Intro by: Gail NoblesPhoto credit: Lovelystatue901 - Own workUsage: Wikipedia CC BY-SA 4.0Hello, I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to a show about the gospel greats. Today's topic is Rev. James Cleveland.Rev. James Cleveland believed that gospel music should be low keyed. He didn't believe in rock gospel. James Cleveland believed gospel music expressed love for Christ and that it was more about the message. In rock gospel, to him, the music is more important than the message. Some gospel singers think more about survival like The Mighty Clouds of Joy. They believed that gospel music should be up-beat. I remember James Cleveland being played a lot on the radio in the 80's & the Mighty Clouds of Joy too. I began to gradually notice a change in gospel music altogether. There was more than choir, piano, and organ. There were more instruments added. The gospel singers had more of a studio sound than of a live sound. They began to sound more modern than old fashioned.James Cleveland was not only a gospel singer, but a musician, arranger, composer, and choir leader. Cleveland incorporated traditional black gospel, soul, pop, and jazz in arrangements for mass choirs. On top of that, it seemed he was successful with his belief in doing gospel music the old fashioned way. When some gospel singers couldn't make it his way.Like the Mighty Clouds of Joy. They did things different. They needed hit records, & they were a quartet kind of group. They had a hit record titled “Mighty High”. If you listen to the song, you can definitely hear the difference between them & James Cleveland. James Cleveland had no intention of crossing over into rock gospel. James Cleveland had sung songs like “Lord Do It, You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened, Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus, Where Is Your Faith In God, & Peace Be Still. When I think of him, I think of when I first heard him sing, “I Don't Feel No Ways Tired”. Throughout his career, Cleveland appeared on hundreds of recordings and earned 4 Grammy Awards. He was first gospel musician to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was inducted into the Gospel Musical Hall of Fame in 1984. Cleveland is regarded by many to be one of the greatest gospel singers that ever lived. He was known as the King of Gospel music.

Welcome to November 18, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate cold soup and a mighty mouse.  Though some like it hot, most people know the soup Vichyssoise is best served cold. Here in the States this French classic was first served at the Ritz Carlton by chef Louis Diat in the Summer of 1917. The chef was inspired to recreate the potato and leek soup of his childhood in France. But how did the French come to love cold soup anyway? Some believe that the tradition began with King Louis the XV who was so afraid of being poisoned that he had many servants taste his soup first. By the time it was approved for his consumption, the soup was cold and that is how King Louis came to prefer it. On National Vichyssoise Day we invite you to rediscover this culinary classic.   We give a shout out today to the world's most popular cartoon character: Mickey Mouse. Here are a few facts about Walt Disney's loveable rodent, that you might not have heard. His original name was Mortimer, but Disney's wife made him change it. His first appearance was in the 1928 silent cartoon, Steamboat Willie. Mickey didn't speak until the following year's animated feature The Carnival Kid, in which he worked as a food vendor. His first words were “Hot dog! Hot dog!” He was the first animated character to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978. Today we celebrate the birthday of this little mouse who's made a big impact. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Imagine a world where decisions are decided by the roll of a pair of dice. What to eat? Roll the dice. Who to marry? Roll again. How to die, and when? Get rolling. We can only imagine how different our lives might be if we surrendered every decision to the unpredictable fall of two numbered cubes. From Penn Jillette — yes, that Penn Jillette of the legendary duo Penn & Teller — comes Random: a crime novel that aims to bring Jillette's magic from the stage to the page, inviting readers into a caper story that explores ideas like faith and fate with irreverence, wit, and humor. In Random, Las Vegas native Bobby Ingersoll finds out that he has inherited a crushing gambling debt from his father of ill repute, just two weeks before his twenty-first birthday. The debt is owed to the deplorable Fraser Ruphart who oversees a bottom-rung criminal empire, and Bobby's prospects of paying off the note, which is due the day he turns 21, are bleak. In the nick of time, Bobby stumbles on enough cash to pay off the crime lord and change his family's fortune. Perhaps even more significantly, Bobby finds that he has become a “believer” of sorts. But Bobby does not consign his big break to a higher power — what Penn Jillette hero ever could? Instead, he devises and devotes himself to Random, a philosophy where his life choices are based entirely on the roll of his “lucky” dice. What follows is an amusing exploration that's less about what defines us and more about what divines us. Random combines the intellectual curiosity of Richard Dawkins with the humor and grit of an Elmore Leonard antihero, and its protagonist is Jillette's creative solution to navigating the chaos of the post-truth era. Penn Jillette is a cultural phenomenon as a solo personality and as half of the world-famous Emmy Award–winning magic duo Penn & Teller, whose live show spent years on Broadway and is now the longest-running headlining show in Las Vegas. The pair have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Jillette cohosted the Showtime series Penn & Teller: Bullshit! which was nominated for thirteen Emmy Awards and won him a Writers Guild Award. He currently cohosts the CW Network competition series Penn & Teller: Fool Us! His weekly podcast, Penn's Sunday School, was the number one downloaded podcast on iTunes during its debut week and was named by iTunes as Best New Comedy Podcast. He is the author of numerous books, including the nonfiction New York Times best-selling books Presto!: How I Made Over 100 Pounds Disappear and Other Magical Tales and God No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales; the