Holy Week arrives with profound significance, bridging Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday in a journey that transforms our understanding of divine love and sacrifice. This episode explores the deep meaning behind this sacred time when all elements of Christ's ministry converge toward the ultimate demonstration of God's love for humanity. We reflect on the beautiful lyrics of "In Christ Alone" by Keith Getty and Stuart Townsend, unpacking how this powerful hymn captures the essence of Christ's redemptive work. The song reminds us that our hope, peace, and strength are found in Christ alone—the cornerstone that remains firm through life's fiercest storms and deepest challenges. As we journey through this significant week, we're invited to not only celebrate Christ's victory over death but also to extend His love to others—especially those we find most difficult to love. Take a moment today to reflect on this incredible gift and how it continues to change lives two thousand years later. We would love to hear your comments. Send us a Text MessageSupport the show

Today Daily Devotional

You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other. — Deuteronomy 4:35 I live close to Lake Michigan on the South Haven, Michigan, side. It is my favorite go-to place; sometimes I am drawn to Lake Michigan to experience God's greatness. As I stand on the shore, I sing, “How Great Is Our God,” “How Great Thou Art,” “In Christ Alone,” and “He Is Lord.” These songs are like stories that remind me who God is. As I listen to the sounds of big waves crashing on rocks, seagulls squawking, and wind roaring, I proclaim that the God of wonders is holy. He is the Lord of heaven above and earth below. Gazing at the vastness of the sky and the lake, both perfectly blue, I am awestruck and speechless. It seems as if God's finger has blended the line where the lake meets the sky; it appears seamless. God is present and actively working in our lives. He wants us to know that he is the Lord our God—in the past, present, and future. We praise God for letting us know him through his words, nature, works, and especially through his Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Where or when are you drawn into the awesomeness of God and reminded that the Lord is God and there is no other? O God of wonders, I am in awe of you. I praise you that you are God and there is no other. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Wilderness Wanderings

I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations…You will be a crown of splendor in the Lord's hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God (Isaiah 61:10-62:3). In ancient times, the week prior to a wedding was time for celebration, with the men celebrating in one area and the women in another. On the day of the wedding, the bride was led to her groom's home dressed in a gown he had provided for her. There another round of feasting occurred before the bride and groom went to the wedding chamber. These ancient wedding customs lie behind the verses of our text. Knowing them is helpful for understanding Isaiah, but even more, to understand how this theme plays in the New Testament. In Ephesians 5, Paul writes that the church will appear before Christ “without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless” (5:27). Revelation 19 adds, “For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear. (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints)” (7-8). Both passages are rooted in our text. The wedding of Jesus and his bride, the church, will be the final act of this age. Rooted in Isaiah's imagery, the New Testament makes the point that we are currently in the week of wedding preparation. Two things happen in that week: dressing up and celebration. Earlier, Isaiah wrote that God promises to bestow on the grieving “a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (Isaiah 61:3). Praise and thanksgiving are the natural response to grace that has been received and experienced. Inspired and gifted poets help us to voice this praise. Hymns such as Amazing Grace and In Christ Alone give us words to express our praise for God's grace which we have experienced in Christ. Because we live between the two comings of our Lord, the Christian life is characterized by joy. There are times when it becomes buried under the griefs and hardships of life in this sin-stained world. Yet, it keeps rising again, leaking quietly back into our lives, filling us with thanksgiving and with expectation and hope for what is to come. Celebration marks the Christian life; but also, ‘dressing up.' Notice how Isaiah phrases things, “For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness” (10). Also take in what John sees, “Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear” (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints) (Revelation 19:8). God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves, that is, make us like himself, to behave as he does. To Titus Paul wrote, “Jesus Christ gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good” (2:13-14). Forgiveness of sin is not the end; it is only the means. The end is that we should live out the righteousness of God by faith. We cannot live out this righteousness in our own strength. Only as we believe, that through his Spirit, Jesus is giving us cloths of his own righteousness, do we discover God making us holy. Shall we go to the wedding feast of the Lamb clothed in the rags of our own failures? Surely not! We come to the celebration clothed in a gown of righteous behavior. Jesus has caused this garment to grow through the power of the Holy Spirit. Isaiah invites us to lift our eyes from the horror of our own sin and to see the glory of what Jesus is doing in us. Like the ancients, let's celebrate as we get ready. As you journey on, go with the blessing of God:  “May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he'll do it” (5:23).

