Overview: Our big news this episode is that, sadly, we will be taking a break from Yondercast for the indefinite future. We get into the reasons for this on the show, but know that we will miss all of you and hope to come back as soon as possible! Other than that one sad note, we had a blast recording this episode. We discuss some great video games and board games, recommend a few top notch TV shows, and melt Josh's brain with Contronyms. It has been a while coming, but we finally talk about the new trailer for Evil Dead Rise. We are all huge fans of the franchise and unsurprisingly very excited to see what direction it is going in. We talk about the creepy trailer and what we liked about it and what has us worried. There is some interesting genre fair coming at the end of January. This leads to conversations about UFO sightings we had as children and faith based movies we were tricked into watching. We also talk about Nicholas Cage's surprising history with the Left Behind franchise and the interesting decision from Paramount+ to bring audiences a no longer Teen Wolf movie. The first half of 2022 was a goldmine as it seemed like we were watching an indie or genre gem each week. Things seem to slow down during the second half of the year, but it also included some of the best stuff we saw. We do things a little different this year and start off with some surprises before talking about the stuff we all knew we were going to say.Our discussion includes a movie with an ending so distressing that two hosts refused to recognize the film as one of the best of the year because of it. Another film riled one of us due to its outspoken protagonist. We also managed to include two (!) movies with ties to El Paso, talk about career performances, and even get a little Weird.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Our first Special Edition of 2023 is sandwiched between our two recaps of last year. It makes perfect sense as we have been anticipating this movie for months. The first trailer was over the top and each one since has gotten sillier. By the time M3gan came around, we knew it was going to be one of the worst movies we saw this year or one of the best.On the surface, the first big horror release of this year is not telling a new story. It is another addition to creepy doll sub-genre that has been around for decades. But M3gan has felt a little different from the beginning. It is clearly aimed at the younger generation and seems to have gone all in on style over substance. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can negatively impact an otherwise good film.As it turns out, there is much more to M3gan than the trailers let on. There is a deep story here with some serious themes. We talk about how well it tackled its subject matter and whether audiences will be disappointed. We also discuss the target audience and who will get the most out of it.As easy a streaming has made our lives, there is nothing like a great movie theater experience. We talk about the one we had when we watched M3gan and why it made the movie that much better. From the snappy one liners of the eponymous doll to some surprising moments, the right crowd can enhance the experience. What is the future of M3gan? Based on the reaction, there is definitely going to be a sequel, but how will people respond? Was this just a one and done phenomenon or is M3gan the first horror icon for this generation? Is there room for more stories or did they do all they can in their first movie?Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Even as viewing habits have changed, a great movie poster will always stand out. The latest poster for Scream VI is creative and fun while also looking like very little effort was put into it. We also talk about any hidden meanings in the poster. This past week also saw the death of exploitation legend Ruggero Deodato. Best known for the infamous Cannibal Holocaust, he mark on genre cinema will last forever. Before we discuss our least favorite movies of the year, a bit of a disclaimer. We love indie cinema and think people should make an effort to watch more. It is easier now than ever before to take a chance on a filmmaker you have never heard of. That being said, even when people put their best foot forward, it does not mean they will always avoid stepping in crap. Our least favorite films of the year are from around the world. Horror, science fiction, and even a documentary make the list. We talk about awful protagonists and movies that can ruin an entire weekend. There are movies that are visually impressive and stores that are tone deaf. We even talk about a pair of horror icons. All this, plus Genre of the Future. This week it is all about hatchet wielding hitchhikers, lot lizards, and dancing robots.