It is nice to see a long running franchise try something different. The new Evil Dead movies are an excellent example. So when we heard that a new director was interested in directing A Nightmare on Elm Street, we were interested. Until we found out who that director was.We spent a few weeks last year talking about Welcome to Derry. You can listen to just about every episode we had in November and December to hear all our thoughts about the show. The cliff notes version is we did not like it. So what do we think about season two and the news it will be adapting one of the best parts of It?It's a shame they do not make as many sword and sorcery movies anymore. Times and tastes change, but it seems like stories of heroes fighting evil with magic and swords would be timeless. You will come across one every once in a while - we have even covered a few here - but their heyday has long since passed.Which is why we went back to 1982 and Conquest for our feature presentation. The movie is everything you would expect. Lots of fighting and nudity with just a little plot. But it is the work of a surprising director that makes this a must see from the genre. We hate to start the show with sad news. But the older we get, the more it seems to happen. Two icons from our childhood suddenly passed away and we talk about their accomplishments and the legacy they left behind. Despite not actually reviewing it for our show, we have talked a lot about Obsession. The little horror film has caught the public imagination like no other movie this year. We talk about the success of Obsession and what it means to indie horror in general. We do not shy away from movies that make us uncomfortable. On the contrary, we often go looking for them. We did not expect Penny Lane is Dead to be one of those films. We figured it would be a fun homage to 1980s Ozploitation. And in a lot of ways it was. But then there are the moments that harken to a darker side of the sub-genre. The movie is disgusting, bloody, tense, and an all around difficult watch. And through it all it manages to sneak in some genuine humor. It was a confusing watch to say the least. We had no hesitation when it came to the ending, however. One of horror's most dependable constants are Stephen King adaptations. The latest one takes a book that mixes one of the author's greatest strengths. King is great at mixing grounded scares with supernatural horror. Which is why the team announced to work on Desperation is interesting. Plus, another clever marketing stunt from Neon. We have not discussed the Paramount-WB merger. And for good reason. We do not know enough about it and we kinda don't give a shit. But there is some interesting news to come out of it. Apparently with the rights for A Nightmare on Elm Street all over the place, both studios are scrambling to get a new movie out first. How sweet, fresh meat. Buffet Infinity gets off to one of the strongest starts we have seen for any movie possibly ever. It is clever, funny, creepy, and mysterious. The indie horror is a mix of found footage and sketch comedy that manages to be familiar and unique at the same time. Through the first act, it seemed like we had found something really special. The film then proceeded to take one of the greatest nose dives we have ever seen. It becomes completely derailed and goes from being about two warring restaurants to just a bunch of unexplained nonsense. Following last's week review, Ice Cream Man became a huge talking point on the internet. At the time of recording, the use of AI had not been revealed. And though we thought the movie should be avoided in theaters, we also thought it was worth streaming. Our opinions have not changed, but we do follow it to discuss Eli Roth's latest release. This leads into a discussion about Touch Grass. The upcoming movie is an AI-generated horror movie. Unsurprisingly, this has upset a good amount of people But how does it tie into the next V/H/S release? Plus another remake of a 1980s “classic”. The Hunger from 1983 is one of the most unique movies we have ever covered on our humble little podcast. On the surface, there does not seem to be anything outstanding about it. It is a tale about a vampire grappling with immortality and lost loves. Watching the movie is a whole other matter. There is not much to the story-at least anything that is there will require a lot of guesswork and filling in the gaps by the viewer. But it looks incredible. The Hunger clearly influenced the music videos and erotic thrillers that would come to dominate the 80s. We discuss its legacy and why it is not talked about more.. It is surprising how little people talk about Robocop. When it first came out it was amazing. The character was awesome, the movie was great, and the action was second to none. As is usually the case, the sequels worsened and the recent remake was not so great. Still, it is surprising to see how the property has all but disappeared. The days of telling a singular story in one movie seem to be gone. Weapons was one of our favorite movies from last year. That being said, we really were not clamoring for more. Unsurprisingly, we are lukewarm on news of the upcoming Gladys prequel. There is still a very good chance that it will be just as great as the source material, but we aren't stoked for it. Ice Cream Man is the latest release from Eli Roth. It is wacky, over the top, and very very bloody. It is the most Eli Rothiest movie ever. It is something of a passion project where Roth did every crazy thing he has ever wanted to do. The end result is a very silly and entertaining watch. We also try to figure out what Roth's place in horror is. He definitely is not up there with the greats like Carpenter and Romero, but he has also left behind an impressive body of work. It has been a long time since we have talked about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this week we have a lot to talk about. And it is more than just the Doomsday trailer and the upcoming Spider-Man movie. On the plus side, it seems like the MCU may be closer to the darker Marvel that people have dreamed about for years. That being said, we also heard that with the last Doctor Strange movie and The New Mutants. Only time will tell, but we are interested in what is happening. We have nothing against toilet humor and low hanging fruit. Troma is responsible for some of our favorite movies. And just generally speaking it is good to have a palette cleanser. Not every movie can be high art or a thrill a minute slasher. Bowels of Hell is a one joke movie. Literally. Every single gag in the Brazilian import is centered around shit. This is not the problem, however. It actually builds well to a pretty cool ending. But the ride there is an arduous one. It is impossible to have a horror podcast and not talk about ‘Friday the 13th' and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street'. And most of our time has been spent wondering how there has not been a new entry in either of the fan favorite franchises for decades. We finally have a little bit