Aside from Art the Clown, what has Damian Leone contributed to horror? We also come dangerously close to gatekeeping while we discuss what extreme horror is. Plus a discussion on the 28 Years franchise somehow leads to a talk about The Bride. We spend a good amount of time talking about Find Your Friends. About 98% of it is spent on the film's writing. It does not take long to realize this is not a good thing. There have been plenty of movies that have led to a discussion about the writing. There has been nothing like this one. The movie clearly deals with sensitive subjects. But it does it in a way that downplays the circumstances, the victim, and its heady themes. It is so bad that we have to constantly reiterate how we are not shitty men. (Who knows? Maybe we are. But that's a different matter.) How bad was the writing for Find Your Friends? So much so that we were constantly filing in story beats to make it make sense to us. And even then, we were still frustrated by what we had seen. This movie had all the ingredients to tell a powerful story about how women are treated. It instead was content to erratically work towards its admittedly wild finale. Horror has always managed to do well at the box office. The way of thinking has always been since the movies are so cheap to make, it is easy to profit of of them. This year has been especially good, with indie horror doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It is clear there is a lesson to learn from this, but will Hollywood learn the right one. (Spoiler alert: no.) Zack Snyder is one of the most polarizing directors around today. That takes in a lot of territory since pretty much everything fits that description nowadays. We talk about his latest project and why we are interested in it. Does this make us Snyderbros? Chum does not reinvent the wheel, but it does not have to. It is a simple revenge story filled with some of the best shark attacks we have ever seen on this show. We talk about the use of AI and how less can sometimes be more. A great sharksploitation movie is more than just a kick ass shark, however. It is not a question of how poor the writing in Chum is; the question is does it ruin all the good the rest of the movie does. Over the years, we have seen and discussed how horror has become more acceptable in the mainstream. This week we talk about two of the most striking examples of this. One is interesting while the other is just straight up weird. But both have us interested. The idea of a nun who has lost her faith is not strange for an exorcism movie. Having the first introduction of said nun has her completely nude and coked up after a threesome is a little different. After showing off this incredibly buff nun, the awesomely titled Speed Demon takes off from there. The film is an example of less being more. It does not reinvent the wheel and tells the simple story of a person trying to overcome their personal demons in order to defeat a literal one. And it works thanks to its setting and quick pace. But it is in the closing moments that Speed Demon truly shines. In a whirlwind of revelations, the most powerful people in the world become entrenched in Sister Lu's world. It also sets up the promise of what could be an exciting franchise. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Obsession has become one of the biggest and most talked about movies in America. So much so that it has actually been the number one movie at the box office during the week. Obviously, this will change over the holiday weekend, but it is still nice to see it doing so well. We also talk about what the future holds for it. It seems like we have been talking about Crystal Lake for years. And every once in a while, we have a little bit more information to discuss. This time we actually have a release date for the Friday the 13th spinoff. And it is just around the corner. Zombie apocalypse movies are a staple of horror. They can do a lot by doing a little. To break away from the formula, there have been a number of movies in the sub-genre that have tried to do more. This Is Not a Test tries to bring a depth rarely seen in zombie films. This ends up ruining the whole thing. At the very least, you would figure that people who like these types of films would enjoy it. The opening certainly gives that impression. After all, it is a generic zombie movie. Then you realize that there is a big piece missing from what is otherwise a ho-hum release. We like Sophie Thatcher and have enjoyed the works of Jennifer Kent. The idea of the two of them teaming up has us excited. Especially when it is set in a dystopian world. And it is based on a short story written for the pulp magazines of yesteryear. By a woman posing as a man. Good Boy was one of our favorite movies from last year. There is no arguing the hype surrounding it was based on its gimmick, however. Director Ben Leonberg's next movie is also very gimmicky. (No Indy, unfortunately.) We also talk about the next installment of the Blair Witch franchise and some of our concerns. Our first movie from South Africa may sound familiar. It is about a killer who preys on people's fears and wears black gloves with razor blades. But there is a reason that no one says Wes Craven stole the idea for A Nightmare on Elm Street. Quite simply, there is nothing like 1979's The Demon. This is probably for the best since the movie makes absolutely no sense. There is a soldier with ESP, a love story, an unresolved kidnapping, lots of quiet nudity, and no ending. Naturally, one of us was not impressed. So why did one of us give it the highest recommendation? Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. A few weeks back we wondered how well Michael would fare at the box office. There is so much to his legacy that we truly had no idea. Two weeks later, we have a good idea. It also leads to a discussion about how the media, especially movie critics, really suck. It took one of us a second viewing to truly appreciate it, but we both loved Longlegs. It is moody, well acted, and just all around frightening. Unsurprisingly, we are very excited to see the sequel. Surprisingly, that is going to be longer than expected. Hokum was recently released and will probably end up being on the list for one of the best horror movies of the year. Based on his output, it seems like director Damian McCarthy has a promising future in horror. At least we thought that until The Python Hunt did not have to do much. The true story is centered around an annual competition in Florida about the hunting and killing of invasive pythons in the Everglades. This means you will get a cool setting, conflict, and eccentric characters. So, how does the film disappoint after delivering on all of this? This documentary is a great example of how important it is for this type of release to have some type of message or some semblance of a story. It is certainly interesting, but that will only take you so far. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. We really enjoyed Longlegs, so the news of a sequel reuniting Osgood Perkins and Nicolas Cage has us excited. We also cannot wait to see what the next chapter of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre will be like. Maybe this will be the return to prominence the iconic franchise deserves. There was a lot of horror news to come out of CinemaCon. Two, Evil Dead movies, Clayface, Werewulf, Final Destination 7, and so much more. We discuss as much of it as possible, but one thing is clear. Horror fans have a lot to look forward to. It has been a while since we have had a musical on our show. (There is a very good reason. We aren't the biggest fans.) Gangstapuffs fixes that as his choice was 2008's Repo! The Genetic Opera. This has lots of gore and some big names, but is that enough? The answer is, not quite. It is very stylish; an argument can be made that it is ahead of its time. But there are also some choices that make for a very exhausting watch. There are fifty (!) songs in an hour and a half and the acting talents of the stronger cast members are never showcased. At least they kept Paris Hilton to a minimum. Tale From the Crypt is one of the best anthology horror shows of all time. One of the things that made it so special is that so much has been left to our memories. It has not been available for literally decades. We are excited to hear that the full series is coming to Shudder, but we also wonder how well it will hold up. One of the most important parts of starting any new job is the onboarding process. It is during this time that you learn all the rules and regulations that will govern your work life. We found an instructional work video from the late 1980s that is one of the funniest and most disgusting things we have ever seen. One of the big surprises of the post-Covid world is the lack of movies about it. This is not a complaint as we thought he would be flooded by pandemic films. There have been a few, but the films that have dealt with it have chosen to dance around it or use it as a storytelling device. Such is the case with Itch! The premise includes the sudden onset of a virus that leads to a lockdown. It is a relatable situation that also includes some old horror tropes. There are some good moments, but it is a frustrating watch. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. With all the reboots and remakes going around, you figured Hollywood was going to have to get to Bloodsport eventually. But how do you cast it? And is a mid-major company known for horror and artsy-fartsy fare the way to go? We also have more complaints about the latest take on It and lament about what it means for Stephen King. We love vampire stories. As Sinners recently proved, you can tell a great one with strong acting and a top notch story. It seems like Night Patrol is going to go this route. The acting is spot on, with fantastic performances from Justin Long, Jermaine Fowler, and CM Punk, just to name a few. Everyone is completely locked in. The story about the LAPD's dark secret is also interesting. But when you add in demons, lizard men, African mysticism, and lots of blood, things get a little hard to follow. And this is on top of themes of colonizers, race relations, police brutality, and escaping your past. It never stops being fun, but it is a whole lot to take in. There is no doubting Scream's place in horror history. Still, it is somewhat surprising what the latest installment has done. Part of the success of the sequels is due to Jenna Ortega. There was a time when she was white hot and seemed poised to take over Hollywood. Has that window already closed? Horror heads of a certain age will remember Faces of Death. These memories go beyond just seeing the mondo “documentary”. They extend to the first time they heard about it, the stories surrounding, and how they felt watching it. Each new month brings us another remake, but it was safe to say we weren't going to see Faces of Death redone. This week's feature presentation is the surprising remake of the cult classic. Obviously, there was no way they could do a one to one reboot. The original was even a real movie. What they end up doing will surprise everyone familiar with the source material. The modern version of Faces of Death is a slasher. And it is a very well done one. The casting is spot on and the story does not overstay its welcome. It brings laughs and gore and is a strong addition to the franchise. