This week we explore Frank Darabont's sophomore feature The Green Mile (1999). As a follow up to the classic and beloved The Shawshank Redemption (1994), The Green Mile is more bleak, longer, and certainly more gruesome. However, it was an immediate box office success, and has stood the test of time as a beloved classic. Enjoy our review of this death row classic.   Cinema Spectator is a movie podcast hosted by Isaac Ransom, Juzo Greenwood, and Cameron Tuttle. The show is executive produced by Darrin O'Neill and recorded & produced in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. You can support the show at patreon.com/ecfsproductions. It's October, which means it's time for scary books and scary movies. There's one person who is well known for both: Stephen King. Since his first novel, "Carrie," was published in 1974 and adapted into a hit film two years later, his novels and short stories have been a reliable source of material for film and TV adaptations. And while he's known as a master of horror, some of the more popular films based on his work are drawn from non-horror material. On this week's episode, Sean Fennessey, co-host of the Ringer podcast "The Big Picture," joins Gilbert Cruz to talk about "Stand By Me," "The Shawshank Redemption" and more.Books and movies discussed in this episode:"Stand by Me," based on the novella "The Body" from 1982's "Different Seasons""The Running Man," based on the 1982 novel of the same name published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman"The Shawshank Redemption," based on the novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" from "Different Seasons""Dolores Claiborne," based on the 1992 novel of the same name"The Green Mile," based on the 1996 serial novel of the same name"The Life of Chuck," based on the novella from 2020's "If It Bleeds""The Long Walk," based on the 1979 novel of the same name published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Hello everyone! Anders Holmes is here with another solo episode where he reviews Frank Darabont's The Mist, adapted from the short story written by Stephen King.As it is spooky season (October aka Scary Movie Month) and Halloween is on the way, Anders Holmes will be talking about some of his favourite horror films in these solo Anders Reviews episodes. Horrors film that are some of his favourites, films that have made a big impression on him and films that people should check out. Whether they be fans of the genre or not.In this episode, Anders reviews The Mist directed by Frank Darabont and based off the Stephen King short story featured in his book: Skeleton Crew. The Mist was released in 2007 and it capped off Frank Darabont's un-official Stephen King trilogy. He had previously written and directed two beloved pieces of cinema: The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Both adapted from Stephen King's short stories. Darabont is no stranger to the world of horror and had written A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 3: The Dream Warriors. His work with Stephen King started back when he was 20 years old when he adapted a short story of his. This was part of Stephen King's Dollar Deal programme, where aspiring filmmakers could adapt and buy the rights to one of his short stories for a dollar. This was discontinued a few years ago. The Mist stars Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden and Andre Braugher. A group of people are trapped in a supermarket when a strange mist engulfs the town after a big thunderstorm. Their troubles do not end there as Lovecraftian and cosmic monsters come out of the mist and attack them. In the world of social media, misinformation and also living in a Covid-19 world, The Mist is a perfect film for our fragile times. It wonderfully reflects the divisive world of today, just as it did back in 2007 when it reflected the post 9/11 atmosphere and the Bush Era in America. A frightening and intense social-political horror reminiscent of the work created by Night of the Living Dead filmmaker: George A Romero. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more solo episodes from Anders during this year's spooky season. Stay tuned for our upcoming Fascism on Film episode on The Marriage of Maria Braun. Also do listen to our Robert Redford Special.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work soon in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film will be released in select cinemas in the US on October 17th and in Finland on November 5th. This provocative comedy tackles the "magical Negro" trope coined by Spike Lee—where Black characters exist primarily to help white protagonists—by imagining it as a real organization designed to keep white people comfortable. The film blends social commentary with romantic comedy as the protagonist must choose between his assigned role and his own desires.Questions We Discussed:What is the "magical Negro" trope and how has it appeared in films like The Green Mile, The Legend of Bagger Vance, and Ghost?Does the film work better as satirical sketch comedy than as a feature-length movie?Should we have avoided discussing this film as non-Black hosts, or is there value in these conversations across racial lines?Does the romantic comedy element undermine or enhance the film's social commentary? How does the character of Lizzie complicate the film's racial dynamics as a multiracial woman who "passes" as white? Is the final confrontation scene between Aaron and Jason genuine growth or does it center white comfort once again? Can characters like Guinan from Star Trek: The Next Generation or Morpheus from The Matrix fit this trope while still being well-developed?Why did this film generate such polarized reactions, particularly within Black media critique circles?**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Stephen King has a habit of putting his strongest messages into his shortest of works.  Stand By Me (The Body), Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Life of Chuck is no exception.  First of all, read it.  No. Really.  READ IT.  Then go and watch the movie.  No no. Really. WATCH THE MOVIE. The Life of Chuck is the affirmation of life that we need in the world we live in today.  It doesn't assure us that all will be well, or even that everything will work out just the way we want or hope or think we deserve. No, but it does affirm to us all this. Each of us, every single one of us, are more than we suppose. Not just that, but additionally, who we are, what we experience, what we dream and hope and imagine, absolutely all of it, is important in some way and to some one. Our pairing on this episode is Ryes of the Robots by Filmland Spirits.  We felt it was appropriate. This is a fantastic rye whiskey, and we're looking forward to telling you all about it.   Stephen King | The Life of Chuck Ryes of the Robots Small Batch Straight Rye Whiskey

