In the past 3.5 years, CCMG has funded and incubated 11 cannabis startups- all of which saw profit.Founder Rich Batenburg started the fund in 2015, shortly after Colorado legalized cannabis. He has since become one of Colorado’s most successful investors and has firsthand knowledge of the pitfalls and the upsides of investing in this fast moving industry. While his fund is clearly for HNWI’s (High Net Worth Individuals) with over $1M in liquid assets, this interview has plenty of useful information for RFLUs (Regular Folks Like Us).To get you started, here are 3 quick tips:Buy cannabis like you’re buying a car. Read the public filings. Get to know the business plan beyond “We’re gonna grow a bunch of weed and sell it.”Know your own horizon. If you want to make fast money you'll have a better chance if you can find a solid grow operation in a state that has just legalized. There is inevitable a scarcity of product at that point. If you’re more risk averse consider ancillary businesses like real estate that don’t touch the plant. Think pick and axes (or in the case of cannabis, brothels and bars).

In Peter Calfee’s case it did. And it kickstarted his very cool WeedTech business to boot!If medical cannabis is ever going to get the respect it deserves as a medicine, it’s going to have to do better than “Go home a pack a bowl.” It’s sort of hard to imagine a doctor or any healthcare provider ever saying, “Take a few hits and call me in the morning.”That’s one of the reasons I’m excited about the GoFire metered dose inhalers, which are due to hit the market in the next few months. Not only is GoFire a nifty convection vaporizer (which beats those cheap conduction vaporizers by a mile -- you’ll find the convection vs. conduction discussion midway in this episode), but it comes with an app that aims to offer patients a lot more insight and choice as to what meds to try for which conditions. As Peter Calfee, GoFire’s CEO and Founder, puts it: “GoFire is a Waze meets Yelp in the alternative health space.”One of the aims of medical cannabis is to find the lowest possible dose to find relief. High doses are not necessarily called for. To that end, we tried the GoFire and indeed, its ability to measure tiny, 2.5mg doses is impressive. Catch a video of it and the app in use here. And if you’re interested in trying one out, there’s a special introductory promotion for the Brave New Weed podcast community: You can get $200 off the GoFire’s $499 retail price by going to GoFire.co and using the code BRAVE!One last thing: Throughout this interview Peter refers to a “510.” No, it’s not the Oakland CA area code. “510” refers to the cheap pen vaporizers that are in use everywhere.

As a special promotion, listeners to the Brave New Weed podcast are eligible for a special $200 pre-order discount on the GoFire inhaler. Use the code: BRAVE. As the rest of the country inches toward legalization we thought it would be useful to head to Colorado, the first state to legalize, to see firsthand what the effects have been. We spent a few days in Denver, "the Mile High City," talking to experts, industry leaders and the media about their thoughts. The results were so interesting that we’ve decided to double up our production and bring you an episode every week for the next month. (There’s also tons of bonus content for our Patreon supporters, so be sure to check that out.) In this first episode, we connected with @Izzy_Blazee and @Sunnny.Daze, two micro-influencers who are making a living documenting their lives in cannabis on Instagram. Izzy calls herself the “Good Time Guru,” who specializes in content creation/consultation/motivation and inspiration. Sunnny is an "MMJ patient and CBD advocate" who specializes in marketing/branding/content creation. Their brands are unabashedly who they are and what they do. To see how these two women are showcasing the new face of cannabis to the world I suggest you follow them on The Gram. But to understand the impact of social media and influencer marketing on the new world of cannabis, and to learn the ins and outs of what they do and how they are growing their followings, I highly recommend you listen in to this enlightening interview with Blaze and Daze. And keep your eye out for mini-series Episode #2, coming at you in a week in addition to the bonus content with Ricardo Baca coming out this week exclusively to our Patreon supporters.