of news on both of them. We also talk about the surprising success of Widow's Bay. If you take a 10,000 foot view of Rubberhead: The Life and Monsters of Steve Johnson, you will think you know exactly what it is about. And you would not be completely wrong. The documentary surprised us by being one of the most emotional and information watches we have ever had. If you grew up as a horror fan in the 1980s or early 90s, chances are you have seen Johnson's work. He invented Slimer, worked on ‘Species', created the arms for Doctor Octopus in ‘Spider-Man 2', and worked on the still outstanding special effects for ‘An American Werewolf in London'. And that is just the very tip of the iceberg. But along with being an incredible genius, he is also incredibly self-destructive. This makes Rubberhead one of the most frustrating watches of the year. We have spent years talking about how important The Blair Witch Project is. We discuss the pros and cons of the latest reimagining of the iconic found footage classic. And we are definitely interested. Plus, the latest internet horror fad that Hollywood wants to adapt into a movie. And while it does seem a little silly to us, they do have a strong director attached to it. The Asylum has been putting out grade-A quality B movies for a long time. Sharknado may be their most well-known, but their specialty are mockbusters like Tomb Invader and Top Gunner. We could not wait to take a look at their inner workings. Mockbuster does much more than that. Sure, there is plenty of footage from The Asylum library. And yes, all of it is amazing. The interviews with the people at the top of the company are also great. They know the score and are funny, entertaining, and informative. But it is the documentary's subject that is the beating heart of the film. Anthony Frith is one of the most charming people we have ever seen and we enjoyed watching his journey. It has been a bad week for people who enjoy physical media. 'GTA VI' is not getting a physical release, Playstation games are not getting physical releases after next year, and Sony deleted over 550 movies from user libraries. We also talk about the awesome summer box office. Sometimes it seems like the days of good old fashioned extreme horror are gone. It was fun to look for movies that everyone talked about but few people had actually seen. In today's world, it is easy to find any movie that you have heard about. And the worst offenders are nowhere near as bad as they are supposed to be. At least that is our opinion. But can you blame us? When we hear that movies like 'Terrifier' are supposed to be extreme horror, it is hard not to think this way. We decided it was time to take a look back. We literally went to a category that have previously made us feel uncomfortable. 'Ebola Syndrome' is a Category III Hong Kong movie that checks off all the boxes for extreme horror. This movie has all the trigger warnings. Despite the constant racism, misogyny, and assault, there is a shockingly good film here. It is funny, creative, and well-done. But is it worth watching? The Evil Dead franchise holds a special place in our hearts. It is a part of our youth and brings back lots of pleasant memories. There has also never been anything like it. Time moves more quickly now than it ever has. It was not that long ago that we were talking about a new show executive produced by the Duffer brothers. About a month later, it is one and done. As someone once reminded us, we are just two guys who watch movies. Production budgets and domestic grosses are only a passing interest to us. Still, there are some things that catch our attention. Aside from Art the Clown, what has Damian Leone contributed to horror? We also come dangerously close to gatekeeping while we discuss what extreme horror is. Plus a discussion on the 28 Years franchise somehow leads to a talk about The Bride. We spend a good amount of time talking about Find Your Friends. About 98% of it is spent on the film's writing. It does not take long to realize this is not a good thing. There have been plenty of movies that have led to a discussion about the writing. There has been nothing like this one. The movie clearly deals with sensitive subjects. But it does it in a way that downplays the circumstances, the victim, and its heady themes. It is so bad that we have to constantly reiterate how we are not shitty men. (Who knows? Maybe we are. But that's a different matter.) How bad was the writing for Find Your Friends? So much so that we were constantly filing in story beats to make it make sense to us. And even then, we were still frustrated by what we had seen. This movie had all the ingredients to tell a powerful story about how women are treated. It instead was content to erratically work towards its admittedly wild finale. Over the years, we have seen and discussed how horror has become more acceptable in the mainstream. This week we talk about two of the most striking examples of this. One is interesting while the other is just straight up weird. But both have us interested. The idea of a nun who has lost her faith is not strange for an exorcism movie. Having the first introduction of said nun has her completely nude and coked up after a threesome is a little different. After showing off this incredibly buff nun, the awesomely titled Speed Demon takes off from there. The film is an example of less being more. It does not reinvent the wheel and tells the simple story of a person trying to overcome their personal demons in order to defeat a literal one. And it works thanks to its setting and quick pace. But it is in the closing moments that Speed Demon truly shines. In a whirlwind of revelations, the most powerful people in the world become entrenched in Sister Lu's world. Obsession has become one of the biggest and most talked about movies in America. So much so that it has actually been the number one movie at the box office during the week. To break away from the formula, there have been a number of movies in the sub-genre that have tried to do more. This Is Not a Test tries to bring a depth rarely seen in zombie films. This ends up ruining the whole thing. At the very least, you would figure that people who like these types of films would enjoy it. The opening certainly gives that impression. We like Sophie Thatcher and have enjoyed the works of Jennifer Kent. The idea of the two of them teaming up has us excited. Especially when it is set in a dystopian world. And it is based on a short story written for the pulp magazines of yesteryear. By a woman posing as a man. Good Boy was one of our favorite movies from last year. There is no arguing the hype surrounding it was based on its gimmick, however. Director Ben Leonberg's next movie is also very gimmicky. (No Indy, unfortunately.) Quite simply, there is nothing like 1979's The Demon. This is probably for the best since the movie makes absolutely no sense. There is a soldier with ESP, a love story, an unresolved kidnapping, lots of quiet nudity, and no ending. Naturally, one of us was not impressed.
