Guest Following 4 ½ years of dedicated research about the World War II experiences of his father, pilot Howard Snyder, and the crew of the B-17 Susan Ruth, Steve published his book SHOT DOWN. Steve is president of the 306th Bomb Group Historical Association and on the board of directors of the 8th Air Force Historical Society. Summary This podcast episode explores the air war over Europe during World War II, focusing on the experiences of B-17 bomber crews in the 8th Air Force. The discussion covers the dangerous missions aircrews face, including enemy attacks, harsh weather, and mechanical failures. A key turning point in the air war was the introduction of long-range fighters, such as the P-51, which helped secure Allied air superiority on D-Day. Central to the discussion, Steve shares insights about his father's harrowing experiences as the bomber pilot of the “Susan Ruth, which was shot down over Belgium. Steve's father's story of evasion, joining the French Resistance, and eventual return to American forces is recounted. The episode also touches on Steve's extensive research, including interviewing the German pilot who shot down his father's plane. Three takeaways: The 8th Air Force faced extreme dangers and suffered heavy losses in their bombing campaign. Long-range fighter escorts were crucial in gaining air superiority. Preserving and sharing WWII veterans' stories is vital for educating future generations. Doctors are bound by the ethical requirement to first do no harm. Unfortunately, harm is not something that they can always avoid. Sometimes harm comes about through the actions of doctors, but at other times it comes about because of things they haven't done. David Molyneux is a doctor of medicine who is also working on a doctorate in philosophy, and his PhD thesis is about the difficult ethical questions that arise because of this distinction. Is there a moral difference between doing and allowing harm? But to answer this question, he first needed to get to grips with a prior question: when we allow harm do we thereby cause that harm? And more generally, do allowings, or omissions, cause? Here are some introductory readings on the topic recommended by David:Foot P (1984), Killing and Letting Die, in Steinbock and Norcross, Killing and Letting Die, Second Edition. pp 280-290.  New York: Fordham University Press.McGrath S (2003) Causation and the Making/Allowing Distinction.   Philosophical Studies: An International Journal for Philosophy in the Analytic Tradition 114: 81-86Woollard F (2012).    The Doctrine of Doing and Allowing I: Analysis of the Doing ⁄Allowing Distinction.   Philosophy Compass 7: 448–458 Woollard, F and Howard-Snyder, F.  2021.  Doing and Allowing Harm.  The Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy (Fall 2021 edition), Edward N Zalta (ed) URL = https://plato.stanford.edu/fall2021/entries/doing-allowing/   Accessed 15th January 2024.  Ethics Untangled is produced by the IDEA Ethics Centre at the University of Leeds.Twitter: @EthicsUntangledFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ideacetlLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/idea-ethics-centre/

This video is a response to a recent video by Christopher Cloos at Christian Philosophy Academy. Chris' Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja9dldyWQwE&t=1445s In his video, Cloos presents an objection to Schellenberg's divine hiddenness argument from a recent essay by Daniel Howard-Snyder which argues that, possibly, God may hide from people to attain a 'better start' to a relationship with them even while being perfectly loving. I first trace the dialectic between Daniel Howard-Snyder and J.L. Schellenberg before examining Howard-Snyder's most recent attempt to undermine Schellenberg's argument. I conclude that Howard-Snyder's most recent reply fails to undermine Schellenberg's argument. Web - https://www.realatheology.com Twitter - https://twitter.com/RealAtheology

It was only by sheer grit and a little bit of luck that Steve Snyder's father, Howard, managed to return from Europe alive, as he and his crew had been shot down over Belgium. “Shot Down” tells the story of the crew of the “Susan Ruth”, a WWII B-17 shot down on Feb. 8, 1944 over the French/Belgium Border. The name was given to the aircraft by Pilot Howard Snyder in honor of his young daughter. Steve Snyder, Howard's son, has written a meticulously researched and detailed book that describes the lives of the crew members and their harrowing months in hiding from German forces. The book also tells the stories of the brave Belgian citizens who risked all to keep the American crew members safe. Steve had a great deal of material to work with in putting together Shot Down. He had diaries and correspondence from the crew members as well as interviews with his father Howard before he died. There were also some surprises. He was able to get in contact with the German aviator who was one of the pilots that shot down his father's plane. (Both German fighters were also shot down by the B-17 in that action.) A random Facebook message also put him in touch with the granddaughter of one of the Belgian rescuers. Howard Snyder eventually got tired of hiding all the time and not being able to make the arduous escape journey through Spain. Because he had some infantry training before going to pilot school he decided to join The Maquis – a resistance fighter group. This was very unusual in the history of WWII. Of the 10 member crew of the Susan Ruth, only five were eventually able to return home. Two crewmembers were killed in the attack and three were captured and executed by the Germans – a war crime. Many of the other five families only knew that their loved ones were missing in action until they received telegrams that they were safe. TAKEAWAY: It was particularly impactful to talk with Steve while sitting a mere 20 feet away from the B-17 “I'll Be Around” on display at the 390th Memorial Museum in Tucson, AZ.

