From the death of underworld matriarch Kath Pettingill to the tragic killing of Sunshine shopkeeper Van Viet Truong, Melbourne’s crime headlines have felt non-stop lately. At the same time, fire-bombings linked to illegal tobacco are allegedly spilling over into Melbourne’s bars and nightlife. But are these just isolated headlines, or is the face of crime in our city fundamentally changing? ABC Crime Reporter Olivia Jenkins joins us now to make sense of it all. Welcome to Saturday Magazine, Olivia Two men have been charged and one arrested after a joint agency investigation into the alleged movement of millions of dollars in cash from Tasmania to Victoria, suspected to be the proceeds of crime from the sale of illicit tobacco. The action was the result of a long-term Tasmania Joint Organised Crime Taskforce (TAS JOCTF) investigation into illicit tobacco in Tasmania. A 33-year-old from Hoppers Crossing, Victoria, and a 22-year-old from Sorell, Tasmania, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on 12 August, 2026. Both were charged with knowingly dealing proceeds of crime and recklessly dealing proceeds of crime. They face a maximum sentence of 25 years’ imprisonment if convicted. It is alleged they facilitated the movement of criminal proceeds in cash from Tasmania and Victoria using hire cars and a commercial passenger and freight vessel. Both were bailed to reappear at the court on 2 December, 2026. During the search warrants, officers seized more than $2.5 million worth of tobacco product, more than $1 million in cash, 9kg of silver bars (worth more than $30,000) and one ounce of gold (worth more than $4000). Police also seized five imitation firearms, including a gel blaster firearm, three registered firearms, a .22 rifle and ammunition, a cash-counting machine and mobile devices. The Sunshine Tragedy: Shopkeeper Van Viet Truong (60) died after allegedly intervening in a youth theft outside his grocery store. Five teenagers were charged (a 15-yo with manslaughter has been remanded in custody; others granted bail). Kath Pettingill’s Death (Age 91): Matriarch of the infamous family tied to the 1988 Walsh St police killings. Serves as the historical marker for Melbourne’s “old” underworld—identifiable family hierarchies now replaced by untraceable digital networks. Dating App Arrests: Five teenagers, aged between 16 and 18, have been arrested this week after allegedly using dating apps to lure men before assaulting and robbing them. To date, 47 similar arrests have been made across the state. Police say they have seen similar incidents occur right across the state, “particularly in local government areas taking in Manningham, Casey, Hume, Moorabbin and Knox”. Olivia Jenkins is the ABC’s crime reporter in Melbourne. She is the winner of a Young Walkley for public service journalism and has been the Melbourne Press Club’s young journalist of the year. First up, the Nerds catch up with Rene and get his fresh take on Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Then, the crew dives into the release of Star Wars Visions Presents: The Ninth Jedi to share their initial thoughts. While most of the gang is enjoying it so far, one Nerd might be a bit too critical—so, is it actually worth the watch? That sparks a bigger debate: are we slipping back into Star Wars fatigue, or is there still incredible content on the horizon like Star Wars: Maul Shadow Lord keeping the hype alive? From there, with so much TV to catch up on, the Nerds try to convince Rene to finally check out Spider-Noir (can you believe he hasn't seen it yet?!). Naturally, that leads into a massive tangent about Nicolas Cage and his iconic filmography as the gang breaks down their personal favorites. Finally, a walk down classic cinema leads into a discussion on essential war movies and which ones they would recommend watching first—all this and more!

"Don't worry about it. It's all gonna work out. Everything is figure-outable." —Lisa Cruz Most people don't need more money to invest in their business — they need to stop seeing that investment as a cost. That's the mindset shift former ER nurse turned auto shop co-owner Lisa Cruz brings to this episode of the Daniel Gomez Inspires Show. Lisa spent 25 years as a registered nurse before walking away to help run her husband Ricky's auto repair business — which, at the time, was operating out of shoeboxes with no bookkeeping, no filed taxes, and no system. She explains exactly how she brought structure to that chaos, why a $400 Chamber of Commerce membership terrified Ricky but changed their business, and how a $1,000 marketing spend turned into a $5,000 job. Along the way, she opens up about forgiving her son's father, letting go of resentment toward her own parents, and the surprising story of how their shop grew from a single cow-pasture location to a second site that sees 30,000 cars drive by every day. This episode is for any entrepreneur who feels stuck between wanting to grow and being afraid to spend — and for anyone still carrying resentment that's quietly holding their life or business back. Key takeaways: Ricky refused to buy clipboards for tracking repair orders, so Lisa bought them herself with her own money — a small decision that became the foundation of their record-keeping system. A $400 investment in a Chamber of Commerce membership generated years of revenue that far outweighed the initial fear of spending it. A $1,000 marketing investment returned a $5,000 job, proving that treating spending as an investment — not a cost — changes what a business can become. Lisa's father used to tell her she had a way of stepping into trouble and coming out "smelling like roses" — a mindset she now credits for staying calm through business setbacks. Forgiving her son's absent father and letting go of childhood resentment toward her parents freed up energy she had been spending on bitterness instead of growth. A change in Texas inspection law cut a nearby shop's revenue in half overnight — Lisa and Ricky bought that "dying" business anyway and turned it into a second location on a road with 30,000 daily cars. Listen to the full conversation for the story behind Lisa's book, Keeping Up with the Cruzes, and how she turned a decade of unfiled taxes into a thriving two-location business. That means real updates on Fallout 5, the long-rumored Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters, and where production currently stands with The Elder