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. For many, M. Night Shyamalan lost any goodwill built from his early career a long time ago. We talk about his latest movie and how even though it has an intriguing trailer and awesome poster, it is not enough to bring in some people. This leads to a talk of the awful ending of Old (SPOILER WARNING) and why Knock at the Cabin is destined for the same fate.Another director whose career has been spent polarizing audiences is James Cameron. We discuss the shocking success of Avatar: The Way of the Water (we know, it should not be a surprise) and why it bothers us. Will we finally break down and watch the three hour spectacle?Dinner in America began its festival run two years ago. At the time, it was meant with critical praise. Audiences also loved the story about two outsiders who meet each other. Despite the all around goodwill, the indie film did not find a streaming home or get a theatrical release.Until this year. But why do we think you should check it out? Set in Midwest America in the 1990s, the movie is about a punk rocker who meets a socially awkward girl. Things start off rocky until the two inevitably find they have a lot more in common than they thought. It is entirely predictable, but two of the most lovable characters of the year make this a must watch. The Menu is one of the darkest, funniest, and best acted films of the year. It targets a niche crowd, but has been able to surpass expectations thanks to strong word of mouth. We talk about its great story and atmosphere, its use of its ensemble cast, and its in your face writings.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. The end of the year is right around the corner and if you guessed there would not be much movie news, you would be mostly correct. Still, there was some surprising news regarding deceptive trailers and the legal recourse audiences now have. We also show off our ignorance of the Insidious franchise and talk Barbie.Last week, cinema lost one of its most creative voices in Angelo Badalamenti. We wanted to remember him by covering one of the many films he scored. Unfortunately, we picked 2005's Dark Water. The music is not bad, but is not a good example of Badalamenti's talent. The movie stars Jennifer Connelly and has John C. Reilly and Tim Roth. It will not come as a surprise to anyone that the acting is top notch. As for the actual plot? We talk about missed opportunities, a busy story in which nothing really seems to happen, and try to figure out what exactly dark water is.Last week, we reviewed a movie that Regina felt did not have a Christmas feel to it. This week, we cover a film that not only has the word Christmas in the title -twice! - there is also a killer robotic Santa Claus. As awesome as that is, it also includes some of the most obnoxious characters of the year. Was the yuletide violence enough to overcome its annoying protagonists? Not only does the end of December have some new releases, it has some of the most interesting ones of the year!Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Here we are for episode 598! Bettina and Paul drag Toppie into their investigations to locate the box that August brought back when he recently took a secretive trip away! There are many mysteries surrounding his disappearance in the first half of 2020 - and maybe the answers to some of them reside within that box; if only we can lay our hands on it! We also have some Sutton Park clips from the summer of 1998 which follow on from our last set in SLP episode 595. Thank you to Toppie for his help recording this edition! In our next show, #599 another of our regulars is going through a health crisis - this time it is Yeti Uncle John who was recently hit on the head by an apple and is now apparently suffering from fructophobia. What can be done to help him? Email us at shyyeti@yahoo.co.uk if you have any comments - you can even send me a sound-file and I'll include it. The music is by Shy Yeti, Muffleyontour, FesliyanStudios.com and Luca. Sound effects by Paul C and Soundbible. All other content is Copyright Paul Chandler, 2022. Episode 598 was recorded between the 17th September and the 1st October 2022. Our Sutton Park clips are from #2192 and 2193 from early June 1998. The Toppie chat this time was recorded on the 9th April 2022, the other Toppie scenes on the 17th September 2022. There is also a new Muffleyontour composition, FORCEFIELD around the 43 minute mark. Please note: The scenes where Paul and Toppie are searching may be a little fuzzier than usual due to them having to tip-toe about quietly and look under beds; this may have slightly affected the quality of their recording.
