With action, humor, and unforgettable characters, “Turtle Tracks” launches one of the most iconic cartoon franchises of the 1980s. The cartoon softened the darker tone of the original comics and turned the Turtles into a more family-friendly action-comedy series, helping make them one of the biggest cartoon franchises of the late 1980s and early 1990s. With its mix of martial arts, humor, mutant villains, and pizza-loving heroes, the show became a huge pop-culture hit and helped launch toys, movies, and more. Short cast list: • Cam Clarke — Leonardo • Townsend Coleman — Michelangelo • Barry Gordon — Donatello • Rob Paulsen — Raphael • Peter Renaday — Splinter • James Avery — Shredder • Renae Jacobs — April O'Neil

The Season 1 finale of STAR WARS: MAUL - SHADOW LORD delivered everything we hoped for: emotional betrayals, jaw-dropping visuals, terrifying horror vibes, and the long-awaited confrontation between Maul and Darth Vader. Richard and Sarah break down Chapters 9 and 10, from Dryden Vos and Crimson Dawn connections to Devon's tragic fall toward the dark side, and the MANY deaths along the way. Did Brander Lawson survive? We want your opinion, because Richard and Sarah are split! MAUL - SHADOW LORD composers Kevin, Deana, and Sean Kiner sneak in many musical references to "Duel of the Fates," "Battle of the Heroes," and "Anakin's Dark Deeds," all from the Prequel trilogy. We analyze how each of these callbacks help the overall storytelling of this series. One of the standout elements of the finale is Vader himself. His silent entrance through the misty forest instantly joins the ranks of iconic Vader reveals from A New Hope, Rogue One, and even Splinter of the Mind's Eye. The horror-inspired music, jump scares, and brutal fighting style made Vader feel unstoppable. Meanwhile, Maul manipulated events exactly as planned, allowing Devon's rage over Master Daki's death to push her into becoming his apprentice. The symbolism throughout the finale — broken bridges, collapsing temples, and fractured Jedi ideals — gave the battle emotional weight beyond the lightsaber clashes. We get into all of it! Is this the first Maul vs Vader battle in Star Wars history? While it's their first major onscreen showdown, the two previously dueled in the 2001 comic Star Wars Tales #9. Richard and Sarah explore that deep-cut Expanded Universe story. PODCAST SPONSORS Small World Vacations is an official sponsor of Skywalking Through Neverland. Character Design Issues: Turtles' designs were criticized as grotesque, reducing relatability and making action scenes less believable. Storytelling Problems: Over-explained plots, especially regarding April O'Neil and Eric Sacks, bogged down the movie's pacing and clarity. Setting Conflicts: The film's setting away from New York City limited key identity elements and iconic landmarks associated with the turtles. Mixed Reception of Cast: Alan Ritchson as Raphael received praise, while others like Johnny Knoxville and Megan Fox faced criticism for their roles. Cultural Context Matters: The film reflected a 2014 era not fully embracing nerd culture, impacting its creative choices and audience reception. Notes Production and Narrative Challenges This 2014 Ninja Turtles movie struggled with a lack of creative love and identity, making it feel like a disjointed and ashamed adaptation of the franchise (00:00). Identity Crisis and Shame Factor heavily influenced the movie's tone and plot, with the film almost dropping the "Teenage Mutant" part and considering alien origins for the turtles (11:31). The film's producers inserted convoluted backstory elements mid-production to "course correct" a script that initially strayed far from the core Ninja Turtles mythos. This led to an over-explained, bogged-down narrative that felt like a "walk of shame" rather than an embrace of the IP's strengths. The era's mainstream culture had not fully embraced nerd properties, causing awkward attempts at modernization and distancing. Plot Bloat and Over-Explanation detracted from the movie's pacing and engagement, especially with April O'Neil's bloated and often unconvincing reporter storyline (20:53). Scenes focus too long on generic Michael Bay-style action and April's personal struggles rather than on the turtles themselves. The turtles are introduced late and spend much of the runtime as shadowy figures rather than engaging characters. Convoluted Villain Backstory with Eric Sacks as an unnecessary intermediary between Shredder and the turtles, adding complexity that did not improve the story (01:10:14). Removing or significantly trimming Sacks' role was proposed as a way to streamline the narrative. Mismatch in Tone and Style was evident, with the movie trying to be serious and gritty while relying on CGI-heavy, unrealistic action sequences that lacked tangible physicality (35:42). The film's heavy use of CGI and complex mech