What a long strange long trip it's been to get to this show! The guests, the laughs, the games, and just in general GREAT TIMES they've shared while talking into microphones! FIRST, Little Matt chose the time the guys had the Mental Health Comedian, Frank King, in the Lounge! Frank was getting off a cruise ship that had struggled to find a port that would let the cruisers off the boat to GO HOME! Right at the start of the COVID-era, Frank was trying to just get home, and he joined WHILE ON THE SHUTTLE ON THE WAY TO THE AIRPORT, and that was crazy in and of itself, but then the other passengers decided they would become part of the show! Frank put an end to that! The guys also really appreciated Frank telling his story and why it was so important to share! Mental health is a serious topic, and he attacks it with some laughs!Richey then got to share his favorite moment which was when a writer for the Austin-American Statesman & Hookemhorns.com, Kirk Bohls joined the Lounge in the EARLY days! Kirk was a fantastic storyteller, and the guys enjoyed listening to the story Kirk shared about legendary coach Daryl Royal, and a friend! The guys talked about Kirk's ability to tell stories in such a way that was soothing yet entertaining! They want to have Kirk back on!Next, the guys talked about the time that author Steve Snyder joined Sam & Little Matt! This was a favorite because of the story he told! He wrote "Shot Down: The Story of Howard Snyder and the Crew of the B17 Susan Ruth," and the guys listened to the story of Howard (Steve's dad) being shot down and crashing in Nazi-controlled Belgium. WHAT A STORY! Richey had to leave minutes before this one and was not happy about it!THEN, Sam talked about HIS favorite thing from the past shows. He didn't have a guest in mind, but rather a small portion of the "closing routine" the guys used to do at the end of the show! While talking about the Lounge email address, Richey and he started talking about a microwavable "treat" and an alternative way to prepare them! Sam can't hold back the laughs, even to this day! He also sheds some light on why he was preparing them the way he proposed, and the other two decided he was actually saving time!LAST, the guys talk about a segment that they all love to do... LET'S CHAT! It started named something else, do you know the original name of the Let's Chat! segment? The guys listen to that original version, and then part of one that led to the guys finding one of their close Lounge friends, the Mayor of Uranus! Little Matt then surprises the other two with an impromptu Let's Chat! This show was chock full of all sorts of things! You will love going back and hearing things you might've forgotten or didn't know the guys had done! You can also hear the difference in audio quality over time from the beginning to now! SO, sit back, relax, & enjoy the trip back through the Lounge! #grabalisten

It became his passion, and after 4.5 years of dedicated research, resulted in his book, Shot Down.  An Amazon #1 Best Seller and recipient of more than 25 national book awards, Shot Down is set within the framework of World War II in Europe and recounts the dramatic experiences of each member of a ten man B-17 bomber crew after their plane, piloted by Author Steve Snyder's father, was knocked out of the sky by German fighters over the French/Belgium border on February 8,1944.  Some men died. Some were captured and became prisoners of war.  Some men evaded capture and were missing in action for months before making it back to England. Their individual stories and those of the courageous Belgian people who risked their lives to help them are all different and remarkable.  Steve is a member of numerous World War II organizations and past President of the 306th Bomb Group Historical Association. An Amazon #1 Best Seller and recipient of more than 25 national book awards, SHOT DOWN is set within the framework of World War II in Europe and recounts the dramatic experiences of each member of a ten man B-17 bomber crew after their plane, piloted by author Steve Snyder’s father, was knocked out of the sky by German fighters over the French/Belgium border on February 8, 1944. Some men died. Some were captured and became prisoners of war. Some men evaded capture and were missing in action for months before making it back to England. Their individual stories and those of the courageous Belgian people who risked their lives to help them are all different and are all remarkable. Even before the dramatic battle in the air and the subsequent harrowing events on the ground, the story is informative, insightful, and captivating. Prior to the fateful event, the book covers the crew's training, their journey to England, what life was like on base as well as in London and the English countryside, and the perils of the 8th Air Force flying combat missions over occupied Europe and Germany. Through personal letters, oral and written accounts, declassified military documents, and interviews – all from people who took part in the events that happened over 70 years ago (even the German Luftwaffe pilot who shot down the Susan Ruth) - the stories come alive. Adding to the feeling of "being there", are more than 200 time period photographs interspersed throughout the book. To add background and context, many historical facts and anecdotes about and surrounding World War II are entwined throughout the book so that the reader has a feel for and understanding of what was occurring on a broader scale. SHOT DOWN is an account about brave individuals, featuring pilot Howard Snyder, set within the compelling events of the greatest conflict in world history. In 1989, a memorial to the crew of the Susan Ruth was dedicated at Macquenoise, Belgium and every year celebrations are held to honor and remember the men who are now all gone