What happens when the worst thing you've ever done becomes the foundation for your life's work?Episode SummaryMy guest on this episode is Tom Hardin, otherwise known as Tipper X. He's been on the show before, but this time we're tackling a different angle. If you don't already know his story, Tom was a rising star in the hedge fund world in his twenties when he became involved in insider trading. Caught by the FBI, he made the decision to cooperate — ultimately becoming one of the most prolific informants in the largest investigation of its kind in U.S. history. His work with the FBI helped secure dozens of convictions, and while his own case remained under seal for years, he eventually chose to speak publicly about what happened — not to excuse it, but to help others understand how good people can make bad decisions. If you haven't heard Tom's first appearance on the show, where he tells that extraordinary story in full, I highly recommend listening to it here before diving into this episode.Because this time, we're not talking about what he did back then; we're talking about what he's done since. Tom has built a powerful second act, using his experience to educate organisations about ethics, decision-making and behavioural risk. He's now delivered over 600 talks, and what fascinates me is how he's turned that into something both impactful and sustainable. His forthcoming book Wired on Wall Street is due out next year, and he'll be back on the show to talk about that. But for now, I wanted to explore what it means to build a career from a cautionary tale. In this conversation, we explore:How Tom built a speaking business around his past without glamourising itThe frameworks he's developed to help companies recognise ethical pressure pointsHow he navigates scepticism, manages reputation, and avoids turning his story into a performanceThe impact he hopes to have, and how he measures itThis is a conversation about vulnerability, professionalism, and doing good with what you've learned the hard way. Whether you're in compliance, leadership, education, or just curious about how we turn failure into purpose, this one's for you.Guest ProfileTom is a former hedge fund analyst turned FBI informant, now a globally recognised speaker and ethics educator. Known as Tipper X, Tom shares his story to help others understand the behavioural drivers of misconduct and the power of accountability. The old rule — "selling bad, buying good" — misses a lot today. Insider behavior now includes plan-driven sales, comp mechanics, shifting blackout policies, and more. For example, one insider signal isn't a buy or a sell at all, but a pause in selling.Key questions that emerge:· How do you find positive signals at companies where insiders never buy stock?· What does it mean when executives who sell millions regularly suddenly stop?In this episode, Ben Silverman and Senior Analyst Max Magee examine the "cessation selling" phenomenon through 3 key examples:· Microsoft: First pause in insider selling since 2004 — stock up 40% since the signal.· Expedia: Five-year selling streak ends at $150/share — stock rebounds to $225.· Tableau Software: Co-founders cancel $35-50 million sale plans — company acquired months later at premium.Edited, mixed, and scored by Calvin Marty.

In this episode, Will and Adam examine former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich's comments comparing today to the Gilded Age. We acknowledge there are several similarities, including increasing wealth disparity, the emergence of disruptive technology, and widespread commingling of government with business. We specifically discuss the recent discussion around the government taking stake in public companies, which, though has a precedent, was used in the past during times of financial crisis, i.e., to keep automakers afloat during the financial crisis. We discuss the (until just recently) ebullient vibes in the stock market, and why some of the forefront of the AI revolution are starting to sound a little more cautious about what AI can deliver in the near-term. However, that has not stopped investors from returning to familiar favorites from the 2021 run-up, with this rally's best performers including: Non-profitable tech Most shorted stocks Meme stocks With Fed chair Powell on tap for Jackson Hole, we look at the recent Fed minutes, which indicating a focus more on inflation than jobs, and why that could change if job revisions continue to be revised lower. However, with the inflation effect of tariffs expected to shift from businesses to consumers soon, will the Fed have the flexibility to cut rates as much as investors currently believe? With both anecdotes and hard data indicating a struggling consumer, the Fed is in a tough spot and under continuing political pressure. We conclude with why it is important to remain systematic and focused on long-term investing success and resist the temptation of the continued gamification of stock trading, with platforms like Robin Hood now exploring the addition of traditional sports wagering alongside retail investment accounts. It's the heat of the Summer in Washington DC, but hell is freezing over anyway. Why? Because veteran stock market wizard Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), has come out in support of a bill that will ban members of Congress from trading in stocks or options. For late arrivals, former House Speaker Pelosi has for more than a decade been the poster child for members of Congress who became rich by trading on inside information to predict the movement of the stock market. Pelosi has long tried to deflect criticism by saying that her husband makes all the stock moves, but the numbers don't lie: While the S&P index is up by 240 percent over the last 10 years, Pelosi and her husband are up an eye-popping 745 percent.

