In part 2 of our collaboration, Zofia guest-hosts the Visualising War and Peace Podcast to interview project founder, Dr. Alice König. In this conversation, Alice she unveils the groundbreaking Ancient Peace Studies Network—the first of its kind dedicated to examining how peace was understood, experienced, and represented across different ancient cultures.Discover why peace narratives have received far less scholarly attention than war stories, and how Dr. König's team is working to change that by investigating whose voices and experiences are reflected in ancient accounts of peace and reconciliation. What can ancient approaches to conflict resolution teach us about modern peacebuilding? In this thought-provoking special episode, we explore how elite-centered peace narratives shaped societal attitudes in antiquity and continue to influence our understanding of peace today. Dr. König reveals how her interdisciplinary network is "reading against the grain" of ancient sources to uncover ordinary people's lived experiences of peace—voices that have been historically marginalized but might offer valuable insights for contemporary peace literacy.Don't miss our conversation about bridging academic research with creative outreach, as Dr. König shares details about the network's collaboration with a professional theater company, NMT Automatics, and the upcoming multi-authored publication, "New Visions of Ancient Peace." This episode offers a perfect blend of historical scholarship and practical application, demonstrating how ancient wisdom might help us visualize and build more effective paths to peace in our modern world. We hope you enjoy this collab episode! If you would like to get in touch with Alice regarding her work, please visit the University of St Andrews' Visualising War website and the Visualising Peace Project. The music for the episode was composed by Jonathan Young, and Zofia Guertin mixed the episode. To get in touch and find out more about Two Friends Talk History:Find us on Instagram & TwitterSupport us through PatreonBuy our merch on RedbubbleExplore more resources and topics about the ancient world on ArchaeoArtistIllustration by Zofia GuertinIf you'd like to get in touch, email at twofriendstalkhistory@gmail.com.

In this special episode, Will sheds light on the upheaval in the wilderness therapy landscape, particularly spotlighting the closure of Embark Behavioral Health's New Visions Wilderness Therapy programs. This narrative delves into the broader implications of private equity's role in the mental health care industry, with a focus on how these financial underpinnings have influenced the recent pivot away from wilderness therapy models, especially in the context of adolescent treatment. The episode underscores the closure of not just New Visions in Wisconsin and Deschutes Wilderness Therapy but notes a startling trend: the total cessation of ten adolescent wilderness therapy programs in the past year alone, signaling a seismic shift in the field. In discussing New Visions Wilderness Therapy, the episode shares a brief history of the program and spotlights the utilization of trauma-informed care as a factor in its growth and success. The incorporation of trauma-informed practices into their treatment model did play a role in differentiating New Visions in a growing behavioral healthcare marketplace, aiding in its expansion and the subsequent interest from larger, investment-driven entities. This examination underscores the complexity of the adolescent wilderness therapy field, where clinical innovation intersects with business interests, leading to significant changes in the availability and approach to adolescent mental health care. This episode navigates through the nuances of these closures and the broader implications for the changing wilderness therapy landscape, offering a dive into the intersection of financial decisions, clinical practices, and the changing dynamics of adolescent mental health treatment. As the wilderness therapy sector faces this pivotal juncture, White's analysis provides essential insights for professionals, families, and stakeholders, charting the ongoing evolution of treatment modalities in the face of economic and clinical challenges. "This is a spiritual test, this is a spiritual war, as much as it is a material one. People say, ‘As above, so below.' How we are interfacing with the physical realities of this moment, the ways that we are leveraging our daily energy are either making us complicit with life's desecration or helping us to affirm life and the spirit of resistance. The battle that we are in is right now!"— Layla K. Feghali on the violence in Gaza, Sounds of SAND, Ep. #76We are now over four months into a worsening genocide in Gaza — with over 30,000 murdered and over 2 million now enduring military-enforced famine enacted by Israel, the US, and their global allies. There is no way a 90-minute teaching can impact the depth of sorrow, injustice, betrayal, and state-sponsored violence unfolding in Palestine. And yet, we share a moral obligation to resist the life-desecrating forces at work. Welcome to the monthly call for the E3 Facebook Group: Energetic Explorations for Evolution. This group is open to women and men.  Beth Shekinah Terrence and I started this group in March of 2023 and have used astrology as a way to set a container for a conversation. We pick a monthly theme using the inspiration from the current astrology and share that as a guidepost to explore your own life.  The theme that Beth and I have chosen for Aquarius season is Awakening Innovation, Collaboration and New Visions. I can't remember which astrologer said this. Chani Nicholas, Pam Gregory, Heather Ensworth, Molly McCord or Verena Borell so apologies for not writing that down. It was a reference to how The Sun and Pluto were both in Capricorn on January 20 and then they would both be entering Aquarius within 12 hours of each other.  And to emphasize this even more, Mercury, the planet of communication and the New Moon on February 9 are also in Aquarius - The new moon falls at 1 degree of Aquarius, plus it also brings the start of the lunar new year. a new beginning and a time to plant seeds for 2024.  