Scrolls VI. PFAS regulation now has more moving parts, deadlines, and compliance pathways than ever, but the bottom-line advice for water utilities is simple: keep moving. In this episode, Amanda Canida of Black & Veatch explains how utilities can navigate the regulatory complexity while advancing the treatment projects needed to meet federal drinking water standards.Federal monitoring data indicates that roughly 10 percent of public water systems could be affected by the four-parts-per-trillion limits for PFOA and PFOS. Utilities can pursue cleaner water sources or blend supplies, but many are preparing to install treatment at a central plant or directly at an individual well.EPA has proposed retaining the PFOA and PFOS limits while restarting the regulatory process for several other PFAS compounds and creating a streamlined exemption pathway for systems that need more time. Once that exemption rule is finalized, utilities would have 180 days to apply and may need interim measures such as temporary treatment, alternate water supplies, source-control planning, or public education. The challenge is increasingly financial, as construction costs have risen and demand has grown for the equipment and treatment media needed to remove PFAS. Utilities are already slowing other capital projects, shifting money between priorities, and setting aside contingency funds to cover emerging treatment needs.Canida outlines how desktop evaluations and laboratory testing can help systems compare granular activated carbon and ion exchange before committing to longer pilot studies. Utilities must also calculate when treatment needs to be operating—not merely completed—to keep their annual PFAS averages below the federal limit by April 2029.The path forward is to pursue funding now, prepare customers for difficult decisions, and design treatment systems that can adapt as regulators address more of the thousands of PFAS compounds under review.Learn more about PFAS from Black & Veatch.waterloop is a nonprofit news outlet exploring solutions for water sustainability.
The moment you open your doors, you take on risk. Most business owners put basic coverage in place when they started the company and haven't given it a real look since. Meanwhile the business has grown, the exposures have changed, and the broker who sold the policy only calls at renewal. In this episode of Your Wealth and Beyond, Andrew Rafal and Brian Hartstein continue the Four Corners of Business Owner Planning series with the Risk Management Corner. They cover property and casualty coverage, cybersecurity, workers' comp, business interruption, and the quiet items like the 401(k) plan bond that someone on your team should be watching. Like the CPA and the attorney, insurance brokers are event-driven. This conversation is about who fills the monitoring role, what questions to bring to your broker, and how to make sure your coverage fits the business you run today rather than the one you started. In this podcast interview, you'll learn: Why coverage needs shift as a business moves from startup to growth to established, and why the package you bought at formation may not fit anymore. Why a lighting company and a financial firm have completely different cybersecurity and business interruption priorities. How to think about the choice between a large national brokerage and a boutique specialty firm. Why renewal quotes are usually similar across brokers, and why service is the real differentiator. How to approach the decision between filing a claim and handling a small loss inside the business. Why deductible levels should be a strategic decision rather than a default setting. How workers' comp modification factors work and why an inaccurate rating can cost a business for years. The 401(k) ERISA bond gap that shows up as plans grow, and who should be monitoring it. This week on Keeping Up With The Nerds, we are breaking down a mixed-bag comic book adaptation before diving headfirst into the future of the Grand Line. First up, we're taking a look at Supergirl. The internet has had plenty to say, but we're stepping in to ask: is it really that bad? We discuss why it actually functions as a perfectly okay film for the building blocks of the DCU, and why the fanboy internet outrage might be overdoing it just a little bit this time around. Then, the hype is real! Netflix dropped the official trailer and announcement for their highly anticipated One Piece anime reboot. Given how absolutely incredible their live-action adaptation turned out, the crew is equally ecstatic to see what they do with this fresh animated retelling. We dissect the art style, the pacing expectations, and why East Blue is about to look better than ever. In this Issue:
Tommy and Ben talk through a week that includes US and Iranian airstrikes, a peace agreement, a Supreme Court double-header, and the French debate about air conditioning.First up, Israel and Lebanon have signed a 14-point peace agreement in Washington, but people on both sides question whether the deal will ever be implemented, and some in Lebanon fear that it could actually be a recipe for civil war. Meanwhile, the US ceasefire with Iran has produced a week of airstrikes and fighting over what was actually agreed to. Then a brazen new example of corruption combines a mining deal with Kazakhstan, the sons of both President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and $1.6 billion in federal funding. Then the guys dig into how Supreme Court rulings on the preservation of birthright citizenship and the gutting of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Syrians will impact American foreign policy. They also cover the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela and the impact on the interim government, the debate within France over air conditioning while Europe bakes under a historic heat wave, and the most devastating World Cup losses so far this tournament. Then Tommy speaks to New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof about Elon Musk's brazen lie that “nobody died” as the result of Musk and DOGE “feeding USAID into the wood chipper.”For Friends of the Pod, the boys answer listener questions about how live audiences influence political speeches. They also recount some of their tougher culinary experiences while on diplomatic clock.Buy Ben's book All We Say: The Battle for American Identity: A History in 15 Speeches and subscribe to his Substack here.
