Ever since the parent companies of King Soopers and Safeway agreed to a $24.6 billion merger back in 2022, many Denverites have been worried about the future of their neighborhood grocery stores. Colorado's Attorney General Phil Weiser investigated the deal and filed a lawsuit to block it back in February, and then the Federal Trade Commission followed with a challenge of their own a few weeks later. The FTC's case is going before a federal judge in Portland, Oregon, in a trial starting today, and Weiser's is set to begin here in Colorado next month. Host Bree Davies spoke with Weiser earlier this year about why he felt it was necessary to intervene. What do you think about King Soopers and Safeway merging? More than 200 new laws went into effect in Colorado this week, touching on everything from concert ticket pricing transparency to gig driver protections, and each of those laws has a backstory. One in particular comes after years of back and forth between lawmakers and Wyatt's Towing, the company Attorney General Phil Weiser found guilty of “deceptive and unfair business practices.” So will this new law finally protect Denverites from predatory towing? Denver Post reporter Sam Tabachnik has been reporting on Wyatt's for years, and he joins host Bree Davies to explain what you need to know about this new law. Nancy Whiteman, CEO of Colorado-based Wana Brands, has been called the “Martha Stewart of Edibles” by Entrepreneur magazine, but her path to becoming the “Queen of Legal Weed” (Inc. Magazine) hasn't always been easy. In this episode of Seed to CEO, Nancy talks with MJBiz CEO Chris Walsh about how she helped grow Wana Brands from a bootstrapped grassroots cannabis food manufacturer into an edibles empire across North America. She shares: How partnerships with other cannabis companies play a key role in Wana's expansion strategy. How expectations, such as consistency, have evolved alongside the sector. How the company has adapted to the constant, rapid changes within the legal cannabis industry. Who is Nancy Whiteman? Before founding Wana Brands in 2010, Nancy was a principal with The Whiteman Group, a sales and marketing consultancy, and held a range of senior-level marketing and business-development positions. The shift into cannabis edibles resulted from a casual conversation with an acquaintance, even though Nancy had no experience in the industry or in food manufacturing. But the company she built and the products it creates is now one of the most recognized edibles brands in the U.S. and Canada.

But the company she built and the products it creates is now one of the most recognized edibles brands in the U.S. and Canada.

Jeannette Horton is the executive director of NuLeaf Project, a project designed to build generational wealth for communities most affected by cannabis prohibition by providing funding, mentoring, and skill building. She shares her story on becoming involved in the cannabis business, and what led her to the realization that we greatly need to fix the racial divide in the industry. Ultimately, Jeannette’s cannabis related arrest served as inspiration to work in the industry. It took someone with the culinary skills of Anthony Bourdain and the persistence of a mad scientist to attack the edible dilemma. Meet Ron Silver. This episode is sponsored by Azuca. Go to AZUCA.CO and type in in BNW30. 5% of all sales go to the Last Prisoner Project. This code is good for two months.Back when we started this podcast we interviewed Ron Silver, then Chef and Owner of the NYC restaurant Bubby’s for nearly three decades. The title of “chef” isn’t really an accurate way to describe Ron. He’s an original, a painter, a writer, a thinker and, as it turned out, a home chemist, a restless, curious, creative -- the kind of person that makes New York a great place to live.Back in 2018, Ron was trying to solve the problem of edibles. He was unsatisfied having to wait hours for effects to kick in and most people he knew had no idea how to dose them. Edibles can be complicated to gauge because THC and CBD both have to pass through the digestive tract and then the liver, before they can be metabolized into the bloodstream. [Hint: If you’re new to edibles, start with 5 mg THC. If that doesn’t take you where you want to go, escalate to 10 mg. Go slow from there or you may find yourself cowering in a corner from over consuming]. As a chef, Ron was also bothered by the grassy, barnyard taste that cannabis oils tend to have once extracted.Fast forward to today and Ron has cracked the code of edible dosing and taste with his line of products called Azuca. The line has three products to date, CBD infused sugar, simple syrup and chocolate coins, and a whole lot more including some incredible THC “electrolytes” is on the way as you’ll learn in this podcast. He also struck a partnership deal with Wana Brands in Colorado, which earlier this year released Quick fast-acting gummies in Strawberry Margarita, Peach Bellini and Indici Pina Colada flavors. All produce delicious effects in 10-15 minutes using Azuca technology.Ron was one of the earliest supporters of this podcast. He is a great interview and I’m thrilled to have him back again. ##Dr. Chin has written another excellent blog on using cannabis meds to help COVID-related PTSD. First, the coronavirus pandemic brought the cannabis sector (and the markets) down. Then, cannabis bounced back, posting record sales and being labelled an essential service in most locations. How do you find the cannabis companies that will succeed during uncertain times? Look for those that have been doing it right, and have the track record to show it. For Indiva Limited (TSX-V:NDVA, OTC:NDVAF, Forum), the proof is in the rankings. The Ontario-based LP set out to produce the best cannabis edibles in the market, and through key partnerships and strong feedback, secured the top sales spots in Ontario. In fact, Indiva has managed to navigate the rough market and continue to grow its position. In March alone, the Company expanded its production license and secured a distribution partnership with award-winning edibles producer Wana Brands, Inc. How do they do it? Indiva’s President and CEO, Niel Marotta, recently spoke with Stockhouse Media to highlight how the Company has navigated the market, how the coronavirus pandemic affects everything, and what’s next for cannabis.
Nancy Whiteman, of Wana Brands, discusses operating in multiple markets that don't behave like one another -- for example, California and Illinois. She shares that "you have to approach every market kind of like the opposite of Groundhog Day. With a brand new set of rules. While you hope that there are learnings that you can bring from one market to another, sometimes you just have to say, my God, I'm on a different planet now, I'm not quite sure what I'm doing." Whiteman warns of the mindset of wanting to grow as quickly and as broadly as possible, as lowering prices to get on the shelves is a decision you can't step back from. She also discusses what might be next for Colorado now that House Bill 1090 has passed, the profound importance of picking exceptional partners to work with, being strategic about the markets you choose, THC v. CBD, and more.
Advertising and marketing opportunities for the cannabis industry have been severely limited by a mishmash of market-specific rules.
