Is the first week of November the slowest time of the movie year? It is if you are a genre fan. We do have a little bit of news. Osgood Perkins excites us while John Carpenter disappoints us. There is also an important change to your Halloween viewing schedule. Plus, a new horror streaming channel that seems to be catering to fans.Before the first episode premiered, Welcome to Derry had taken us on a wild ride. When we first heard about it, we were incredibly excited. There are so many excellent stories in the sourced material that would make for great television. And who knows what original ideas the writers could come up with?Then we saw the first trailer.We went into the show fearing the worst. Welcome to Derry may not have been as bad as we feared, but it definitely was not very good. From bad CGI to completely ignoring what the source material is about, we talk about our (many) gripes. Even the things that were done right had a ring or wrong around them.Hell House LLC was a straightforward found footage horror movie. It did not do anything revolutionary, but it was a good time. Its sequels have expanded on the lore in ways that were not needed. The latest installment puts on full display how the original movie was never intended to be a series.Hell House LLC: Lineage is not for newcomers. It is not for casual fans. It is not even for people who have seen all of the installments and enjoyed them. This movie is strictly for those who know the series in and out. You need to have an intimate working knowledge of these movies to get anything out of the latest one. But at least the change from first person to traditional narrative was a good idea. Right? How do we talk about the marketing of movies so much? Probably because it often feels uninspired. Character posters all look alike, trailers give away everything, and press junkets seem to be more about looking for viral moments. There have been some noticeable exceptions, but we think we have found the one that is the best of them all. Plus, the latest comedic talent to try their hand at horror.We love exploitation flicks, and with so many streaming channels, they are fairly easy to find. Tubi has done a magnificent job, providing us with some absolute gems. Bruno Mattei is an exploitation master who has one everything from Nazisploitation, to women in prison movies, to one of the greatest Jaws rip offs of all time.He also gave us Rats: Night of Terror.This is another one of those Italian exploitation movies that takes place in a dystopian future with lots of motorcycles, crazy outfits, an lots of gore. The effects are disgusting, the shallow characters draw you in, an the rats are frightening. It is fun stuff, if a little standard. Then you witness one of the greatest endings you will ever see.The Salem Chronicles also keeps things familiar. Its says it is a modern twist on the Salem witch trials, but there is nothing new to see here. (There is also nothing on the poster that has anything to do with the film.) It would be a fine, it derivative, watch if the crew cared about it. This is a poorly done mess that will make you laugh without ever being fun. Before we get to the scary stuff we discuss a cool double feature coming in November. It's just a question of whether our bodies could hold up to it. We then talk about a horror legend who is surprisingly overlooked. Someone who deserves a biopic and may possibly be getting one soon.Low budget horror is supposed to be gross and fun. Especially when you have a title like The Weedhacker Massacre. Anything besides the laughs and gore are a bonus. The Weedhacker Massacre attempts at humor rarely work. And it has little in the way of gore. This means it has to focus on story and acting. It goes about as well as expected.Other is saved by its amazing lead performance. This includes a main character who gives you plenty of reason to get behind her but does everything to push you away. It is one of the strangest written characters we have ever seen. The film is also strange. It is tense and scary but not noticeably so. It has an interesting premise, but nothing stands out. It also has a poorly done twist and a hilarious reveal. Quentin Tarantino has been releasing movies since we were teenagers, so he holds a special place for us. This is especially true of the Kill Bill movies since we were a little older, plus they became a part of mainstream culture. Watching The Whole Bloody Affair is a tall order, however. The news about Scary Movie 6 has us much more excited.After watching the trailer for Ash, it is hard not to wonder if they used all the good shots for it. After seeing the actual movie, you realized that they could have picked any part of the film and it would have looked great. It also features some top notch performances and an engaging mystery.So why do so many people hate it? It probably has to do with the climax, which ruins all the good will Ash had built up. The over the top nature is subjective and some people will enjoy it. But its decision to completely rip off Alien is hard to ignore.Good Boy does not hide the fact that it is a gimmick. It is a haunted house story in which its main character is a dog. But