No pizza jokes, no I'm-walkin'-heres, no big piles of trash on the sidewalks in this episode because Alex and Stephen are avoiding Manhattan and heading straight upstate for this episode's Power Rankings. Beers from Wayward Lane Brewing, Deep Fried Beers, Frequentem Brewing Co., and Fallside Brewing break out the chains, baseball bats, and broken bottles as they fight to the death in this Upstate New York Showdown. In the Beer News, Schlitz is closing but not before throwing one last party and Coors Light collabs with Cheez-It for a cheesy corporate money grab.  Thanks to Phase Three Brewing Company for sponsoring this episode. Sometimes you get beers that are more than a beer. They are works of art. Stigbergets has been one of our favorite Swedish breweries for a long time. They continue to excel at releasing different beer styles, particularly their DIPA. Dubbelnelson is a NZ style double IPA made with nelson suavin hops. It's smooth, tropical and way to easy to drink. UK brewers Beak are killing it with their DIPA game. Pop-Art continues their success. This DIPA comes in at 8% ABV and contains citra and nelson sauvin. Fuity, grassy and makes you appreciate the art of brewing. #beer #drinks #craftbeer #dipa #neipa

It's official. Beer festival season is in full swing. We're seeing new beers and new collaborations at every turn. What's even better is that we're seeing new breweries come to life, too. And in London last week, the capital's latest brewing business sprung into life. So say hello to South London's Palindrome Brew Co. Founded by Paul McTernan and Alin Sas, they're on a mission to make their mark with a community-focused brewery that puts hazy, hop-forward beers at the fore. But that's not to say you shouldn't expect other styles, too. Combining Paul's wealth of sales experience working for companies such as Verdant with Alin's deep knowledge of the industry, they've also enlisted Shawn Vail. Shawn is a graduate of the Siebel Institute of Technology. Moving over from the USA, he has previously worked for Stone Brewing Co among others, too.And last Saturday the team made their festival debut at Drop Project's excellent Friend's Fest, pouring their maiden IPA and DIPA releases. So what better time to catch up with one of the UK's most exciting new outfits. In this episode we speak with Paul to learn about how Palindrome came to be. Why leaving his dream job at Verdant was a step he needed to take and the brewery's focus on kegged output. We also discuss how Shawn's brewing prowess is already paying dividends and why figures such as Elusive Brewing's Andy Parker played a key role in setting Paul on his own path in beer. When it comes to treating chronic sinus disease with nasal polyps…what's the best approach, surgery or biologics?Well, the answer is it's usually not either-or anymore. When patients are trying to manage these challenging conditions, some people opt for one or the other. But more physicians are finding that surgery and biologics aren't different paths. They are actually treatment protocols that complement each other.Surgery may remove the growths, but it doesn't necessarily stop the process of creating them in the first place. Biologics may suppress the inflammatory pathways driving recurrence, but they don't physically restore blocked sinus anatomy or remove bulky disease. We're entering a new phase of care where the question is no longer “surgery or biologics?” but how both can work together as part of a personalized strategy.Instead of treating every patient the same way, physicians are now looking deeper at the inflammatory pathways driving disease, recurrence risk, quality of life, and even how different biologics target different parts of the immune cascade. The shift is moving chronic sinus care away from a one-size-fits-all model and toward precision medicine that's designed around the individual patient. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Tassos Hantzakos, staff physician in otolaryngology and residency program director at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, and Dr. Deepa Sheth, allergy and immunology specialist.Together, we break down how the treatment landscape for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps is evolving, why collaboration between ENT and allergy specialists is becoming essential, and how biologics are reshaping the future of inflammatory airway disease management.Things You'll Learn In This Episode Not just a surgical problemFor decades, treatment focused on physically removing nasal polyps, but many patients still experienced recurrence. Why does surgery alone often fail to stop the disease?Biologics are changing how we think about airway diseaseNew biologic therapies are targeting different parts of the inflammatory cascade. How do physicians decide which biologic is the best fit for a specific patient? The future of treatment is collaborative, not competitiveThe conversation is shifting away from “surgery versus biologics” toward integrated care between ENT surgeons and allergists. When should surgery come first, and when should biologics be introduced?Precision medicine is reshaping chronic inflammatory careDifferent patients may require different treatment approaches. How does identifying the root inflammatory driver completely change long-term management outcomes?Guest BioDr. Tassos Hantzakos is a staff physician in the Otolaryngology Department at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Integrated Surgical Institute, where he also serves as Program Director of the Otolaryngology Residency. His clinical expertise spans otolaryngology, rhinology, phonosurgery, laryngeal laser surgery, and voice disorders. Before joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Hantzakos served as a consultant within the Hellenic National Health System, Director of the Voice Clinic at NUKA, and Clinical Associate Professor at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine in the US. He has contributed to numerous international journal articles and textbooks and is actively involved in several professional societies, including the European Laryngological Society, the International Association of Phonosurgeons, the Voice Foundation, and the European Society for Swallowing Disorders. In a time before hazy, there once was the Double IPA: malty, boozy, bold, and bitter. While some trends suggest the days of haze are a bit behind us, will we see a resurgence of the old school DIPAs of yesteryear? Or will it just be more of the same pale and fruity modern "West Coast" versions? We drink five classic examples that we hope separate themselves from the current trends, and find that some hit that nostalgic target just right. For episode 280 of the Metta Hour, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Insight Meditation Society, which opened doors on Valentine's Day in 1976. Today, IMS is one of the Western world's oldest and most respected meditation retreat centers, dedicated to providing a spiritual refuge for all who seek freedom of mind and heart. The Retreat Center offers a range of silent meditation courses, ranging from a weekend to three months. IMS Online offers retreats, sanghas, dharma talks, courses, and other programming to support your practice from our virtual meditation hall. IMS also has two adjacent retreat facilities – the Retreat Center and the Forest Refuge – that are set among almost 400 secluded wooded acres in the quiet country of central Massachusetts. In this episode, Sharon presents a special episode from the archives of IMS history featuring her teacher Dipa Ma. Originally recorded in October of 1984, when Dipa Ma was visiting IMS, this dharma talk was given as part of the 1984 three-month retreat. Through an interpreter, Dipa Ma shares the story of how we came to meditation following tremendous loss. She reflects on her early years of practice under the tutelage of Anagarika Munindra and how she gradually began teaching meditation. She also takes questions from the audience about her practice from the attending three-month retreatants. How many grams per litre of dry-hopping creates those big juice DIPA flavours?  What cereal should we use to create a self-stable haze?  What are the correct additives and E-numbers that will give us the right hue to our teal coloured slush-puppy sour...?  These questions are great but unless we dig deeper to unearth how we can grow our raw ingredients in unfavourable conditions, then perhaps synthetic-coloured beers are all we can look to in a dystopian future where smoothie-sours are the norm.In this episode, we explore why agricultural research is imperative for the future of brewing.  Specifically looking at hops, Nick hosts a round table discussion with Will Rogers from Charles Faram, Duncan Westbury - Dean of Land and Property Management at the Royal Agricultural University - and Scientific Researcher, Josh Brett to answer this question.THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY:Charles Faram & Co (charlesfaram.com)Supplying hops for over 150 years, Charles Faram offers a vast range of nitrogen-flushed hop varieties from the UK, Europe, New Zealand, and the USA.Crisp Malt (crispmalt.com)Since 1870, Crisp has blended tradition with innovation, producing malts like Chevallier Heritage and Clear Choice Malt.FOLLOW HOP FORWARDhopforward.beer | LinkedIn | BlueSky | Instagram