Voices In My Head (The Official Podcast of Rick Lee James)

Voices In My Head (the Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 553: Kenny & Claire   Pointing listeners to the Hope of Christ amidst life's troubles, critically acclaimed husband/wife folk duo Kenny & Claire are set to bow their full-length debut, Upon the Storm, July 19. Produced by GRAMMY Award-winner Mitch Dane (Brandon Heath, JJ Heller), the 12-track set showcases four freshly penned originals and eight modern renditions of enduring hymns.    The album's title-cut, a stirring take on William Cowper's 18th century hymn “God Moves in a Mysterious Way,” features updated verses and a new arrangement by Kenny & Claireand Mitch Dane. "God Moves (Upon the Storm)" carries deep meaning for the couple following Kenny's struggle with a brain tumor as well as a life-altering chronic illness diagnosis. Hallmarked by thoughtful, organic arrangements firmly anchored in a folk/Americana soundscape, Upon the Storm also offers Kenny & Claire's signature take on such classic hymns as “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus” and “Come Thou Fount,” among others, along with a uniquely emotive rendition of the popular Keith Getty and Stuart Townend-penned hymn, “In Christ Alone.” New selections including “Surely His Goodness,” “Have Mercy on Us” and “We Believe”—all written by Kenny & Claire and Mitch Dane—bridge the past and present with thematic consistency.    ABOUT KENNY & CLAIRE Beginning their musical journey together in 2005—writing songs, performing and leading worship throughout the Carolinas—Kenny & Claire Hilliard were married in 2008 but paused their creative pursuits while Kenny attended seminary and the couple started a family. In 2015, during Kenny's tenure as a senior pastor and worship leader in Asheville, North Carolina, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Shortly after successful surgery to remove the tumor, Kenny received a second diagnosis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome—a degenerative genetic disease that left him temporarily impaired. The couple embraced a return to music during Kenny's recovery, founding a music teaching studio and further honing their songwriting craft by penning modern hymns for their home congregation.      Known for their emotive acoustic/folk originals and organic revivals of theologically rich hymns of yesteryear, Kenny & Claire's critically acclaimed debut EP, Are You Weary, released in 2021. In addition to participating in Getty Music's prestigious International Hymn Writing Collective, the couple's music has been highlighted by Under The Radar (UTR) and in The Rabbit Room's New Music Roundup, and Claire was also named among “Ones to Watch” by the Nashville Songwriters Association (NSAI) in 2021. QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “There are a lot of people who struggle mightily with this whole idea. They say, ‘If God is a God of love, he doesn't send people to hell. If God is a God of judgment, he can't be a God of love. I can't reconcile the two things.' Yet the Bible insists that not only is God a God both of love and wrath—not only do those two things not conflict with each other, but they actually establish each other. One without the other is nonsense. One without the other is meaningless. If you actually try to somehow extract, remove surgically, excise the Christian message of the wrath and judgment of God, what you actually have is nothing left at all.”~Tim Keller, Pastor & Author “If we do not protect God's wrath, we lose the bad news, and if we lose the bad news, we lose the good news — we lose the gospel.”~Tony Reinke, Senior Writer at DesiringGod.org “God's wrath is more horrifying than we can ever imagine, but he will pardon any who take refuge in the shelter Jesus provides.”~John Piper, Pastor & Author “'Til on that cross as Jesus diedThe wrath of God was satisfiedFor every sin on Him was laidHere in the death of Christ I live.”~“In Christ Alone” by Keith & Kristyn GettySERMON PASSAGEPsalm 7 (ESV)1 O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge;   save me from all my pursuers and deliver me,2 lest like a lion they tear my soul apart,   rending it in pieces, with none to deliver. 3 O Lord my God, if I have done this,   if there is wrong in my hands,4 if I have repaid my friend with evil   or plundered my enemy without cause,5 let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it,   and let him trample my life to the ground   and lay my glory in the dust. Selah 6 Arise, O Lord, in your anger;   lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies;   awake for me; you have appointed a judgment.7 Let the assembly of the peoples  be gathered about you;   over it return on high. 8 The Lord judges the peoples;   judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness   and according to the integrity that is in me.9 Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,and may you establish the righteous—   you who test the minds and hearts,   O righteous God!10 My shield is with God,  who saves the upright in heart.11 God is a righteous judge,  and a God who feels indignation every day. 12 If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword;  he has bent and readied his bow;13 he has prepared for him his deadly weapons,  making his arrows fiery shafts.14 Behold, the wicked man conceives evil  and is pregnant with mischief  and gives birth to lies.15 He makes a pit, digging it out,  and falls into the hole that he has made.16 His mischief returns upon his own head,  and on his own skull his violence descends. 17 I will give to the Lord the thanks  due to his righteousness,  and I will sing praise to the name  of the Lord, the Most High.