not only is Indy the main character, he is pretty much the only one. The story and camera are completely different focused on him.Does it move past this and become something that audiences can become attached to? Well, if you have ever had a pet, you will love Good Boy. And if you have not had one, it will make you want to get one. Oh yeah. Poirot gets philosophical as Caroline's theories continue to fly as to Roger's untimely death. We also revisit our conversation about how comedians have positively affected horror. Plus, bad pedophiles vs good ones.We like when PR companies go the extra mile and the marketing for Bone Lake has been inspired. From suggestively placing the R rating to some cool posters, the film's promotion has been eye-catching. The over the top opening adds to this with lots of nudity and a gruesome kill.When it turns things down, it is to an almost shocking degree that may cause people to turn out. Which is a shame, since Bone Lake becomes an excellent psychological thriller that does an excellent job of toying with audience expectations. It also boasts one of the strongest performances of the year.Since returning in 2021, the V/H/S series has put out some great releases. They have taken things to he past along with trying out new things like sci-fi horror. This year the franchise tackles something that John Carpenter was never able to do. V/H/S Halloween sees the found footage anthology turn its eye towards a particular holiday in October.There have been some fun segments, but this is the most fun V/H/S has been as an overall product in years. It perfectly captures the Halloween spirit and presents stories that range from scary to funny. And all of them are gross. This is one of the movies that will become a regular tradition.But there is a major caveat. V/H/S Halloween also has the darkest segment in the history of the franchise. It will be a polarizing watch that many people may skip. Others will think it is great extreme horror. One thing is for sure; the segment is one of the best seen in the V/H/S series, but it feels out of place in this year's edition. During our Weapons special edition we discussed a possible sequel. It turns out we were not far off the mark. We are surprisingly uninterested, but we think we may have a good reason. We also talk about an interesting option for those you enjoy doing 31 Days of Halloween.The 1980s were arguably the Golden Era of cheesy B-horror movies. There was so much good stuff to come out of the decade. Many of these straight to video offerings became cult classics and shaped the future horror community. By the time the 1990s rolled around it seemed like there was nothing new to add.Blood Hook from 1986 is a great example. Slashers were still all the rage, and this movie includes many familiar tropes. But its killer is completely unique. The villain is a fisherman. Not a guy wearing a mask and carrying a hook. A straight up fisher with a hook, line, and sinker. And yes, he does reel in his victims.When we talked about the trailer for Night of the Reaper last week we were impressed. We were not quite sure what the movie was about, but it had an aesthetic that appealed to us. It looked like a throwback to 80s slashers, which is exactly how it starts. It is one of the best openings we have seen all year.Unfortunately, everything goes off the rails from there. The story goes in odd directions, working with two different plots. This ends up watering both down and makes for a very tedious watch. It feels like two separate movies were forced together. We start with a look at this weekend's box office. We start with the power of anime, before moving on to the Warrens. But the main topic is Stephen King. The renowned author is no stranger to box office flops. So why is everyone blaming the performance of The Long Walk recent comments he made. It is not like he has every been quiet about his political views? Also, who is responsible for more Insidious sequels?We have some some crazy things on our humble little podcast. There have been plenty of films that have given zero fucks about who they offend and what lines they cross. But we have never seen anything like 2006's Werewolf in a Women's Prison. For those thinking the title is a metaphor for a much deeper story, you will be disappointed. This is very much a case of what you see is what you get.And what you see is a lot of naked women. How much? For the first time, it was enough for one of us to say it was too much. Not on any moral grounds; it was just more bare breasts than a person wants to see in one movie. Between all the bare flesh, there are some awesome kills, questionable music choices, a werewolf that is simultaneously cool and awful looking, and Patton Oswalt's wife.It has been a rough year for Blumhouse. It once seemed like they could release anything and people would go see it. This year has been one box office failure after another, including this week's feature presentation, Drop. The premise is a neat one. A woman on a blind date starts receiving mysterious air drops that command her to do horrible things or in son will die. The execution, not so much.It is a message movie that makes its