J.R. wants to start a band and asks his guest, Kechi Okwuchi, to join him. Kechi is a Singer, Motivational Speaker, Bullying Prevention Advocate, and a 2017 America's Got Talent finalist. In this episode, J.R. chats with Kechi on how she grew her passion for music and went on to audition for America's Got Talent. Kechi shares her recovery from a traumatic plane crash accident and her journey of reconciling her faith and uncovering what it really means to be a Christian. Kechi is also out with a new book, More Than My Scars, which takes a hard look at what truly defines you.   Key Takeaways Why did Kechi start singing? She always sang, but singing became her therapy/escape because it was the only thing that she could do that didn't hurt (after the accident).  What inspired Kechi to audition for America's Got Talent?  There were a lot of moments after the audition where she could say no but she was the one who decided in the end to keep pushing through to see what happens. Kechi was involved in a plane crash in Nigeria when she was 16 years old where, out of 109 people on the plane, there were only two survivors. She shares her experience.  Kechi and 60 of her school friends were on that flight, coming home for Christmas. She woke up from a coma five weeks later with third degree burns over 65% of her body. Kechi did not know she was only one out of two survivors until four months later. It was a huge burden to bear and she cried for days.  J.R. tries to put himself in her position. He was a burn survivor at 19 vs. her being 16. Despite just a three year age difference, there's a big mindset leap between those ages. What helped Kechi through her depression?   Kechi was born into a Christian household. She knew what it meant to be a Christian theoretically, but did not understand how He could take so many of her friends away. She and her mom talked a lot during this time. She was questioning her relationship with God, but her mom told her, “Kechi, the truth is being a Christian does not exempt you from experiencing bad things.” Kechi's mother wrote a book about the experience and shared some of her personal journals she had written at the time. Did Kechi learn something new after reading the book?  Reading through the book she realized that no one around her focused or even mentioned how she looked. They only encouraged her to get better, and that helped her focus on that. Music was very important to her recovery because it was something that didn't matter what physical capacity she had because she still could sing. That was something that the accident didn't take away from her.  Her physical therapist realized how much she loved to sing and suggested making music a part of her therapy.  That has been the best suggestion of her life. What was it like standing in front of Simon Cowell and singing on America's Got Talent?  Kechi shares how America's Got Talent gave her so many opportunities. It's not just about singing for it, but also being an ambassador for burn survivors and helping give them a voice. Remember, not all injuries are external. They can also be internal trauma people are going through that they are not necessarily showing to others. Kechi is passionate about fighting against bullying as well. She shares that when they first moved to America, her little sister was intensely bullied and it was painful to watch.  Kechi feels very blessed to work with so many inspiring organizations and people. There is so much to life after trauma.   Continue On Your Journey JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. Petal Modeste: Have Open Conversations with Your Children

Petal Modeste is an Associate Dean at Columbia Law School, overseeing Professional Advancement, Graduate Degree Programs and Executive Education. She is also the creator and host of the Parenting for the Future Podcast, which gives parents a new lens through which to understand the forces that shape our world as well as cutting-edge parenting tools to help them raise the next generation of powerful, purposeful people.   She serves on the boards of several nonprofits dedicated to positively impacting the lives of families and children. Petal shares her rebirth story, why it's important to have open conversations at the dinner table with your children, and the first time she realized she was a second-class citizen.   Key Takeaways A little bit about Petal and where she is from.  Studies show that teenagers that have at least 1-3 meals a week with their families, they're less likely to do drugs. By talking to members of your family, you can get a bigger picture of the world at large. Not everyone in your family thinks the same and it opens you up for more dialogue. Good conversations start at the dinner table. So many people don't actually know how to have a conversation. With so much social unrest happening, people are confused about how to even start the conversation if they're not sure how to even address it themselves. Parents are way more powerful than they recognize. Our children are living in a completely different world than what we've experienced as children. It's almost hard to relate. It's important to teach your children that it's easy to communicate with you, even if it's not always pleasant. We really have to be thoughtful and mindful of WHO our children are hanging out with. What do they believe? Are they a positive or toxic influence on your family? JR has put himself in an interesting position with his daughter. They're so close and have a great friendship that she sometimes forgets that he's her parent. Why did Petal go to law school? Petal never let other people define her. She is her own woman. Look out world! Petal left corporate America so that she could be a more present mother. Why did Petal start her podcast, Parenting for the Future? JR noticed that he has a difficult time apologizing because that's something that was not modeled in his household. What is something that Petal has discovered since having her podcast? We have a lot to teach our children, but we also have to actively engage in who they are. Really get to know their personality. They're not a direct reflection of you.   