The quote from the mystery astrologer: This signifies a very potent frequency shift in the collective field, as the Sun reveals more of Pluto's transformational journey and what that means for us now. The Sun and Pluto are syncing up in a new cycle of revelations, disclosure, illuminations, secrets, powerful developments, grand declarations, and initiations are coming to the surface. Expect the unexpected as the Aquarius energy signature is electrifying, igniting, shocking, disruptive, and fast-moving, so we'll also need to stay intentional and grounded as we'll be feeling a lot pulsing through our nervous systems. So, think about how this energy shift has been affecting you over the past two weeks. There was so much shifting for Beth and me that we were delayed in recording the monthly conversation for the E3 Facebook Group: Energetic Explorations for Evolution  There have been solar flares and electrical upgrades on the earth and through our bodies. Be gentle with yourself.    Andrea is the author of Heal My Voice: An Evolutionary Woman's Journey and is the founder of Heal My Voice. https://www.amazon.com/Heal-My-Voice-Evolutionary-Journey-ebook/dp/B07FRDXTTN/ Author Page on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Andrea-Hylen/e/B002C1XZCU/ Website: http://www.andreahylen.com/  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3p9mPdcncZ0Iju63v9mDYj?si=b34da6ef877544cd   Link to Carving a New Path Podcast on iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/carving-a-new-path-podcast/id1509862803   This podcast began in 2020 in response to all the change that people were experiencing. Almost as soon as I finished watching Zarrar Kahn's film IN FLAMES, I emailed Todd Brown, head of international acquisitions at XYZ Films, asking: how did you find this gem of a film? In this episode, Todd tells me.The discussion is wide-ranging, all-encompassing, and fun. When we finished taping, I felt like I knew so many things about how independent film works that I never knew before. Todd answers every question about film production and distribution with authority, knowledge, and clarity. In this episode, Todd and I talk about:how he got started in filmmaking;how film festivals can be a proving ground of sorts to showcase your ability as a film executive;the success going from old horror film blogs to filmmaking because they know how "stories are supposed to work" and an "understanding of market forces";is he genre specific or does he have a wide range of tastes in film?;what questions is he asking when he reads a script?;his feelings about the state of independent film;the brilliance of the film TALK TO ME;his thoughts on film school;how XYZ takes on new directors, and the difference between the United States and pretty much everywhere else on that;DON'T MORTGAGE YOUR HOME TO FUND YOUR FILM -- really, it needs to be in caps, Todd says;his view on the international markets, calling Gen Z the most global generation ever -- "the subtitle barrier do not exist for them";does he want people to know it is an "XYZ film" or genre-agnostic?the beauty of IN FLAMES, which premiered at Cannes as the debut title for New Visions, XYZ's new label for microbudget horror films by emerging directors;how the firm nurtures new directors;what's next for this visionary film and production company.Todd's Indie Film Highlight: FROM BEYOND, dir. by Fredrik S. As we close out 2023, it's time to take stock of the Communities Movement and consider where we might be headed in the future. In this episode we are joined by new FIC co-director Daniel Greenberg, who brings his deep experience from the ecovillage world, as well years living in and researching international communities like Findhorn and Auroville to his visions for what is possible for collaborative culture, communities, and the people who live and grow inside them. In 1999, Daniel Greenberg founded the non-profit Living Routes, which partnered with UMass-Amherst to run study abroad programs based in ecovillages around the world. Over 1,500 students were transformed by these immersive experiences. Daniel left Living Routes in 2012 to start a new social venture called Earth Deeds, which offers online tools for individuals and groups to “onset” their unavoidable CO2 emissions and support meaningful sustainability projects. Daniel has been a leading advocate for sustainability within international education and the ecovillage movement. He chaired Sustainability Task Forces for NAFSA:  Association of International Educators and the Forum for Education Abroad, is co-founder and past Board Member of Gaia Education, served as President of the Global Ecovillage Network from 2015-2019, and is currently co-director of the Foundation for Intentional Community. Hey Sox fans! Welcome back to Good Guys Talk Back. The White Sox announced their 2024 coaching staff and the new hitting coach will be Marcus Thames. It seems like a vision of better situational hitting is shared by both Getz and Thames. Tony La Russa is still around in an advisory role and are the Sox listening to offers on Dylan Cease? Chris Getz does not like the team and Jerry Reinsdorf apparently did not care for Sox play-by-play man Jason Benetti... or at least those are the rumors. Benetti is leaving the Sox booth for Detroit. How did the Sox fumble this situation? Another week, another loss for the Sox. The complete digitization of an organization is inevitable in today’s rapidly evolving technological world. As seemingly daily technological advances are made, there can be resistance to the willingness to adopt these valuable tools into an organization. Sometimes slow change is inherent and is deeply rooted in the mentality of “what’s worked” versus “what’s possible.” Leaders at the C-suite level have a tremendous task: Creating a vision for the future while aligning these emerging tools with company culture and values. Dr. Abel Sanchez, Executive Director of the Geospatial Data Center at MIT, and Prof. John R. Williams, Director of the Geospatial Data Center at MIT, open this two-part series on data leadership as it pertains to the slow change of adapting new technologies to organizations due to decision making by C-suite executives. Explore the innovation and genius of generative AI tools like GitHub and ChatGPT 3. Also, examine why certain technologies, such as cloud technology, have yet to receive better recognition or marketing. Join us as we explore the emerging technological frontier as an intersection between data, emerging technologies, and how C-suite-level decision-makers adapt in the ever-evolving information age.