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. There are always upcoming sequels to talk about. Tubi has been kicking ass and taking names. But for all the awesome older content on the channel, people tend to forget that it does have original programming. Last year's R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead was successful enough to have warranted a sequel. Did Tubi stumble on a Halloween franchise? Jennifer's Body is one of the most interesting movies of the 21st century. Released during the height of Megan Fox's popularity, the marketing centered around her and a possible lebsian plotline. Naturally, this did not attract a female audience who discovered the movie after the fact. Now regarded as a feminist cult classic, a sequel seems to be on the way. It has been a while since we have talked about cryptids. The fact of the matter is, they just are not as popular as they used to be. So, we were excited to watch a movie called The Yeti. The fantastic opening got us even more excited. Unfortunately, the film was not able to follow through. The Yeti is filled with flamboyant personalities, some good gore, and decent creature effects. But in between all of this, there is a lot of talking. It is not bad, but it is as if the movie is trying to be way more serious than it needs to be. Is that enough reason to pass on it, though? The 1980s were the best decade for larger than life action heroes. There were so many characters and moments to come out of the decade. We talk about the sudden passing of one of the greatest. Chuck Norris became a meme after the birth of the internet, but he never stopped being a bad ass. Plus, it seems like they are finally going through with a Conan sequel with possibly the biggest action star of them all. We throw around what direction it may decide to go. Another trademark of the 1980s was pumping out content. The straight to video market was booming leading to some awesome childhood memories. This also led to a number of names becoming familiar through the sheer volume of their work. You just don't see that anymore which is one of the things that made The Serpent's Skin so interesting to us. At only 21 years old, this is director Alice Maio Mackay's sixth film. An impressive feat that is a throwback to old school DIY exploitation guerilla filmmaking. Unfortunately, this also leads to some glaring flaws. Cringey dialogue and poor pacing take away from its grounded storytelling and Buffy-esque plot. The Serpent's Skin is filled with promise, and there is a lot to like. It just feels like it needs more seasoning. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. Growing up, we were fans of The X-Files. Reboots have been a mixed bag, however. That does not stop us from being excited about Ryan Coogler's upcoming take on the series. As we speculated last week, The Last Drive-In aired its final episode. According to those in the know, there will be more to come. The first movie this show throws a lot at the wall. It is a supernatural horror movie with a haunted house, ghosts, and cursed objects. Plus, there are twins, a blind medium, and a monster. Oddity makes it work thanks to patient writing and some of the best placed scares we have ever seen. We have covered lots of found footage on our show. Bodycam is the first one to make one of us feel physically ill. And it had nothing to do with what is in the movie. Its chaotic pacing and extra shaky shaky cam will make this a difficult watch for anyone with a weak stomach. It does try to do something different by having a semblance of a plot. This works until it doesn't. After a great set-up, Bodycam runs out of ideas. The first and biggest issue happens almost immediately. There is no reason for anything in the movie to be happening. As things progress, it becomes more convoluted and less enjoyable. Maybe it is better for found footage movies to have no plot. The horror community continues to be rocked with sad news. Bruce Campbell's announcement is one of the most painful. The latest installment of the Scream franchise has polarized audiences, but has not stopped it from being a success. Will the Maniac Cop reboot do as well? There is no doubt that Corey Feldman was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s. What has been lost in all the nonsense that has plagued his life since then is what an amazing actor he was. We jumped at the chance to review Corey Feldman vs the World. In a documentary filled with shocking moments, the biggest may be that it has little to do with his acting heyday and is still a riveting watch. It can be described as a cautionary tale, a trashy reality show, and a story about a villain who is also a victim. With unprecedented access and an interesting approach to documentary filmmaking, it is a must-watch. There was a time when exploitation movies did not care about story. It was all about characters and moments and pushing things to the extreme. It did not always work out, but the results were pretty amazing when it did. Still, with the changing times came a decrease in these types of films. Dolly is a throwback to those simpler times. It is a battle for survival that is all about gore and attrition. It will end up being one of the most disgusting things released this year. The protagonist/antagonist dynamic is fantastic and the grainy look adds to the tense atmosphere.