Jenna Ortega has been all over the place since Wednesday debuted on Netflix. Now was probably the best time to drop a teaser for the next installment in the Scream franchise. We also talk about our memories of one of the greatest film composers of all time. Angelo Badalamenti may be best known for his work with David Lynch, but he worked on a number of projects, including working with David Bowie and composing the opening theme for the 1992 Summer Olympics.Arthouse horror is difficult to define. Everyone will give you a different answer. Making it harder to pin down what kind of movies fall in the category is the wide range of examples people will give. From the works of Lynch to grounded fare like The Witch, to over the top giallo, we all have our own idea of what art horror is. (It is definitely not "elevated horror".)A Wounded Fawn literally begins in the art world with talks of Greek mythology and high dollar bidding. This is not what makes it art horror, however. Its focus on characters and abstract storytelling may cause some to feel that it is, however. The latest film from Travis Stevens also embraces horror tropes to provide a look that is familiar and original at the same time.Toxic masculinity is a theme addressed in many movies today. A Wounded Fawn does so in a way that promotes talk without undermining the issue. This is due to the strong performances of the cast and excellent writing that tells an unconventional, but satisfying story. As scary as Christmas horror can be, there is usually a sense of fun that comes with it. The Leech certainly has a degree of fun with its ridiculous characters and laugh out loud moments. The jokes come fast and furious in a holiday horror movie that is about finding the true meaning of Christmas. And then it gets very dark. Along with being a movie about the holidays, it is a character study that follows a person's gradual descent. The Leech was so effective in its storytelling that we had completely differing opinions on the context of the film, but still came to the same conclusion.Plus, Genre of the Future.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. As the year comes to an end, there is little in the way of movie news. This comes us the chance to talk about some of the films we are looking forward to seeing next year. This includes a few things based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, a Child's Play movie for the younger generation, and the next installment in the Evil Dead franchise. Plus, we lose interest in a movie about a drugged up bear.Umma seems like it is going to be a movie that deals with generational trauma, mother-daughter relationships, and Korean folklore. It barely does the first two while paying lip service to the third. The cast all do a fantastic job, but is it enough to save a story that seems to have no interest in engaging the audience? We have reviewed a few movies this year that have started off one way before taking a dramatic turn and becoming something else. None of them have done a particularly good job at it. NR. 10 is the latest to attempt it. The plot follows Gunter, a man who was orphaned as a child. One day, a man whispers something in his ear and changes Gunter's life. This type of setup has been used for decades in cinema, and can often be a fun story filled with mystery and shocking revelations. Initially, it works here, as the twisting narrative involves a number of not quite shady characters living mundane lives. There is intrigue and betrayal and you never know what is going to happen next. That is certainly the case with the twist here as there is no way anyone can seeing it coming. It has no connection to the rest of the movie. As a matter of fact the rest of NR. 10 does not even factor into anything in the third act. It definitely caught us off-guard, but did we enjoy it?Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. We are 200 episodes in and we start by looking at one of the most important directors in genre cinema. Steven Spielberg may not be the first director that comes to mind when it comes to indie or genre films, but if it were not for Jaws, the entire landscape of film would look different. Despite his pedigree, his movies are not doing as well as they used to? Are we surprised?Spielberg's far-reaching influence is felt strongly in the first movie we cover this week. Tintorera from 1977 claims to be about a killer shark, but it would be more accurate to call it an orgy movie that happens to have a shark in it. The smell of baby oil fills the air as we talk about possibly the most perverted tiger shark ever, history's most well adjusted throuple, and some unironically well done underwater scenes. We also take a trip to Rancho Deluxe with Jeff Daniels and Sam Watterson. This 1975 movie is about a pair of cattle rustlers who come up with a scheme that will earn them a big score. The film came out during an interesting time. Westerns were on the decline but the hysteria surrounding truck drivers had yet to hit America. Rancho Deluxe does not always seem to know what it wants to be, but it also does not care. This leads to a grounded story that has some amazing moments of over the top acting, a great performance from Harry Dean Stanton, and Jimmy Buffett playing one of the best songs of his career. Rancho Deluxe is about independence, not taking things too seriously, and just living your life. Our 200th episode also includes an interview with filmmakers Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson. The two are known for some of the most mind-bending genre films of the past decade. They talk about their latest movie, Something in the Dirt, shooting in Los Angeles, and non-traditional characters.