We Dig Deep into Scott Bessent's attempt to ban insider trading by members of Congress. Plus, homeless people in D.C. are being moved from the street to rehab, and that's a Bright Spot. And we finish off with a turtle that will make you say, "Whoa!"
Hour 3 kicks off with a recap of the outrageous removal of a fan at a St. Louis soccer game for wearing a MAGA hat, highlighting left-wing intolerance. The conversation shifts to a deep legal dive on Missouri's controversial stadium subsidy bill with attorney Beavis Schock, who explains why the bill likely violates the state constitution's single-subject rule. The stadium deal effectively means taxpayers are footing Patrick Mahomes' massive salary, sparking serious pushback. Next, senior Heritage Foundation expert Jim Carafano weighs in on Middle East tensions, critiquing misguided Palestinian state recognition moves by Canada and the UK, and explaining the geopolitical reality that only the U.S. and Israel hold true influence over the Gaza conflict. Carafano predicts Hamas' irrelevance and urges focusing on a stable future. Congressman Eric Burleson joins to discuss insider trading concerns around Nancy Pelosi, calling for a serious investigation while acknowledging the complexity of broad legislative attempts to curb stock trading by members of Congress. Burleson also weighs in on the ongoing deep-state scandal, calling it treasonous and insisting the corrupt actors must be prosecuted. Kim closes the hour with “Kim on a Whim,” sounding alarms over a new Illinois law mandating annual mental health screenings in public schools from grades 3–12. She questions the lack of parental transparency and consent, potential privacy violations, and the risk of bureaucratic overreach in politically hostile environments.
Summary: In Hour 3 Segment 3, Congressman Eric Burleson joins the show to discuss the controversial insider trading allegations against Nancy Pelosi. Burleson emphasizes the need for transparency and investigation but pushes back against broad-brush accusations targeting all members of Congress, noting Pelosi's unique access as part of the "gang of eight." He explains why many members avoid stock trading due to disclosure burdens and potential criticism. The conversation shifts to the broader "deep state" and intelligence community abuses during the Obama era, including the weaponization of intelligence against Trump and recent revelations like the discovery of classified documents in "burn bags." Burleson calls for prosecutions of those responsible, calling the political weaponization treasonous. Lastly, Burleson predicts Congress will likely pass a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown, acknowledging the difficulty in passing full appropriations due to competing interests and earmarks.

In Hour 3, Segment 2, former Senator Jim Talent joins the show to discuss the brewing conflict between President Trump and Senator Josh Hawley over a bill aimed at banning insider trading by members of Congress. Talent supports the bill's intent to stop lawmakers from profiting off nonpublic information but cautions about overburdening honest candidates with excessive restrictions. He emphasizes the importance of transparency through disclosure and stronger ethics enforcement rather than outright bans. Talent explains how current rules require presidents to place assets in blind trusts and suggests a similar system for Congress could be a solution. The segment closes with Talent's confident prediction that Congress will avoid a government shutdown in September, though he criticizes the ongoing dysfunction around budget appropriations.
Hour 3 delivers a hard-hitting look at political corruption and accountability in St. Louis County, featuring David Stokes of the Show Me Institute breaking down Sam Page's indictment and the decades-long abuse of taxpayer-funded political mailers. Former Senator Jim Talent tackles the brewing feud between President Trump and Senator Josh Hawley over insider trading legislation, stressing transparency without choking public service. Former Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson exposes the real dangers of social media-fueled misinformation in policing, using the violent Cincinnati assault as a case study and warning about the woke justice system letting violent criminals loose. Finally, Kim Otto previews the Trump-backed plan to streamline medical records through opt-in tech apps, acknowledging privacy fears but emphasizing the need for modernization and patient control. A power-packed hour revealing the failures and fights shaping America today.

