Organised crime groups likely still dictate New Zealand's drug market despite huge increases in seized product. Border drug busts jumped from 1.5 to 6.5 tonnes between 2018 and 2024. In the first nine weeks of 2026, more than 12 tonnes of cocaine was stopped in the Pacific. Chair of Ministerial Advisory Group for Organised Crime Steve Symon told Mike Hosking groups are stockpiling. He says they're getting enough drugs in so they can still control prices, even when there are disruptions. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After the resignations of three of the five members of a ministerial advisory group charged with tackling retail crime, justice officials issued a warning. In a report, obtained by Checkpoint, they told Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith the group's two remaining members didn't have relevant expertise in the security industry and facial recognition technology - areas the group is to issue advice about. But, the group is still working to produce reports about these matters. Reporter Jimmy Ellingham spoke to Lisa Owen.
Sadia Mir, member of our Public Engagement Advisory Group joins us on the latest episode of our podcast. The Group gives us feedback and ideas about how to make sure complainants get a high quality, empathetic and timely service from us. Sadia shares her experiences of being a member of the group, how the group improves the service of PHSO for the people that use it and why it's so important to be involved.
The government is scrapping a troubled advisory group led by businessman Sunny Kaushal. The Ministerial Advisory Group for victims of retail crime has been dogged by controversy since it was established by Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith in October 2024. Most recently, three of its five members resigned within a month of each other, with one saying it had become a very unpleasant environment under Kaushal. Reporter Jimmy Ellingham spoke to Lisa Owen.
Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith is pulling the pin on a group charged with tackling retail crime four months early. He spoke to Corin Dann.
The Retail Crime Group chair is brushing off criticism from former members. The Government's scrapping its retail crime Ministerial Advisory Group early after three members resigned, leaving just two members out of five. Retail NZ boss and former member Carolyn Young said her relationship with chair Sunny Kaushal made the role untenable and as a politician, he's focused on making headlines. But Kaushal told Mike Hosking he's not upset how things went down with Young because he's focused on the victims. He says he won't respond to her public comments because he wants to get the job done and not focus on egos. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Political tensions are flaring over the fate of the Government's retail crime advisory group. The Government's scrapping its Ministerial Advisory Group several months early after three members resigned last month, leaving just two. Labour's Ginny Anderson told Mike Hosking it's been a disaster since day one with zero outcomes, lead by the group chair Sunny Kaushal. She says he was a political appointment that backfired. But National's Mark Mitchell says they wanted to make sure New Zealand's small and medium businesses had a strong voice, which Kaushal has been. The Justice Minister says his retail crime advisory group has been successful and productive. It'll been cut short, ending in May - not the planned September - after three members resigned last month. It leaves just two members, chair and dairy owner Sunny Kaushal and liquor retailer, Ash Parmar. Paul Goldsmith says he could have appointed more people for the next six months or wrapped it up early. "The simpler thing to do was say - look, you've got a couple of things you need to finish, you've got three months to do that and then we'll go off on our merry way. The Government's got lots of ideas to work with." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's no evidence retail crime has fallen, despite claims the Government's Retail Crime Advisory Group delivered more change than ever before. The Justice Minister has confirmed the group will be disbanded early, months ahead of schedule, after several members resigned. Chair Sunny Kaushal says he doesn't think there is any other Ministerial advisory group that's delivered eight key reforms in two years. But Retail NZ CEO and former group member Carolyn Young told Ryan Bridge it's an election year, he's a politician and he wants votes. She says people must focus on what's headline news and what's actual news, to see what's been put in place and has actually made a difference. The Labour Party has savaged a government advisory group on retail crime, calling it "dysfunctional, directionless and failing". It comes after Checkpoint yesterday revealed that three of the five members on the Ministerial Advisory Group had resigned in recent weeks.
A controversial government advisory group on retail crime has fallen apart with three of the five members resigning months before the group is due to finish its work. The latest person to quit is Retail New Zealand Chief executive, Carolyn Young. Questions have been raised about the group's value for money after it was revealed that its chairperson, Sunny Kaushal was paid $230,000 in its first year; something he vigorously defends. Retail NZ's Carolyn Young spoke to Lisa Owen.
The Justice Minister's dismissing suggestions there's an issue within the Ministerial Advisory Group for victims of retail crime amid resignations. Three of the five members have resigned in recent weeks including Michael Bell, Lindsay Rowles, and Retail NZ Chief Executive Carolyn Young. Young says her relationship with its chairman Sunny Kaushal became untenable. Kaushal's refused an interview but says it's well known himself and Young have different views on the group's recommendations. Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith told Mike Hosking it's a total beat-up. He says the group's been very productive with two of the five promoted into higher jobs, with one member not happy. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A prediction we haven't seen the last of a transnational crime syndicate operating out of Auckland airport. Operation Matata's seen 43 arrests since February, including 20 border workers - allegedly involved with smuggling large quantities of meth and cocaine. It's thought the group were exploiting baggage handlers at the airport. Chair of the ministerial advisory group on organised crime Steve Symon told Heather du Plessis-Allan that authorities have done a fantastic job rooting out that many offenders. But he suspects either there are more, or if not, they'll be replaced like they were at the start of the year. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A panel of experts has a solution to tackling organised crime but won't yet say what it is. The Ministerial Advisory Group on Transnational, Serious and Organised Crime has put out a new list of recommendations ahead of its final report later this month. Among the suggestions are greater accountability across government departments and a new minister whose entire job is working on the problem. Group chair Steve Symon told Mike Hosking the overall solution is bold. He says they've had a lot of encouragement; the question is whether it will translate into financial support and the political will it needs. The Ministerial Advisory Group on Transnational, Serious and Organised Crime says bold action on data-sharing is needed to rein in the rapidly evolving threat of organised crime. The group's chair Steve Symon spoke to Corin Dann.
There are fears limited information sharing is hindering authorities efforts to tackle transnational crime. A report from a Ministerial Advisory Group focused on organised crime says there's sparse coordination between agencies, technological limitations, and people are fearful of sharing what could be useful information. It's recommending a new sharing framework and tweaks to the Privacy Act to make it easier. Chair Steve Symon told Mike Hosking change is needed. Transformations are hard, and too often, they fail to deliver on their promise. In this episode of The Product Experience, Lily and Randy speak with Jen Swanson, CEO of Tuckpoint Advisory Group, to unpack why transformation initiatives falter and what it truly takes to succeed.Key Takeaways— Transformation requires intentionality: Real transformation isn't accidental or surface-level; it must be deliberate, comprehensive, and backed by leadership.— Avoid ‘transformation theatre': Pretending to change—without restructuring ownership, processes, or collaboration—is worse than doing nothing at all.— Start with honest orientation: Knowing your starting point is essential before plotting a path forward.— Executive involvement is non-negotiable: Transformations can't be delegated. Leadership must model the change and communicate relentlessly.— Product-led is about mindset, not just teams: Everyone should operate within the product model, but not all need to be on product teams.— Pace matters: Organisations must assess their capacity for change and determine the right balance between ambition and sustainability.— Give grace for the learning curve: People need space to be bad at new things before they get good—psychological safety is essential.Chapters0:00 – Introduction & the myth of sneaky transformations1:01 – Jen's background and path into product2:53 – What transformation really means5:53 – Defining honest orientation8:00 – What is transformation theatre?12:09 – When real change feels fake13:04 – The importance of executive commitment16:04 – Why transformations fail19:11 – Common catalysts for transformation22:06 – Product-led vs product thinking25:00 – Who's in the opOur HostsLily Smith enjoys working as a consultant product manager with early-stage and growing startups and as a mentor to other product managers.
