As FRONTLINE celebrates 40 years on the air, editor-in-chief and executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath is hosting conversations with the journalists and filmmakers behind some of FRONTLINE's most groundbreaking work. A.C. Thompson is a reporter for ProPublica who has been a correspondent with FRONTLINE since 2010. He joins The FRONTLINE Dispatch to discuss his years of reporting on right-wing extremism for award-winning films like American Insurrection and the series Documenting Hate in light of recent high-profile incidents of antisemitism. “Over time, if you were following the key sort of white nationalist and right wing extremist talking points, you saw more and more antisemitism coming through,” Thompson told Aronson-Rath. “What I think you've seen since then is sort of a quiet but steady uptick in antisemitism and now it's bursting onto the scene.” Thompson also reflects on the unique investigative collaborations he and FRONTLINE developed over the years, and previews what he's working on in 2023. A violent mob of President Donald Trump's supporters invaded the U.S. Capitol on January 6, as Congress met to certify Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States. The rioters plotted for weeks beforehand on social media, mobilizing around the president's false claims of a stolen election.  Who are the forces behind the attack, how did it unfold and why was the law enforcement presence so easily overpowered? ProPublica reporter and FRONTLINE correspondent A.C. Thompson, who covered the rise of right-wing extremism for our joint "Documenting Hate" series, joins The FRONTLINE Dispatch to discuss what happened at the Capitol and what the future may hold. Thompson’s reporting is part of an ongoing collaboration between ProPublica and FRONTLINE that includes an upcoming documentary.

On this week's episode of the Free Thought Project podcast, Jason, Johnny, and Matt talk with Ford Fischer of News2Share. Fischer is an independent journalist and filmmaker who recently received an Emmy honor for his footage that was used in the PBS documentary, Charlottesville.  He is the editor-in-chief of New2Share, a company which has White House press credentials. News2Share is a platform for raw video journalism related to political activism. Fischer co-founded News2Share with Trey Yingst in 2014 when they were both college students. Fischer reported on the violence at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. His footage was featured in Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman and ProPublica's Documenting Hate. In the podcast, we talk about how Fischer's channel News2Share was demonetized, so that it would no longer receive ad revenue from YouTube as part of YouTube's restricted monetization policies. Fischer was banned from posting content on Facebook for three days as he tried to share an article about his censorship on YouTube. His work is entirely objective, yet continues to be the target of censors. You can follow his work here: https://twitter.com/FordFischer

Daryle Lamont Jenkins on Documenting Hate in Charlottesville and Beyond Daryle Lamont Jenkins believes "the pen is mightier than the sword" and has been writing about, filming, and otherwise getting the word out about neo-Nazi and other hate organizations for decades. He has appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show and AM Joy with Joy Reid, ABC's 20/20, and in countless articles and documentaries (Alt-Right: Age of Rage, Erasing Hate) focusing on antifa's fight against the so-called “alt-right." Daryle co-produced the short film, Skin, which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. He first joined a counterprotest against a KKK rally in New Hope, PA in the early nineties and founded the anti-hate organization One People's Project in New Brunswick, NJ in 2000. In this conversation with Robin Renée, he talks about early experiences that inspired his work, an on-the-ground account of documenting and protesting the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, and what you can do to help the anti-fascist movement. Co-hosts Wendy Sheridan, Robin Renée, and Mary McGinley begin the show with 3 Random Facts and the News, though the facts are more timely than random. Learn about how the results of the U.S. census information is used, National Ferret Day (April 2nd), and a theory of the origin of April Fool's Day. In the news, people are using 3-D printers to make respirator valves and other much-needed medical equipment to deal with the novel coronavirus pandemic. There is also a lot or misinformation and disinformation out there, so listen to the COVIDiocy PSA and take heed. Later in The Blanket Fort, Wendy, Robin, and Mary check in about how they're coping with social distancing and personal connections facilitated by Zoom. After years of debate, the Utah Legislature this month approved a new hate crimes law that could add penalty enhancements to crimes based on a victim's race, religion, sexual orientation and other characteristics. The update to Utah's criminal code coincides with an ongoing project by The Salt Lake Tribune and ProPublica to track and analyze hate crimes, with the aim of improving what is currently unreliable and incomplete data around the nature and scope of hate in the state and the nation. On this week's episode of "Trib Talk," Tribune editor Jennifer Napier-Pearce moderates a panel discussion on hate crimes that includes Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill, Salt Lake City Democratic Rep. Sandra Hollins and Tribune reporter Paighton Harkins. "Trib Talk" is produced by Sara Weber. Comments and feedback can be sent to tribtalk@sltrib.com, or to @bjaminwood or @tribtalk on Twitter.

In the wake of the deadly anti-Semitic attack at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, FRONTLINE and ProPublica present a new investigation into white supremacist groups in America – in particular, a neo-Nazi group, Atomwaffen Division, that has actively recruited inside the U.S. military. Continuing FRONTLINE and ProPublica’s reporting on violent white supremacists in the U.S. (which has helped lead to multiple arrests), this joint investigation shows the group’s terrorist objectives and how it gained strength after the 2017 Charlottesville rally.

After the 2016 election, reporters across the country began noticing what seemed like a wave of hate crimes, harassment and abuse. But with limited data, they weren’t sure if what they were seeing marked an increase. To solve that problem, more than 100 news organizations united to tell the story of hate in America. They’re led by ProPublica’s Rachel Glickhouse, the partner manager for the project “Documenting Hate.” On this episode, we talk to Rachel and Jessica Weiss, a Univision reporter participating in the collaboration.
