In Episode 3 of our Online Education Training Series, we talk about how to stay in touch with your students. +++ Formative feedback to get a better insight into what is happening in class +++ In your course, you assess the learning of your students - often at the end of the semester or, for example, as a mid-term exam. Students might have to give a presentation or submit other graded assignments. These types of graded assessments that give a summary of what a student has learned are called ‘summative feedback’. A second type of feedback is called ‘formative feedback’ and is usually not graded. Formative feedback serves students and teachers to understand better how the learning – and the teaching! – are going. These can be small quizzes, a Q&A during a class to see whether students are able to summarise a theoretical framework, or the submission of the final essay’s outline. Here are a few examples of formative feedback you can use in an online: 1) Small online quizzes during the class: Online quizzes give you immediate feedback on your teaching: Did my students catch what I just explained? As online quizzes are usually anonymous, students will not be afraid to give the wrong answer. That is a great tool to get feedback from everyone in the class how their learning is going. If half the class gives the wrong answer, maybe you want to spend a bit more time on that topic/concept? Also students will get immediate feedback whether they have understood the content of the class. You can set-up quizzes in many webinar software or you can use tools, such as Socrative (https://socrative.com/) or Kahoot (https://create.kahoot.it/login). 2) One-minute paper at the end of the class, or just before the start of a new class: At the start or end of the class, ask your students to sit down and write a summary answering the following two points. - What was the most important thing you learnt this morning/during the last class? - What was the muddiest (most unclear) concept or idea during this morning’s sessions/during last class? It is good if you share a big clock on the screen. People should be already logged in the Moodle course, so they can upload the assignment there, as soon as the bell rings. This exercise will give you a good and quick insight even in relatively big classes of what information ‘sticks’. You will also identify if there is a recurrent misunderstanding or misconception. In case the class is not too big, you could also ask your students to submit the answers via the tool Mentimeter (https://www.mentimeter.com/) so that you can share all the (anonymous) answers on the big screen. 3) Stop-and-go lecture with peer feedback: This type of feedback is useful for lecture formats. As a teacher you interrupt your lecture every 10 minutes to allow students to discuss in pairs for a few minutes. Student pairs get in touch via video/audio call or in a chat. You need to give a very precise task: ‘Summarise in your own words what was the most important point of this part of the lecture’. Or ‘ Please discuss whether there was anything unclear for one or the other and try to explain to each other’. Students could also use social media tools to get in touch. Set up the pairs before the class and ask students to already get in touch with each other. In case your lecture takes place on Microsoft Teams for example, that would allow students to contact each other within the same platform very easily. But they could also start a private chat within a webinar software. This podcast series is created by Annika Zorn, Director Digital Learning and PhD Programmes at the Hertie School. In this episode, Claire meets with Nathan Ashman, who is a Lead Teacher for New Technologies at St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy in Blackburn. Despite having a secondary background, Nathan was delivering a session aimed at the primary-age range at the Lead Learn Lancs 2019 conference, which was where Claire met with him. Nathan didn’t originally plan to go into teaching (an action hero was his dream occupation as a child!). After studying Theatre, Film and TV at university, and coaching rugby, Nathan discovered he was natural when it came to working with children and so made the decision to go into teaching. His initial plan was to go into primary teaching but his old school offered him a post teaching English and media while he was trained on the job. After completing his employment-based training in Kent in 2005, training in both English and media, Nathan’s career progressed until eventually, he ended up becoming a head of a film and media school in Oldham. Through his teaching of media, Nathan experimented with different ways of using technology effectively in the classroom. He talks with Claire about using technology, specifically iPads, effectively in the classroom to lessen the workload of teachers and improve learning experiences. He talks about technology and the ways it should be embedded into teaching, rather than just being an add-on or a gimmick. By sharing examples of what he has seen to work in his own school, Nathan gives lots of practical advice on how technology can be used by both primary and secondary teachers to not only help promote a healthy LIFE/work balance (by reducing overall workload), but to further enhance and cement learning that is already happening in their classrooms. KEY TAKEAWAYS Bringing familiar technology into the classroom can enhance learning opportunities. Using technology that the children are already familiar with enables teachers to demonstrate how to use this technology in a productive way that improves the quality of learning. Technology can be used to improve assessment. In an ideal lesson, teachers should be able to use iPads to get immediate responses from the children in order to gauge levels of understanding. This can be an effective Assessment for Learning tool. Inductions can help every child and teacher make the most of using technology in the classroom. By training