Following last's week review, Ice Cream Man became a huge talking point on the internet. At the time of recording, the use of AI had not been revealed. And though we thought the movie should be avoided in theaters, we also thought it was worth streaming. Our opinions have not changed, but we do follow it to discuss Eli Roth's latest release. This leads into a discussion about Touch Grass. The upcoming movie is an AI-generated horror movie. Unsurprisingly, this has upset a good amount of people But how does it tie into the next V/H/S release? Plus another remake of a 1980s “classic”. The Hunger from 1983 is one of the most unique movies we have ever covered on our humble little podcast. On the surface, there does not seem to be anything outstanding about it. It is a tale about a vampire grappling with immortality and lost loves. Watching the movie is a whole other matter. There is not much to the story-at least anything that is there will require a lot of guesswork and filling in the gaps by the viewer. But it looks incredible. The Hunger clearly influenced the music videos and erotic thrillers that would come to dominate the 80s. We discuss its legacy and why it is not talked about more.. It is surprising how little people talk about Robocop. When it first came out it was amazing. The character was awesome, the movie was great, and the action was second to none. As is usually the case, the sequels worsened and the recent remake was not so great. Still, it is surprising to see how the property has all but disappeared. The days of telling a singular story in one movie seem to be gone. Weapons was one of our favorite movies from last year. That being said, we really were not clamoring for more. Unsurprisingly, we are lukewarm on news of the upcoming Gladys prequel. There is still a very good chance that it will be just as great as the source material, but we aren't stoked for it. Ice Cream Man is the latest release from Eli Roth. It is wacky, over the top, and very very bloody. It is the most Eli Rothiest movie ever. It is something of a passion project where Roth did every crazy thing he has ever wanted to do. The end result is a very silly and entertaining watch. We also try to figure out what Roth's place in horror is. He definitely is not up there with the greats like Carpenter and Romero, but he has also left behind an impressive body of work. It has been a long time since we have talked about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this week we have a lot to talk about. And it is more than just the Doomsday trailer and the upcoming Spider-Man movie. On the plus side, it seems like the MCU may be closer to the darker Marvel that people have dreamed about for years. That being said, we also heard that with the last Doctor Strange movie and The New Mutants. Only time will tell, but we are interested in what is happening. We have nothing against toilet humor and low hanging fruit. Troma is responsible for some of our favorite movies. And just generally speaking it is good to have a palette cleanser. Not every movie can be high art or a thrill a minute slasher. Bowels of Hell is a one joke movie. Literally. Every single gag in the Brazilian import is centered around shit. This is not the problem, however. It actually builds well to a pretty cool ending. But the ride there is an arduous one. It is impossible to have a horror podcast and not talk about ‘Friday the 13th' and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street'. And most of our time has been spent wondering how there has not been a new entry in either of the fan favorite franchises for decades. We finally have a little bit of news on both of them. We also talk about the surprising success of Widow's Bay. If you take a 10,000 foot view of Rubberhead: The Life and Monsters of Steve Johnson, you will think you know exactly what it is about. And you would not be completely wrong. The documentary surprised us by being one of the most emotional and information watches we have ever had. If you grew up as a horror fan in the 1980s or early 90s, chances are you have seen Johnson's work. He invented Slimer, worked on ‘Species', created the arms for Doctor Octopus in ‘Spider-Man 2', and worked on the still outstanding special effects for ‘An American Werewolf in London'. And that is just the very tip of the iceberg. But along with being an incredible genius, he is also incredibly self-destructive. This makes Rubberhead one of the most frustrating watches of the year. It has touched us on a personal level, it has earned its place in horror history, and it is one of the few franchises in Hollywood to never release a bad installment. We talk about whether ‘Evil Dead Burn' continues the trend and why it will probably always be the most polarizing entry in the series. A few weeks back we talked about how ‘Evil Dead Burn' had to be trimmed in order to get an ‘R' rating. We wondered how bad it could have been and even tried to figure out what extreme horror even means today. As it turns out, ‘Evil Dead Burn' is incredibly graphic. Was it too much or perfect for an ‘Evil Dead' movie? There has been lots of talk about how ‘Evil Dead Burn' does not fit into the franchise. (This seems to be a conversation whenever a new 'Evil Dead film releases.) There is definitely nothing else like it in the series. We have spent years talking about how important The Blair Witch Project is. We discuss the pros and cons of the latest reimagining of the iconic found footage classic. And we are definitely interested. Plus, the latest internet horror fad that Hollywood wants to adapt into a movie. And while it does seem a little silly to us, they do have a strong director attached to it. The Asylum has been putting out grade-A quality B movies