This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit andrewsullivan.substack.comSally is a journalist, columnist, TV commentator, author, wife to Ben Bradlee, and legendary DC hostess. Who better to talk to about the implosion of The Washington Post? She also founded the Post's religion website, “On Faith.” She's the author of six books, including the spiritual memoir Finding Magic, and We're Going to Make You a Star — about her time at “CBS Morning News.” Her latest novel is Silent Retreat, and she's now working on a memoir called Never Invite Sally Quinn. As always, please send any guest recs, dissents, and other comments to dish@andrewsullivan.com. A listener writes:Thanks for all these good episodes. Is Vivek still planning to be a guest soon? I have been looking forward to that episode. He got cold feet. Too bad. On the other hand, I tend to avoid active politicians. Because they're rarely as candid as I'd like a guest to be. Oh well.A fan of last week's pod who lives near Atlanta writes, “The longtime Dishheads on the Mableton cul-de-sac definitely approve of your interview with homegrown talent Zaid Jilani”:I agree with his description of Mableton as a bit like the United Nations; I see that diversity in our grocery stores and local restaurants. He mentioned how he was often the only Pakistani and thus perceived as a nonthreatening minority. It makes me wonder how much the diversity mix affects how people perceive immigration? If a large group from one country arrives, does that seem more like an invasion? If a similar number arrives but from a wide range of locations, does that seem more like the normal American melting pot? After 30 years of living in Mableton, this may partly explain why I am not bothered by immigration in the way that you are, Andrew. I expect to see and hear all sorts of people wherever I go in my neighborhood. Today the teller at the bank spoke accented English. There are regular clerks at my grocery store who are immigrants. Our new HVAC was installed by immigrants. As an Atlanta suburb, there are many people descended from African slaves. European ancestry is merely one possibility off the long colorful menu around here.I think pace and numbers matter. A slower pace and fewer — with no massive homogenous populations arriving at once. And a new emphasis on Americanization over “multiculturalism”.From a listener who wants to “Make Democrats Great Again”:Great conversation with Zaid Jilani last week. I am very concerned that hardly any Democrats are being at all introspective, trying to figure out where they went wrong and how to become a party that can actually win elections — maybe even hearts and minds. They are only defined as anti-Trump, and their only hope is for Trump to go down in flames — which he very well might, but all they aspire to is winning as the least-worst party. The policy directions for reclaiming sanity and moderate voters are obvious (to me, at least). Here are my top three issues:1. AffordabilityThe longest lever to affect affordability is housing. Democrats have been complete failures in this regard, with strongholds like California and NYC being the least affordable places. When they talk about “affordable housing,” they only mean housing that is forced below market rate for the few poor people lucky enough to get it. They offer no solutions for the middle class or young people. The solution is obvious: build more. Plough through the various restrictions that are preventing housing from being built. There is no reason housing can't be cheap, except for NIMBY politics. Scott Weiner in California has been doing great work on this.Health care is the second-longest affordability lever. Obamacare made some progress, but not nearly enough, especially in terms of keeping costs down. But I'm not sure we're ready for another push on this; I say focus on housing.2. ImmigrationObviously there should be some immigration, and obviously we have structured our economy such that many jobs are only done by immigrants. But the Democrats' policy of simply not enforcing immigration law is untenable, especially for a group asking to be put in charge of law enforcement. We need those migrant workers, so find a way for them be here legally. Not through amnesty, but through some sort of bureaucratic process: have the employers fill out a form; have the prospective worker fill out a form in some office in Mexico; have someone process the form; and give them a green card. This is simple stuff! And yes, it would be helpful to admit that open borders, sanctuary cities, and subverting the law were not good ideas.3. CultureEnd wokeness. America is not a country consumed by white supremacy, and the people who voted for Trump are not racists. There are hardly any racists! And drop the other insanities, like the trans stuff. The message needs to be, “We are the Democrats and we want to help anybody from any state who needs help.” Hard to convince struggling white people in the South that you're going to help them when you seem to despise them. Love your brother, for crying out loud. And naturally, today's woke Democrats would be much more accepting of this message if it came from a racial minority candidate.Another wanted to hear more:I wish you had asked Zaid about Josh Shapiro. Also, when Zaid talked about affordability, he never mentioned housing — which is why there are so many ex-Californians in his home state of Georgia and elsewhere. “Build Baby Build” should be the slogan of the Democratic Party, rather than gaslighting Americans into believing housing prices will come down because we are getting rid of immigrants (Vance). Here's a dissent:About 20:30 into your interview with Zaid Jilani, he said that the root of all