suit for Shredder overshadowed traditional martial arts choreography that defines the franchise. Character and Design Issues The film's character portrayals and designs undermined the essence of the Ninja Turtles, alienating fans and harming engagement (28:35). Turtle Designs Were Widely Disliked for being oversized, grotesque, and overly detailed with "human teeth" that made them less relatable and more monstrous (29:50). Their giant size and bulletproof nature reduced the importance of their ninja skills and made fight scenes less believable. Complex textures and too many visual details caused action scenes to become "CGI mush," making it hard to focus on key movements. Character Imbalance and Focus on Raphael turned the movie into essentially a Raphael-centric story, sidelining the other turtles and undermining the team dynamic (56:20). Alan Ritchson's portrayal of Raphael was praised as the best casting and performance in the film. Other turtles like Leonardo and Donatello were underused; Michelangelo was poorly written as an overly sexualized and annoying character. April O'Neil's Role and Writing were criticized for being unconvincing and bloated, with her professional competence and motivations feeling unrealistic and distracting (26:00). The forced "chosen one" connection between April and the turtles was seen as unnecessary and cheapened her acceptance of them. Supporting Characters like Will Arnett's cameraman were noted as relatively decent additions, providing human perspective and some humor without overwhelming the story (48:42). Setting and Visual Context The movie's setting choices and visual style weakened the core appeal of the franchise, distancing it from the turtles' iconic New York City roots (43:58). Misplaced Setting Outside New York City for large portions of the movie conflicted with the turtles' identity as New York City teens and vigilantes (44:50). Much of the film occurs in an ambiguous upstate New York mansion and mountain, disconnected from the urban environment central to the turtles' story. This choice limited opportunities to showcase iconic city landmarks and the turtles' connection to their home turf. Visual Style Reflects 2010s Orange-Teal Trend, which while vibrant, was harsh and contributed to a stylized look that did not fit the tone of the movie (16:45). Snowboarding and Chase Sequences were seen as fun and reminiscent of video game-inspired action but felt out of place and disconnected from the turtles' core habitat (48:42). These sequences resembled arcade game levels rather than integrated story moments. Proposed Fixes and Editorial Improvements A major consensus was that the movie could be improved significantly by cutting down excess plot and focusing much earlier and more on the turtles themselves (01:09:02). Streamline April's Story and Cut Eric Sacks to reduce narrative bloat and confusing backstory (01:10:14). Compress April's investigation into one clear sequence, eliminating multiple instances of Foot Clan encounters and confusing plot threads. Remove or minimize Sacks to focus villainy on Shredder and the Foot Clan. Introduce the Turtles Sooner and Add More Teenage Interactions to showcase their personalities and team dynamics earlier in the movie (01:10:14). Incorporate scenes like the elevator banter to emphasize their teenage traits and humor. Sprinkle in more Foot Clan fights to build suspense and showcase ninja action throughout. Focus on Making the Final Third Action-Packed but Clear, allowing the action sequences to flow without unnecessary interruptions (01:10:14). Keep the fight choreography that works, such as the Shredder vs. Splinter sequence, while trimming excess. Possible Reshoots or Edits to downplay or rework problematic story elements like April's "chosen one" status and the lab origin flashbacks (01:19:47). Use existing footage more efficiently to maintain story coherence while trimming excess. Emphasize Fun and Character Chemistry earlier to avoid the film feeling "all tension" and "boring" (01:15:07). Add small moments of levity, camaraderie, and ninja antics before the big action scenes. Maintain Realistic Expectations about how much could be changed given the film's production timeline and 2014-era constraints (01:25:21). Cast and Performances Certain casting choices were praised while others detracted from the film's overall impact on character believability (03:51). Alan Ritchson as Raphael was widely considered the best fit and performance, capturing Raphael's classic loner and heartfelt traits well (51:05). His emotional speech and portrayal of Raphael's arc were highlights. Johnny Knoxville as Leonardo was underused and miscast, with his limited screen time failing to do justice to the character (53:34). Megan Fox's April O'Neil was critiqued for lacking investment and acting strength, which weakened the emotional core of her storyline (24:35). Will Arnett's Cameraman Character was a positive surprise, providing light humor and a grounded human viewpoint without dominating the narrative (48:42). Whoopi Goldberg's Role was underutilized and seen as wasted potential given her talent (28:35). Franchise and Cultural Context The film reflects the cultural and franchise environment of the early 2010s, impacting its creative choices and reception (14:07). 