On April 19, 1995—29 years ago tomorrow—at 9:02 a.m., a fertilizer truck bomb exploded outside of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, an act of domestic terrorism perpetrated by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. Fueled by anti-government sentiment—and specifically angered by the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, Ruby Ridge in 1992, and the Waco siege exactly two years to the day earlier in 1993—the blast killed 168 and injured 680. Prior to September 11, 2001, the bombing was the deadliest act of terrorism in U.S. history and remains to this day the deadliest act of domestic terrorism our country has ever seen. The bomb destroyed more than one-third of the building—which ultimately had to be demolished—and damaged 324 other buildings, causing an estimated $652 million in damages. Forensic evidence quickly linked McVeigh and Nichols to the bombing, and within days, both were charged. On that April 19, McVeigh detonated a Ryder truck in front of the building; Nichols had assisted with the bomb's preparation. McVeigh and Nichols had met in 1988 during basic training for the Army and were both tried and convicted in 1997; McVeigh was executed by lethal injection on June 11, 2001, and Nichols is currently serving life in prison. The victims of the bombing ranged in age from three months old to 73 years old and included three pregnant women; 19 of the victims were babies and children, many of whom were in the building's day care center. Today on the show we honor the victims of this senseless attack by talking to Jeffrey Toobin, author of the definitive book on the bombing, 2023's Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right-Wing Extremism, and the host of the excellent and brand-new podcast Homegrown: OKC. This episode's guest is Julie Farnam, who was a witness before the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack, in which she testified regarding intelligence she had obtained before January 6th that attendees intended to come to the event armed, that white supremacists planned to attend, that participants were sharing maps of the Capitol tunnels, and many other data points that ought to have been sufficient for the USCP to adequately prepare. This interview is occasioned by the publication of her forthcoming book, “Domestic Darkness: An Insider's Account of the January 6 Insurrection and the Future of Right-Wing-Extremism,” which is available for preorder now, wherever books are sold, with a publication date of January 2nd, 2024. Farnam had served as the Assistant Director of the Intelligence and Interagency Coordination Division (IICD) for the USCP during the run-up to, and then in the aftermath of, the January 6th, 2021 attack on the Capitol. Following the resignation of her immediate superior, Jack Donohue, in the Spring of 2021, Farnam assumed the position of Acting Director of the Intelligence and Interagency Coordination Division for the USCP. Then, when she was passed over for Donohue's job in March of 2022, Farnam returned to her Assistant Director position, which she later left. We discuss Farnam's experiences in her government career, and the "culture of mediocrity" that was evident in the failure of USCP leadership to act on the intelligence IICD had provided in the assessment she wrote and submitted on January 3rd, 2021. We also discuss how it was that she came to be interviewed by the FBI regarding an MPD officer who allegedly gave sensitive law enforcement information regarding investigations and pending arrests with the Chairman of the Proud Boys. Today we're talking about the atrocious shooting at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas, that took place Saturday. We go through the horrifying event, which took the lives of eight people, and explain why the conversation surrounding gun violence needs to be addressed in good faith by both parties, yet the Left doesn't seem to want to do that. We also look at the media response to the shooting, which – surprising no one – was filled with reporters very quickly building a narrative. Many liberal outlets almost immediately claimed from an anonymous source that the shooter had white supremacist roots despite not even being white. While the event is still being investigated, those reports seem to be largely unfounded at the moment. We also discuss big upcoming changes in our immigration system that will see a massive wave of migrants at the border. Then, we take a look at a CNN article that attempts to gain sympathy for a woman who was forced to carry her baby to term due to Florida's abortion restrictions. The woman argues it was even more horrifying to give birth and hold her son for 92 hours than it would have been to abort him, but the question remains – horrifying for whom?