Continue On Your Journey   Petalmodeste.com Parenting for the Future Acalltomen.org Petal on Instagram Petal on Facebook   JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. Happy Father's Day! Today we have two special guests, Dan Vargas, who was featured in a previous podcast episode. He served 20 years in the United States Air Force and now works in a nonprofit capacity to help veterans. And J.R. has his very own 9-year old daughter, Lauryn Anabelle on the show! Dan has been a big mentor and father figure to J.R. and Dan talks about why it's important to be vulnerable and apologize to your children. Lauryn shares why she loves hanging out with dad and also talks about some of the dislikes about dad in a very honest and open conversation.   Key Takeaways Dan's father wasn't really around much. The person he looked up to the most was his art teacher. Dan grew up in a pretty dysfunctional family. It was riddled with affairs, sexual abuse, and suicide. Dan didn't want his children to go through the same thing he went through. Your children shouldn't have to sacrifice for you. Why did Dan originally join the military? It was to get away from home. When Dan met J.R., he knew he was hurting. Dan forgives his parents. They had some crazy upbringings. J.R. works on being vulnerable with his daughter. Dan talks about how that has been fundamental to his relationship with his 22-year-old daughter. As a parent, it's your job to protect your child, but it can be hard to shake that when they start standing on their own two feet. Kids really need structure and discipline. Children need security. How does Dan connect with his adult daughter now? Dan is best friends with his daughter. He knows he raised her to be tough, but in a good way. To J.R., Dan is a father figure to him. He was the first person to show J.R. what true vulnerability looks like, especially with another man, and not have it be awkward. J.R. was repeating some unhealthy patterns onto his daughter. The first person he called to help him break the cycle was Dan. Next up is little Lauryn Anabelle on the podcast! Belle sometimes feels like dad doesn't listen or he's not in the present. What can J.R. do better to fix this? Belle loves how dad is fun to be around. She sees some of her friend's parents being too strict. Belle got J.R. on TikTok, too! What are some of the positives and negatives that Belle likes about dad? Belle talks about how they recently went out and ordered some remote control cars to play with. Belle asks herself a lot of questions and does quite a bit of self-reflection on why certain things make her mad when she's alone. What was the maddest Belle has ever been mad at her dad? Belle created a runaway bag. She might be moving to Canada if her parents make her too mad. J.R. thanks Belle for picking him to be her dad.   Continue On Your Journey JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. Youtube Channel   Did you enjoy today's episode? ia Stokes is a dancer that got her fame on TikTok for doing dances in her hospital room while she was battling leukemia. After a year-long journey, Tia is now finally in remission. So much good has come from documenting her cancer experience in the hospital, and she really encourages everyone listening in on today's show to keep pushing through your hardships, no matter what.   Key Takeaways JR downloaded TikTok in the summer of 2020. Yep! And then, JR saw Tia on the platform. Her dancing while battling with Leukemia really inspired him. People will never remember the way you look, but they will always remember how you made them feel. No matter what you're going through, life is about bringing joy and happiness to others. Tia got diagnosed with cancer slightly over a year ago and she was determined to document her journey. Tia is a performer and dancer at heart. People are inherently good. This experience has shown Tia that there are SO MANY good people out there. Tia's cancer battle was one of the hardest things she had to go through. Tia made a simple goal: Just to dance 15 mins a day. Tia talks about her husband and how supportive he's been throughout her journey. There's nothing wrong with being vulnerable and crying! Remember, there is so much to be grateful for, but it's not always easy to see it when you're going through adversity. Crying is a very healing thing to do for you and your body. You have to practice positivity daily. Tia lost so much of her identity and now she has scars from the cancer. However, she remembers it's important to embrace these reminders.  Tia talks about her children and how they have been affected by this cancer and morality scare. Today, he is an avid Yoga Teacher, Hare Krishna community member, and an advocate of the raw food lifestyle and diet. However, his story doesn’t end there. Raghunath made a trip to India where he spent over six years as a monk, living and breathing a new philosophy and spirituality. He shares his journey and his story in this week’s episode!   Key Takeaways Raghunath grew up in the heavy (and drugged-out) punk rock scene of New York City in the 80s.   Raghunath decided to make a bold statement and be in a clean punk rock band. No drugs! No Alcohol! And plant-based living!  Raghunath really wanted to go down a path of self-discipline and self-improvement.  