children to use the iPads in a meaningful, productive and safe way, they are then able to utilise the iPads as part of their ‘toolkit’. They can be used to complete whole or part tasks in any lesson. By training teachers to see the opportunities for which iPads can be used, using technology in lessons becomes much less of a token gesture. Nathan stresses the importance to move away from the idea of solely having an ‘iPad-based lesson’ and instead, the use of iPads in class should be a fluid transition where both the child and teacher have a choice in using them in specific scenarios when suitable. Allowing children to be creative using iPads will enable them to demonstrate their understanding. Children often come up with interesting ways of approaching tasks and by allowing children to be creative and giving them the choice to use technology to complete tasks within school, it allows them to demonstrate a much wider skill set that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives. Using iPads for different purposes can improve learning outcomes. iPads are best used in primary schools for creative application of learning, however they can also be used to assign pre-teaching videos to watch or articles to read. They can also be used for assessment purposes although this is much more the case in secondary rather than primary. By using the flip-learning approach of pre-teaching reading/watching, the teacher becomes more of a facilitator in lessons. In terms of assessment, using apps such as Socrative or Answer Garden allows every child who has an iPad to feedback to a given question, which can then be shared with others in the class. This can be used to encourage even with the quieter/less confident children to respond. iPads aren’t the only tablet you can use to enhance learning. A lot of websites are now able to do the same thing as apps can do and so can be accessed from a range of different multimedia devices. Having said this, iPads can be more user-friendly, and they make it easier to collaborate and share work between each other. Rocket Fund can help to launch a fundraising project. iPads and other technologies are an expensive business and in the current educational financial climate, it is not always possible to afford them. Rocket Fund is a crowdfunding platform which supports school staff to create and manage a fundraising campaign for school equipment (link provided below).  Use technology to reduce teachers’ workloads. Technology can be used to mark work by using audio feedback. Teachers can scan a QR code and have the option to record. They can record their voice, pause it and start it again. An example would be to write the points 1, 2, 3 etc in the piece of work being marked and record a voice note for each. The student can hear personalised feedback to them and act upon it straight away by scanning the same QR code. Technology can be approached using small steps for those teachers who are less confident with it. Some teachers find using technology in a classroom setting an obstacle straight away. Even when teachers aren’t confident, it’s important for them to find one thing which they think is a good idea for use in their classroom. They should use this until they are confident and become a master in using that before moving onto the next thing. Use everybody’s skills and strengths. Getting to grips with using technology does take a longer time for some than it does for others. By working collaboratively with their colleagues and drawing on the skills and experience of the different members of the team, teachers can build their confidence levels and new skills can be learned in a supportive way. BEST MOMENTS "There’s no point in using it [technology] if it doesn’t actually improve what you’re doing.”   “Why not give the students that autonomy to choose to do that [use the iPad to create]?” “Students are already making videos at home... if you go into a class full of year 6 students and say to them ‘What do you want to be?’, the most popular job will probably be a Youtuber.” “It’s about giving the kids the opportunity to show their creativity. Having a multimedia device in front of them, which has got a camera, it’s got a voice recorder, you can take a photo, and you can combine all those elements as well in interactive books; why not use that? Why not harness that technology?” “Not only is that making them think about a variety of skills in terms of the metacognition.... but also preparing them for life after work as well.” “Our students don’t have paper planners: they organise all their work on their iPad.” “We compliment traditional learning methods with technology.” “There’s a difference... what you find in secondary schools is that the use of technology is geared around how the students can be independent in their academic studies... in terms of primary schools, it’s more to do with the creative application of their understanding.” “Now yes there is an expense there (iPads). This is great progress as we move towards being able to analyse movements. Next we need to work on being able to describe the different joint movements and muscular contractions.Feedback should focus on 1 thing they can improve next time they do something similareg) net time you critically evaluate a topic make sure you set up clear criteria to use in the evaluationProvide lots of positive feedback (5-1)Feedback must be specific to levels of prios konwledgeIf the topic is new to the student focus on correct and incorrect informationIf they know the content, focus on how they relate the content and the processes that are used in applying, critiquing, and creatingEg when comparing and contrasting try using words such as, “in contrast” or “similarly” and contrast each aspect in its own paragraphIf they are skilled in the topic then feedback should look to help them become more self-sufficient in checking their own workEg have a look at this example and this success/marking criteria and make a list of