2014 Era Nerd Culture Not Fully Embraced, leading to awkward attempts at modernization and distancing from the core turtle identity (14:07). The movie's shame about being a Ninja Turtles film echoes similar issues seen in early Transformers films. Comparisons with Other Ninja Turtles Iterations show this movie as weaker, especially compared to its sequel and animated projects like Mutant Mayhem that clearly love the source material (02:41). The sequel "Turtles Out of the Shadows" was noted as far more fun and faithful. Discussion of the Franchise's Multi-Generational Appeal highlighted the turtles' ability to adapt but also underscored the risk of losing core essence through unnecessary changes (06:18). Audience Distrust and Over-Explanation reflects a production that did not trust viewers to accept the turtles as they are, leading to excessive exposition and forced justifications (18:04). Product Placement and Minor Details like Windows Phones on characters' devices were noted as subtle but fun touches (01:02:00). There is something really powerful about hearing from someone who has lived through those years and can reflect back on them with perspective. And Dr. Traci has quite a story. In this first part of our conversation, we talk about what it looked like for her to have her first baby during residency, the realities of postpartum recovery while still in training, and the decisions physician moms often have to make around timing pregnancies and careers. We also talk about:What maternity leave looked like during residency years agoRecovering from a difficult delivery while preparing to return to workThe importance of asking for help—even when it feels uncomfortableMoving to a new city with a toddler while pregnant againWhat life looked like when her marriage ended shortly after starting her attending careerDr. Traci shares honestly about some very hard years—two babies under two, a new job, a new city, and navigating life as a physician mom. She also talks about the support systems that helped her through that season and the lessons she carries with her now. This conversation is thoughtful, candid, and full of perspective that many physician moms rarely get to hear.

Issue #13 drops a massive bombshell with Ujigami's true identity being Splinter. When you decided to make him the force hunting the Turtles' enemies, what was the emotional core you wanted readers to feel first — shock, tragedy, or inevitability?2. Ujigami isn't just a villain; he's a moral crisis for the Turtles. Was your goal to make this run less about defeating an enemy and more about redefining what justice means for the team?3. In #14, the brothers split up to protect their former enemies from Splinter. That's such a powerful reversal of classic TMNT dynamics — what does this say about how the Turtles have grown since their early days of black-and-white morality?4. You've written a lot about identity and duality in your career. How did that background influence your approach to Splinter becoming Ujigami — a mentor turning into something almost mythic and terrifying?5. Shinigami's introduction brings in mysticism from the 2012 animated series. What made this moment in your run feel right for folding her into IDW continuity, and how did you retool her to fit the tone of your story?6. Your first two issues lean hard into supernatural elements — ninja mythology, death spirits, and destiny. Was that a conscious pivot from recent TMNT runs that focused more on politics and street-level crime?8. You've said the Turtles work in any genre. With Ujigami and Shinigami, you're clearly leaning into horror and dark fantasy — were there specific myths, folktales, or manga influences that shaped this arc?9. You and Freddie E. Williams II are creating some striking, eerie imagery in these issues. How did your collaboration evolve once you realized this arc would live in such a darker, more mystical space?10. With Ujigami revealed and Shinigami now in play, it feels like the table has finally been set for the larger story you and Freddie have planned. Without giving anything away, what should readers be emotionally bracing for as this arc unfolds — heartbreak, redemption, or something even more unexpected?11. If the Turtles had to explain Ujigami to April in the most “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” way possible — full of bad metaphors and half-accurate summaries — which brother would do the worst job, and what would his explanation sound like?

Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth wrap up their conversation with IU historian Bill Murphy, exploring the Hurrying Hoosiers era, legendary shooters, early NIL deals, and the dramatic transition from Branch McCracken to Lou Watson that paved the way for Bob Knight. The Splendid SplinterBill shares unforgettable stories about Jimmy Rayl's two 56-point performances, including how Rayl insisted he would've scored 80 against Michigan State if Branch hadn't pulled him with four minutes left—and how 17 of his makes would've been three-pointers. Mike recounts witnessing an elderly Rayl at a Larry Bird exhibition game, calibrating his first shot then draining seven straight from Steph Curry range, hitting nothing but net each time.Early NIL and Record-Breaking ReboundsBill reveals a forgotten piece of IU history: Walt Bellamy was promised a car by a Bloomington auto dealer if he set the Big Ten rebounding record. During the final home game, Branch McCracken and Jimmy Rayl sat on the bench with a gum wrapper and golf pencil, tracking every rebound to make sure Bellamy earned his wheels. Bellamy's 33-rebound performance still stands as the Big Ten record.Watson's Rollercoaster RideLou Watson inherited disaster in 1965—just 120 points returning after seven seniors left—and finished tied for ninth (dead last) in his first year. But he engineered the first last-to-first turnaround in Big Ten history the very next season, winning the 1967 championship. Bill then reveals the shocking reason Watson's final team collapsed: two players stopped passing to each other because they were dating the same girl, derailing what should've been a championship run with one of IU's greatest recruiting classes.Branch's Final StandWhen doctors told Branch a heart attack meant retirement, he shocked everyone by celebrating: "How many people know how they're gonna die? I'm still coaching." Bill also shares his lingering frustration with AD Bill Orwig, who accused Branch of illegal recruiting and forced him to take a lie detector test, and praises Lou Watson's grace in helping Bob Knight transition into the program. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The turtles experience legitimate family drama and we are properly introduced to The Shredder in a fantastically memorable scene. We ponder about the meaning of fatherhood as embodied by Shredder and Master Splinter.
If the mandalorian and Grogu movie is about this ancient artifact crystal that allows any force user to amplify their powers, then I think this could be pretty fun. This would force (no pun intended) Jedi and Sith, light and dark remaining in the galaxy, along with bounty hunters like Mando and Boba Fett to hunt down this item. It would be a rat race. This power crystal is a concept from the very first sequel idea to the original Star Wars movie, created in the book Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster. 25 PERCENT OFF EVERYTHING AT THEORY SABERS and more https://theorysabers.com/ - get your holiday gifts now SANTA25 at checkout Ani III - The Chosen One - https://www.theorysabers.com/product/hilt-ani3 Prodigal Son V1 (Affordable Version) - https://www.theorysabers.com/product/hilt-lukev1 HATS and MERCH - https://www.theorysabers.com/products-3?category=Accessories&subcategory=Merch Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Come Follow Church History, host Lynne Hilton Wilson is joined by BYU professor and historian Janiece Johnson for a captivating deep dive into one of the most pivotal—and often misunderstood—moments in Latter-day Saint history: the 1844 succession crisis. In the immediate aftermath of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints faced an uncertain and deeply emotional crossroads. Without its founding prophet, who would lead the Saints? Lynne and Janiece unpack the confusion, tension, and spiritual searching that followed, exploring the claims of various contenders—including Sidney Rigdon, who argued for guardianship of the Church—as well as other voices who stepped forward during this turbulent period. Together they trace how fear, grief, and competing visions for the future created a moment of genuine crisis for the Saints. With expert insight, Janiece Johnson provides rich historical context, helping viewers understand the different claims to take leadership of the Church—and how the eventual path forward reshaped the trajectory of the Restoration. If you're interested in Latter-day Saint history, the legacy of Joseph Smith, or the development of Church leadership, this episode offers a thoughtful and faith-focused look at a defining moment in 1844. Tune in for a conversation filled with depth, clarity, and remarkable historical detail.