The ego is really the enemy. It sucks a lot of joy out of your life. Raghunath shares why he decided to completely walk away from his band and the punk rock scene.  Every single day has the chance to be a rebirth! It starts with just a small decision.  All living beings are struggling.  Why did Raghunath decide to leave New York and travel to India?  Travelling in the 80s was a whole different beast! If you got robbed or lost your passport, people just thought you went missing. Raghunath once stayed in a place that had one landline in the whole village.  How did Raghunath get his name?  What was Raghunath’s life like as a monk?  It’s important that you accept what makes sense to you. Don’t blindly say yes if you don’t understand it.  You develop strong ties to your beliefs by living it, breathing it, and understanding the ‘why’ behind it.  Raghunath applies what he’s learned in India into his own yoga studio. What’s the reception been like when people come in and experience something completely different?  Raghunath loves taking groups on spiritual journeys to experience first-hand what he believes in and teaches.    Continue On Your Journey Raghunath.yoga Raghunath on Wikipedia Raghunath on Instagram   JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. Ingrid has achieved a lot, but growing up she had a lot of adversity to overcome. She has definitely experienced a rebirth and shares her unique story of being considered one of the ‘stupid kids’ to someone who has broken through ceilings and elevated women’s voices.   Key Takeaways How did Ingrid and J.R. meet? We always want to ask the question: How do we take some of the traumatic experiences we’ve experienced in our life and use it for good, and help more people? Back then, Ingrid was called ‘retarded’ by her teacher and she was kicked out of school for her learning disability.  Ingrid needed a special bus to go to school, and because she was the only one, she ended up becoming best friends with the bus driver as a child. He was like her second father. However, she got bullied by the other kids every day for being dumb. The four most powerful words a father can say to his daughter is, “I believe in you.” Let’s not prejudge. Come into the world with love. Ingrid talks about her experience at Dell and the impact that she made there. We actually tend to overcomplicate things. Either because of lack of confidence or because we want to self-sabotage ourselves. As we are coming out on the other side of the pandemic, it’s very apparent that things will not work the same way they did back in 2018 and beyond. We are in a different world. The fastest engine to getting our economy on track is through women! Ingrid has the numbers to back it up. How did Dell’s program become so accessible to women entrepreneurs? Women want to be mentored by other women, but the challenge is there are so few of us who’ve walked the walk. Ingrid has some big goals to empower a billion women for 2030. How can you support her on this mission?   Continue On Your Journey Ingridvanderveldt.com Ebw2020.com Ingrid on Twitter Ingrid on LinkedIn   JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. Antwone learned in the Navy that he can teach himself anything. Antwone received a check for $250k, but being dyslexic, he originally thought it was 2,500 dollars. What was it like growing up in foster care? What does Antwone think about the foster care system in the United States? Who is Antwone’s favorite social worker and mentor? Here’s what it matters to care about another individual, no matter how small the act might seem. JR shares why it’s important that men cry it out sometimes. It’s not a weakness. What was it like watching the Antwone Fisher film for the very first time? Antwone had doubts about talking about his story, in both his book and in the film, but when people had such a positive reaction to it, he realized the impact he had made on other people’s lives. Antwone shares a little bit about his wife and how he knew right away that she was the one for him. Why did Antwone want to look for his father?   Antwone’s discovery allowed him to find and meet an entire extended family he did not know existed.   Little did Antwone know. A lot of his extended family lived right around the corner from where he grew up in foster care and where he was getting abused by his foster family. It was surreal. Antwone met his mother and didn’t think much of it… until he got on a plane to go back home. People who have been through a lot don’t feel the need to sugarcoat things. Antwone’s mother told him she did not want him and that’s why she did not go back for him when he was in foster care. So many families don’t have a clear line of leadership. She also shares the beautiful relationship she shares with her wife, and how they first found out that they both loved each other.   Key Takeaways How did Gina get her start in the music industry? Gina is currently undergoing her biggest rebirth journey to date. Have you ever thought, “If I could just get out of my own way.”? Gina doesn’t have a regular ‘creative song writing’ practice. “It’s not feminine to be loud and take up space.” That’s what our society teaches us. These rules are universal no matter what culture you’re from. What was it like to be nominated for a Latin Grammy? Gina shares what it was like leaving the US for the very first time to study abroad. Both Gina and JR talk about the insecurities they’ve felt when speaking Spanish. Gina shares how she found her voice. Music saves so many people’s lives. Caleb's keynotes and strategies help cultivate safe inclusive environments while helping maximize the employee experience through systems designed to help foster a deeper sense of connection to themselves, the people around them and the greater organizational mission. Caleb is also a West Point graduate, former Army Officer and NFL Draft Pick, and shares his struggles as a man who had zero emotional tools to handle the immense pressure he was faced with as a young adult in this week’s episode.   