Preacher: Josh Hennessey Music: Josh Hennessey & John Hudson Today we start a new mini-series on Paul's letter to the Galatians, led by Josh Hennessey and Tibor Timbos. Josh leads us through the first chapter of this letter, expressing what the true gospel is. This is important because even now, some odd 2,000 years after Jesus's death and resurrection, we have churches teaching a gospel different to the one Jesus and Paul taught - and that gospel message is simply that it is by Grace Alone, Faith Alone, In Christ Alone that we are saved. Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make all of life all about Jesus.

All action has some purpose. The preaching/proclaiming of the gospel is action. Therefore preaching/proclaiming the gospel must have purpose. But let's pause and consider what has purpose in this statement: "preach the gospel". Is it the act of preaching that has purpose? Is it the gospel that has purpose? Preaching as an action can have any number of subjects to proclaim. Marketing executives can preach the value of a product or service. A politician can preach a political agenda. An evangelist preaches the gospel. Matthew closes his gospel with what the church now calls The Great Commission. It is a lesson from Jesus to HIS disciples to make disciples, baptizing them, teaching them. This passage has been affectionately dubbed, "The railroad terminal through which all of Matthew runs." This is not a lesson in individualism. This is a lesson in dependent unity. Jesus speaks to 'them' and commands 'them' to make disciples of 'them' by baptizing 'them' and teaching 'them'. The only sense of singularity here is in the assurance that Jesus is with 'them'. "I AM with you always". This is a lesson in discipleship in that HIS church will not be alone in this commission. It is a lesson for the faithful now to trust in Christ as we proclaim the gospel, HE makes disciples. It is a lesson clearly intended to encourage and affirm that though we doubt and fear this commission, we are not alone. Christ is with us even as we stand in fear and joy of this great calling to make disciples. In Christ Alone we do this. In Christ Alone we can.

Smith continues to live out his dream; he releases new music regularly and performs around the world to sold-out crowds of loyal and inspired fans. During Michael's storied career, he's not only been honored with three Grammy Awards, 45 Dove Awards, an American Music Award and has sold more than 15 million albums, he's also given back to the global community. Michael has raised funds to battle AIDS in Africa alongside longtime friend Bono, started Rocketown, a safe haven for young people in Tennessee to meet and find hope, and has helped more than 70,000 children's lives through Compassion International. The five-song worship EP features four classics including “In Christ Alone” and “Agnus Dei”  and also features a brand new song, “Crimson Dust”, which Smith wrote alongside Tony Wood.   On the new song, Smith says, “Crimson Dust, which I wrote with Tony Wood, sets the scene of the day of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. My prayer is that it reminds us how heaven touched earth and changed history that day. I love the thought of people around the world singing together ‘Holy, Holy, Holy, Jesus Lamb of God.'”   The first four tracks were captured live with the Nashville Recording Orchestra and a choir at the beautiful Fisher Center at Belmont University.
