Tom Holland appeared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and with a drum roll announced that Spider-Man 4 officially begins shooting next summer. This information is coupled with an announcement from Sony that the release date is July 24, 2026. 20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell sat down with The Hollywood Reporter recently to discuss the future of their filmmaking division under Disney. Asbell seemed to Mirror other disney subsidiaries with it's assurance that a focus on franchise films is the path of the future. They will likely continue franchises such as Avatar, the Alien-verse, and Planet of the Apes, plus Kenneth Branagh's Agatha Christie mystery adaptations will continue though it's not clear if Branagh is attached. Among other films discussed were a Master and Commander prequel, Something with Die Hard, the next Predator movie (two are coming out and one is a secret), and the possibility of a Speed 3.  Writer Steven Knight has left the Rey Star Wars movie. Knight replaced the original screenwriters just last March, but this looks to be another delay to the development of the film. Notably Knight has been busy, working on the screenplays for the Peaky Blinders feature film, an upcoming biopic starring Angelina Jolie, and several tv series. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still slated to direct the future Rey movie. Venom: The Last Dance stumbled a bit in its choreography during last week's release in the U.S. with a $51 million dollar opening, but danced to success globally for a total $175 million including $46 million in China, which is the best superhero movie opening in that country since 2019. Sony is pleased with these numbers and well they should be, as the movie did take the top spot over Smile 2, which fell 59 percent. Universal's Oscar baby Conclave opened to $6.5 million, which tied it with The Wild Robot's fifth weekend's earnings. And the Andrew Garfield/Florence Pugh romantic drama We Live in Time came in fifth with $4.8 million. While promoting Robert Zemeckis' film Here, Paul Bettany confirmed that production begins on the Vision series in 2025. Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star in Disney's upcoming Prince Charming movie with Paul King attached to direct. AppleTV+ has unveiled a new trailer for Severance season 2. Severance will premiere on the streamer on Jan. 17, 2025, followed by an episode every Friday through March 21 for a 10 episode season. Ahead of its season 6 debut in December, drama series Virgin River has been renewed for a seventh season at Netflix. With the early renewal, Virgin River becomes Netflix's longest-running current original scripted series. An action comedy film adaptation of retro video game Oregon Trail is in early development at Apple. Will Speck and Josh Gordon are attached to direct and produce. EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will provide original music and produce via their Ampersand production banner. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the movie will feature a couple of original musical numbers Michael Cera, William H. Macy, and Emilia Jones have joined the cast of Paramount's The Running Man. Netflix has renewed its animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft for a second season. The pickup was a relatively quick one, coming just two weeks after the eight-episode first season premiered. First images have surfaced from Spider-Noir, the Amazon series that will star Nicolas Cage in the title role. Sources tell Deadline that a new English-language Squid Game series is in the works at Netflix, with David Fincher coming on to develop it. Sony Pictures announced that Jumanji 3 is set to hit theaters Dec. 11, 2026. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan starred in the first two films and are expected to return, as is director Jake Kasdan, who helmed both features.

On this episode of Paid in Puke, we analyze Susanna Fogel's 2023 thriller, Cat Person based on the 2017 short by Kristen Roupenian, and adapted for the screen by Michelle Ashford, who was the showrunner for Masters of Sex, but most importantly, wrote the teleplay to the abortion episode of 21 Jump Street. The film stars Emilia Jones, Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, and Nicholas Braun. We all had very different feelings about this film, both from our initial watch together in the theater, and after our analytical watches for the pod. Journey with us as we discuss how heavy-handed a metaphor we can tolerate; why Fogel might have tried a bit too hard to cater to a male audience, at the film's expense; the surprisingly problematic element of the source material; and how Nicholas Braun perfected towing the line between awkward and creepy.  Plus: Did Harrison Ford ruin a generation of men?

