This week's guest is a true BAD ASS. Not because he's BIG, he's also had 40 years of Martial Arts training. He earned Black Belts across multiple disciplines. But just like in Martial Arts, he didn't get his career starting at the top. He began his journey as a white belt, packing boxes at the warehouse in the early days of Billabong. Fast-forward 30 years, he climbed the ranks to a Black Belt level career, serving as a Global VP of Supply Chain at Volcom. He led the responsible production compliance, championing for fair labor practices, and played a key role in the groundbreaking sustainability initiative “Farm to Yarn”. This guy is incredible, he is also certified firearms instructor. He's a security and protection specialist who provides tactical and medical training for both professionals and civilians through his company Mana Group Training Solutions. We're fired up and welcome to show, our good friend, Tony “BIG TONY” Alvarez.
If you have been involved in surf, skate or snow sports in the last three decades; you've been impacted by Thom McElroy. Thom stands as one of the most influential creative minds to emerge from modern surf culture. Along with Volcom founder Richard Woolcot and co-founder Tucker Hall, he helped redefine what a surf brand could be. And helped shoot it to the moon. With a background in graphic design and marketing (and his own firm McElroy Communications) Thom was working with other leading surf industry brands while he quietly helped to build Volcom into one of the biggest action sport brands in the world. And… he helped infuse it with an identity that blended surf, skate, snow, music, and art. His work created trends, changed the energy of youth culture and inspired a generation to think differently about creativity and individuality… in and out of the water. Thom has always had a clear belief in the importance of culture, following his gut, surrounding himself with great people, mentors and mentoring; while staying committed to surfing every day… still to this day. He championed, and employed athletes, artists, and creatives who embodied originality over conformity, pursued working and playing hard, while helping elevate Volcom and many, many other brands, on the global stage. For much of the outside world, Thom McElroy may not be a well known name; but if you are in the inner circle of the action sports industries, you absolutely know, or know of Thom. Today Thom is a prolific mentor, board of director member, community member, prone paddler, family man and a full on surf turkey. It's an amazing story of working your tail off, loving what you do, and making an impact on those around you… and on some of the biggest brands in the world. 0:00 – “Introducing Thom McElroy & Episode Overview” 2:25 – Thom's Background & Early Journey 7:10 – Key Turning Points in His Career 12:05 – Challenges Faced & Lessons Learned 17:20 – Building Experience & Developing Skills 22:40 – Mindset, Discipline & Consistency 28:05 – Navigating Pressure & Decision-Making 33:30 – What Separates High Performers 38:55 – Personal Growth & Long-Term Perspective 44:20 – Advice for Those Starting Out 49:45 – What's Next & Future Vision 55:10 – Final Thoughts & Takeaways
Our guest this week grew up like so many of us groms do, Surfing, Skateboarding, and Snowboarding. But for him, snowboarding took the lead, opening doors to sponsorships and, more importantly, a firsthand look at product testing and R&D. That early spark turned into a lifelong path and what has now become an incredible 25-year run in design and product development. He's helped shape product and creative direction for some of the biggest names in outdoor and lifestyle. He spent 13 years at Volcom designing across men's, boys', and outerwear, eventually rising to Global Design Director. From there, he went on to serve as VP of Design and Merchandising at O'Neill, then Design Director and Head Designer at Roark for six years. Along the way, he and his wife also launched their own design and consulting firm, The Designers Geary.About three years ago, he took everything he'd learned, from technical performance to timeless function and built something of his own: SPC/LST, PERSON-built gear for life on the road made with technical materials and functional essentials designed to last a lifetime. We're fired up to sit down and hear about his journey, his creativity, and everything he's learned along the way. Please welcome Mr. Danny " D4" Geary.
Our guest this week is a true creative hustler, a Surfer, skater, musician, and entrepreneur who has been building brands since high school. Gabriel Medina just walked away from Rip Curl after 16 years—and the surf world is officially changing. In this episode of Pinch My Salt, Sterling Spencer and Cousin Ryan break down the biggest surfing news and what it means for pro surfing contracts, surf sponsorships, and the future of the surf industry. Are legacy surf brands like Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver and Volcom losing their grip? Why are top surfers chasing new deals, luxury brands, and short-term “collabs” instead of lifelong sponsor relationships? We talk Gabriel Medina, Yago Dora, and how “surf teams” and big surf movies are fading while surf vlogs, YouTube surfing, and surf podcasts are taking over. If you're into surf culture, corelord vs zest, behind-the-scenes surf business talk, and hilarious hot takes, this one's for you. Watch to the end for bonus chaos, old-school surf nostalgia, and the real truth about where surfing is headed in 2026.Sterling's got opinions. Ryan's got questions. And the surf industry's got problems.