the Abrahamic faiths is that the meek have rights. You replied that this applied more to Christianity and Islam than to Judaism. I say this neither rhetorically nor to admonish you, but how much do you know about Judaism? Your comment is completely mistaken. Just what do you think Judaism says about the meek?Another has examples:In Genesis, you find that all humans were created b'tzelem Elohim (in the image of God). Moreover, Jewish texts consistently frame care for the poor as a legal obligation and moral imperative, not mere charity. Every Jewish child learns that promoting economic justice is mandated. It is called tzedakah. This religious mandate has manifested itself in the real world. Jews have been disproportionately represented in social justice movements aimed at promoting human equality. It wasn't an accident that two of three civil rights movement activists murdered in Neshoba County, Mississippi by the Ku Klux Klan were Jewish.Points taken. Big generalizations in a chat can be dumb. My quarrel may be semantic: the meek is not merely the weak. It's about the quiet people, those easily trampled upon. Like many of Jesus' innovations, it takes a Jewish idea further.Another listener on the Zaid pod:I wonder if you ever play the game of “which time would you like to go back to”? I do! And only half-jokingly, I often say 1994 in DC. Something about, for example, Christopher Hitchens on CSPAN in a dreary suit jacket discussing such *trivial* aspects of politics in a serious way. How perfect! When I listened to your episode with Zaid Jilani about how the left can win, it seemed dated to about this period in the early ‘90s.Ah yes, the Nineties. They were heady times and I think we all kinda realized it at the time. The economy was booming, crime was plummeting, Annie Leibovitz took my picture, and we had the luxury of an impeachment over a b*****b. Good times. On another episode, a listener says I have a “rose-colored view of President Obama”:In your conversation with Jason Willick, you said that Obama was a stickler for proper procedure and doing things the right way. I might instance, on the other side:* Evading the constitutional requirements on treaties in pursuit of the Iran deal (an evasion that the Republicans were stupid enough to go along with)* Encouraging the regulatory gambit of “sue and settle”* The “Dear Colleague” letter* “I've got a pen and a phone”Points taken. Especially the DACA move. But compared to Biden and Trump? Much better. One more listener email:I've been following you for years, but more recently I became a subscriber, and it's a decision I don't regret! I usually listen to the Dishcast over the weekend, and I always find it extremely stimulating, but there is also something relaxing about the length and scope of your conversations.I want to respond to something you said in your Claire Berlinski episode on the subject of Ukraine. Although I appreciate your position in defence of international law, you implied that Russia's claim to Ukrainian land is somehow “historically legitimate.” This is not only problematic from a logical standpoint (does Sweden have a historically legitimate claim to Finland and Norway, or does the UK have a claim to the Republic of Ireland, the US, and all its former colonies?), but also not based on historical reality.Unfortunately, this is not the first time your comments on Ukraine seem come through the prism of a Russian lens. I am sure it's not intentional; perhaps that's not a subject you have invested much time in, which is legitimate. However, I find it a bit surprising that, as we approach the fifth year of Russia's full-scale invasion, you still don't seem to have had the curiosity to explore this and invite any specialist on Ukraine. If Timothy Snyder is too political these days, I would recommend Serhii Plokhy — possibly the most eminent historian of Ukraine — or Yaroslav Hrytsak. They would each be a very interesting conversation. The Dishcast has featured many guests with expertise on the Ukraine war, including Anne Applebaum (twice), John Mearsheimer, Samuel Ramani (twice), Edward Luttwak, Fiona Hill (twice), Robert Wright, Robert Kaplan, Fareed Zakaria, Douglas Murray, Edward Luce, and Niall Ferguson.A reader responds to last week's column, “The President Of The 0.00001 Percent”:Like you, I'm not against people getting rich. A lot of good is done by a few people who have enough money to seed research and the arts, and pursue things that ordinary worker bees would never have the margin of time or resources to pursue. Good so far.But all strong forces need regulation and/or protective barriers, whether it's the weather, sex, patriotism, or capitalism. What's going on now is obscene. Progressive taxation is a social good: it doesn't stop anyone from getting richer and richer; it doesn't remove the positive motivators for success; it just means that the farther they get, the higher their proportionate contribution to the system that lets them get there. There are various ways to tweak the dials, but there is nothing philosophically wrong with tweaking them in a way the sets some outer limit. Let it be very high, but let it not be infinite. Here's a familiar dissent:You were right to torch the nihilism of the .00001 class. You were right to call out moral evasions. But when you referred to “the IDF's massacre of children in Gaza,” you collapsed a morally and legally distinct reality into a slogan. Words matter. “Massacre” implies intent. It suggests that the deliberate killing of children is policy rather than tragic consequence. That is a serious charge, and it deserves serious evidence. The governing reality in Gaza is not that Israel woke up one morning and decided to target children.

