The last show of the year is upon us. We are doing something we have never done before. We have covered limited series before. To end the year we also have the return of one of our most asked about guest hosts. It is all killer, no filler this episode as we end things on a strong note.A few weeks back we started following Welcome to Derry. The first two episodes were horrible. Thankfully, the third one improved to just merely bad. We figured that was a good time to take a break from the show. We also knew we would come back to close the whole thing out.It seemed like things would be okay for a couple of shows. They had found their stride. Sure, the CGI was still awful. Yes, the opening credits sucked. Yeah, they kept introducing numerous new subplots every episode. But at least Welcome to Derry was remaining at a consistent level of bad.Then we came to the last three episodes.Everything became progressively worse. Seemingly important characters would disappear then just reappear to progress the story. Important plot points were dropped until the finale. The writing felt like things were being done as the show progressed. And nothing made sense.Don't believe us? That's fair. We spent the whole time talking the show down. The show is made for a newer audience than us. But listen to the people who love the show. Not the ones who just heap praise upon the surface level qualities. SPOILER ALERT!!! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITIONS WE DISCUSS ANYTHING AND EVERYTHINGOsgood Perkins is one of the best horror directors going today. He has an eye for horror and knows how to deliver scares and an engaging story. Keeper is no different as its character driven plot builds to some of the best jump scares of the year. The mood will draw you in and the setting is perfect for its tale.Which is not to say that the storytelling is not without its problems. The pacing may be an issue for some as it takes a while for the plot to actually develop. It is not a long movie, but the first third of Keeper is a little too methodical. But it is the ending that is a bigger issue. The exposition dumps and vagueness will definitely turn some off.One thing that we had no problem with was the performance of Tatiana Maslany. She has done some amazing work in genre cinema and is the heartbeat of Keeper. So much so that if the same story is told without her, it would be nowhere near as good. The movie does a lot right, but she is the highlight. The end result is a whole lot of good with some very noticeable bad. What does that mean for the entire film? We talk about the direction of Perkins, its patient and frustrating storytelling, the acting of the small cast, the over the top ending, and more as we try to make sense of Keeper. The names will grab all the attention - Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Bill Skarsgard, Robert Pattinson - but it is the story that is the real standout.Set in the Midwest during the late 1940s to the late 60s, the plot deals with a very specific part of America. It tackles difficult themes in a manner that is both frightening and funny. It skewers religion without being a total takedown while also talking about how important family is and how it can hold you back. Its dark tone is balanced by great pacing that will keep audiences engaged.Welcome to Derry is pretty much the opposite. It is over the top, lacks strong characters, and has nothing serious to say. To be fair, the last point should not be held too much against it. After all, Stephen King himself once asked why can't a story just be a story? The flip side is the HBO prequel really wants to say something meaningful.That being said, it has improved with each episode, with the latest being the best one yet. The problem is that it has the albatross of the first two episodes to overcome. Those were so bad, that unless the show is amazing, it will never break past the ceiling of “meh”. This is kind of a shame, since it makes it more difficult to appreciate its improvements. Still, the stuff that remains bad, is very bad. There are some movies that stay with you. Gremlins is a huge part of our childhood. And though some of our memories may be muddled, we look back on it fondly. A more recent favorite is The Mummy, which has some of the best on-screen chemistry we have ever seen. We discuss our excitement for the upcoming sequels. Welcome to Derry has been a hit for HBO. The premiere was the third most watched in the history of the streaming service. There are some major caveats, but it is an accomplishment. Along those same lines is how the second episode was better than the first. It is noteworthy, but how much does it actually say about the show?Spoiler alert: nothing good. The debut was such a mess that if it did not improve in even the smallest way, Welcome to Derry would be a leading candidate for Worst Show of the Year. (As it is, it is still in the running.) Episode two has given us a clear road map of what is to come. We will be getting too much of everything. If you like over the top nonsensical storytelling, then this should be right up your alley.There is nothing wrong with putting your own spin on the Dracula mythos. Over the century plus since the seminal book was first published, many authors, actors, and filmmakers have put their own spin on Bram Stoker's tale. But one thing you should probably never try to do is completely re-write what happened.Yet, that is exactly what Joe Hill does with Abraham's Boys. Not a retelling from a different point of view or through a modern lens. A sequel that decides to make wild changes to the original. There is some promise with the general idea, but it is executed in a poor manner that ends up being the worst thing possible: boring. When we first heard about it, we were incredibly excited. There are so many excellent stories in the sourced material that would make for great television. And who knows what original ideas the writers could come up with?Then we saw the first trailer.We went into the show fearing the worst. Welcome to Derry may not have been as bad as we feared, but it definitely was not very good. From bad CGI to completely ignoring what the source material is about, we talk about our (many) gripes. Even the things that were done right had a ring or wrong around them.Hell House LLC was a straightforward found footage horror movie. It did not do anything revolutionary, but it was a good time. Its sequels have expanded on the lore in ways that were not needed. The latest installment puts on full display how the original movie was never intended to be a series.Hell House LLC: Lineage is not for newcomers. It is not for casual fans. It is not even for people who have seen all of the installments and enjoyed them. This movie is strictly for those who know the series in and out. You need to have an intimate working knowledge of these movies to get anything out of the latest one. But at least the change from first person to traditional narrative was a good idea. Right? How do we talk about the marketing of movies so much? Probably because it often