Key Takeaways Everything comes down to timing. JR shares how he randomly bumped into Caleb. How did Caleb get started in football? Parents want to be encouraging and supportive, but then at the same time, it can turn their children off completely or they can unknowingly have them develop a complex. Caleb talks about Christianity and God, and how he had to deconstruct his religion before building it back up again. How do we posture our hearts for more humility? Despite being loved in football, Caleb was miserable and always bullied. Why did Caleb join the military? Caleb had a deep longing within his heart to make a bigger impact. Caleb suppressed all of his pain and emotions, and when he couldn’t handle it anymore, he had a really bad rage problem. Caleb was getting pulled in two directions. His West Point superiors were telling him one thing, but society was telling him another. Caleb experienced his first panic attack when he became ‘famous’. When Caleb found out he was not allowed to go to the NFL while he was still at West Point, he was relieved. It meant he didn’t have to show people he didn’t have what it takes. Caleb reads out loud a negative ‘fan’ letter he received. Caleb had no tools in his emotional toolbelt to handle or deal with someone deeply calling him a coward like that. Instead of working through his fears, Caleb developed self-hatred. Caleb was actively trying to kill himself. There is no healing without vulnerability, and there is no vulnerability without community. How did Caleb repair his relationship with his mother? They used to get into tough yelling matches because they didn’t see eye to eye. Anna Marie Johnson Teague and Ted Bunch are the co-authors of The Book of Dares, a new book that discusses the male experience and how to overcome stereotypes and build healthy masculinity in our young boys. This isn’t just a book for men either! Everyone of all genders can benefit from this book to better understand a man’s upbringing and why some men feel compelled to act aggressively and violently against women. It’s time men can reimagine what it looks like to be and live their full authentic self without shame.   Key Takeaways A little bit about Anna Marie! A little bit about Ted! Why do men abuse women? Anna Marie and Ted’s book is for young male children. This book is designed to create healthy masculinity for our young boys. This is not just a book for boys, women can read this book too to better understand the male experience. JR shares his experience of finally being able to cry ‘safely’ at the age of 24 years old. Vulnerability is a place of strength. Our society sees it as a weakness. Boys are mimicking what they see in their male role models. Our culture has taught boys and men that you can’t be open with your feelings. It’s painful because a whole gender suffers. How can parents encourage their children to be more vulnerable? Anna Marie noticed that at night when the world is getting quiet is when her child wants to share. It’s tough because she’s so darn tired at the end of the day. Acknowledgement is such an empowering thing. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge when someone has something vulnerable. Men have a hard time asking for help. JR shares a story of when a man, a stranger, apologized to him. JR has a hard time apologizing, despite knowing it’s a good thing to do. He was taught not to apologize at a young age and it’s difficult to break that cycle. We teach our boys to sexually objectify women because, if you don’t, then you might be seen as ‘gay’. Censorship is not an option for your children. You have to help provide them with the right tools for what the world will throw at them. Sexualization is part of our culture. We need to educate our children and show them how to be media literate. Compassion for different people, for different races, has been heightened. It’s hard to build connection and empathy. What is privilege? What is white privilege? And how do you communicate that to your children?   Continue On Your Journey Acalltomen.org Anna Marie on Instagram Ted on Instagram The Book of Dares by Anna Marie Johnson Teague and Ted Bunch   JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. By the age of 22, Charles Clark was a 3 time National Champion, 10 times All American, and placed as the 6th fastest man in the world at IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany. He was living his dream and was one year away from inking his first shoe deal as a track and field superstar. On the outside, he was thriving, but his inner champion was barely pounding the surface. He could not find the joy, the gratefulness, within the work he was doing because he felt like he was not good enough. Charles shares his journey from being ungrateful to blessed for every opportunity that has come his way; good or bad.   Key Takeaways Charles was the 6th fastest man in the world.  You can have a God-given talent, but nothing comes naturally. You have to work hard to sustain it, develop it, and refine it.  Charles sustained a hamstring injury that could have prevented him from competing. This is how he decided to overcome it.  