Born in 1976, hailing from Narrabeen on the northern beaches of Sydney, Oscar "Ozzie" Wright burst onto the scene in the mid-1990s and swiftly ascended to global surf fame—never in contests, but nearly always doing something imaginative, like flying through the air, doing spell-casting things with the tube, or surfing remote Indo in a pair of handcrafted bat wings. Wright appeared in a number of Volcom-produced videos, among them BS!, Psychic Migrations, Lobotomy, and One Hundred and Fifty Six Tricks. A prolific maker of artwork in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, ceramics, furniture, skate ramps, film, and video, Wright is also lead singer of the Goons of Doom, an experimental, piss-taking punk band. In this episode of Soundings, Wright sits down with host Jamie Brisick to talk about the differences between North and South Narrabeen, airs, childhood memories, the influence of grunge, dealing with criticism, style, unlocking the self through creativity, going on tour with his band, and finding fun in subpar waves. Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin).

Terminamos com Rick Davies do Supetramp cantando e tocando From Now On do album Even in The Quietest Moments.Saravá Silvio Tendler!
Our guest this week is an industry veteran with over three decades of experience. From Astrodeck to World Jungle, and an impressive 25-year run at Volcom, he's done it all. He worked his way up from managing athletes and Surf Teams to overseeing multi-million-dollar marketing budgets and executing major global Surf events as Volcom's VP of Global Surf Marketing. His impact with brand storytelling aligning marketing and products is why Volcom stayed at the Top of the game for so long! We're stoked to sit down and welcome to the show Mr. Brad Dougherty.
Today's guest is John Clapham or JC, and I met him in Raglan, New Zealand last year when I walked into his shop hoping they weren't yet closing and said while huffing from my brisk walk, “What time do you close?” He responded with a smile, “depends on whose asking…LOL." And from there, we ended up chatting for about half an hour.I left thinking, I want to hear more of this guy's story.JC didn't go to college and worked his way up from tagging surf leashes in a retail shop to becoming CEO of Volcom Australia. He is the co-founder of the Raglan Surf Emporium, is a partner of Raglan Roast Coffee - which now has eleven locations across New Zealand - owns a gas station, holds major real estate investments, and continues to consult and build new ventures. In today's episode, we only scratch the surface of JC's journey. Episode #23. ENGLISH Guest: Stephane Marteau (MC Box Events) If you've been to any major surfing events in France over the past 15 years, chances are you have seen a yellow background with the big black letters « MC BOX » on pick-up trucks driving along the beach or on the back of staff T-shirts. These letters represent the company, that Stéphane Marteau founded in 2008 and which has become a benchmark in cultural and sporting events management. They also embody his successful path through the initially emergent and eventually blazing surfing industry, some fifteen years earlier. Stéphane sat down with us to talk about his formative years in the Sarthe. He talks about elite horseback riding but also how he first got into skateboarding and waves, which would completely upend his world. After discovering snowboarding in the Alps and later Hossegor in the early 90's, he eventually came to understand that was where he wanted his life to go from that point on. Over a 30-year career, Stéphane has had a variety of jobs which would all, unbeknownst to him, be stepping stones towards his own success with MX BOX Events…they would also make for many great stories. But events are not Stéphane's only playing field. He will also tell us about his successful experience in the restaurant business and his ambitions in business tourism. Today he continues to pursue these other projects, while keeping a sharp eye on the various key events he's involved in, from the Paris-Dakar, to Hell Fest, including the Roland Garros French Tennis open, and of course surfing events that intertwine with action sports culture, its industry and athletes. This episode throws a rare light on a key player in our industry, who usually stays out of the spot light.

As Jacqueline Medina leaves for work, she wakes her daughter. She has plans tat day too. Her cheerleading squad is meeting at Edna High School for practice, ahead of the Christmas parade planned for the afternoon. Jacqueline Medina arrives at the parade, excited to see her daughter perform, but Lizbeth is not with the rest of the cheerleaders in the parade. Friends confirm they hadn't seen Lizbeth in the parade either. In fact, no-one had heard from Lizbeth Worried, Jacqueline starts calling her daughter's cell phone. The calls go straight to voicemail. Jacqueline Medina heads home, to the apartment the two of them share. When Medina get home, the door is unlocked. Inside.. nothing seems out of place. When Jacqueline goes in the bathroom, she pulls back the shower curtain, finding Lizbeth Medina, unconscious. The search for a suspect begins. The day after Lizbeth Medina's murder, Edna police release surveillance photos of a person and a vehicle of interest. The bearded male in the photo is wearing a black Volcom hooded sweatshirt and he is seen driving a silver Ford Taurus. Two days after the murder of Lizbeth Medina, Edna Police announced an arrest. The suspect is a 23 year old "undocumented" migrant, thought to have been living in the USA for the last 5 years. His name is Rafael Govea Romero. He was captured about 75 miles north of Edna in Schulenburg, Texas, where he reportedly has family. Romero is jailed on suspicion of capital murder. KPRC reports his bond is set at $2 million. Edna Police Chief Rick Boone says items missing from Lizbeth Medina's apartment were found in Romero's possession. Police say Romero confessed to the murder.
