 GTX won't be launched this year - we're not expecting a facelifted ID.3 until 2023 at the earliest. - likely that the ID.3 GTX will use the same twin-motor powertrain as the ID.4 GTX, producing 295bhp. In the smaller, lighter ID.3, the GTX will likely undercut the ID.4 GTX's 6.2-second 0-62mph time. · Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/id3/355043/hot-volkswagen-id3-gtx-join-range-2023 TESLA OPENS MORE SUPERCHARGERS TO OTHERS - In Norway, Tesla has opened more Superchargers for other brands. After an initial test with ten sites in the Netherlands in November 2021, Tesla opened its first charging parks in Norway and France to non-Tesla brands this January with initially 15 in Norway and 16 in France. - In the north of the country, the entire route to the North Cape is not completely covered by Superchargers and in some places the distance between chargers is around 400 kilometres. · Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/05/06/tesla-opens-more-superchargers-to-others/ EXCLUSIVE CATL PLANNING EV BATTERY PRODUCTION IN UNITED STATES, VETTING SITES - CATL (300750.SZ), the world's largest battery maker, is in the final stages of vetting sites in the United States to build electric vehicle batteries, an investment that would mark the Chinese company's first production in the world's second-largest car market, two people with knowledge of the plans told Reuters. - Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL) is in talks to open plants that would serve BMW AG (BMWG.DE) and Ford Motor Co (F.N), and potential sites include South Carolina and Kentucky, where those automakers have assembly plants, - CATL had begun mass production of batteries for overseas markets in 2021 and was looking to lock in its standing as the major battery supplier to automakers overseas "in the next round of supplier sourcing," - Other Asian companies that have announced plans to build U.S. battery plants include Korea's LG Energy Solution (051910.KS), SK Innovation (096770.KS) and Samsung SDI (006400.KS). Show #799 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 4th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Welcome to two new Patreon Producers! MARK HEINLE SCOTT BERGER Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. DYSON CAR REVEALED IN FULL AS TIME CALLED ON ELECTRIC SUV PROJECT "Dyson has released new images of its abandoned electric SUV project, giving us a complete look inside and out of the firm’s abandoned Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace rival." says AutoExpress: "In April, Dyson released the first official picture of the car - a side profile shot backing up patent drawings previously published by trademarking authorities. Now though, we can see the design in greater detail, in particular the highly aerodynamic shape Dyson derived for the SUV. Huge, 24-inch aerodynamic wheels are fitted - something Sir James Dyson says is central to the car’s design, not only from an aesthetic standpoint but also for low rolling resistance and ride comfort. Smaller details include flush door-handles, tiny camera stalks in place of the wing mirrors and protruding, squared off wheel arches. Around the back, LED tail lights are positioned high on each corner of the tailgate. There is no traditional instrument panel - a head up display projects onto the windscreen, right in front of the driver. Almost every button to control the car is on the steering wheel, while further displays sit at each side of the dashboard - live feeds for the camera based side mirror system. The car’s climate control system uses air filtration technology developed from Dyson’s home products. " 3-row seating 7 seater active air suspension, speed dependant battery could swap out modules li-ion becomes solid state Dyson paid back a government grant when he cancelled the car 500 employees construction was underway for the factory to build it they're clear - it's not a failure https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/electric-cars/95371/dyson-car-revealed-full-time-called-electric-suv-project RIVIAN’S AMAZON ELECTRIC DELIVERY VAN STILL ON TRACK AS FACTORY REOPENS "Rivian, the electric vehicle company backed by Amazon, Cox Automotive and Ford, has resumed work at its factory in Normal, Ill. following a temporary shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the shutdown and gradual restart, the timeline for the Amazon delivery vans is still on track, according to a statement from Amazon released Thursday. In September, Amazon announced it had ordered 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from Rivian as part of its commitment to The Climate Pledge to become net zero carbon by 2040. Vans will begin delivering to customers in 2021, as previously planned. About 10,000 electric vehicles will be on the road as early as 2022 and all 100,000 vehicles will be on the road by 2030, Amazon said in a statement Thursday." writes TechCrunch: "Rivian has pushed the start of production on the R1T and R1S to 2021. The company had initially planned to start production and begin deliveries of the electric pickup truck and SUV in late 2020." https://techcrunch.com/2020/05/28/rivians-amazon-electric-delivery-van-still-on-track-as-factory-reopens/ THE PORSCHE TAYCAN IS NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER IN AUSTRALIA @PORSCHEAUS 3 Jun "The Porsche Taycan is now available to order in Australia. All three models, Taycan Turbo S, Turbo and 4S, will arrive from December 2020. Full story on the Australian arrival of the first-ever electric Porsche sportscar." The Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S are now available to order via Porsche Centres around Australia, with the Porsche Car Configurator now live with local specifications and pricing. The Taycan Turbo S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds, the same acceleration figures as a 911 GT2 RS. tOP SPEED 260KM/H. It has a combined range of up to 405 km# when the battery is fully charged. For charging at 400 volt charging points, a 150 kW on-board DC-Charger is standard in Australia. Porsche Cars Australia has partnered with Chargefox, Australia’s largest EV charging network operator. Taycan owners will receive a complimentary three year subscription to the Chargefox Ultra-Rapid DC charging network (up to 350 kW). https://newsroom.porsche.com/en_AU/2020/products/porsche-taycan-australian-product-highlights-21049.html NEW SOUTH WALES TO RAMP UP ITS ELECTRIC VEHICLE FLEET "In Australia, the New South Wales government has tripled its procurement targets for new hybrid and all-electric vehicles as part of its passenger vehicle fleets, according to local media." reports electrive: "This means that the NSW government will be purchasing around 