Charles was doing everything right, but he still couldn’t be grateful for what he had. This time, Charles found himself with another injury, and it was so bad that it ended his career. He was depressed, but he realized he had to change his mindset. How does Charles define purpose? When you put other people first and put yourself second, you can still win! By doing a speech at 24 years old, telling people his story, a girl came up to him and told Charles he saved her life. When did Charles realize that he should retire from track and field? The measure of your character is the true measure of your success. Charles wants people to overcome adversity. Adversity is a horrible thing to waste. Hardship might set you back but it's the very thing that will catapult you forward. It’s all about the process. If you don't go through the hard times, you can’t get built by it. Before Charles signed up for track and field, how did he discover he had this special talent? Tyler Campbell was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2007 but would continue to pursue football for two more years before the neurologist permanently sidelined Tyler’s dreams to play in the NFL. His journey into football was not easy, having lost multiple scholarships due to underage drinking, Tyler knew he had an uphill battle to take if he really wanted to make it into football. Today, Tyler shares a bit of his story, his dreams, and his adversities, and the life he’s created after football.    Key Takeaways Tyler wanted to tell his story when he was dancing with the stars and watched JR’s ‘game film’ to get ready. Who is Tyler and what was it like growing up with a famous football player, Earl Campbell? Tyler shares a little bit about his family history and how they come from a long line of people doing impactful and meaningful things. Tyler grew up not knowing the football side of his dad. His dad kept all of his trophies out of the house. Tyler’s first love was in basketball and then he converted over to football. However, he wasn’t as good as his brother or his dad. This had a lot of psychological impacts on Tyler. He felt like he had let his family down. That was just his own internal monologue. One thing Tyler overlooked was he and his father put in the work early on. They showed up consistently. When he recognized that, things started to shift for him. If you want it bad enough, you will get there. Just keep hanging on. Tyler got in trouble for underage drinking and it severely hurt his chances to become a pro athlete. This is something Tyler had to own up to. He lost every single scholarship. If I’m going to bet on anybody… Tyler was going to bet on himself. After so much struggle and determination, Tyler was living his dream...until he got injured. This was the first time he had depression. Football defined Tyler. The words that his father told him, that Campbells don’t quit, Tyler used his adversity as fuel. Tyler decided he was going to put more things on his plate that would define him as a person, and not as a ‘football athlete’. This was life-changing. Mentoring others, working on himself, he saw a completely new world. Finally, Tyler got into his dream school!!! We all hurt differently. Tyler learned in his injury recovery that he had to put his ego aside and show up as a leader and mentor to his teammates. Be a teammate, you don’t know what somebody else is going through. Tyler talks about the day he found out he couldn’t walk. That’s when he discovered he had MS. By this point in Tyler’s life, adversity was just the name of the game. It was nothing he couldn’t handle. Tyler had to take all of his finals left-handed. Tyler had another MS relapse. And that was it, his potential NFL career had officially ended. Tyler found his way through communication and started to become a speaker. When he got up on stage to talk at an MS conference, it changed Tyler’s life. You can change the world with your words. Tyler opens up about his erectile dysfunction and the stigma black men have talking about their emotions. Do not minimize your pain. If it’s painful, you got to get it out. He shares a little bit about what he learned as a young 19-year-old man being exposed to the world, the war, and more for the very first time. It’s a culture shock, and no one can really — truly — prepare you for the effects war has on your mind and soul. The day J.R got injured was the day he was reborn.   Here is his rebirth story.   Key Takeaways Despite experiencing severe burns across his body, J.R’s wrist is not burned. J.R decided to tattoo the exact time he got injured when he was in Iraq on his wrist. Why did J.R decide to join the military? J.R’s mother did not want him to join the military, but he was stubborn. J.R’s superiors were trying to warn him that he would deploy soon, but J.R wasn’t processing it. When J.R saw Iraq for the first time, his mind was blown. How do people survive out here? What were some of J.R’s roles and responsibilities when he was in Iraq? Sleeping is optional. J.R doesn’t even remember what bases he stayed at because they moved around so much — they also rename them. J.R details his experience when his convoy got attacked by insurgents. J.R was 3 years old when he heard his mother cry for the first time. It was heartbreaking. The doctors got real with J.R and his burn limitations. Recovering from the burns was a whole process. It was painful and tedious to get through. J.R was questioning what his purpose in life was now that he could not go back to Iraq. J.R couldn’t even close his eyes because the burns were so bad! Despite all the hardship J.R has gone through, he’s found his purpose in life again. People were putting J.R in a box because he was a veteran. Gabby shares how volleyball saved her, what it was like growing up on an island with nothing to do, and the lessons she’s learned as a parent.    Key Takeaways Gabby shares a bit about her story and what it was like growing up in the Virgin Islands.  