message unimportant, a character study that leaves you not caring about its main character, and a thriller that is not so thrilling. There are some odd directorial choices, with some that are really good. But the ones that do not land make the movie look cheap. And the ending brings closure, but is not satisfying. A few months back, Rian Johnson said he hopes the next Knives Out movie is in theaters for as long as possible. Netflix released that number this week and it probably is not what Johnson was hoping for. The Long Walk comes out this month and they have a real cool marketing idea. It is too bad that it is a little too much for public consumption.Your Host has one of those guilty pleasure premises that is impossible to resist. Four friends go to sleep (not by choice) and wake up to find themselves chained to a wall. A mysterious person stands in front of them and lets them know they are about to play a game for their lives. What follows is a series of deadly challenges in which it becomes clear there can only be one winner.There is not much more to it than that. It gets gory, eyes get stabbed, people die. And then after about an hour of this, Your Host decides it is time to deliver a message. And it is not just any old statement. They tackle one of the biggies. It is one of the clumsiest and most confusing things we have seen this year.Until Dawn is an awesome video game. It is scary, engaging, and most importantly, fun. We have been interested in seeing the adaptation. And unlike a lot of other gamers, we were not turned away from the fact it tells an original story. If anything, that makes it even more attractive.When we say “original story”, we do not mean it does things never done before. As a matter of fact, one of the things Until Dawn does is play with familiar horror tropes. It is a mixed bag that does a lot more right than wrong. Highlander is a weird franchise. It seemed like a big deal in the 80s. Big enough to warrant a couple of sequels and a TV series that lasted a few seasons. It also has one of the most quotable lines in cinema history. Yet, it is also incredibly underrated. Which makes some sense considering all that came out of that decade. We also talk about directors who have their heads up their asses.Arnold Schwarzenegger – whose credits include Junior and The Expendables 3 – has called Red Sonja the worst film he has ever made. That is a matter of personal opinion, but there is no denying the Brigette Nielsen vehicle is pretty bad. Add in the fact that this adaptation has been languishing in developmental hell for over a decade, and it seems like a huge risk.The 2025 version of Red Sonja manages to work because it knows its audience. It is a straightforward sword and sorcery flick that is sexy enough to play to that audience, but modern enough to not exploit Matilda Lutz. The performances are fantastic and the production looks great. There are some missteps along the way, but it is a very good Red Sonja adaptation.How do you make a re-imagining for The Toxic Avenger? The original idea was to go the family friendly route? But is that what fans really want to see? You also don't want to go the make jokes out of sexually assaulting a blind woman direction either since nobody wants to see that. SPOILER ALERT!!! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITIONS WE HAVE A LOT TO SAY AND SAY IT ALLHorror movies have ramped up their marketing efforts in recent years. Weapons is the latest example. The movie created a website, released two hour security cam footage, along with traditional tactics like an awesome poster and excellent trailer. The end result? It exceeded box office expectations.Where does Zach Cregger stand among current horror directors? There is a very strong argument that he is the best at mixing horror and humor. And this includes the Winters and Osgood Perkins. Along with being satisfying, the ending of Weapons is one of the funniest of the year.The major twist comes well before the final moments. How much people enjoy the twist will also determine how much they like the film. More so than any other movie in recent memory. It will be the point of return for everyone who watches it. For some, Weapons will not be able to do any wrong; for others it will be a complete turnoff.Non-linear storytelling is very tricky to pull off. Not only can it disorient the audience, but it can open things up to plot holes. We talk about one possible issue with Weapons and another nitpick. We also debate how effectively Weapons told its story.Whatever a person's final opinion on Weapons, there is no denying the amazing performances. There has been a shift the past few years, but horror tends to get ignored around awards season. It may not end up getting nominated for anything, but it would be surprising if some names from Cregger's release are not thrown around. One character will definitely be an inspiration for Halloween.What does the success of another original movie IP mean for horror movies in the future? Obviously, franchises and Stephen King adaptations are not going to end; they are the lifeblood of the genre. But will studios be willing to take more risks on new properties?