Ronald Reagan is a president most people know by name, picture, and sound bite.  He had more than a few very important decisions to make while in the White House and, sadly, this film doesn't cover all of those defining moments as it is based on a 2006 book, "The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism."  As always- we do suggest watching this but know that this film takes a handful of jelly beans when it wanted to take just a few of one color.      0:18:00 - Box Office and upcoming releases. 0:33:35 *** What's Streaming  *** AMAZON THE WHALE, Dir. For this cycle's "Mise-Unseen" entry, Madeline, Emilio and Julian finally pony up for Apple TV Plus subscriptions and see 'CODA', Sian Heder's 2021 Best Picture winning film.  Like the Joni Mitchell classic at the heart of this film, the trio can't help but see both triumphantly good and puzzlingly frustrating aspects to 'CODA'.  For all the powerful and winning scenes with the Rossi family (that scene on the pickup truck!), there are clunky and shallow ones with most every other peripheral character.  For all the great ways this film centers and empowers its deaf actors and main characters, it also short changes the viewer with an overly predictable narrative.  And this group of musicians can't help but weigh in on the music plot line.  From up and down, and still somehow, there is genuine appreciation for this film, but not without some nits to pick.    For those who are deaf or hearing impaired, a full written transcript for this episode can be found on this episode's Buzzsprout link!https://www.buzzsprout.com/2269866/14621363And If you enjoy our podcast, please consider writing us a positive review on your podcast platform of choice.  It really helps us be shared and enjoyed by others!Follow us on IG and Tik Tok! @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.com!On Letterboxd?  Follow Julian @julian_barthold and Madeline @patronessofcats

Milly Alcock, known for her breakout performance in HBO's House of the Dragon, has been cast as Supergirl in James Gunn's upcoming DC Universe movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Alcock was picked ahead of Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly for the coveted role. The film, based on a 2022 comic book series and written by Ana Nogueira, will feature Alcock portraying a darker and more hardcore version of Supergirl, deviating from the traditional portrayal of the character. The movie, part of Gunn's and Safran's new DC Universe projects, is highly anticipated, and Alcock's performance is expected to add a unique dimension to the superhero narrative.

Daredevil is not the only Netflix series confirmed now as MCU canon - the entire Defenders saga can be seen within the MCU Timeline on Disney+. This is a big deal for fans of the Netflix shows who have called for them to be canonized for years. The Defenders shows fit into the timeline starting with Daredevil after I Am Groot and ending with The Punisher before Doctor Strange. There's also a rumor Deborah Ann Wolf and Elden Hansen are set to return as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson in Daredevil: Born Again.  Trekkies will soon see their favorite franchise back on the big screen with director Toby Haynes on the bridge in the captain's chair. Haynes recently directed several episodes of the Star Wars hit show Andor. With Seth Grahame-Smith writing and JJ Abrams' Bad Robot producing, it has been 8 years since the last Star Trek movie - though this one is to take place decades before the 2009 Star Trek movie plot. Paramount has had recent Star Trek success in the television world, streaming Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Picard, and Discovery. Though this prequel may not show the Chris Pine-led cast we are used to seeing, there are still plans to have a final movie with that crew in the future.  We keep talking about Tom Cruise and now for an even bigger announcement…a Top Gun 3 movie is officially in development to bring back that loving feeling. Top Gun: Maverick writer Ethan Kruger is already writing for the new installment and sources report director Joe Kosinski will also be back to pilot the film. This news comes to us shortly after the partnership announced with Cruise and Warner Bros. Discovery. Top Gun: Maverick raked in an astounding $1.5 billion in 2022 and Cruise looks like he's willing to continue the legacy with a third film. Rumors are flying that DC Studios will begin their search for a Supergirl actress soon.  In the mix for frontrunners we have Milly Aycock of house of the dragon, Emilia Jones from Coda and Locke and Key, and Meg Donnelly of the Zombies franchise and DC Animation where she plays supergirl. James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow movie in 2022 based on the comics by Tom King.  Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the director and writer of the 2002 zombie horror film 28 Days Later, are reuniting for 28 Years Later, a sequel to the original. The pair are hoping to launch a trilogy of films set in the universe. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss opened up for the first time about their canceled Star Wars movie in the cover story for last week's Hollywood Reporter, stating that the concept for their film dealt with the rise of the first Jedi and how the Jedi Order came to be. The Last of Us Season 2 has cast Beef star Young Mazino as Jesse. The series is expected to start production soon. Isabela Merced has also been cast as Dina. Barbie and Shang-Chi star Simu Liu will host the 2024 People's Choice Awards which will air live on NBC, E!, and Peacock on February 18. Director David Gordon Green, who was initially set to direct a sequel to last year's Exorcist: Believer titled Exorcist: Deceiver, has exited the project. Universal originally planned for the film to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, but the timetable is now unclear as the studio searches for a new director. Noah Hawley, the showrunner of the upcoming FX series "Alien," revealed in an interview that the series is set on Earth approximately 70 years in the future, preceding the events of the original film series. Despite discussions with Ridley Scott, Hawley explained that he won't incorporate the backstory from "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" into his series, expressing a preference for the original films' retro-futuristic technology over the more advanced tech featured in the prequels.