Send us a textWe're thrilled to welcome Congressman Seth Magaziner — a longtime friend from our high school and college days — for a conversation about the intersection of finance, policy, and politics. We break down the proposed tax bill currently moving through Congress, the state of U.S. debt and deficits, and insider trading laws for elected officials, and Seth's background in finance and public service working as the youngest treasurer of Rhode Island for 8 years. We dive into the details of the proposed $5 trillion tax cuts, $2 trillion spending cuts, and the projected $3–5 trillion increase in debt over the next decade — and what all of this could mean for markets, companies, and investors. We also explore the surprisingly legal practice of members of Congress trading stocks while in office, and Seth's bipartisan effort to ban it.Sign up for our Talent Accelerator HERE today!Shop the MAY SALE:- Buy the FULL IBD / PE course for 20% off HERE- M&A Standalone Course $50 OFF HERE Enroll in the Financial Modeling Talent Accelerator HERE Join the Fixed Income Sales and Trading waitlist HERE Our content is for informational purposes only. The portfolios of members of Congress outperform the S&P 500 by 17%. That's not smart investing— that's insider trading. Today, Nicole shares some jaw-dropping examples of insider trading in Washington, and how we can use politicians' investment disclosures to predict the future.
Join Jim and Greg for Tuesday's 3 Martini Lunch as they dig into the left winning in Canada again, progress and setbacks in the fight against the Houthis, and a congressional effort to rein in stock trades with the bluntly named PELOSI Act.First, they groan as Canada's liberals notch another win, despite earlier signs the Conservative Party might be poised for huge gains. Some on the right blame former President Trump, arguing his tariff threats and repeated jabs about Canada being America's 51st state rallied voters towards the Liberals But others say Canadians have only themselves to blame for re-electing the same people who badly damaged their country just because Trump made them angry.Next, they react to troubling developments in the Red Sea, where an American FA/18 fighter jet was lost as the USS Harry S. Truman evaded a Houthi missile strike. While no personnel have been harmed, the U.S. has lost seven drones in the region. On the positive side, CENTCOM also reports significant damage to critical Houthi infrastructure and the deaths of many leaders and fighters. Still, Jim is alarmed by how little attention this ongoing conflict gets from both the media and the Trump administration. Finally, they cheer on a bill aimed at banning members of Congress from trading individual stocks — and revel in the fact it's called the PELOSI Act, a not-so-subtle jab at former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's controversial financial dealings. But they also wonder if the bill's name might need tweaking to get enough Democrats on board. Please visit our great sponsors:It's free, online, and easy to start—no strings attached. This week on Ring of Fire! A series of polls came out this week with the worst news that Trump has gotten during his second term. Not only has his approval on the economy tanked, but now a majority of voters squarely blame him for the state of the economy instead of Biden. On top of that, even the conservative pollsters are showing their worst numbers ever for Trump. Things have gone from bad to worse for Trump in a record amount of time. Donald Trump might be on the receiving end of another serious investigation launched by New York Attorney General Letitia James. James' office announced this week that they were “reviewing” possible insider trading allegations against the administration for their stock market boasts and gains after Trump “paused” tariffs last week (which was preceded by Trump saying on Truth Social that now is a “great time to buy.”) There are some interesting aspects of this situation. And the Trump administration has triggered a major Constitutional crisis by openly defying an order by the US Supreme Court, while Trump himself acts like he is powerless in the face of the President of El Salvador. Trump has shown us what a weak coward he truly is, but he's a weak coward that wants to be a dictator. All that, and much more, on this week's Ring of Fire Podcast!
Guests: Leah Litman, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, Joe Weisenthal, Stephanie Kelton, Sen. Jeff Merkley, Michelle GoldbergAnother loss for the Trump Administration as the Supreme Court grants a partial victory to one of the men they shipped to El Salvador without cause. Plus, The markets realize Trump's huge tariffs are still in effect. Then, Democrats dig in on the possibility of insider trading on Trump's market comments. Want more of Chris? Today's Headlines: The stock market fell sharply Thursday, erasing gains from Wednesday's rally, after the White House clarified Trump's China tariffs are effectively 145%, not 125%, and will now include small consumer shipments under the “de minimis” rule—impacting retailers like Shein and Temu. Apple reportedly airlifted 600 tons of iPhones from India to beat the tariffs. Amid the chaos, Democratic senators called for an insider trading investigation following unusually well-timed trades before Trump's tariff pause announcement. Meanwhile, the House passed the SAVE Act, requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, and Trump's budget bill, which includes deep spending cuts and $4.5 trillion in tax breaks for the wealthy. The Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to help return a Maryland man mistakenly deported to El Salvador, despite unsupported claims he was an MS-13 member. The administration is also moving to place Columbia University under a federal consent decree over antisemitism. Elsewhere, a helicopter crash in the Hudson killed six people, two planes clipped wings at Reagan National Airport, and the Senate confirmed Trump donor George Glass as ambassador to Japan.
