He has been teaching at Brookfield High School for the last 14 of those. Mike attended UW Madison where he received his degree in Secondary Education in Broadfield Science and Biology with additional certifications in chemistry and physics. In his time at Brookfield Central, Mike has taught Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and General Science. He is currently teaching Physics and AP Physics. His interests in education focus on putting students at the center of their own learning experience. He lives in Brown Deer, WI with his wife. Google Certifications: Google Certified Educator Level 1, Google Certified Educator Level 2 Google “Spark”: When I first learned of Google Docs and Google Drive it was amazing that student documents could be accessed across multiple devices without the need for a floppy disk or thumb drive to bring to the computer lab. This was especially key when I got a class set of iPads. This may have been the gateway, but it was still just word processing.  The major sparks were realizing the options for varied expression, ability to use Doctopus to distribute templates to the learner and provide digital feedback via comments. Now that my school is 1:1, I have my students do warm-ups in an interactive journal using Google Slides. It used to take me forever to grade their paper journals and I always dreaded it...until this year. I now collect the online "journals" once a quarter and I use the Doctopus add-on with a Goobric to grade them. This has saved me a lot of time AND increased how much feedback I'm able to give them. Win win! Also, I've used their bell-ringer/warm-up journals to review vocabulary words. I randomly assigned students a vocabulary word and asked them to find an image that show the words meaning. Next, students put their slides in presentation mode, then do a gallery walk. As they view each other's work, they write down the vocabulary word they think is being depicted on a sticky note next to each laptop. When students return to their seat, they'll know whether their picture sufficiently showed their assigned word's meaning based on their peer's anonymous feedback. Plus, it gets them up and moving. :) Tyler Osborne from Canada - Quick tips and keyboard shortcuts via Speakpipe Allison Gerken and her students are sharing Booksnaps on Twitter and Seesaw! Google Apps For Education is transforming the educational landscape, nowhere is this more true than in urban school districts. This free and very robust suite of tools allows teachers and administrators to personalize large amounts of data in an efficient manner. My guest, Andrew Stillman, has created many of the free tools that are used in conjunction with Google Apps. Currently his work is focused on improving the handling of vast amounts of data in the urban school setting of New York City with New Visions For Public Schools- a non-profit. Google Apps: New model of computing Helps manage large volumes of school data Fundamentally different in cost structure Ability for students to access school community outside of school "Unfortunately there is a disconnect between what is perceived as a need for innovation in education, and I wouldn't trivialize the substance of what happens in a classroom- the magic of a really skilled pedagog engaging students, but there are much more foundational needs that undermine all those other conversations".- Andrew Stillman Find Add-Ons: There are many very helpful add-ons that can be found at cloudlab.newvisions.org which is the central location for the work that Andrew and the team at New Visions are doing. Some of Andrew's most noted Add-Ons are Doctopus, FormRanger and siteMaestro. He can be found on Google+ (search Andrew Stillman) and on Twitter as @astillman.