but not forgotten. It is our duty to remember. For the second straight week, the guys got learned! Author Steve Snyder came to hang out in the Lounge! Steve wrote, "Shot Down: the true story of pilot Howard Snyder and the crew of the B-17 Susan Ruth." What an amazing journey Steve took us on during his time with the guys! His father, Howard, was the namesake of the title of the book! Steve tells us about how he came to writing the book, and all of the people he talked to during his research, INCLUDING THE MAN WHO SHOT HIS FATHER'S PLANE DOWN! When was it that his father finally told Steve about the time he spent in Belgium? He also explains the message the book is intended to send, and the most dangerous job, in WWII. The guys sat and listened in amazement as Steve told about his father making his way to safety, from Occupied Belgium. Steve then ventured into the world of sports and talked about his love for UCLA basketball, and the first-ever game at the famous Pauley Pavilion, on the campus of UCLA. The two-time National Champions were upset in that game... by a VERY unexpected opponent! Steve was there! Why are the Rams thinking about changing their logo?! Steve shares his thoughts! What a show! The guys introduce a new game! "Over, Under or PUSH!" makes its debut, and we think it's safe to say, it's got potential! Richey had to miss this episode, but Brice sat in and was a solid C+! HAHA! What else do we talk about? Well... THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION........ Meet Steve SnyderI was born in Pasadena, California and went through the San Marino school system. First attending the University of California at Santa Barbara, I then transferred to UCLA where I earned a B.A. degree in Economics. After graduating, I settled in Seal Beach, California where I still live today with my wife, Glenda and where we raised three sons, Doug, Devin, and Clayton. Glenda and I are members of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Huntington Beach, California and attend regularly. After college, I worked various jobs until being employed by California Vision Service (CVS) in 1973. First working as a sales representative in Southern California and Southern Nevada, I soon received a promotion to Regional Sales Manager. A few years later, the company changed its name to Vision Service Plan (VSP), and I became National Accounts Vice-President and then Eastern Division Vice President. For the majority of my career at VSP, I traveled extensively throughout the U.S. becoming a million mile flyer on United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines.Retiring from VSP in 2009 after 36 years in national sales and sales management, I began my quest to know everything possible about the World War II experiences of my father, pilot Howard Snyder, and his crew of the B-17 Susan Ruth which was named after my oldest sister. Gradually, it became my passion and resulted in this book. I belong to numerous World War II associations and am on the Board of Directors of the 306th Bomb Group Association.Glenda and I have a second home in Sedona, Arizona where we spend a considerable amount of time. I am an avid gardener, primarily in Seal Beach where our yard is literally a tropical botanical garden with nearly 100 palm trees planted in the ground. History is such a fascinating topic! I’m absolutely sure of it after my conversation with Steve Snyder. We discussed his book “Shot Down”, World War 2 legacy, and the inspirational life story of his father. Howard Snyder went MIA during World War II when he was flying over French/Belgium border. “Shot Down” focuses on his experience as he and his crew members were trying to survive in a foreign occupied country. This is the story of resilience, bravery, and love. This story does more than just documents the events in Belgium. It uncovers the relationship with the family back at home. After all, Howard had a child at home, and his wife was pregnant again. The book features a number of love letters between Steve’s mother and father, and that sentiment gives the book a whole different dimension. It’s easy for us, civilians, to read war stories and feel detached. X went to Y country for Z reason, this and that happened. But put yourself in the shoes of this family that was affected by the war: the breadwinner of the family was drafted into the war on foreign land. Letters were the only form of communication, and one had to wait weeks to hear from the loved ones. And worse of all, there were no guarantees that a new letter would ever arrive. How chilling is that? Those were the times unlike now. Steve and I chatted about the difference technology makes in communication and how it has different value now that it is abundant. There are 2 sides to each coin, right? Interview with author Steve Snyder For the first time, the full and complete story of the B-17 Flying Fortress Susan Ruth is shared in unbelievable detail. Author Steve Snyder's story of his father, Lieutenant Howard Snyder, and the Susan Ruth crew, provides in-depth details about many aspects of World War II few understand or know about. Shot Down was created from the vast number of letters and journals of Howard Snyder; diaries of men and women on the ground who rescued, sheltered and hid the crew; and interviews conducted by historians. Centered around the 306th Bomb Group in Thurleigh, England, it is informative, insightful and captivating. For most, 70 years is a long time ago. World War II fades in importance as each year goes by. Shot Down moves history out of the footnotes into reality, keeping the stories of real people alive as they experience being shot down. You are there, almost holding your breath as Lt. Snyder gets his crew out of his B-17 when bailing out over Nazi occupied Europe. SHOT DOWN has received 16 national book awards.