Read transcriptDust off your cowabunga collection and prepare your fists for some serious turtle-powered mayhem, because this week on Play Comics we're diving shell-first into TMNT: Mutant Melee, the 2005 arena-based fighting bonanza that took the 2003 animated series and asked the most important question: what if we just got all the turtles, their friends, AND their enemies into one room and let them beat the absolute snot out of each other? Developed by Konami for PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC, this isn't your typical one-on-one fighter—it's more like if Smash Bros and Power Stone had a shell-covered baby and that baby knew all of Splinter's teachings. Joining us for this body-slamming brawl is the incomparable Tommy Proffitt from Distant Echoes and Lee Carvallo's Podding Challenge, a podcast wizard who understands the intricate art of dissecting character-based chaos and canon coherence like few others can. Plus being able to bring his signature blend of gaming nostalgia and comedic precision to help us determine if this colorful chaos simulator managed to capture the spirit of its source material or if it swung its nunchucks at empty air. Together, we'll navigate the treacherous waters of Last Man Standing mode, contemplate why anyone thought having 22 playable characters was a good idea, and investigate whether the game's holiday-themed cosmetics (seriously—set the date to December 25th and watch the turtles rock Santa hats) are feature or bug. Learn such things as: What does it say about a game when its best feature might legitimately be the ability to unlock the original arcade game inside it? What's the difference between a party fighter and a fighting game that doesn't know what it wants to be? Can the 2003 cartoon's tone can survive being translated into “everyone fights everyone all the time? And so much more! Our guest this week is the remarkable Kemi Ashing-Giwa, whose new novel The King Must Die is out in November. We talk about science fantasy—or whether genre labels mean much at all to the new generation of writers—her own influences, her well-received first novel, the space opera The Splinter in the Sky, and even her current scientific work on mass extinctions and the loss of her family home in the California wildfires earlier this year. As always, our thanks to Kemi for making time to talk to us today, and we hope you enjoy the episode.

Halle and Alison would rather just get carjacked than find what's living in the woods while they ruin 2008's Splinter.

No more files. No more questions. He killed himself and that's that. This was quite the reversal from an administration stacked with figures — like FBI director Kash Patel and his deputy Dan Bongino — who built their celebrity in MAGA circles by ginning up the Epstein conspiracy and demanding his case files be released. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi had said the the Epstein client list was "sitting on her desk for review." Now the White House says no such list exists. And Trump wants everyone to stop talking about it.As all this unfolded, a number of listeners wanted the KYE take on the Epstein story—so here it is. We recount some of the most salient details of the case for the uninitiated, then offer our takes on what we think really is going on, and, perhaps more importantly, assess how this might affect Trump's second term: how serious the breach between Trump and the MAGA movement is, the possible consequences of administration officials spinning stories about Hillary's emails (still!) instead of doing their actual jobs, the ongoing attacks on the basic functions of the federal government, Trump's spectacular, open corruption, and, as we all pay attention to the crisis of the day, what sending tens of billions in new funding to ICE will mean for our country.Sources:Emily Davies, Perry Stein, Jeremy Roebuck and Kadia Goba, "Trump fumes as Epstein scandal dominates headlines, overshadows agenda," Washington Post, Jul 27, 2025.Khadeeja Safdar & Joe Palazzolo, "Jeffrey Epstein's Friends Sent Him Bawdy Letters for a 50th Birthday Album.