Medical Board Failures: How Michael McKee Got Licensed While Evading Malpractice

Today we're looking beyond the alleged double homicide of Monique and Spencer Tepe to ask a question that affects every patient in America: How did the man charged with their murders get licensed to practice medicine in the first place?Michael McKee, a vascular surgeon, allegedly killed his ex-wife and her husband in Columbus, Ohio on December 30, 2025. He was arrested eleven days later at a Chick-fil-A blocks from the Illinois hospital where he was still employed. But the red flags existed long before the murders.A Nevada malpractice attorney spent two years trying to serve McKee with papers. The addresses provided by McKee's surgical group didn't exist. His Nevada license expired in June 2025 while the lawsuit was still pending. Yet Illinois granted him a medical license in 2024 and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center credentialed him to operate on patients. The system designed to catch doctors like McKee - the National Practitioner Data Bank - only tracks paid claims, not pending lawsuits. Many state boards don't even query it. A major investigation found over 500 doctors disciplined in one state practicing elsewhere with clean records. In education they call it "passing the trash" and there's federal law against it. In medicine? There's nothing. The AMA has fought to keep the NPDB closed to the public. And patients have no way to know if their surgeon has a troubled history in another state.Today we examine the systemic failures - and ask how many other doctors like McKee are still out there.#MichaelMcKee #MoniqueTepe #SpencerTepe #TrueCrimeToday #MedicalBoard #Malpractice #PatientSafety #NPDB #TrueCrime #DoctorDisciplineJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? What is the Scientific Evidence That AI Hasn't Surpassed Human Intelligence?

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 9, 2025 11:36

By David Stephen There is a recent [September, 1, 2025] report on SciTechDaily, "AI Is Not Intelligent at All" - Expert Warns of Worldwide Threat to Human Dignity, stating that, "AI is not intelligent in any human sense at all. It is a triumph in engineering, not in cognitive behavior. It has no clue what it's doing or why - there's no thought process as a human would understand it, just pattern recognition stripped of embodiment, memory, empathy, or wisdom." Has AI Surpassed Human Intelligence? What is the proof that AI is not intelligent, at all? If AI is not intelligent, is it a conclusion of the scientific method or, of common sense? Is the conclusion a result of correlative observation of what intelligence is? If intelligence emanates from the brain, what is the certainty of assumptions, by extrinsic outcomes? For example, if an individual is smiling, is the individual happy, if not [smiling], is the individual sad? If the individual seems apathetic, is the individual uninterested? If the individual is listening, does the individual understand? There are several areas where studies, using the scientific method, are based on observations and correlations, but anything about the brain, causation [or how the brain works], precedes correlates. Body language and other outward cues have already been debunked as emotional parallels. So, why would intelligence be assumed to be available [or not] based on observations of what intelligence is, without the mechanism? In the human brain, there are components. Those components organize functions. Those functions are experienced [and observed by the self and others]. But, the stretches of components and functions in the brain open the possibilities for variabilities. Aside from the capability to present a different state to external observers, the brain may also be in a state but not make that state appear [or align] with its regular company. Simply, it is possible to feel a certain way and show another. It is also possible to feel a certain way, but the output for the mechanism, as an experience, may not come with its regular display. So, a cold feeling without showing it intentionally, is possible. It is also possible to feel cold and it does not appear with the external displays of a cold experience. Scientific Method for Human Intelligence The only scientific method for what human intelligence is, can be obtained by modeling how intelligence works - in the brain. It is this architecture that can be used for comparison with other organisms and AI. Even if the same mechanisms are not present, there are brackets of outcomes that maybe used. For example, if there is an action of a component [of intelligence] in the brain, for [say] creativity, if other organisms don't have it, but can do what that component and the process does, then it can be used for comparison - including with magnitude. However, what really is intelligence? What is a universal definition that describes what intelligence is, based on the brain? Intelligence is [defined as] the use of memory. Simply, when memory is used, especially for desired or expected objectives, it means intelligence. Evading a predator, collecting a prey, building and maintaining habitats, and so forth, are all usages of memory for desired or expected objectives. Variation of intelligence include creativity, innovation, problem-solving, circumspect or stealth mode, tactics, investigations, planning, and so forth. So, whatever sensory data or memory data is available [or reachable] can be used. Memory can be assumed to be destinations, and the relays - across those destinations - as the use of them. Training, towards intelligence, can be described as showing how to use sensory or memory data for expected or desired outcomes. Simply, training can be described as the identification [or development] of memory data, and defining [or making] of paths that makes the destinations excellently used. In the brain, all memory and intelligence activities...