Today, it's Midday at the Museum.  Two museums, to be exact. The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Maryland Center for History and Culture have each named new directors within the last several months. Asma Naeem took the reins of the BMA in February. Katie Caljean assumed the top job at the Maryland Center last fall. They join us today on Midday to talk about their plans for their respective institutions, and to share their reflections on the changing roles of museums in Baltimore and beyond. Asma Naeem was born in Pakistan. She moved to Baltimore as a two-year-old. She is the first person of color to lead the BMA in its 109-year history. Her career as an art historian and curator was preceded by a career as a lawyer, including a tenure as a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office in New York. Asma Naeem joins us on Zoom from her office at the museum. We are also joined by Asma's BMA colleague, Gamynne Guillotte, the museum's Chief of Education and co-curator of a new exhibition at the BMA that celebrates Hip Hop, during this 50th anniversary of the influential genre. Along with two colleagues from the St. Louis Art Museum, they are co-curating The Culture:  Hip Hop & Contemporary Art in the 21st Century. This exhibition is a ticketed show, but there are a few days when admission to the exhibition is free. The next one is Sunday, May 21st. The exhibition closes July 16th. In the final segment of the program today, Tom's guest is Katie Caljean, the president and CEO of the Maryland Center for History and Culture. She was appointed to the top job last fall, after serving at the Center for about 10 years, most recently as its senior vice president of education and strategic engagement. Katie Caljean joins Tom in Studio A. The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited opens at the Maryland Center for History and Culture on Memorial Day weekend, on Friday, May 26. It will be at the Center until December. [Posted image: Artist Joyce J. Scott. The book of the moment for today's episode is All About Love, New Visions by Bell Hooks. Just a forewarning for those of you listening, this is NOT a spoiler-free zone. We will be discussing this book in all of its glory, which of course includes revealing the ending. Gloria Jean Watkins (September 25, 1952 – December 15, 2021), better known by her pen name bell hooks, was an American author and social activist who was a Distinguished Professor in Residence at Berea College. She is best known for her writings on race, feminism, and class. The focus of hooks's writing was to explore the intersectionality of race, capitalism, and gender, and what she described as their ability to produce and perpetuate systems of oppression and class domination. She published around 40 books, including works that ranged from essays, poetry, and children's books. She published numerous scholarly articles, appeared in documentary films, and participated in public lectures. Her work addressed love, race, class, gender, art, history, sexuality, mass media, and feminism. She began her academic career in 1976 teaching English and ethnic studies at the University of Southern California. She later taught at several institutions including Stanford University, Yale University, and The City College of New York, before joining Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, in 2004, where she founded the bell hooks Institute in 2014. Her pen name was borrowed from her maternal great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks. Scott Haase farms in Blue Earth, Minnesota, raising crops with his brother Brent and raising pasture and woodland pork under Blue Dirt Farm. Their German ancestors “walked here from Wisconsin back in the 1860's,” and they still farm some of the land where those ancestors homesteaded. Like most in the area, the Haase family farm is still a fairly conventional corn and soybeans farm. They have made some changes, including going completely no-till on their soybeans and reducing tillage overall, and adding cover crops to their management. The soil in the region feels difficult to manage for most, but Scott thinks “tillage here just begets more tillage” and the transition has been worth it. In his conversation with host Jared Luhman, Scott discusses the challenges and joys of raising Mangalitsa pigs on pasture, including pasture rotation, marketing, inventory management, processing, and fencing technology. He has long range goals for the land, and is mindful of the risk of burnout. “It's very hard and you need support from customers and the community at large” he says, reflecting on the value of farmer-to-farmer relationships and knowledge that he's built through SFA and other networks. His passion and self-admitted stubbornness keep him moving forward: “I really want to make an impact on more land than just my own farm…I've really gotten excited about finding things that work on the land and sharing those with people and providing really high-quality products.”   Scott Haase, Blue Dirt Farm Jared Luhman, Soil Health Lead, SFA   Cannon Valley Butcher's Block The Meatery   If you've enjoyed this podcast, please consider supporting Dirt Rich and SFA's work by donating or becoming a member at www.sfa-mn.org.