When we talk about health, most of us focus on diets, exercise programs, or even the latest weight-loss medications. But one element rarely gets enough attention: living with intention. Intentional living isn't just a feel-good buzzword. Research shows that when our daily habits align with our values, we see measurable improvements in blood sugar, blood pressure, immune function, and even cancer risk.  In fact, intentional living creates a powerful feedback loop: reducing stress hormones like cortisol, strengthening resilience, and anchoring us in self-love rather than self-criticism. Without this intentional foundation, even the “best” diets or medications can backfire, leading to muscle loss, burnout, or self-sabotage. On the flipside, small, value-driven changes act like compound interest, adding years of vibrant life to our “health bank.” How do we actually make intentional living sustainable? How do we rewire identity, self-talk, and even our microbiome to support long-term health? In this episode, I'm joined by Dipa Chauhan, a retired pharmacist turned functional medicine provider, author of Healing Habits, and creator of the Living Light Metabolic Reset Program.  After surviving life-threatening childbirth complications and reclaiming her health through nutrition, self-love, and lifestyle choices, she now helps others make intentional living both simple and sustainable. Together, we unpack the science, spirituality, and daily practices behind intentional health, and why even the smallest steps can transform your energy, resilience, and future.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Why identity matters more than willpower Unaddressed negative self-talk sabotages positive changes. How do you create the identity shift that makes new habits stick? -Personalized nutrition decoded Everyone responds to diets differently. Why do Mediterranean or paleo-style diets work differently depending on your genetics and microbiome? -Eating the rainbow, simplified What happens to blood sugar, immunity, and gut health when you build meals around color diversity? -Navigating social events with intention It can be challenging to stick to good eating habits in social settings. What practical strategies help you stay aligned with your values without missing out on connection or joy?   Guest Bio Dipa Chauhan is a Functional Medicine and Weight Loss Expert, co-founder of The Living Proof Institute, creator of the Living Light Metabolic Reset, and author of Healing Habits. It's time to play Martin's favorite game. Let's discover a new brewery. It's not so much a game as an obesssion. This time he found a brewery from Ontario, Canada. Badlands Brewing has some releases at Systembolaget so we jumped at the chance to try them. Secret Wave is an annual release of a Hazy IPA. Made with galazy, nectaron and simcoe, it's got tons of tropical and citrus notes. Badlands does a monthly DIPA release. They start with a base recipe and then go crazy with the hops. March DIPA uses peacharine, HBC 1019 and sabro hops. It's a peachy treat! #beer #craftbeer #drinks #dipa

A selection of quotes and extracts from teachings of Dipa Ma taken from the website: https://dipama.com/ Nani Bala Barua (25 March 1911 – 1 September 1989), better known as Dipa Ma, was an Indian meditation teacher of Theravada Buddhism and was of Barua descent. She was a prominent Buddhist master in Asia and also taught in the United States where she influenced the American branch of the Vipassana movement. Dipa Ma was a woman of extraordinary wisdom, concentration, and lovingkindness. She was a rare example of a mother and grandmother who became a realized spiritual Master through her unwavering determination and heart. She taught many of the Vipassana Buddhist teachers in the West (including Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, and Joseph Goldstein), and the stories about her continue to inspire Buddhists and spiritual seekers today.