EPISODE 1384: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to BOTTOMS UP AND THE DEVIL LAUGHS author Kerry Howley about her journey through the Deep State and what this suggests about the existence of "truth" and "reality" in contemporary America Kerry Howley is an essayist, screenwriter, and the author of Thrown, a New York Times Notable Book, New York Times Editor's Choice, and pick for best-of-the-year lists in Time, Salon, Slate, and many other venues. Writing in Salon, Lydia Kiesling called Thrown “extraordinary,” “incredibly bracing,” and “reminiscent of some of the boldest voices of twentieth-century fiction.” Novelist Lev Grossman called it “probably the most bizarre and fascinating book I've read this year” in the pages of Time, adding: “The precision of Howley's prose reminds me of Joan Didion or David Foster Wallace. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy once again experienced this year's Sundance from the comfort of their domiciles, but that in no way affected their viewing numbers. In just a sampling of what they saw, they discuss over 25 films including documentaries about Michael J. Fox, Brooke Shields, freediving, our evolvement with the camera and the strange saga of a bootleg video store. They talk about some of their favorite midnight selections along with divisive tales of dating, bodybuilding and workplace relationships all featuring the festival's theme of the year – man babies. Gael Garcia Bernal inspires as a luchador while David Strathairn and Jane Levy put next year's award ballots on notice. Searchlight Pictures has a great new romcom coming to Hulu and bought a hilarious mockumentary from Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman and Ben Platt. All that plus new films from Brandon Cronenberg and Nicole Holofcener are at the center of a pretty solid festival with titles you should take note of now. 0:00 - Intro 5:18 – Kim's Video 14:09 – Fantastic Machine 17:38 – The Deepest Breath 26:15 – Birth/Rebirth 33:41 – Talk To Me 39:50 – Cat Person 45:31 – Fair Play 54:14 – Still: A Michael J. This week's episode is pretty special, most of the time when my guests choose a film or a tv show, it's picked because they enjoy it or they've been wanting to check it out. My friend that is on here this week is actually a CODA, Child of Deaf Adults, her sister is also deaf, so this film was a lot closer to her than others we've done. The film was released in August of 2021 and is available to stream on Apple TV+, Apple bought the distribution rights for a record (at the time) $25 million after premiering at Sundance. It went on to win Best Motion Picture of the Year (the first movie produced by a streaming service to win Best Picture), Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Troy Kotsur became the first deaf actor to win an Oscar), and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars. The film was written and directed by Sian Heder (it was adapted from the French-Belgium film La Famille Bélier that was written by Victoria Bedos, Stanislas Carré de Malberg, Éric Lartigau, and Thomas Bidegain, and was directed by Éric Lartigau) and stars Marlee Matlin (first deaf actress to win Best Actress for Children of a Lesser God), Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, and Eugenio Derbez. I highly recommend checking the film out, it was very well deserving of winning Best Picture. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