Wikipedia tells me that The Freedom Train visited Bridgeport, Connecticut, on October 3, 1949, and I was honored to have a visit by a neighboring family.I remember it was on a siding near that area of our city known as Black Rock. The gleaming white locomotives and coaches were parked on an industrial siding, which was accessible by foot and car, unlike the freight yard near my home.I don't remember much about the incident except to say the crowd was large but extremely orderly and quick-moving. The “traffic” was one-way; we boarded one car and exited at the far end of the second car.Viewers were ushered onto the train by marines in green uniforms; it was a warm evening. We were directed through two air-conditioned cars, which contained copies of The Mayflower Compact, a display of Henry at Agincourt (signing of the Magna Carta), and finally, a copy of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia benefited from US President Donald Trump's first administration, as Chinese companies re-routed shipments to these regions to avoid US tariffs. In his current term, President Trump's reciprocal tariffs aim to eliminate this arbitrage, but the significant tariff rate differentials between countries are creating an even greater incentive for Chinese companies to use transshipments. US efforts to enforce tariffs have become a game of whack-a-mole, according to Ebehi Iyoha, a trade economist and an assistant professor at Harvard Business School. Iyoha also highlights how small US businesses are disproportionately affected by tariffs compared with large corporations. Evading her seemingly German captors, Simone learns from Mrs. Davis that she must seek the Holy Grail. But Wiley and his resistance believe the quest is just to prove Simone will be a good custodian in the algorithm's data center. Which, of course, he wants her to do so they can destroy the source of Mrs. Davis. Meanwhile, Simone confronts more of her past as the machine tries to push her toward the mission. Wait, is Wiley in on it too? Erik gets confused about Justin's hot take on star Betty Gilpin. Justin thanks the Patrons for introducing him to yet another secret show. He also finds a surprising respite from modern life. The pair get lost in Las Vegas despite Mrs. Davis taking place in Reno. A wild (but subdued) David Arquette appears. Erik recalls one funny and surreal thing to emerge from the Los Angeles wildfires. Justin explains why hits to the liver are so intense. At some point, Erik starts to worry that the show stole his brain. "Zhe Germans" leads to something surprising and Erik pitches Glen Powell for an unlikely reboot.

The episode dives deep into the standard practices in industrial settings, such as operators shutting down power plants for safety and the lack of forensic investigation into equipment failures. Lesley emphasizes the importance of integrating cybersecurity into these environments, pointing out that many failures are due to maintenance or human error, though a notable portion does involve cyber threats. Listeners will learn about the challenges and necessary collaborations between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) teams. The discussion addresses cultural and trust barriers that hinder effective cybersecurity measures and advises on how organizations can improve their defenses regardless of size and resources. Lesley also highlights the evolving landscape of cyber threats, including the increasing sophistication of adversaries and the vulnerabilities caused by standardizations in industrial systems. Real-world examples underscore the complexity of securing these environments, emphasizing the need for proactive and informed cybersecurity practices, such as "cyber-informed engineering." Tune in to better understand the critical intersections of cybersecurity and industrial operations, and learn practical strategies to safeguard essential services. Key Moments:  05:00 IT-OT miscommunication leads to cybersecurity risks. 09:23 IT processes are too slow; bypassing is required for solutions. 11:36 Leaving an outdated system may pose less risk. 15:09 Slow changes in OT due to unforeseen impacts. 19:17 Include cybersecurity in root cause analysis discussions. 20:31 Nation-states analyze and bypass industrial control systems. 25:40 Cybersecurity is essential to combat potential system threats. 29:27 Communication, champions, and leadership crucial for cybersecurity. 31:37 Cybersecurity struggle due to resources community helps. 35:03 OT vs. IT language differences affect incident classification. 38:08 Empowered safety culture prevents accidents and retribution. 40:22 Few people have diverse cybersecurity skills and experience. 45:05 Experience across all 17 critical infrastructure verticals. 48:29 Evading detection in the nuclear enrichment process. 