Greg Alba & John Humphrey dive into Severance Season 2, Episodes 7–10, the gripping Apple TV+ psychological thriller created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller (Escape at Dannemora, Tropic Thunder). Continuing the mind-bending story of Lumon Industries, these episodes push the “innie” and “outie” lives of the severed employees to their breaking points, blurring the lines between loyalty, rebellion, and self-discovery. Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation, Step Brothers) stars as Mark Scout, who faces deeper revelations about his late wife and the true nature of Lumon's sinister experiments. Britt Lower (Man Seeking Woman, Casual) delivers a standout performance as Helly R., whose rebellion against her family's legacy comes to a head. John Turturro (The Batman, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as Irving and Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter, Catch Me If You Can) as Burt bring tenderness and heartbreak as their relationship collides with the reality of Lumon's control. Zach Cherry (Crashing, You) adds both humor and pathos as Dylan, whose sacrifices prove critical to the unfolding conspiracy. Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects, The Green Mile) leads the sinister side of Lumon's upper echelon, intensifying the battle between the corporation and its employees. Across Episodes 7–10, audiences witness some of the series' most shocking and iconic moments: the escalating rebellion against Lumon, Helly's dangerous public confrontation, Mark's devastating family revelations, Irving's search for answers outside Lumon, and Dylan's tense standoff in the control room. These episodes cement Severance as one of Apple TV+'s most daring and conversation-driving shows, exploring themes of identity, free will, and the cost of corporate obedience. Movie of the Year: 1999The Green MileWhy The Green Mile Still Strikes a ChordOn this episode of the Movie of the Year podcast, the Taste Buds step into the hauntingly spiritual world of The Green Mile, Frank Darabont's sweeping 1999 adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Blending magical realism with deeply human storytelling, The Green Mile tackles justice, pain, and the inexplicable mysteries of life—and the panel is here to unpack it all.As they revisit this emotional powerhouse, the Taste Buds examine the film's artistry, cultural context, and why it continues to resonate with audiences decades later. Whether listeners are longtime fans or curious newcomers, this discussion sheds light on the film's enduring significance.Darabont and King: Adapting The Green MileFew director-author pairings have produced such emotionally resonant work as Frank Darabont and Stephen King. After the success of The Shawshank Redemption, Darabont returned to King's work with The Green Mile, crafting another prison-set epic—but this time with a supernatural twist. The Taste Buds explore how Darabont translates King's sprawling narrative into a cohesive film, balancing intimate performances with grand themes of morality, fate, and grace. The episode also compares both adaptations, highlighting what makes The Green Mile uniquely powerful.Related Links:Stephen King's Official SiteIMDb: The Green MileCoffey and Race: A Complicated Legacy in The Green MileJohn Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) is one of the most memorable characters in 1990s cinema, but also one of its most debated. This episode takes a close look at the racial dynamics of the film, unpacking the “magical Negro” trope and its implications. The panel wrestles with the emotional potency of Coffey's story, the film's approach to race and injustice, and how it reflects the myth-making tendencies of Hollywood storytelling, especially when viewed through a modern lens. The Power of Love in The Green MileAt its core, The Green Mile is a film about love. Not romantic love, but love expressed through compassion, understanding, and humanity. The Taste Buds reflect on the different relationships in the film—Paul Edgecomb's (Tom Hanks) empathy for Coffey, the bonds between the prison guards, and even Coffey's tenderness toward the mouse, Mr. Jingles. The discussion highlights how the film uses moments of grace to balance its darker themes and why The Green Mile remains a tearjerker that earns every emotional beat.Bonus Segment: Being John MalkovichAs a special treat for listeners, the episode includes a bonus segment where the Taste Buds dive into another 1999 classic: Being John Malkovich. They explore the film's surreal originality, its commentary on identity and celebrity, and how it stands as one of the boldest cinematic experiments of the year. It's a wild ride that perfectly complements the emotional gravity of The Green Mile.Guest Panelist Spotlight: Erik from Cradle 2 the GraveJoining the Taste Buds for this episode is special guest Erik, host of the Cradle 2 the Grave podcast. With his signature insight and deep love for ‘90s cinema, Erik brings fresh perspectives to the discussion, particularly on the cultural legacy of The Green Mile. His dynamic presence adds a new flavor to the panel as they dig deep into themes of justice, faith, and film craft.