novel Sock; and the essay collection Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday! How Past Extinctions At The La Brea Tar Pit Can Teach Us About Our Climate Future If you drive through Los Angeles, you'll pass by some of California's most iconic sites—the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Universal Studios, the Santa Monica Pier. But if you don't look for it, you may miss the La Brea tar pits—a place where Ice Age life from around 50 thousand years ago got trapped and preserved in sticky black ooze. Visitors can see megafauna, including skeletons of saber tooth cats and dire wolves, along with a vast collection of specimens, including things as small as beetle wings and rodent dung. La Brea was recently named as one of the world's most important geological heritage sites by the International Union of Geological Sciences. The museum is currently planning an extensive redesign that will seek to connect visitors to research, offering lessons about climate, extinction, and survival. Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, president and director of the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History, joins Ira to explain the significance of the site, and how a trove of Ice Age specimens can serve as a modern-day climate laboratory.   Across The Country, RSV Is Overwhelming Medical Systems If you have a child—or interact with children on a regular basis—odds are you've heard about a very contagious virus: RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus. This isn't a new illness, but it has been surging across the country. This has left parents and caretakers stressed about how to keep their kids safe. Hospitals across the country are having trouble coping with this year's surge, which has come earlier and stronger than normal. This week, Science Friday is spotlighting two regions affected by the wave: Wisconsin and Washington, D.C. The two regions have their own challenges when it comes to the RSV surge. In Wisconsin, care deserts and a large elderly population make containing this virus important to avoid dangerous consequences. In Washington, D.C., hospitals are feeling the effects of years of shutting down pediatric units to make room for adult beds. Joining Ira to talk about RSV in Wisconsin and Washington D.C. are two journalists who have been following this: Jenny Peek, news editor for Wisconsin Public Radio and Aja Drain, reporter at WAMU public radio.   What You Should Know About This RSV Surge Respiratory syncytial virus, known as RSV, is the number one cause of infant hospitalizations in the United States, and cases are soaring this year. Because young children have spent part—if not most—of their childhoods isolated, masking, or staying home due to the pandemic, many of their immune systems haven't been exposed to RSV until now. It's caused a huge surge in cases, and placed a heavy burden on pediatric clinics and hospitals. What do you need to know about the spike in infections? Ira talks with Dr. Carol Kao, a pediatrician and assistant professor at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, who has treated RSV for years. They dig into why this surge is happening now, the basics of the virus, how RSV is treated, and where we stand with an RSV vaccine.   Mapping Brain Connections Reinforces Theories On Human Cognition Brain regions are associated with different functions—the hippocampus is responsible for long-term memory, for example, and the frontal lobe for personality, behavior, and emotions. After decades of research using sophisticated brain imaging, there's a growing consensus among neuroscientists that understanding the connections between brain regions may be even more important than the functions of the regions themselves. When it comes to understanding human cognition, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Ira speaks with Dr. Stephanie Forkel, assistant professor at the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University in Nijmegen in the Netherlands, who wrote a review article in the journal Science about the importance of brain connectivity, and what it means for the future of neuroscience. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Karen Ocamb is now a leading LGBTQ journalist in LA, but decades ago she was a cranky teenager on the East Coast, who was very gently reproved by Paul Newman over some freshly caught fish. When Newman died, Ocamb filed a loving commentary on her two encounters with the star. Then, since Newman won the Academy's Jean Hersholt award at the Oscars in 1994, another distinguished journalist, Hollywood historian Alex Ben Block, goes to the Hollywood Walk of Fame to tell us who Jean Hersholt was and why he's beloved in the Industry. David Copperfield is a magician and entertainer, best known for his combination of storytelling and illusion, and described by Forbes as the most commercially successful magician in history.  His illusions have included the disappearance of a Learjet, the vanishing and reappearance of the Statue of Liberty, levitating over the Grand Canyon, walking through the Great Wall of China, escaping from Alcatraz prison, and flying on stage.  He has received 21 Emmy Awards, 11 Guinness World Records, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a knighthood by the French government, and the Living Legend award by the US Library of Congress.  You can watch him live performing 7 days a week at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.    Some interesting insights from this episode: While he's passionate about magic and one of the greatest magicians ever, at heart he is a storyteller. He is a multidimensional entertainer. His role models growing up weren't other magicians but actors and dancers like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. And storytellers like Walt Disney. He likes to make audiences feel something in the heart, not just a challenge in the brain. To this day he is inspired by a quote he read as a kid: “You're only as good as you dare to be bad.” You can't do something unique and special without taking some risks along the way. The formula for his success is summarized with his mantra: “Passion, preparation, and persistence.” He still has imposture syndrome at times which pushes him to continue to keep trying to perfect his craft.    “Excellence is about nothing ever being finished. It's a process that never ends.”