for a long time. Sharknado may be their most well-known, but their specialty are mockbusters like Tomb Invader and Top Gunner. We could not wait to take a look at their inner workings. Mockbuster does much more than that. Sure, there is plenty of footage from The Asylum library. And yes, all of it is amazing. The interviews with the people at the top of the company are also great. They know the score and are funny, entertaining, and informative. But it is the documentary's subject that is the beating heart of the film. Anthony Frith is one of the most charming people we have ever seen and we enjoyed watching his journey. Mockbuster ended up being an unexpected feel-good watch thanks to Frith and all of the incredibly supportive people featured. On top of all that, we get to see how a movie from The Asylum gets made! It has been a bad week for people who enjoy physical media. 'GTA VI' is not getting a physical release, Playstation games are not getting physical releases after next year, and Sony deleted over 550 movies from user libraries. We also talk about the awesome summer box office. Sometimes it seems like the days of good old fashioned extreme horror are gone. It was fun to look for movies that everyone talked about but few people had actually seen. In today's world, it is easy to find any movie that you have heard about. And the worst offenders are nowhere near as bad as they are supposed to be. At least that is our opinion. But can you blame us? When we hear that movies like 'Terrifier' are supposed to be extreme horror, it is hard not to think this way. We decided it was time to take a look back. We literally went to a category that have previously made us feel uncomfortable. 'Ebola Syndrome' is a Category III Hong Kong movie that checks off all the boxes for extreme horror. This movie has all the trigger warnings. Despite the constant racism, misogyny, and assault, there is a shockingly good film here. It is funny, creative, and well-done. But is it worth watching? The Evil Dead franchise holds a special place in our hearts. It is a part of our youth and brings back lots of pleasant memories. There has also never been anything like it. We talk about how the new Evil Dead movies are continuing to live up to the awesome legacy. We also spend some time discussing how two horror icons have finally come together. Time moves more quickly now than it ever has. It was not that long ago that we were talking about a new show executive produced by the Duffer brothers. About a month later, it is one and done. As someone once reminded us, we are just two guys who watch movies. Production budgets and domestic grosses are only a passing interest to us. Still, there are some things that catch our attention. Aside from Art the Clown, what has Damian Leone contributed to horror? We also come dangerously close to gatekeeping while we discuss what extreme horror is. Plus a discussion on the 28 Years franchise somehow leads to a talk about The Bride. We spend a good amount of time talking about Find Your Friends. About 98% of it is spent on the film's writing. It does not take long to realize this is not a good thing. There have been plenty of movies that have led to a discussion about the writing. There has been nothing like this one. The movie clearly deals with sensitive subjects. But it does it in a way that downplays the circumstances, the victim, and its heady themes. It is so bad that we have to constantly reiterate how we are not shitty men. (Who knows? Maybe we are. But that's a different matter.) How bad was the writing for Find Your Friends? So much so that we were constantly filing in story beats to make it make sense to us. And even then, we were still frustrated by what we had seen. This movie had all the ingredients to tell a powerful story about how women are treated. It instead was content to erratically work towards its admittedly wild finale. Horror has always managed to do well at the box office. The way of thinking has always been since the movies are so cheap to make, it is easy to profit of of them. Over the years, we have seen and discussed how horror has become more acceptable in the mainstream. This week we talk about two of the most striking examples of this. One is interesting while the other is just straight up weird. But both have us interested. The idea of a nun who has lost her faith is not strange for an exorcism movie. Having the first introduction of said nun has her completely nude and coked up after a threesome is a little different. After showing off this incredibly buff nun, the awesomely titled Speed Demon takes off from there. The film is an example of less being more. It does not reinvent the wheel and tells the simple story of a person trying to overcome their personal demons in order to defeat a literal one. And it works thanks to its setting and quick pace. But it is in the closing moments that Speed Demon truly shines. In a whirlwind of revelations, the most powerful people in the world become entrenched in Sister Lu's world. Obsession has become one of the biggest and most talked about movies in America. So much so that it has actually been the number one movie at the box office during the week. Obviously, this will change over the holiday weekend, but it is still nice to see it doing so well. We also talk about what the future holds for it. It seems like we have been talking about Crystal Lake for years. And every once in a while, we have a little bit more information to discuss. This time we actually have a release date for the Friday the 13th spinoff. And it is just around the corner. Zombie apocalypse movies are a staple of horror. They can do a lot by doing a little. To break away from the formula, there have been a number of movies in the sub-genre