The slow rolling legalization of cannabis in the United States is providing an interesting investment opportunity. Since Covid, cannabis sales are up tremendously. The legal industry is growing as more states legalize medicinal and/or recreational use. As large, licensed multiple state cannabis operations grow, they are increasingly cashflow positive. All of this despite having no access to the US banking system and paying a particularly high effective tax rate – frequently north of 70%.  In the beginning of 2021, banks, wary of unclear Federal law, began to prevent their brokerage clients from investment in public cannabis companies. Since that time, we've seen these stocks fall over 80% in valuation. At the same time, fundamentally, the businesses continue to grow and thrive.  As we speak, the lame duck Congress is considering legislation that would open up the banking system to state-licensed cannabis companies. My guest today addressing the state of the industry is Boris Jordan. Boris is the Founding Partner of cannabis-dedicated asset manager Measure 8 Venture Partners, as well as Chairman of Curaleaf, which he founded and built into the world's largest cannabis company. Prior to his current focus in cannabis, Boris had a legendary career as a banker and private equity manager in emerging markets starting in the 1990's.. Last week, President Biden issued an executive order pardoning thousands of marijuana offenders. Many people wanted the President to go further and reschedule the drug. But it's Congress, not the President, who has the power to do that. So why haven't they... despite a majority of voters supporting cannabis reform? John Hudak from the Brookings Institution joins Boyd with a look at why 2022 candidates aren't talking about it and what role voters play in holding politicians accountable. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by author and documentary filmmaker Greg Mitchell to discuss his newest work "The First Attack Ads: Hollywood vs. Upton Sinclair," out on PBS and streaming now! Sam and Emma first run through updates on Biden's Cannabis pardons, setting weed on the road to decriminalization, the escalating nuclear tensions in Ukraine, and more, before diving deeper into the Right funneling out their drug fearmongering on CNN to paint Biden's executive action as radical (despite mass support in public opinion). Then Digby joins as they parse through Biden's recent comments on nearing “nuclear armageddon” with Putin's continued aggression in Ukraine centering more and more on the threat of nuclear action, discussing the various channels of diplomacy between Biden and Putin, before exploring the greater role the United States has begun to play in this conflict, capitalizing on this opportunity to engage in a proxy war where our opponent is already severely weakened and likely to lose, and what a practically anti-war foreign policy would look like. They then reflect on the classic GOP fear-mongering tactics in the leadup to midterms, from the four-year buildup of ACA fear-mongering from 2010-14 to the 2018 “Caravan” that had Minnesotans worried, looking at the recent impact of Fox's “Fentanyl in the Halloween Candy” as a return to a small-scale classic. Then, Greg Mitchell joins as he dives into the story of Upton Sinclair, a writer and early muckraker who published an exposé on Chicago's Stock Yards, before using the success of FDR to jumpstart a mass socialist movement in California heading into the 1934 governor election, where he appeared likely to emerge on top. However, Mitchell then dives into the bipartisan and Hollywood-backed coalition that came together against him, essentially becoming the first example of a modern negative campaign, featuring cinematic attack ads, outside political parties, the use of political consultants, national fundraising, and the outsourcing of advertising to Madison Ave and Hollywood Boulevard. Mitchell, Sam, and Emma walk through the major electoral archetypes that came out of this movement against Sinclair, where we still see them today, and how the backlash to this campaign lead to the liberalization of Hollywood. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive deeper into the nuances around being anti-war and pro-Ukrainians, why the Hitler comparison is nonsense, and why Putin's nuclear capabilities have to be taken seriously. They also explore the GOP's withdrawal from Herschel Walker, with Georgia's Lt. Gov coming out against his credentials, tackle the impact of the current economic moment and the role of recession discourse, and watch Mark Kelly call out Blake Masters' resting rich face. Greg Gutfeld talks about the attractiveness of college students, Matt Walsh cares more about consent in cancel culture than in sex-with-minors, and the crew touches on Dr. Oz the puppy-killer, plus, your IMs! This week in our short recap of the week, a new poll has shown that Republican voters are overwhelmingly in favor for state legal/states rights cannabis markets with minimal federal regulation. Several congressional lawmakers have called the FDA as being a disappointment and their response being completely insufficient regarding CBD/hemp regulations. A prominent cannabis favoring congressman has called out drug testing as part of a modern day issue causing labor shortages and supply chain issues. The letter opens stating that, This one-page technical assistance, which took your agency nearly four months to provide in response to our request, is simply a reformatting of a document provided to Congress over two years ago. Reps. Kathleen Rice (D-NY), Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Angie Craig (D-MN) and Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) were the congress members behind the writing of the letter. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) has proposed that the drug testing standards for the workforce undergo changes. Noting the recent rail strikes that have been averted, he notes that the job has a requirement of specialized skills, but a job pool shrunk by drug testing requirements. These are requirements that place qualified candidates out of the running for job positions over items they ingested up to six weeks prior to a test. This also gets qualified workers disqualified from continuing with a job by drug test, when they were not intoxicated or consuming on the job. “A lot of these shortcomings in terms of the supply chain are that people do not qualify for the jobs because they've used marijuana sometime in the last six weeks, which doesn't affect their ability to do their job, but it throws them out of the consideration,” Blumenauer said. And it was a white man with her who alerted the police. But the police didn't take him into custody because he "looked like a nice guy." I'm talking about the death of Lauren Smith-Fields out of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The family has filed a notice to sue the police department over the investigation. It's been over a month since she died, and the cause of death has yet to be determined. There is so much to unpack with this story. The Fields' family attorney will join us tonight to help us understand the bizarre case. In Oklahoma, a white man is back behind bars after violating his bond in the murder of a black man whose body was buried under the white man's septic tank.   Flordia's Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing a bill aimed at prohibiting public schools and private businesses from making white people feel "discomfort," What does that even mean? A Florida state senator will try to explain what's happening down there. Black Mississippi lawmakers walk out as the state Senate passes an anti-Critical Race Theory Bill. Voting rights aren't the only unfulfilled campaign promises made by President Joe Biden. He made some about marijuana reform that he has yet to address. We'll talk to a cannabis activist who will explain how Biden has fallen short. More Black families are homeschooling their children, citing the pandemic and racism.