things you could improve for next time. ORCan you tell the difference between example A and example B. That would be testing just for the sake of testing, which is a massive disservice to our students and will not help them love learning.These tests should be short and fun with the goal of providing you with an insight into what your students do and don't know so that you can differentiate your learning designThis is important BECAUSEIf you don't change your teaching then they are going to either find what you do with them too easy or too hard and both students will not learn how to learn or learn the skills needed to learn on their own.Instead, they will sit at the back of the class and disengage from the lesson, unit or even the subject as a whole.Use the diagnostic resultsIf your diagnostic testing is not used, you are bad a teacher as the person who doesn't give them in the first place.Without some form of diagnostic check on where your students are at, you cannot properly set them challenging, yet achievable learning goals, or design the learning process to achieving those goals.As teachers, we need to know where our students are in order to design the path forward for them to achieve their goals and the learning goals for each subjectI love creating class profiles and including as much information about my students as possible.This includes any diagnostic test results from the learning support unit and results from previous years of testing.I love getting them to create videos about themselves and their goals, as well as what they actually know.Your turnGet some diagnostic evidence relating to what your students already know.Identify where they are at in relation to your learning goals and their's SO that you can adjust your teaching practice to help them achieve the goals.So, if you haven't yet, gather information from your learning support, and NAPLAN testing results to identify your student's skills, BUT also do something that is specific to what you are teaching this term. Matt went for a baby care crash course by looking after his cousin’s son. This conversation regressed or progressed, depends on how you look at it, into a vague discussion on kinship and the significance of cousinhood. We were both confused as to what constitutes a 2nd cousin, there is an answer (5:45). Phil brings us back to the surface with his most recent experiences grading, of course this also quickly digressed into a conversation about grading philosophies and how as graders we should pay close attention to our emotional states. Turns out neither one of us wants to see another multiple choice test in the social sciences. BOOK IT! Our Top Technology Teaching Toolbox Tips (14:37) We wanted to do an episode early on about teaching, but these kinds of conversations can tend to be somewhat all over the place which is why Phil put together this list of teaching tools that he has used in the classroom. Matt had a heady day, so he just sat back, took the notes and asked questions. We started off with a confession: we are both Luddites. Matt connected the Luddites to the invention of the printing press which he connected to the Protestant Reformation. CORRECTION: Turns out the Luddites can be traced to the late 1700-early 1800’s, we placed them a bit early it seems. There are many recommendations in this episode, falling broadly within 5 categories. We finish up the conversation with another confession: WRITING IS HARD! It’s difficult for everyone, even for Stephen King. We also start talking a bit about classroom power dynamics using certain pedagogical techniques such as flipped Learning and the need to be authentic while presenting. In-Class and Conference Presentations: Prezi (21:14): pushing Power-Point to the brink, but with more functionality and ease of use, Prezi makes your classroom and conference presentations visually appealing and easier to make. Prezy saves your presentations to a cloud which means it is always available across multiple platforms. Prezi is free to use and you can seamlessly embed videos and audio. Prezi saves you time when creating a presenting and makes your presentation stand out against other linear styles of presenting information. TED, TEDx, TED Ed (23:00). Quality content that is easily embedded into presentations and allows lecture content to be re-watched and expanded on at after class time ends. Socrative (27:23) is a program that allows you to easily create assessment tools that combines fun games and easy to understand reports to follow students progress. Jeopardy Maker (28:17): Website for making engaging and fun Jeopardy-style quizzes. Matt got a little too jazzed-up over this, Phil said that he incentivizes with candy…even for the losers. The good old chalkboard (31:07): The primary tool of all teachers, for a good reason. We share some tips and experiences about using this underappreciated technology. The Walk, Chalk & Talk is explored here. Collaboration: Dropbox (35:36): Easy to use, even for these Luddites, and Phil likes it because you can easily share and unshare documents and he is not convinced other cloud based services are as easy to use. iScanner (iTunes / GooglePlay) / Scanner Pro (iTunes) (36:59): Matt thinks this will ‘steal your retina’ Phil explains that it is a picture-to-PDF converter that he uses to snap shots of notes, comments and mind maps to then share with students. Really easy to use, helpful for continual feedback and makes collaborating easy when getting together physically is difficult. Skype and GoogleVoice (38:10): Skype is a bit easier for multi-person conversations because of its ease of sharing screen screens, but either are adequate to chat with a student or a collaborator when physically getting together is difficult. Skype and Google offer phone numbers, like those landline number we used to all have. This additional avenue to communicate can only help collaboration (Here’s how to share your screen in Skype). Office Hours (38:28): Whether it’s