There was nothing for Gabby to do growing up on the island. It was a small town built on tourism. She was going nowhere really fast. Why is religion and spirituality so important for Gabby?  How did Gabby get into volleyball? It was a very rough start for her at first.  People can be good at something, but that doesn’t make you a champion.  Where does Gabby’s humility and gratefulness come from? Is that an island mentality?  We are built to be in nature. When we grow up in an urban environment, we substitute our natural instincts with materialism. We have to hunt for more stuff/stimulus to fill a space within us.  Gabby’s daughter lives in a bubble, but to be fair, she put her in that bubble.  Gabby doesn’t have the parenting thing quite figured out yet, but she knows it’s important to lead by example and to really listen to them even if you think their issues might be trivial.  JR wants his daughter to grow up strong, but she can be a sensitive kid at times and he worries that the world won’t wait for her to be ready.  Volleyball saved Gabby. She got the best mentors out of playing that support. It helped her develop self-care and discipline.  Athletes put a lot of their identity on their accomplishments, but when their career is over, they don’t take the time to evolve themselves beyond that.  So much of life is a formula. If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and just do what you need to do, you’ll get there.  Gabby talks about XPT and why most of us are breathing wrong.  Gabby shares her diet and what her family prefers to eat.  What advice would Gabby like to give her younger self?    Continue On Your Journey Gabriellereece.com Gabby on Instagram Xptlife.com Lairdsuperfood.com Code: Gabby20 for a discount!    JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. She is currently starring on UMC’s new six part psychological thriller, Terror Lake Drive. Shannon and I became fast friends when we played opposite each other as love interests on the daytime drama All My Children over 10 years ago. Extremely passionate about self-care, Shannon recently started a new crystal infused plant-based skincare line called Anointed Co, where she and her sister create 100% organic, vegan & additive free natural products. Shannon is full of positive energy and light, living her truth unapologetically every day. I can’t wait for you to learn more about her unique journey in today’s episode!   Key Takeaways J.R. and Shannon reminisce about working together on All My Children. Shannon was raised by two beautiful women, which was controversial at the time, living in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Shannon grew up as an only child and interacted a lot with adults as a kid which forced her to grow up quickly. How did Shannon become an actress?  Shannon believes in something bigger than herself. “If you believe in the negative opinion of others, then that’s all you will think you’re capable of” Shannon struggled growing up as a mixed race child. She was too white for the black kids and too black for the white kids. She didn’t feel like she fit in.  When J.R. worked with Shannon, he was a bit intimidated at first, but she was always humble and kind to him. David Shurna and Tom Lillig co-authored the book, What’s Within You: Your Roadmap to Living Life with No Barriers and they both co-founded, No Barriers USA. David is also the Executive Director and Tom is the Director of Account Management and the Board President. Their start goes back 17 years ago when the two of them decided it was time to create an organization that had a profound impact on the lives of others and the ability to shift one’s life path forever. There are no barriers to what you want to achieve. Find out more about David & Tom in this week’s episode!   Key Takeaways Why did David & Tom write a book? “It’s part of being human to struggle. We all have experienced it.” What inspired David & Tom to start no barriers 17 years ago? J.R. is featured in this book! “What’s in you is stronger, way stronger, than what’s in your way” J.R. remembers meeting with a blind boy who had such a unique outlook on life and how he believed his blindness was the best thing to happen to him! Everything in life starts with a vision, but what do David & Tom mean by this? “In times of great darkness, the vision you have is what will fuel you through.” Just being able to open up and share the struggles you’re going through, and finding out others feel the same, really helps build connection and community in profound ways. Give someone a powerful moment that they can point back to and an ability to recognize that’s what changed them as a leader. “You have to know your why. Your core why”. How can you make people feel like they matter? Not everyone is going to elevate the world and start a great non-profit, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be incredibly passionate about the world we’re building and the roles we’re in. What makes effective teams?  The ability to be vulnerable is a key to having people feel safe and like they matter. Who has helped you become the person you are today? For me, it’s been Daniel E. Vargas. He served 20 years in the United States Air Force and served in Desert Storm. After retiring from the military, he transitioned into the nonprofit world and has dedicated himself to helping veterans. He found me two years after my injury and the rest is history. He was the first person in my life that made it okay for me to cry in front of someone else and be able to express to another man that I loved them. He has been the father figure, brother, role model and mentor I never had growing up. Dan has played a major role in many of the blessings I have today. I am honored to introduce you to my best friend.   