On Sunday, Scottie Scheffler won the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. Looking at the final scoreboard, his five-stroke victory seemed like total domination. But I was there on the ground, and what I saw wasn't domination. It was something far more valuable for you as a sales professional and has everything to do with success. What I witnessed was a master class in mental resilience. And in this Sales Gravy podcast and article, I'm going to break down exactly how Scheffler's approach to adversity can transform your sales results. The Brutal Grind Quail Hollow is beautiful, but make no mistake—this course has teeth. It chewed up and spit out many of the world's best golfers without an ounce of remorse. Just ask Bryson DeChambeau, who on Saturday watched his lead evaporate on the "Green Mile" – the brutal final three holes of the course. Or ask Jon Rahm, who briefly held the lead on Sunday before plummeting to eighth place after getting absolutely bitten by those same closing holes. If you just looked at Scheffler's final score, you'd think he cruised through effortlessly. But that's not even close to what happened. It was a grind—every single hole, every single shot. Scheffler came into Sunday with a five-stroke cushion, but by the front nine, he had completely lost that lead. Let that sink in for a second. The world's best golfer, playing his best golf all season, watched his commanding lead completely vanish. For most players, that would have been it. Game over. The spiral begins. The tournament slips away. But not for Scottie Scheffler. Bounce Back Percentage - The Key to Winning There's one statistic from the tournament that explains everything – and it's a metric that should become your new obsession as a sales professional. It's called the "bounce-back percentage." The bounce-back percentage measures how often a player makes a birdie or better immediately following a bogey or worse. In other words, how often do you recover from failure and immediately create success? For the entire field at Quail Hollow, the average bounce-back percentage was 17.4%. For Scottie Scheffler? An astonishing 62.5%. Think about what this means. When the average player faced adversity, they bounced back less than one time in five. But Scheffler? He transformed failure into immediate success more than three out of every five times. That is massive mental resilience. It's the difference between holding a trophy and watching someone else hold it. It's the difference between being number one in the world and being just another talented pro. And it's absolutely the difference between sales mediocrity and sales excellence. Bounce-Back Matters in Sales So why am I talking about golf statistics on a sales podcast? Because the bounce-back percentage is the perfect analogy for what makes or breaks a sales career. I've got news for you—bad stuff is going to happen in your sales career. You're going to fail, lose, and face adversity. That's not a possibility—it's a guarantee. You're going to have situations where everything seemed perfect, and then the deal falls apart. Sometimes it's your fault. Sometimes it's not. Maybe the champion of your deal suddenly gets fired or leaves the company. Maybe a competitor swoops in at the last minute with a ridiculous offer. Maybe your prospect ghosts you after six months of work. Each day you're going to run into situations when you're prospecting where someone slams the phone in your ear, and then you've got to immediately turn around and make the next call. There will be days where nothing goes right and everyone says no. Your ability to bounce back doesn't just influence your success – it defines who you are as a sales professional. It is the key to winning. Full stop. The Goldfish Paradigm  When I'm hiring salespeople, one of the things I'm measuring for is optimism. It's essentially Ted Lasso's goldfish paradigm—the ability to forget fast. On the show,