900 new hybrid or electric vehicles each year, with around 300 of these vehicles being all-electric models. The NSW Treasury said that they actually achieved their 10 per cent fleet target last year. This means that of the 2,891 vehicles purchased, 692 of these were either hybrid or fully-electric vehicles." https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/02/nsw-to-ramp-up-its-electric-vehicle-fleets/ FORD WILL BE USING VOLKSWAGEN’S MEB ARCHITECTURE FOR ITS FUTURE EVS "The Ford-Volkswagen alliance has been brewing for a couple of years now. Things started looking stale in between, but it looks like everything is getting back on track. "According to Ford Authority, the alliance between the two automakers is expected to be finalized by the end of June. Also, the German automaker’s board has approved several projects, one of which is a new Ford electric vehicle that will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s MEB platform. Do you think it will be a badge-engineered ID.4 crossover?" asks TopSpeed.com: "the new EV will be built specifically for the European markets where the emission norms are a lot more stringent than in the U.S. The idea will be to develop either a small hatch or a crossover. The latter makes more sense considering the customer preference and market trend, but since the European countries will be receiving the Mach-E, Ford would be interested in building something smaller. Perhaps, even a hatch could be in the reckoning." https://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/ford-s-alliance-with-volkswagen-means-the-next-ford-ev-will-be-a-badge-engineered-id4-crossover-ar188603.html THE WORLD RX TEAM FUTURE-PROOFING RALLY CLASSICS "Front-running World Rallycross team GC Kompetition is known for running modern Renault machinery, whether it’s the Prodrive-built Mégane or the in-house developed Clio R.S. But the ambitious and comparatively young outfit is mashing up old and new by entering the world of restomodded electrified classic cars." says DirtFish: "Based on iconic models such as the Lancia Delta Integrale, the limited selection of cars will be handpicked by the French squad, before being converted to an electric drivetrain using a kit developed in-house at the team’s technical centre. The whole car, including the conversion and the necessary hardware, will be sold as one complete package." https://dirtfish.com/rallycross/world-rx/the-world-rx-team-future-proofing-rally-classics/ MASERATI GHIBLI HYBRID TEASER VIDEO ELECTRIFIES THE BRAND'S HQ "While we've known about the plan to create a Maserati Ghibli Hybrid for a while, the Italian brand has now released a brief teaser video for the electrified model. The clip shows lightning striking the company's trident at the headquarters and it glowing afterward, sending a shock through the whole building." says Motor1: Maserati originally intended to debut the Ghibli Hybrid in April at the 2020 Beijing Motor Show, but the COVID-19 outbreak forced the event's cancellation. The only technical detail that came out about the sedan at that time was that it allegedly used a plug-in hybrid system." https://www.motor1.com/news/426715/maserati-ghibli-hybrid-teaser/ LAUNCH OF THE ABT E-TRANSPORTER 6.1 WITH AERO PACKAGE The beginning of June sees the start of production of the ABT e-Transporter 6.1. As with its predecessor, ABT e-Line, an official premium partner of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, is responsible for converting the vehicle to electric drive. The ABT e-Transporter 6.1 delivers a maximum output of 83 kW and a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The vehicle will be available with top speed options of either 90 km/h or 120 km/h. The range is between 105 and 138 km depending upon specification (according to WLTP), (gross) battery capacity is 37.3 kWh. https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/20831/launch-of-the-abt-e-transporter-6-1-with-aero-package QUESTION OF THE WEEK Critics say EVs are on the for the rich, so what do you view as ‘affordable’ prices? A World Rally Car is the hardest racacar to setup. Ex-Prodrive rally engineer Damian Harty joins us on the show to make the complex simple. Damian helps us to understand what is really going on, what you can apply yourself and where to focus in order to drive faster. Episode Notes World Rally Cars are some of the hardest vehicles on the planet to setup well and to drive at the limit. The lessons learnt in this punishing environment can inform all your forms of racing. Join us for this fascinating episode where we start to get to grips with what is really going on when your tyre hits the road, and with what your competition car suspension needs to do in response. We tackle one of the trickiest subjects for any racer, that of understanding the role of the the damper (shock absorber). Through Damians clarity of explanation you will come away with a solid understanding of what is going on and why getting your wheels balanced is more important than you think. Next time the weather changes to wet will you still be tempted to wind off all your damper clicks? Grab a pen and paper to find out the answer to this common question, plus how to tackle many (many) other key performance areas in your own racing - oh and learn if Petter Solberg is really a nice guy ... --- Links in the show Damians Vehicle Dynamics Book Damians Scooby.net thread Mini World Rally Car --- Be sure to visit our website for more Motorsports articles and resources to help you with your racing: https://www.yourdatadriven.com/

Plug-in hybrid Ford Transit vans, a top-secret clean room, composites for Overfinch Range Rovers, running Aston Martin's racing team, control systems for America's Cup yachts, ballistic protection systems for the Royal Navy - these are all examples of work carried out by engineering and technology group, Prodrive. The business was set up by David Richards, following a successful career as a rally driver (he won the World Rally Championship alongside Ari Vatanen in 1981). Prodrive now employs more than 500 people across five divisions. “The culture from motorsport has been carried over into everything we do.” I went to meet David at Prodrive's HQ in Oxfordshire, to find out how he turned a passion into a successful business. As a former chairman of Aston Martin, David gives his thoughts on how Britain’s car industry can overcome challenges on a number of fronts. We also talk about overhauling British motorsport’s governing body, Motorsport UK. Behind The Balance Sheet is a business podcast, presented by Julie-Anna Needham. Each episode features an interview with a founder or leader. We hear about their business, discover what inspires them and find out what keeps them awake at night.