The beautiful cinematography of the film was shot over a five years period to authentically capture the coming of age story by screenwriter, Judy Morris. Chasing Wonders is a story of hope, possibility adventure, and overcoming your past – a heart-warming story of a young boy, who, encouraged by his grandfather (Olmos) to live a life of hope and possibility, takes off on the adventure of a lifetime to find the magical Emu Plains. His journey through the lush landscapes of Australia and Spain leads him to the heart of the human condition – learning to acknowledge the complexity of what comes before us but struggling not to be defined by the past. The Hollywood Walk of Famer earned an Academy nomination for Best Actor in the 1988 drama, Stand and Deliver. He gave a stellar lead performance as Bolivian- American educator Jaime Alfonso Escalante Gutiérrez.Olmos filmography is quite extensive. Literally, the man has stayed booked and busy since 1974. He's appeared in over 130 films, TV shows, and plays. One of his outstanding roles is perhaps,  Lieutenant Martin Castillo in the Miami Vice (1984) as a series regular. A fan-favorite for sure. But if we do talk about Lieutenant Castillo we must mention Olmos' role as Detective Gaff in Blade Runner (1982) and a brief reprise in the sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Gaff is the Los Angeles police officer who detains and escorts Deckard (Harrison Ford) throughout his mission as a ‘Blade Runner' to track down bioengineered humanoids known as replicants and terminally “retire” them.Olmos showed the world his versatility in both the Broadway play and film adaptation of the musical comedy, Zoot Suit. The story weaves the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial – resulting in the racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles. Olmos portrays El Pachuco, an idealized Zoot Suiter, who functions as narrator throughout the story and serves as Henry's conscience in both adaptations.Honestly, I could go on and on down Olmos' filmography, but we can't spotlight all of his other spectacular films right now. But, it wasn't an easy childhood, and Wolfgang is incredibly honest about the abusive relationship he had to endure with his step father at home, and how that has shaped who he is today, and where he still can't bring himself to travel to as a result. It was far away from Austria, in Los Angeles, California, where Wolfgang really made a name for himself, garnering the attention of the Hollywood elite, arguably becoming the world's first ‘celebrity chef' and spearheading a revolution of Californian cuisine with his flagship restaurant, Spago. For over thirty years he has also been the official caterer of the Oscars, lining the stomachs of every gong hungry nominee, and he was even awarded his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. When you have global restaurant empire like Wolfgang you spend a lot of time travelling, and this episode takes us to some fabulous locations all over the world from Sardinia to Mexico, Capri to Japan.Destination Recap:45 Park Lane, London, England Spago, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, USAAustriaColchester, Essex, EnglandVillach, AustriaArlberg, Austria Park City, Utah, USAL'Oustau de Baumanière, Provence, France SardiniaCala di Volpe, Sardinia Bonifacio, CorsicaCabo San Lucas, MexicoMontage Los Cabos, Mexico Rosewood Miramar Beach, Montecito, California, USACapri, Italy Quattro Passi Restaurant, Italy Budapest, Hungary Viva Mayr, AustriaJapanNile Cruise, Egypt UgandaIf you'd like to experience Wolfgang's cuisine, then you should check out the new outdoor dining terrace of CUT at 45 Park Lane hotel, part of the Dorchester Collection in London, which is open for lunch and dinner.