feels uninspired. Character posters all look alike, trailers give away everything, and press junkets seem to be more about looking for viral moments. There have been some noticeable exceptions, but we think we have found the one that is the best of them all. Plus, the latest comedic talent to try their hand at horror.We love exploitation flicks, and with so many streaming channels, they are fairly easy to find. Tubi has done a magnificent job, providing us with some absolute gems. Bruno Mattei is an exploitation master who has one everything from Nazisploitation, to women in prison movies, to one of the greatest Jaws rip offs of all time.He also gave us Rats: Night of Terror.This is another one of those Italian exploitation movies that takes place in a dystopian future with lots of motorcycles, crazy outfits, an lots of gore. The effects are disgusting, the shallow characters draw you in, an the rats are frightening. It is fun stuff, if a little standard. Then you witness one of the greatest endings you will ever see.The Salem Chronicles also keeps things familiar. Its says it is a modern twist on the Salem witch trials, but there is nothing new to see here. (There is also nothing on the poster that has anything to do with the film.) It would be a fine, it derivative, watch if the crew cared about it. This is a poorly done mess that will make you laugh without ever being fun. Before we get to the scary stuff we discuss a cool double feature coming in November. It's just a question of whether our bodies could hold up to it. We then talk about a horror legend who is surprisingly overlooked. Someone who deserves a biopic and may possibly be getting one soon.Low budget horror is supposed to be gross and fun. Especially when you have a title like The Weedhacker Massacre. Anything besides the laughs and gore are a bonus. The Weedhacker Massacre attempts at humor rarely work. And it has little in the way of gore. This means it has to focus on story and acting. It goes about as well as expected.Other is saved by its amazing lead performance. This includes a main character who gives you plenty of reason to get behind her but does everything to push you away. It is one of the strangest written characters we have ever seen. The film is also strange. It is tense and scary but not noticeably so. It has an interesting premise, but nothing stands out. It also has a poorly done twist and a hilarious reveal. Quentin Tarantino has been releasing movies since we were teenagers, so he holds a special place for us. This is especially true of the Kill Bill movies since we were a little older, plus they became a part of mainstream culture. Watching The Whole Bloody Affair is a tall order, however. The news about Scary Movie 6 has us much more excited.After watching the trailer for Ash, it is hard not to wonder if they used all the good shots for it. After seeing the actual movie, you realized that they could have picked any part of the film and it would have looked great. It also features some top notch performances and an engaging mystery.So why do so many people hate it? It probably has to do with the climax, which ruins all the good will Ash had built up. The over the top nature is subjective and some people will enjoy it. But its decision to completely rip off Alien is hard to ignore.Good Boy does not hide the fact that it is a gimmick. It is a haunted house story in which its main character is a dog. But not only is Indy the main character, he is pretty much the only one. The story and camera are completely different focused on him.Does it move past this and become something that audiences can become attached to? Well, if you have ever had a pet, you will love Good Boy. And if you have not had one, it will make you want to get one. Oh yeah. We do not talk about Jeremy Irons enough on this show. He is an actor's actor who we do not see in genre often. His involvement in the remake of a 1980s cult classic changes that and has us excited. We also revisit our conversation about how comedians have positively affected horror. Plus, bad pedophiles vs good ones.We like when PR companies go the extra mile and the marketing for Bone Lake has been inspired. From suggestively placing the R rating to some cool posters, the film's promotion has been eye-catching. The over the top opening adds to this with lots of nudity and a gruesome kill.When it turns things down, it is to an almost shocking degree that may cause people to turn out. Which is a shame, since Bone Lake becomes an excellent psychological thriller that does an excellent job of toying with audience expectations. It also boasts one of the strongest performances of the year.Since returning in 2021, the V/H/S series has put out some great releases. They have taken things to he past along with trying out new things like sci-fi horror. This year the franchise tackles something that John Carpenter was never able to do. V/H/S Halloween sees the found footage anthology turn its eye towards a particular holiday in October.There have been some fun segments, but this is the most fun V/H/S has been as an overall product in years. It perfectly captures the Halloween spirit and presents stories that range from scary to funny. And all of them are gross. This is one of the movies that will become a regular tradition.But there is a major caveat. V/H/S Halloween also has the darkest segment in the history of the franchise. It will be a polarizing watch that many people may skip. Others will think it is great extreme horror. One thing is for sure; the segment is one of the best seen in the V/H/S series, but it feels out of place in this year's edition. During our Weapons special edition we discussed a possible sequel. It turns out we were not far off the mark. We are surprisingly uninterested, but we think we may have a good reason. We also talk about an interesting option for those you enjoy doing 31 Days of Halloween.The 1980s were arguably the Golden Era of cheesy B-horror movies. There was so much good stuff to come out of the decade. Many of these straight to video offerings became cult classics and shaped the future horror community. By the time the 1990s rolled around it seemed like there was nothing new to add.Blood Hook from 1986 is a great example. Slashers were still all the rage, and this movie includes many familiar tropes. But its killer is completely unique. The villain is a fisherman. Not a guy wearing a mask and carrying a hook. A straight up fisher with a hook, line, and sinker. And yes, he does reel in his victims.When we talked about the trailer for Night of the Reaper last week we were impressed. We were not quite sure what the movie was about, but it had an aesthetic that appealed to us. It looked like a throwback to 80s slashers, which is exactly how it starts. It is one of the best openings we have seen all year.Unfortunately, everything goes off the rails from there. The story goes in odd directions, working with two different plots. This ends up watering both down and makes for a very tedious watch. It feels like two separate movies were forced together.