time one-on-one, or as a small group, office hours are an important part in connecting and collaborating with students. Phil and Matt both tell their students that “I’m your note taker”. This allows students to free up thinking power and when combined with some of the previous technologies, makes collaboration a breeze. Don’t forget your white board and your mobile scanner. Time Management: Toggl (42:50): This is a simple to use time tracker. You press record, define what activity you are doing, it makes easy to understand timesheet reports at the end of the week. It works on phones and a webtop browser, making it easy to use wherever you’re working. Matt likes this idea of pressing a button and locking in, he also offers up his own recommendation: work in 40-45 min intervals, this is the upper limit of human attention span. He says to set an alarm and you will find that if your attentions starts to waver it has probably been 45 mins. This apparently is called the Pomodoro Technique. Phil ponders in his head if this podcast is too long and we are losing people along the way? Let us know. Doodle (46:06): This is a  great meeting tool, easy to use and easy to modify, it replaces the 37 email long chain when trying to organize a meeting with three people, two weeks from now. Citation Management: End Note (46:32): While there are many citation management tools out there, for ease of use Phil recommends End Note. It allows PDF documents to be imported into the tool, allowing you to markup the file with notes. There are many citation management suites out there, find the one that works best with your workflow. Writing: Scrivener (48:18): Get away from using the standard linear text editing software. Phil makes a strong recommendation for adopting Scrivener to prepare lengthy manuscripts. Scrivener brings together all your data, chunks of text, folders and stacks of papers into one place. Scrivenor will become your writing engine. Through the use of binders, Scrivener organizes your writing into sections, and the cork board allows you to take notes on the fly. This allows you to you work with one window open, forcing your attention on what counts in our line of work: writing. There is now a tablet version that easily syncs your documents to a cloud. The tool also has a neat writing counter that tells you how much you need to write each session to meet your target goal. There are many many more features as well, go check it out for a free trial before you commit cash to it. Thanks to Leslie for introducing Phil to this! Evernote (51:20). If Scrivner is the engine, Evernote is your virtual notepad. Keep things written down and easily allows you to declutter your mind. Evernote syncs with so many applications now that it has become the go-to note-taking, list-making, reminder-prodding tool. Obviously, these show notes would have been much better (shorter!) had they been written in Evernote. Powerthesaurus.org (53:17). Easy to use thesaurus resource. It’s crowdsourced, offers several sorting options and at the time of writing this claims to have 19M synonyms. Get inspired. Hardware: MacBook Air / Chromebook (53:47): Phil puts forth a strong argument for using small, portable laptops. This allows you to write anywhere and doesn’t take-up much needed desk real estate. Battery life is generally good on smaller devices and can be easily paired with a more robust Bluetooth or USB keyboard (if you are anything like Phil and have a habit of pounding on the keys as if they are the ones responsible for writer’s block, a Bluetooth or USB keyboard is a wise investment). Matt waxed poetic about his little Netbook (RIP). External hard drives (55:25): Make sure to keep backups -even if you save to a cloud service. Save everything twice, Phil says. Wrapping things up on a broader note, Matt and Phil talk about dismantling power dynamics in the classroom through flipped learning and basically being an empathetic and hopefully, an authentic human being. Last plug: 57 Ways to Screw Up in Grad School, by Kevin D. Haggerty & Aaron Doyle (University of Chicago Press, 2015). Some of the ways folks can screw up are applicable beyond grad school. Even more Recommendations (1:03:37): Matt brought in two by Orwell to talk about: Books v Cigarettes (Penguin) is a collection of articles and essays, including the title essay which is a cost benefit analysis Orwell’s two addictions. The second is Road to Wigan Pier (Penguin), which is an ethnographic account of Lancashire and Yorkshire and its coal industry in the mid 1930’s. The Elias book that Phil talked about (and for which he feels really silly not remembering!): The Established and The Outsiders by Norbert Elias & John L. LifeHacks for Grading: Should you use your built in district grading system or use one of the gradebooks below? EasyGradePro: This gradebook is great if you want lightning fast grade input. CON: You cannot post grades to the internet. Engrade: This gradebook is platform agnostic and all online. You can do a lot with posting student work to the site with TINY URLs. CON: Can be blocked by districts / privacy policies, etc. Thinkwave: I used to use this program when I first started, but I haven’t used it in a while. Quia: A great website for creating student tests and quizzes to give online. LifeHacks for Student Behavior: Danny’s Example of Positive Behavior Support: We really need to try and make good positive behavior supports for our students. Sometimes they really need explicit teaching on what socially appropriate behavior is. Below is an example you can use to give students points when they act the way you want them to act. You can get a response from students instantly from their smartphones or computers. Students can vote on best responses and create quizzes on it for things like an exit ticket. Socrative breaks down your student data in an easy-to-read excel file. Alphasmarts: Another learning response system if your students cannot use smartphones in class.
