Run Stronger, Not Harder: Simple Strength Training for Women In this week's episode of the Women's Running Collective, Hayles and Jussie chat through their week of training, including some spicy interval sessions like the Mona Fartlek and a pyramid workout as they prep for a fast 5K. They dive into one of the most important (but often overlooked) parts of running: strength training. From building power and preventing injuries to improving running form, the girls break down exactly why lifting matters and how to start. Expect step-by-step guidance on staple moves like squats, lunges, deadlifts, planks, glute bridges, and calf raises, plus practical advice on how to structure reps, sets, and supersets without overcomplicating things. Of course, it wouldn't be a WRC episode without some laughs this time, about running hair care and an unexpectedly iconic Big W post-run robe recommendation. Whether you're new to the gym or looking to level up your strength, this one's all about helping you move better, feel stronger, and run longer.

School secretaries and caretakers in Clare have pledged to remain on strike until the Government meets their demands. Pickets have taken place at the office of the county's Government TDs this morning as those engaging in industrial action continue their pursuit of public service pensions and other entitlements for a fourth day. Having chosen the school gates as the location for their demonstrations since last Thursday, secretaries and caretakers in Clare opted for a different approach this morning. Equipped with placards displaying slogans such as "fair pensions for all school staff" and "pension parity", strikers have taken their grievances directly to the gates of power today by picketing the offices of Clare's Government TDs. After being granted access to Fine Gael Deputy Joe Cooney's office in the Market in Ennis, the secretaries and caretakers present made the Bodyke TD aware of their plight. Secretary at St Senan's National School in Kilrush, Bernie Dillon, says they've been made to feel like "paupers" and that they won't relent until a resolution is found. The key asks of secretaries and caretakers are inclusion in the public service pension scheme, access to sick leave and access to bereavement leave - entitlements enjoyed by other school workers like teachers and SNAs. They're also asking to be paid by the Department of Education rather than by their schools' board of management. Tim Daly, who's the caretaker of the Holy Family National School in Ennis, insists it's an indefinite strike. Deputy Cooney claims he spoke to the Minister for Education Helen McEntee about the issue this morning and that he will continue to engage with her until progress is made. He admits work could've got underway during the summer. Fórsa, which is the trade union that represent school secretaries and caretakers, says "there is no WRC process, no talks, and no effort on the Government side to resolve the situation" at present. It says its members won't come off strike until negotiations resume. Clarecastle Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O'Callaghan believes the industrial action must continue if parity is to be achieved.

Since January, the United States' migrant detention and deportation system, which was already troubled, has become increasingly opaque. Access to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities is restricted, internal oversight agencies have been hollowed out, and credible information about conditions inside is scarce. Yet reports that have emerged, some from those who have recently been deported, tell a troubling story echoing the darkest moments of recent U.S. immigration history. In late July and early August, researchers from WOLA and the Women's Refugee Commission (WRC) set out to pierce this “black box” by visiting cities in Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico that are key deportation hubs. There, they interviewed deported migrants, service providers, advocates, experts, and government officials to learn what they are hearing about conditions in U.S. detention. The findings are disturbing. They point to a resurgence of family separations, cruel treatment, miserable, unhealthy conditions, and deportation processes that violate migrants' rights and dignity. With transparency mechanisms dismantled, these abuses are happening out of public view. In this episode, host Adam Isacson talks with two colleagues from WRC with whom he traveled: Zain Lakhani, WRC's director of Migrant Rights and Justice. Diana Flórez, a consultant to WRC, an attorney and expert on gender, transitional justice, development, and peacebuilding. During their travels, Isacson, Lakhani, and Flórez shared photos and initial findings in four “dispatches” published to our organizations' websites, from Honduras, Guatemala, Tapachula, and Ciudad Juárez. We heard consistent accounts of: Family separations: A larger number than expected of parents deported without U.S. citizen children, often without being given the choice of being removed with them. The crisis is approaching the scale of the “zero tolerance” family separations that shocked the nation in 2018. Inhumane conditions: Overcrowded cells, lack of medical care, and verbal and physical abuse by guards. Threats to the health of pregnant and lactating women and their children: Insufficient and poor-quality food, difficulty in obtaining medical attention, and even being forced to sleep on floors. (The podcast refers to a July 30 report on abuse in detention, especially of pregnant women and children, by the office of Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Georgia).) Targeting of vulnerable populations: Harassment of LGBTQ+ individuals, especially trans individuals who are now detained with the gender to which they were assigned at birth. As Lakhani notes, “Historically… we were able to enter detention centers and visit them and speak with migrants,” but “now we're seeing the deliberate creation of a black box.” We hope that the WOLA–WRC delegation's findings will guide future, more intensive on-the-ground research enabling advocates to refer egregious abuses requiring legal action, build a rigorous archive of known cases, and inform public opinion and policymakers.

