For our 100th episode, we interview the man who introduced the world to Star Wars way back in November of 1976 – the one and only Alan Dean Foster. Alan Dean Foster ghostwrote Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, the original novelisation of Star Wars, released six months before the film and a month before the first teaser. It was Foster’s prose that introduced the world to Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, C-3PO, R2-D2, Governor Tarkin, Emperor Palpatine, the Jedi, the Sith and more. He went on to write the first Star Wars novel with an original storyline, 1978’s Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, before returning to the franchise for a prequel-era novel, 2002’s The Approaching Storm, and the much-hyped novelisation of The Force Awakens in 2015. He’s a storyteller, a world traveller and an athlete – he’s got more than 100 books to his name, as well as a world record in powerlifting, and he even studied karate with Chuck Norris! In this episode’s wide-ranging discussion, we talk to Alan Dean Foster about: Ghostwriting the original Star Wars novelisation for George LucasThe one question he asked George while writing the novelisation, and George’s answer The influence of Scrooge McDuck on George LucasThe evolution of Darth Vader and the EmpireBuilding the Expanded Universe on a budget in Splinter of the Mind’s Eye The intriguing differences between The Force Awakens script that he novelised and the finished film His backstory for the Journal of the WhillsHis alternative take on Episode IX His must-do travel recommendations His rejected Batman script How home video has changed the business of novelisations Breaking a powerlifting world record and studying karate with Chuck Norris Where he thinks Star Wars should go next And much more! At the time of the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Peter Cushing had been dead for more than 20 years. Instead of recasting the character of Governor Tarkin, Lucasfilm decided to digitally recreate the original actor. Was this a good idea? Let me share with you my thoughts. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pageturnerstheywerenot/support
"Rogue One" - And now for something completely different. Rebel spy Dan Moren and reckless criminal-turned-freedom-fighter Lex Friedman take a break from the story of the Skywalker clan to watch 2016’s Rogue One, the first of the standalone anthology movies set in the Star Wars universe. Hot topics include why droids are programmed with people-like personalities, why the Death Star flaws come in two separate parts, the convincing performance of Governor Tarkin, and hey, Jimmy Smits is back! Programming Note: In addition to this capsule episode, which contains our discussion before and after the film, members can watch along with Lex and Dan in a full-length commentary track, available in the members-only First Class feed. If you’re not already a member, why not sign up? And if you are, now’s a great time to update your membership allocations and maybe throw a little support in the direction of Not Playing. Thanks! Host Lex Friedman and Dan Moren.

This episode was recorded during the week of the 4th of July holiday and how better to celebrate than to cook up some brats and enjoy the company of friends and family. Governor Tarkin and Princess Leia put aside their differences for one day and joined us in the studio. How civil of them! Yivvits has been quite a busy Wookiee the past few weeks engineering and raising his pets. MrBubble tells us about his wonderful neighbors; a story any self respecting Star Wars nerd will appreciate. All this and so much more! Yivvits is attending the 2007 SOE Fan Faire in Las Vegas, August 2nd - 5th! Information about the Fan Faire can be found here: http://events.station.sony.com/fanfaire/