Key Takeaways It all started back in 2007 when J.R. first met Dan.  Dan could see J.R. didn’t trust a lot of people and he always had his guard up. He encouraged J.R. to go to therapy and he has been part of J.R.’s life every step of the way. What’s Dan’s story and how did he get to where he is today? There was a time Dan wanted to end his life, but he knew that wasn’t the answer to his problems. He knew he needed help. Dan grew up in poverty and he and his siblings had to fend for themselves. Why did Dan join the AirForce? Dan ended up adopting his wife’s brother and her nephew. “Everyone deserves love, everyone just needs a chance” How did Dan make the transition from military life to civilian life? Dan had self-esteem issues growing up as a kid. He always thought he did not matter. The childhood stuff that Dan tried to avoid, all came to light when he had his own child. J.R. uses Dan as an example of the kind of father he aspires to be for his children. “No matter how old you are, change is always scary” Dan compares people who live with regret vs. those that take inventory on what they’ve done and how they’ve lived. “You can redefine what family looks like to you. It doesn’t have to be defined by blood relations” If Dan could go back and give a piece of advice to his younger self, what would it be? What is Dan most proud of?   Continue On Your Journey JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. Youtube Channel   Did you enjoy today’s episode? Within five years, Ryan had lost her brother and her mom. When Ryan took on the role of President at the foundation, she woke up everyday feeling like she could not make mistakes and screw this up. Ryan’s therapist said she was suffering from PTSD. Ryan was frustrated. Isn’t that only for military veterans? Ryan recognizes now that she should have been in therapy a lot sooner than she was. They welcomed everyone back and treated the military as if they were heroes, but Charlie didn’t feel like a hero.  J.R. has physical wounds from war and people elevate him for it, but what about all the people out there with invisible wounds? With PTSD? They need a voice, too.  When Charlie came home, he wanted to change his name and disappear to forget his experience as a POW.  Charlie found out through sharing his story that he was giving people hope. This sparked a new purpose for him.  Why did Charlie join the military?  Charlie shares his story of how he got captured in Vietnam.  Charlie went through 6 different prison camps and at times shared his 8x8 cell with 3 other people.  Charlie finds it quite funny that people were afraid of running out of toilet paper during Covid-19. For the longest time, Charlie was mad at everyone. The president, the aircraft mechanics, everyone… until he read this note by Mark Twain. That’s when he found forgiveness.  When you point your fingers at someone else, you give up your own control.  Charlie felt incredibly guilty for being captured, for not being strong enough under torture.  Guys are afraid to reach out for help. Charlie believes this is why the suicide rates are so high. “Acid does more harm in the vessel it’s stored, than on the subject it's poured”. The hate you hold inside does more harm to you than it does to the enemy.  You’re the only one who has control over your life. The secret to success is the choices you make about the environment around you.  Charlie survived because he chose not to be bitter.  What got Charlie through the six years of being a POW?  “Return with Honor” was the mantra Charlie held in his heart. When a friend is going through a hard time, it can be difficult to come up with the words to comfort them. Sometimes, there are no words, but just being there for someone is enough. Leadership is critical in times of uncertainty, stress, and torture. The leadership in Charlie’s team kept everyone together and focused on the bigger mission.  Of everyone who came back from the Vietnam war, 36% of them had PTSD. Those who came back as POWs, only 4% had PTSD. Why is that?  Charlie and his unit were ready to cause an international incident for not leaving the prison camps when instructed to. Despite 6 years there, it was an easy decision to make. It was about principles.  When Charlie came back, he found out that his wife was divorcing him. Despite the lessons he learned in the prison camp, he didn’t learn them well enough when he was in the ‘real world’. He was ready to blame people all over again.  Everything happens for a reason. Despite having to shoplift for food and being a dropout, Arthur’s voice and all the positive things he told her stayed present in her head. She didn’t give up on herself. She went back to school despite being homeless. She finished 4 years of high school in 2 years. Does my past have to determine my future? Can I start over?  “When you’re embraced by a community, people hear you and hold you accountable for your actions.” You get to be held to a standard and you finally feel accepted. Liz was shocked when she got into Harvard. While homeless, she was featured in the NYTimes. People think, ‘why bother?’ and they shut down. “Cynicism is the atrophy of your heart.”  Liz realizes that she will spend the rest of her life healing from her trauma.  “Grief is love with no place to go.”  Liz shares the story of her first speaking engagement. She was bewildered by their specific request. It can be so easy to give up when faced with immense adversity. Why is our world set up to dehumanize ourselves?   When something feels wrong, Liz recognizes that she can’t be the only person who has felt this way. She seeks out knowledge to learn more.  “The way you really heal is you have to face what happened. The only way out is through. It’s never going to go away if we don’t tell the truth.” Liz talks about racism and the historic oppression Black Americans have faced throughout U.S. history.  This is not a theory we’re dealing with. We’re dealing with human lives.  How can you make the world a better place? “It first starts where you stand and fix what you can control” What are you silently agreeing on? If you want change, you have to be willing to give up what we have, to have the world that we want.    Continue On Your Journey Thearthurproject.org Liz on Facebook Liz on Twitter Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard by Liz Murray Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Tony Porter is an author, educator and activist working to advance social justice issues. As the co-founder and CEO of A CALL TO MEN, Tony is internationally recognized for his efforts to prevent violence against women while promoting a healthy, respectful manhood. Tony’s 2010 TED Talk has been named by GQ Magazine as one of the “Top 10 TED Talks Every Man Should See.” In this powerful episode, Tony shares how to undo racism, sexism, and male supremacy.    Key Takeaways Why is Tony so passionate about domestic violence and prevention work?  You can’t undo racism without addressing sexism and male supremacy.  The transformation we’re looking for happens through vulnerability, through sharing your story.  Boys are taught early on to have a ‘lack of interest’ in girls.  Why does it seem white America has a lack of interest in the struggles of black and brown people? The same applies to heterosexual folks and their lack of interest with gay and trans rights.  More men are open to talking about healthy manhood, but shut down when it comes to women's issues.  There is a minority of men who actually commit acts of violence towards women, but a majority of men will be quiet about it or choose to remain ignorant of it.  The life expectancy of a black transgendered woman is about 33 years old. People in the LGBTQ communities are seeking acceptance. They’re trying to remove the stigmas and labels that are placed on them.   We are so much more alike than we are different.  All black Americans are grieving right now due to the tragedies that have happened in the U.S. they are connected even if they don’t personally know one another. As people march the streets in protest, we are experiencing a historical moment.  How do you inspire young black men and women to keep going forward? How do you inspire allies to keep fighting?  Change is coming! People are fighting for change!  Tony lives in North Carolina and was traumatized by seeing how many confederate flags were flying around during the NASCAR races. However, now NASCAR doesn’t support this and they are standing up against this.  If women could end domestic violence on their own, they would have already. They need male allies speaking up for change. It’s important to meet people where they’re at. You can’t expect them to be at a certain level without helping them through the basics first.  It comes down to breaking unhealthy cycles, cycles you might not even be conscious of. Tony offers some words of wisdom for those that are struggling, angry and afraid for their black sons and daughters.    Continue On Your Journey Acalltomen.org Breaking Out of The Man Box by Tony Porter A Call to Men - TED Talk Tony on Twitter   JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. Bonus - Listen to Understand: An Uncomfortable but Necessary Conversation on Racism, Police Reform, and the Black Lives Matter Movement

This conversation might be uncomfortable for some, but I encourage you to sit in this with me. Be uncomfortable with me. Breathe through this. This country is undergoing a very important dialogue and we can’t turn a blind eye to it. This isn’t a podcast about police bashing either, I can respect law enforcement but also acknowledge deep change is needed. This country has experienced years and years of racism and systemic oppression and we can no longer be silent to it.   Key Takeaways In Yin Yoga, you have to sit in uncomfortable poses for 3-10 minutes at time. Your focus is to connect with your breath. This conversation might be uncomfortable for some. Breathe through it. Just Listen.  Let’s talk about police reform and racism in America. As a southern boy with Latino roots, JR has been victim and witness to racism and prejudice. “You should go back to your country!” Isn’t that funny? J.R. was born in this country and fought and almost died for this country.  When people yell “All lives matter!” You’re missing the point.  In the military, you’re trained on how to use your weapon AND how to use your hands. The police department lacks this type of training.  It’s on leadership to correct bad behavior and set the example of what is acceptable.  If you want dialogue, if you want trust, then there has to be accountability.  It is your right to peacefully protest. That’s what J.R. served for.  Everybody, no matter your ethnicity, should have the conversation with their children about race and racism.  How can you educate your children about race? We have to set the standard and show others what is and is not acceptable.   “Acid does more harm in the vessel it’s stored than on the subject it’s poured”.  Remember, it’s about liberty and justice for all men and women. We were created equal and we should be treated as such.    Continue On Your Journey ACLU American Civil Liberties Union NAACP Be The Bridge Become The Bridge | A Conversation With Pastor Steven Furtick & Pastor John Gray Confident Parents Confident Kids Equal Justice Initiative   JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R.
