In Episode 426 of the Immigration Lawyers Toolbox® Podcast, host John Q. Khosravi, Esq. interviews Mimi Alcocer, a Texas immigration and criminal defense attorney with years of experience at the crossroads of crimmigration. Mimi discusses her journey from Catholic Charities to launching her own solo practice, her work with public defenders across Texas, and the practical and constitutional impact of the Laken Riley Act (LRA) on immigrant defendants. Together, John and Mimi explore how recent laws and political shifts have made the landscape tougher for practitioners and clients — and why protecting due process matters for everyone.

This week's blogpost - https://bahnsen.co/47RDUcM Understanding Inflation: Beyond the Basics In this episode of the Thoughts and Money Podcast, hosts Trevor Cummings and Blaine Carver delve into inflation, likening its effects to a treadmill, which constantly erodes purchasing power. Blaine shares insights from his recent Kansas City trip, using airport travelators as an analogy for inflation's constant presence. The discussion includes how inflation impacts investments, the importance of understanding real returns versus nominal returns, and effective strategies to combat inflation within portfolios. Trevor and Blaine also address common misconceptions about inflation, inflation's nuanced effects on everyday life, and the significance of expense-based planning. Notably, they emphasize the critical need for an investment strategy that can withstand inflation's long-term effects, drawing parallels to historical data showing stocks as an effective hedge against inflation. Dave Zahl writes, “The very notion of a weekly Sabbath breaks the twenty-four-seven cycle of more and reminds us that we are God's treasured children, not slaves to the ever-mounting demands of the pharaohs in our lives.” To anyone who feels like they can't keep up, slowing down is a relief. Notably, according to Genesis, to be made in God's image is to be a person who needs rest. And, according to Exodus, lest we forget the gift that is rest, we're literally commanded to do it. In fact, the command to sabbath receives more detail and explanation than any other commandment except for idolatry. Rest is all over the Old Testament from psalms that describe the comfort of laying down at night, to prophets who find relief under the shade of trees, to further commandments about letting the land rest. And then Jesus takes it to a whole new level because he talks the talk and walks the walk. Have you ever noticed how tired Jesus gets in the gospels? He rests at the well, he rests from casting out demons, he rests after a long night of prayer, and, most notably, he rests the belly of a boat during a storm...

We’re told that chasing more will finally make us feel full. But what if it’s actually what’s draining us? This Sunday, we’ll explore a story Jesus told about a man who had everything—yet died empty. And we’ll contrast it with the life of one of history’s wealthiest figures, who discovered something far better by taking a very different path. Don’t miss this timely message about success, satisfaction, and what truly fills us.

We're back with our first keeping up after summer break! We decided to take some time and chat all about our family work retreat. We took all of our kids and stepped away as a family to spend time together as well as get some much-needed clarity for the businesses that we run together as siblings. This week definitely taught us a lot about the importance of taking a step back to come back to an issue stronger and ready to go. We hope this episode inspires you to take some time to refocus in whatever way that means for you! A couple of weeks ago, Alyssa and Ben had a conversation about the challenges of creativity in times like we're living in. Since t's the last week of our summer vacation, we thought we'd take a little break from the full-on politics and social issues of the show and take a look back at some of the great creatives we've had join us over the years. Guests include Misha Collins, Amitav Ghosh, Heather Matarazzo, and Kim Raver.