that have tried to do more. This Is Not a Test tries to bring a depth rarely seen in zombie films. This ends up ruining the whole thing. At the very least, you would figure that people who like these types of films would enjoy it. The opening certainly gives that impression. After all, it is a generic zombie movie. Then you realize that there is a big piece missing from what is otherwise a ho-hum release. We like Sophie Thatcher and have enjoyed the works of Jennifer Kent. The idea of the two of them teaming up has us excited. Especially when it is set in a dystopian world. And it is based on a short story written for the pulp magazines of yesteryear. By a woman posing as a man. Good Boy was one of our favorite movies from last year. There is no arguing the hype surrounding it was based on its gimmick, however. Director Ben Leonberg's next movie is also very gimmicky. (No Indy, unfortunately.) We also talk about the next installment of the Blair Witch franchise and some of our concerns. Our first movie from South Africa may sound familiar. It is about a killer who preys on people's fears and wears black gloves with razor blades. But there is a reason that no one says Wes Craven stole the idea for A Nightmare on Elm Street. Quite simply, there is nothing like 1979's The Demon. This is probably for the best since the movie makes absolutely no sense. There is a soldier with ESP, a love story, an unresolved kidnapping, lots of quiet nudity, and no ending. Naturally, one of us was not impressed. A few weeks back we wondered how well Michael would fare at the box office. There is so much to his legacy that we truly had no idea. Two weeks later, we have a good idea. It also leads to a discussion about how the media, especially movie critics, really suck. It took one of us a second viewing to truly appreciate it, but we both loved Longlegs. It is moody, well acted, and just all around frightening. Unsurprisingly, we are very excited to see the sequel. Surprisingly, that is going to be longer than expected. Hokum was recently released and will probably end up being on the list for one of the best horror movies of the year. Based on his output, it seems like director Damian McCarthy has a promising future in horror. At least we thought that until The Python Hunt did not have to do much. The true story is centered around an annual competition in Florida about the hunting and killing of invasive pythons in the Everglades. This means you will get a cool setting, conflict, and eccentric characters. So, how does the film disappoint after delivering on all of this? This documentary is a great example of how important it is for this type of release to have some type of message or some semblance of a story. We really enjoyed Longlegs, so the news of a sequel reuniting Osgood Perkins and Nicolas Cage has us excited. We also cannot wait to see what the next chapter of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre will be like. Maybe this will be the return to prominence the iconic franchise deserves. There was a lot of horror news to come out of CinemaCon. Two, Evil Dead movies, Clayface, Werewulf, Final Destination 7, and so much more. We discuss as much of it as possible, but one thing is clear. Horror fans have a lot to look forward to. It has been a while since we have had a musical on our show. (There is a very good reason. We aren't the biggest fans.) Gangstapuffs fixes that as his choice was 2008's Repo! The Genetic Opera. This has lots of gore and some big names, but is that enough? The answer is, not quite. It is very stylish; an argument can be made that it is ahead of its time. But there are also some choices that make for a very exhausting watch. There are fifty (!) songs in an hour and a half and the acting talents of the stronger cast members are never showcased. At least they kept Paris Hilton to a minimum. Tale From the Crypt is one of the best anthology horror shows of all time. One of the things that made it so special is that so much has been left to our memories. It has not been available for literally decades. We are excited to hear that the full series is coming to Shudder, but we also wonder how well it will hold up. One of the most important parts of starting any new job is the onboarding process. It is during this time that you learn all the rules and regulations that will govern your work life. We found an instructional work video from the late 1980s that is one of the funniest and most disgusting things we have ever seen. One of the big surprises of the post-Covid world is the lack of movies about it. This is not a complaint as we thought he would be flooded by pandemic films. There have been a few, but the films that have dealt with it have chosen to dance around it or use it as a storytelling device. Such is the case with Itch! The premise includes the sudden onset of a virus that leads to a lockdown. It is a relatable situation that also includes some old horror tropes. With all the reboots and remakes going around, you figured Hollywood was going to have to get to Bloodsport eventually. But how do you cast it? We love vampire stories. As Sinners recently proved, you can tell a great one with strong acting and a top notch story. It seems like Night Patrol is going to go this route. The acting is spot on, with fantastic performances from Justin Long, Jermaine Fowler, and CM Punk, just to name a few. Everyone is completely locked in. The story about the LAPD's dark secret is also interesting. But when you add in demons, lizard men, African mysticism, and lots of blood, things get a little hard to follow. And this is on top of themes of colonizers, race relations, police brutality, and escaping your past. It never stops being fun, but it is a whole lot to take in.
