I am excited to call today’s guest a friend, humanitarian, and an incredible advocate for the military community. Gary Sinise is an Actor, Director, Producer, and philanthropist. He is most famously known for his role as Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, but I know him through his charitable works for the veteran community, first responders and his big giving heart. Gary shares his story on why he is a Grateful American and his drive to serve and give back to those who have served our country.   Key Takeaways What drives Gary to serve our military members? Gary knew his way of giving back was to help support several different non-profits that focused on military and veteran services, which is how he met J.R. Gary found a community in theater, which he had never had up until that point. It was the first time he felt like he belonged. Service is a great healer. After 9/11, Gary was left feeling broken-hearted and searching for purpose. He found it in the military community. Gary discovered the play ‘Tracers’ because a group of Vietnam military veterans were putting on the show to share their story. When Steppenwolf theater picked it up, veterans were lining up at the door to watch it.  The Gary Sinise Foundation has been around for 9 years and they work on building smartly-adapted housing for veterans, first-responders, and gold-star families in addition to other programs. And now with Covid-19, they have a new program to help healthcare workers. Gary knows where his freedom comes from and it should not be taken for granted. J.R. has always admired how Gary used his platform to talk about what’s important to him. I've admired the acting skills of today's guest for years and I've been equally impressed (and entertained) with his musical abilities! But it is his devotion to our Veteran's, our First Responders, and their families that propelled my esteem for him into the upper stratosphere.  Gary Sinise is a man of talent, honor, and action. Join us as we talk about his new book, Grateful American, A Journey from Self to Service, and the work of The Gary Sinise Foundation, AND to hear of my own very personal (and profound) experiences with what Gary refers to as our "Freedom Providers."  The audio quality of our interview isn't the best, but the man and his message are FANTASTIC on this episode of LOVE SOMEONE. ~ Delilah Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A tin cup with holes in it that I brought back from the prison camp. I keep that cup just to remind me of the challenges I face and the value of the challenge. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be?My mother. She endured so much while I was over there, but never placed blame. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A medallion that I carried in combat. It says: [Joshua 1:9] “Be strong, courageous and remember that the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” It sealed my faith + gave me courage. I gave it to the love of my life when we got engaged. When she has to go into dark places, I wanted her to have the same medallion with her. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Abraham Lincoln. I’d ask: How in the world did you get through that time? And hold everything together with a nation that was literally pulling itself a part? I think he’d say “Find commonality – there are threads and values that run through all of us. Get back to those basics.” I think that is what he did and succeeded. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Never say you can’t do something, you have to believe in yourself and those who love you. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? It’s going to be dark. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, Republicans are buckling on President Trump's National emergencies Act declaration because they are ignorant. Do any of these so called constitutionalists claim that the Administrative State is unconstitutional when the massive federal government leviathan writes more regulations than Congress does? How many of them proposed a repeal of DACA? President Obama issued this executive action knowing that he couldn't legislate from the oval office, but he did it anyway. Not a single one of these constitutionally critical Congressmen said a word. Congress issues statutes allowing the president to move funds from one account to another. Trump is citing the actual statutes that Congress voted on, DACA was dictatorial—plain and simple. The question to them is: Is it constitutional for people to pour in at our border? Also, Michael Cohen, and his attorney Lanny Davis, admitted liar and confessed criminal will take the witness stand in congress Wednesday to spew lies to the fake news media; nothing he has to offer has any legislative consequence to our Congress, but their goal is to sabotage him. So the show must go on. Later, Democrats defend infanticide, yet again by voting against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Healthcare cannot be a right because we don't have the right to a doctor's services whenever we want. In September 1993 actor Gary Sinise, fresh off of the triumph of directing his film adaptation of Of Mice Men, was being fitted for a long-haired wig to shoot scenes as the disabled veteran Lt. Dan Taylor in the movie Forrest Gump. The film’s runaway success, both at the box office and the Academy Awards of course brought Sinise acclaim as a performer, but he found that when he visited veteran’s groups they naturally identified him with the inspiring figure of the wounded Marine officer.   Less than ten years later, in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks, Sinise cast around for a way to connect to and contribute to the sacrifices of US fighters on the front lines — and the journey into a thoroughgoing commitment to the work of supporting veterans and active duty service people is the through line of Sinise's brand new memoir Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service.  He sat down with us on the eve of publication to talk about the path from founding Chicago’s Legendary Steppenwolf Theater Company to his career in film and television — and his current work helming the many projects of the Gary Sinise Foundation.