Former MLB Pitcher Josh Towers and Scott Seidenberg recap the MLB trade deadline, talk about the biggest moves and play a game of Bet or Pass on MLB Futures. ⚾ Marlins' dominance: 30–14 since June 13, top-3 ERA, and elite FIP rankings.
MLB writer Travis Sawchik from Driveline Baseball joined the show. Rafael Flores is ranked below Nick Yorke in the Pirates top 30 prospects. Sawchik says the Pirates went against the league consensus with the return in the Bednar trade. He also says that Fangraphs projects that Flores would have an 86 WRC+ if he came up today, which is a problem because he might not be a catcher. Travis says he can't believe Bailey Falter would be a non-tender candidate.
Ben Cherington believes that he put the Pirates in a stronger position going into next year. Yahoo Sports gave the Pirates an F+ for the trade deadline. Mullsy dropped the Pirates deadline grade to an F. Poni thinks the Ke'Bryan Hayes trade was the Pirates only good decision. He gives it a B+. Tommy Pham has been one of the best hitters in baseball the last couple of months, and the Pirates somehow didn't trade him. An insider says he is done with the Pirates because they care more about finances than winning. MLB writer Travis Sawchik from Driveline Baseball joined the show. He also says that if he were to get traded it would take two first rounders and a $45 million deal. Mike says that Parsons lost all of his leverage because he actually showed up. Mike thinks that Buffalo makes the most sense to send a deal for Parsons. He thinks that the Terry Mclaurin trade request is just an effort to get the Commanders to pay him. Florio says that people should be skeptical of anything ESPN reports about the NFL as a whole.
Former MLB Pitcher Josh Towers and Scott Seidenberg talk about the latest news around Major League Baseball and take a look at the market for the Most Wins in July. The Inside Pitch w/ Josh Towers Ep. 13, recorded June 30, features Scott Seidenberg and former MLB pitcher Josh Towers discussing trends across Major League Baseball as July approaches. The episode begins with a startling stat: 61 games have been decided by 10 or more runs before July, the most since 2004. These blowouts impact betting lines through recency bias, but the hosts argue savvy bettors can exploit this. For example, after the Cubs' 12–3 win over Houston, the line moved in favor of the Astros, who bounced back the next day with a 3–0 win behind Framber Valdez. Towers emphasized players mentally reset after blowouts and that those games often preserve top relievers for the next matchup, giving smart teams like Houston an edge. The Mets were highlighted as a struggling team despite early-season promise. They were swept in Pittsburgh and outscored 30–4. A recent players-only meeting didn't help, and June stats reveal deep issues: a 109 WRC+ (9th best) but a 4.80 ERA (5th worst). Pete Alonso dropped from the .360s to .291, and the lineup outside him is below .260. Senga's injury was flagged as a possible turning point. Towers also pointed out that pitchers like Blackburn and Montas returned from injury without sufficient rehab buildup. Montas had six rehab starts totaling just 18 innings and struggled in his second MLB outing. This points to systemic issues with pitcher preparation. The conversation shifted to elite pitching. Tarik Skubal leads MLB with a 9.86 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 1.98 FIP, making him the AL Cy Young favorite at -190. Garrett Crochet is a close second (+380), with similar innings, strikeouts, and a 2.54 FIP. Josh praised Skubal's ability to pitch downhill and manipulate the strike zone, describing it as a “blueprint” for pitching. He argued that current trends emphasizing vertical pitching miss these fundamentals. Ranger Suarez of the Phillies also drew attention with a 1.19 ERA over his last 10 starts, the best 10-game stretch since Cliff Lee. Phillies had the second-best ERA in June, supporting their rise despite Bryce Harper's injury. Josh stressed the value of quality starts—six innings, three or fewer earned—as essential to team success and underappreciated in today's stat-obsessed game. They examined home ballpark impacts, particularly Globe Life Park in Texas, now MLB's lowest scoring venue. Rangers are 30–12 to the under at home, yet Towers insists this is due to poor offense, not the ballpark. No player has more than nine homers, and he criticized swing mechanics and development. He also highlighted how teams like the Dodgers and Tigers, both 53–32, find success through depth, discipline, and pitching, while teams like the Mets lack cohesion. With July beginning, the hosts reviewed betting odds for most wins. Astros are the favorite at +450, but their schedule includes Colorado, Dodgers, and Cleveland, leading both analysts to question the pick. The Dodgers (+500) and Tigers (+750) are favored due to consistent performance and better matchups. The Cubs dropped from 20:1 to 9:1 after a large bet, but neither host found value there. Phillies and Rays have potential, though travel-heavy schedules are a concern. Lastly, they emphasized evaluating teams based on matchups rather than records alone, citing San Diego's poor performance against winning teams (15–28). The episode ends with a preview of their upcoming midseason awards show and a pregame.com promo code (BAT15) for $15 off. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