51:25 Identify industrial devices, build security program. About the guest :  Lesley Carhart is a renowned cybersecurity expert specializing in industrial control systems (ICS) security. With a keen understanding of the convergence between traditional IT and operational technology (OT), Lesley has been at the forefront of safeguarding critical infrastructures. Her work emphasizes the vulnerabilities of human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and programming devices, which are increasingly resembling typical computers and thus becoming prime targets for malware and ransomware attacks. Lesley's insights highlight the significant risks posed by these hybrid systems, underscoring the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in protecting essential processes. Living the Dream, Facing the Nightmare: An Interview with Alan C. Mack This week's Team Never Quit guest is a decorated war hero and an extraordinary pilot whose military career spanned nearly 36 years, including 17 years in Army Special Operations. Alan C. Mack, a retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5), shares his incredible journey from a young man with a passion for flying to a highly respected leader in some of the most elite units of the U.S. military. Alan's expertise and leadership saw him involved in numerous high-stakes operations, many still classified. One of the most notable missions he discusses is the Battle of Takur Ghar, also known as the Battle of Roberts Ridge, during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan. Alan's bravery and skill under fire, including crash-landing a helicopter and attempting multiple rescue missions under heavy enemy fire, highlight his exceptional courage. Alan's distinguished service has earned him numerous awards, including the Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Bronze Stars, ten Air Medals (one with a Valor device), and many more. His impressive flight record includes over 6,700 flight hours, with more than 3,200 hours under Night Vision Goggles. After retiring from the military, Alan continued to serve his community. He now works as the Deputy Commissioner of Emergency Services for Orange County, New York, a role that he appreciates for its peaceful nature compared to his military experiences. Alan's story is one of resilience, dedication, and the pursuit of one's dreams. Despite the adversities and challenges faced in combat, his journey is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome and find meaning in serving others. His life is an inspiration, showing that with determination and courage, it's possible to live out your dreams while also facing and conquering the nightmares. This episode will leave you both inspired and reflective. In This Episode You Will Hear: • The biggest cause of an air refueling incident is the grohe – it's a big hose – you are actually only 19' from rotors to tanker. (26:26) • [During air refueling] You're doing 110-120mph over the water. (27:00) • I've done air refueling as low as 100' off the coast of Iraq. (27:08) • I get a missile fired at me so now I drop down between buildings. I'm down on the rooftops and you know what's in front of me? Kites. Hundreds and hundreds of kites. (34:10) • The older [Chinook helicopter] Delta models just had handheld maps. (43:34) • [During Operation Red Wings] I sat down with the A10's and the AC130's with my map and the imagery and said “I need you to either suppress or creative a diversion that's so big no one could help but look. (50:15) • Crew Chiefs sometimes see things that aren't there (and I hate to say it that way) but sometimes they'll see lights of a car and think they're seeing signal light signals. (53:28) • Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. (55:00) • My youngest son was a Night Stalker Flight Engineer, and my oldest son is a Navy F18 wizzo (back seater) He's a Goose. (58:05) • I did 17 years with the Night Stalkers, plus about 10 years of deployment. (59:03) • Every aircraft munition has a probable kill ratio. A surface to air missile has a “PK” of 75%, meaning that if they fired at you, you have a 75% chance of killing you. The ground has a 100% PK. (64:23) • I've got about 3,500, maybe 4,000 hours of night vision time, which is a lot. (67:51) • Anaconda was a conventional operation, such as Red Wings. There's no soft component to it. (68:57) • We had 4 or 5 people on the aircraft tail, and we are diving at about 150, [one of our men that fell out but is tethered] while they're shooting at us and his toes are tickling the trees. The crew chief is returning fire with an M60 machine gun. He looks over and pulls our guy up, and I learned we had lost Neil [another guy] and decided we've gotta go back. So I turned inbound and climbed back up and the controls stopped moving. Imagine you pulled the keys out of your car. That's what it's like with no hydraulics. So I'm like “Guys… we're done,” as in “We're going to die.” (79:03) • In the spirit of never quit, there's a saying: ”Never quit flying the aircraft.” (83:22) • Everything I do in life, I associate with movies I've seen. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Following Tuesday morning's landmark High Court ruling which found that there is no legal basis for excluding Haredi men from the military draft, yesterday, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Yuli Edelstein delayed a vote on a Defense Ministry-backed “draft Security Service Law” due to what he said was a failure to reach a “broad consensus” on the matter. What should we make of this breaking of Likud party ranks? Yesterday, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and US President Joe Biden's administration announced that progress had been made toward resolving what Jerusalem considers to be an insufficient flow of arms from the United States to Israel. Horovitz breaks down the situation as we know it and describes how this may affect a potential war with Hezbollah. Tonight, US President Joe Biden and former US president Donald Trump will meet in Atlanta for a debate moderated by CNN's Dana Bash and Jake Tapper. What could be on the table? Horovitz weighs in on the upcoming July 4 British elections in which Labour leader Keir Starmer is projected to win a vast parliamentary majority.
