How do we break the mold? How do we change our bad habits, attitudes and self-perceptions that aren't serving us and redefine how we show up in the world? Is self-transformation even possible? Raizy asked these questions when she embarked on a personal journey of self-discovery. She recorded it and her takeaways in her new book, The Anatomy of a Yenta: Break the Yenta Mold, Embrace Dignity, and Create an Elegant Life. We've brought Raizy on to DMC (for the second time!) to share her story and give us insights into how we can embark on our own self-transformation journeys. Boat matchmaking! Aaron and Flavia want to get into boating in South Carolina on Lake Hartwell. We learn Boat Math, work the ups and downs of various boats, drool over Glasstrons and Chris Crafts, and ultimately convince Steph she needs another boat! We waited to look up what yenta actually means after recording the episode. Turns out it means nosy and meddling not matchmaker which actually works way better.
Meet my friend Aleeza Ben Shalom, a Jewish matchmaker, dating coach, and podcast host who has captivated hearts and sparked laughter across the globe. How difficult is it to be somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum? Now ask yourself if it's difficult to be Jewish. Put those two challenges together and you have yourself one of the most difficult identities to embrace. The intersection of sexual identity, gender identity, and Jewish identity can sometimes harmoniously fall into place. For the most part, it's a challenging and often scrutinized route to follow. Comedian and writer Raye Schiller jumps onto Bad Jew to discuss their identity, their sexuality, and how it clashed with their Judaism. Having delved into many styles of religious practice, Raye reflects on their journey so far and what it means to study the Torah in the current place they're at. Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew and ally to the LGBTQ world, workshops with Raye on the best ways to embrace LGBTQ identity while embracing the Jewish journey. About Raye Schiller: Raye Schiller is a Los Angeles-based comedian and writer known for her razor-sharp wit and her ability to make even the most taboo topics hilarious. As a queer formerly Orthodox Jew, Raye is basically a walking contradiction, and her comedy reflects that perfectly. Raye's infectious energy and unique perspective have taken her to venues around the world, including Paris, Rome, Lisbon and Peru. She's performed at top comedy clubs like the Hollywood Improv and Broadway Comedy Club. With their fearless approach and undeniable talent, Raye is quickly becoming a rising star in the comedy world. If you're holding a dream that feels both impossible and essential…If you think (in your very smart strategic scheming mind) that you've got a surefire path to achieving that dream that has everything to do with work. Hard work…If you know deep in your bones (despite your very smart strategic mind) that life's Big Gifts tend to be offered by way of resonance far more than clenched fist attachments…If you miss sitting at your auntie's kitchen table with a cup of Wild Sweet Orange tea, listening to her riveting stories of mystical encounters and fated characters… (or you never had that auntie, always longed for her)…In this podcast episode, I share the wild, serendipitous tale of how Seann and I ended up moving to a real life village. For a while there, I (like you perhaps?) forgot to practice my magic.Stuck in the rut of linear, individualistic, capitalistic approaches to change (self-extraction as an extreme sport, ya know?), I convinced myself that to get to a village would require buying the land, gathering the people, and starting everything from scratch on my own.Ha! I convinced myself (scratch that, capitalism convinced me) that the way to the Other World was with the means of This World.Audre Lorde was wise when she said, the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. We are living in a collective house stripped of spirit or magic, built on the foundations of pressure, force and disembodied exploitation.Maybe our minds have been brainwashed into believing we can “achieve” the New World with the tools of the Old… but our spirits? They know the truth. This episode is a story for your soul.If your dream feels out of reach…If your heart is starved for story…If you're chasing money as the means to your soul's end……and you wanna remember the magic of Life itself, and the way Life wants to partner with you, play Yenta between you and your visions.Press play. Tune in. 40 minutes from now, you might feel like a renewed human. With wild love & a heart full of trust.xox,RachaelPS – Doors are open for CEO Coven. A 6-month mentorship program that includes transformative 1:1 sessions as well as potent group councils and rituals (and more). I'll send you the details. We begin mid-May. $15k. Epic support to birth your next chapter.PPS – Are you listening to these podcasts?!?! Are you loving them?? Would you press reply and/or comment and share the impact? This is new territory for me. I'm loving it, AND feel vulnerable doing it. Narrated with clarity and poise by Gilli Messer and Allen Rickman, this audiobook takes more than 35 hours but is worth it. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile contributor Alan Minskoff discuss Polish Nobel Laureate Olga Tokarczuk's sprawling historical novel set in the eighteenth century. Both Messer and Rickman capture the tonality of the language and the author's elegant writing, and the novel teems with unique characters—including a spiritual presence named Yenta who omnisciently hovers over the proceedings. Outstanding and compelling listening. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Penguin Audio.
