This week's episode is pretty special, most of the time when my guests choose a film or a tv show, it's picked because they enjoy it or they've been wanting to check it out. My friend that is on here this week is actually a CODA, Child of Deaf Adults, her sister is also deaf, so this film was a lot closer to her than others we've done. The film was released in August of 2021 and is available to stream on Apple TV+, Apple bought the distribution rights for a record (at the time) $25 million after premiering at Sundance. It went on to win Best Motion Picture of the Year (the first movie produced by a streaming service to win Best Picture), Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Troy Kotsur became the first deaf actor to win an Oscar), and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars. The film was written and directed by Sian Heder (it was adapted from the French-Belgium film La Famille Bélier that was written by Victoria Bedos, Stanislas Carré de Malberg, Éric Lartigau, and Thomas Bidegain, and was directed by Éric Lartigau) and stars Marlee Matlin (first deaf actress to win Best Actress for Children of a Lesser God), Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, and Eugenio Derbez. I highly recommend checking the film out, it was very well deserving of winning Best Picture. CODA Cocktail (https://www.timeout.com/los-angeles/things-to-do/best-picture-nominee-cocktails-at-fannys): Ingredients 2 squirts saline tincture (5% salt:filtered water) 1 tsp Mommenpop Seville Orange 1 tsp Benedictine 1/4 oz Varnelli Caffé Moka 1/2 oz Giffard Banane du Bresil 1 1/2 oz Fortaleza Tequila Blanco Drinking Game (drinkwhen.ca): Anyone says “Ruby” Anyone sings A song begins You see fish The family bickers As always, drink responsibly. Deep Fear is a French-Belgium co-production about three friends who are spending one last day together. One of them is going into the military the next day, so they want this day to be a special one. They decide to take a trip through the Paris catacombs. What is an exciting idea on the surface turns into their worst nightmares.Unsurprisingly, there are lots of tight moments that give a feeling of claustrophobia. While Aril enjoys cave horror, Blake does not like the feeling of getting caught in closed quarters. But did Deep Fear do enough to make either of them feel anything? We also talk about whether the horror aspects worked and the surprising lack of a sense of urgency.Despite its flaws, Deep Fear does a lot of things right. The setting is great and the film does a great job with lighting and shadows. The characters are well-written and there is great attention to detail. Do the pros outweigh the cons or were we all left to disappointed by the narrative? Some Like it Rare also struck a chord with two of us. Nathaniel cannot stand cannibal movies (Thanks, Cannibal Holocaust) while Candance really enjoys them. But what happens when a cannibal movie subverts expectations and becomes more about people staying together than eating each other? The four of us also debate the film's dark humor, discuss why it is an anti-message movie, and talk about the decision-making of the characters. Since it is a cannibal movie, we also wonder if human flesh tastes good. Plus, a conversation on actually being grossed out versus thinking about it.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Even before the dramatic battle in the air and the subsequent harrowing events on the ground, the story is informative, insightful, and captivating. Prior to the fateful event, the book covers the crew's training, their journey to England, what life was like on base as well as in London and the English countryside, and the perils of the 8th Air Force flying combat missions over occupied Europe and Germany. Through personal letters, oral and written accounts, declassified military documents, and interviews – all from people who took part in the events that happened over 70 years ago (even the German Luftwaffe pilot who shot down the Susan Ruth) - the stories come alive. Adding to the feeling of "being there", are more than 200 time period photographs interspersed throughout the book. To add background and context, many historical facts and anecdotes about and surrounding World War II are entwined throughout the book so that the reader has a feel for and understanding of what was occurring on a broader scale. SHOT DOWN is an account about brave individuals, featuring pilot Howard Snyder, set within the compelling events of the greatest conflict in world history. In 1989, a memorial to the crew of the Susan Ruth was dedicated at Macquenoise, Belgium and every year celebrations are held to honor and remember the men who are now all gone but not forgotten. It is our duty to remember. Hear the life challenges of men, including Steve's father Howard Snyder, shot down over French/ Belgium lines during World War II, surviving with limited resources in prison war camps and surviving being missing in action. Also about where the heart came from Belgian heroes and the crew of the B17 Susan Ruth's training and life on base, as well as where the frame of mind was when the plane was going down and Belgium heroes faced their fate of torture and death for Steve's father when they hid him? What spiritual sense saved half the crew from the B-17 written in the book "Shot Down?" Photo courtesy Learning History. History is such a fascinating topic! I’m absolutely sure of it after my conversation with Steve Snyder. We discussed his book “Shot Down”, World War 2 legacy, and the inspirational life story of his father. Howard Snyder went MIA during World War II when he was flying over French/Belgium border. “Shot Down” focuses on his experience as he and his crew members were trying to survive in a foreign occupied country. This is the story of resilience, bravery, and love. This story does more than just documents the events in Belgium. It uncovers the relationship with the family back at home. After all, Howard had a child at home, and his wife was pregnant again. The book features a number of love letters between Steve’s mother and father, and that sentiment gives the book a whole different dimension. It’s easy for us, civilians, to read war stories and feel detached. X went to Y country for Z reason, this and that happened. But put yourself in the shoes of this family that was affected by the war: the breadwinner of the family was drafted into the war on foreign land. Letters were the only form of communication, and one had to wait weeks to hear from the loved ones. And worse of all, there were no guarantees that a new letter would ever arrive. How chilling is that? Those were the times unlike now. Steve and I chatted about the difference technology makes in communication and how it has different value now that it is abundant. There are 2 sides to each coin, right? Shot Down covers the events leading up to and after the crew of the B 17 Susan Ruth is shot down over the French/Belgium border on February 8, 1944. Of the ten man crew, some died, some ended up in prison camps, and some evaded capture. As for Pilot Howard Snyder, find out how he evaded capture from the Gestapo for 7 long months. Welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GenreCast from GoodTrash Media. This week, our Shocktober marathon of one-word titled films continues with a look at the French/Belgium production, Raw. It Gets Raw Every Shocktober sees at least one artsy horror film rear its head. When the time came, we decided to tackle this foreign production that has been making waves since its festival run. Raw, or Grave, is a horror-thriller from director Julia Ducournau. Justine (Marillier) is a vegetarian and first-year student at veterinary school. She must undergo a series of hazing rituals from older students—including her sister, Alexia (Rumpf). Justine is forced to eat meat—after which, the hunger for flesh only grows. Raw is a tough watch. But, it offers a lot to digest. The film is multilayered. We don't even get to hit everything, to our chagrin. We do talk vegetarianism, sexual awakenings and we carefully tread into discussing eating disorders. However, we wish we could have hit on hazing and bullying in the digital age, general desire and more. Spoiler alert, we may have liked this one quite a bit. As always, before we get down to analysis, we give quick reviews and play a game. This week, we talk about "Memorable Body Horror Sequences". It felt like a fitting pairing. After all of this though, we decide whether Raw is shelve-able, or if it is simply scrap-able. So, how do you like your meal? Well done or still bleeding? Tune in and then let us know!
