So, when the colleges came running, he accepted a full ride to the University of Arkansas. Despite being unable to read or write, he went on to be one of the most prolific players to grace the Razorbacks' campus. In 1974, Tolson was the first basketball player to be drafted by both the NBA and the ABA, having been selected by the Seattle Supersonics and the New York Nets, respectively, ultimately playing for the legendary Bill Russell in Seattle. Following his basketball career, Tolson made the courageous decision to re-enroll at the University of Arkansas, and repeated all four years, this time legitimately. At the age of fifty-two, he returned to the university for three more years, earning a master's degree and graduated magna cum laude. Tolson's gripping story from his childhood in an orphanage to his academic achievements is not only an indictment of a system that would just “pass you along” from grade to grade as a hot basketball prospect without any educational accountability, but also an inspiring story of overcoming great odds to find success.Links of Interest Book: Power Forward Website: https://www.deantolson.com. In today's episode of My Disney Class Podcast, Ryan and Howie welcome back to the show Jeff Bradbury. Jeff Bradbury is an ISTE Award Winning (2021) and globally-recognized educator, educational broadcaster, public speaker, and entrepreneur whose powerful message has inspired thousands of educators through the TeacherCast Educational Network. Jeff Bradbury is a Technology Integration Specialist and the creator of the TeacherCast Educational Network. Jeff currently works in Norwalk Public Schools where he created and teaches a Broadcast Journalism and Technology curriculum that introduces students to marketing, app development, podcasting, and live broadcasting at West Rocks Middle School. On this episode though, Jeff isn't here to just talk educational technology or even about his wonderful Teachercast Network. Instead Jeff is here to talk to us about the DAS program that he recently used on his family trip to WDW. The DAS program is designed for people that have a disability to ensure they have an equal opportunity to enjoy the parks just as much as someone without a disability can. Even though most of this episode is about DAS and Jeff's family trip, we are educators, and we couldn't resist the opportunity to talk a little educational shop with this incredible educator. So we ask Jeff to catch us up on what he's been up to in his educational life and we also talk a little innovation with him as well. We hope you enjoyed catching up with Jeff as much as we did. If you would like to connect with Jeff, check out the link to his website in the show notes below. Also if you haven't already, remember to join the fun and supportive community we have in our Facebook group, Educators who love Disney, and don't forget to rate and review our podcast on Apple music. This week's question is: What do you think district and building leaders should be watching for in tech in the upcoming school year? How should leaders address professional development this year in regards to technology integration? Weekly Topic Why is it important to work with your administrator, especially at the beginning of the school year? Coaches are put in school buildings to support teachers in meeting both district and building goals. They are not “spies for the administration” rather they are “certified support professionals” and “content specialists” designed to help classroom teachers develop and deliver dynamic curricular activities to help students meet their standards. How should you approach your principal at the beginning of the school year? Set up a time to meet before the school year starts. Have a meeting set at least twice a month if not weekly to keep in touch of what is happening in the classrooms. When should you approach your principal at the beginning of the school year? Often After the first few days have passed Before the first major staff meeting to set up an opportunity to work with teachers Should building leaders be focused on “Tech”? No – Building leaders should be focused on standards and how students are meting them. Building leaders should be focused on how their students are meeting the standards and how teachers are creating lessons to meet those standards THROUGH the use of digital learning activities. The “Tech” is simply a vehicle for meeting the standards. What is the purpose of Instructional Coaches doing Professional Development? Professional Development should be designed to setup a way to demonstrate how teachers can meet the needs of the principal. Large Group PD should be designed to then lead into discussions and be agenda items in department & grade level PD which then needs to be designed to lead to 1:1 Coaching sessions in classrooms. [convertkit form=3439843] Question of the Week Our favorite part of recording a live podcast each week is participating in the great conversations that happen on our live chat, on social media, and in our comments section. This week's question is: How can I improve my Coaching Program and be more successful this year? 10 Key Areas That May Be Holding Your Instructional Coaching Program Back. Your coaches are focusing on every teacher in the building equally vs having a grade level or subject area to focus on. It's ok to be supporting an entire building. Come up with a goal between the coach and administration and the teachers so that everyone is on the same page and the teachers know that they are the focus on the coaches attention. You don't have a common vision from your administration on what the coaching program should look like. If your coach is the one to introduce the concept of coaching or a coaching cycle … it will be an uphill school year. The principal must be the one to set the stage for your coaches so that your teachers know that your program is not an optional program. The principal must be setting goals for their teachers that will allow the coach to become the “answer” for the teachers in getting support in meeting those building goals. The coach can then set up their welcome message and coaching menu to help teachers meet the needs of building and district goals. Your coaching website and newsletter are not designed for maximum Return On Investment and your teachers are not motivated to read them or visit the website for help and support.