The Doctor has a very limited first date repetoire: watching the destruction of Earth with weird aliens, visiting a far-future traffic jam full of weird aliens, seeing an entire marketing department being slaughtered by weird aliens, and stopping a gentle space whale from being endlessly tortured by English people. And his first date with Clara is no exception: hiring a space moped from a weird alien called Dor'een and visiting The Rings of Akhaten. Notes and links It's in her essay on The Bells of Saint John that El Sandifer says that the second part of Series 7 “is an extended exercise in not fucking up too badly that is, in everyone's eyes, undermined by fucking up at least once, though opinions differ on precisely where.” The Rings of Akhaten came ninth last in Doctor Who Magazine's First Fifty Years poll in 2014. (Yes, that's number 233, as Peter happened to remember with perfect accuracy.) You can find the rest of the results here. Time and the Rani came third last, so, you know. Emilia Jones, who played Merry in this episode, is 20 years old now, of course. In 2021, she starred in a film called CODA, in which she played Marlee Matlin's daughter. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2022. Full transcript: https://www.killercastingpod.com/podcast/episode/23cd3f8a/048-coda  ******************************** SHOW NOTES: Every once in a while a film comes along that simply transports you with its sheer brilliance — the brilliance of the sea shining on a bright, crisp Gloucester morning  CODA is one such film that approaches perfection. CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults) is many things at once, a coming of age story of a child finding her way into adulthood and independence; a rollicking chronicle of a loving hard working family; a damn funny movie that will in turn, touch, move, inspire and awe you. The success of a film like this hinges not so much on the story (it is a tale we have seen often), but on the casting of these wonderful roles who inhabit a world most of us have never experienced.  Ruby is the only hearing member of her family where her dad Frank, her mom  Jackie and her older brother Leo are all deaf. Those three roles are played by actors who are deaf in real life — which may seem like obvious casting choices, but in reality, actors who are deaf rarely get a chance to play roles this beautifully drawn. They rarely get to show off their astonishingly talent. But in this film, Troy Kotsur (who Lisa is starting a campaign right now for an Academy Award for this performance), Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant all get a chance to shine brightly. The precocious Ruby is portrayed in a tour-de-force by Emilia Jones. As final treat, look out for the spellbinding performance of Eugenio Derbez as Bernardo Villalobos, Ruby's music teacher.  In lesser hands, this film could easily have wallowed in mediocre cliche, but under the assured direction of Sian Heder and with that stellar cast, what shouldn't work does. What should be hackneyed, soars and what could easily be mawkish, will move you to tears. Joining us to give a true perspective on the portrayal of deaf characters in this film, is the amazing actress/writer/producer Antoinette Abbamonte who is also part of the deaf acting community in Hollywood. And a special shout out goes to our ASL interpreter Nicole Pancino who joined us for Antoinette's interview.   We could go ON for hours about this exquisite film .. in fact we almost do !   Enjoy

If there's any hope that writer-director Sian Heder has for her Sundance-winning film "CODA," it's for her actors to get the recognition they deserve. It's a fair hope that her actors, including deaf performers Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Daniel Durant, would receive accolades that so rarely come to performances like these. The Oscar-winning Matlin is one of the rare exceptions, though Heder notes Matlin still hasn't had the career she deserves. "CODA" centers on Ruby, a hearing child of deaf adults, played by newcomer Emilia Jones. Roughly 40% of the film is comprised of ASL, something that brought unique challenges for Heder. In a conversation with Next Best Picture, Heder discusses the missed opportunities she sees when creators avoid casting actors with a disability and why she wants the world to see Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant as major stars. Speaking of Troy Kotsur, watching "Children of a Lesser God" as a 17-year-old, he promised his friends that he would work with Marlee Matlin one day. Thirty-five years later, he's made good on that promise in "CODA." Kotsur still recalls the impact of seeing Sign Language on screen all those years ago. Though films like "Sound of Metal" and "Feeling Through" were nominated for Academy Awards just last year, it's still a rarity to see deaf representation at the movies, which is why Kotsur is honored to star in a film that could inspire a new generation of young people. In a conversation with Next Best Picture, Kotsur discussed how the story of "CODA" parallels his own family and how he collaborated with director Sian Heder to bring authenticity to the film.
