See Frances Tophill at BBC Gardeners' World Spring Fair on Friday 3rd May, live on the BBC Gardeners' World Magazine stage. In 2016 Frances joined BBC's Gardeners' World doing a few strands for the programme, one on vegetable seed trials which she worked on from her local RHS garden, RHS Rosemoor and another on gardens situated in extreme locations.Frances is involved with the RHS campaign for school gardening and is passionate about enthusing young people to get into horticulture. She is working on a number of community gardening projects in the South West and is also helping the redevelopment of some costal gardens that were damaged by the 2014 storms. This is a particular passion of hers having grown up by the sea and was also part of her degree specialisation.Frances is a popular choice for gardening talks and has appeared at Blenheim Palace Flower Show, Hampton Court Flower Show and the Eden Project Green Fingers Festival to name a few. Hailing from Deal in Kent, Frances now lives in Exeter having completed her BSc in Horticulture with Plantmanship at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in 2013. As well as all things gardening Frances is a budding crafter and currently doing a pottery course.Frances' first book, First Time Gardener, was published in 2015 and her 2nd book, Container Gardening will be published in April this year. She has also written a column for Coast magazine on highs and lows of coastal gardening.

And then there was the plane crash!Read more about this on the Plotting Shed BlogSupport the show (https://www.ko-fi.com/theplottingshed)

Google Maps, for some unknown reason, doesn't show the lovely oasis of the Cluny Gardens Allotments in Southend-on-Sea as green. Don't they realise that the Benedictine monks of Prittlewell Priory gardened there for 400 years until Henry VIII scattered them to the four winds? The current King of the Cluny Gardens is Tony Wagstaff who is a Reparation and Community Practitioner with Southend's ISSP (Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme)...and, in ordinary language, a thoroughly nice bloke. Since 2011 Tony has designed a garden at the Hampton Court Flower Show and won ten medals and awards. Each year he takes a group of young people from the Early Help Family Support and Youth Offending Service and they create a memorable garden, some of which then go on to have a future life brightening up different parts of Southend. In this podcast we hear from Tony and three of his volunteers, Rob, Curtis and Jake and from case worker, Ricardo, and social worker, Jane. You can catch up with them at the Hampton Court Flower Show this year which runs from 5-11 July. They are creating one of the big show gardens, The Ability Garden. https://www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/rhs-hampton-court-palace-garden-festival/gardens/2021/the-ability-gardenYou can see The Therapeutic Garden talked about by Tony and Rob in the podcast here:https://www.southend.gov.uk/community-1/hampton-court-flower-showhttps://www.shootgardening.co.uk/article/southend-young-offenders-a-place-to-think-gardenThe music is The Parisian played by Kevin Macleod (with thanks for making this available under Creative Commons license).

Hear from Peter Lindeman of St.Michael’s Church about how church goers are being urged to go plastic free. Plus, Amanda Yorwerth reports from the Hampton Court Flower Show on the environmental messages from the show gardens.
In a special bonus episode, Ellen and Michael have been to the Hampton Court Flower Show. Like the true plantspeople they are, they spent most of the time in the floral marquee, marvelling at how many retro plants seem to be back on trend. From previously disdained Heathers to mumsy Chrysanthemums, the tide has changed. New breeding, new innovation, and new attitudes mean that lots of plants are being re-invigorated for new and old gardeners alike. We speak to Andy’s Airplants, Chrysanthemums Direct, Ottershaw Cacti, The Hebe Society, Calamazag Nursery and Forest Edge Nursery. Plus, we also had a chat with Hayley‘s Lottie Haven (a gardening Instagram luvvie!) who is much younger than Ellen and Michael, and gives an interesting viewpoint. She has largely been gardening without judgment, although she did raise a few eyebrows on the allotment.. Lastly, we find out what happens to all of those plants when the flower show closes. We chat to Wayward Plants about their fantastic plant recycling scheme, filling community gardens with colour and wildlife across the UK. Many of us find ourselves being and doing things that we never really planned... Philip hitched around Europe with his mate before earning a bob or two combining gardening with his art-work... then Hampton Court Flower Show before his Gold Award at Chelsea... How did that happen? Have a listen and find out - and enjoy the gift of the old gnarled oak tree with a beautiful and vibrant 'olive-tree' head, on the way. Produced by iamthehow.
After a decade working in London Pollyanna nee Polly Wilkinson, graduated with distinction from the English Gardening School in 2017 and now runs her garden design practice from her studio near Hampton Court, working on gardens across Surrey and London. Her conceptual garden 'A Very Modern Problem’ at Hampton Court Flower Show will be her first show garden. On this episode of The Sodshow garden podcast, Peter Donegan speaks with Polly to find out why. And there are very many of them. The Sodshow is available every Friday in iTunes, all good podcast stores and www.sodshow.com That garden, A Very Modern Problem sponsored by Worx Landroid Robotic Mowers - portrays the way social media can misrepresent the truth and create conflicting feelings of inspiration and inadequacy. On one side of the space is an attractive, unachievable and impractical garden, representing the filtered reality we expose ourselves to online. A smartphone divides the space and opposing this image is disorganised, unremarkable reality, weeds and all. Contributors to the garden include: Burnham Landscaping, Conquest Creative Spaces, Screen with Envy, London Stone, Loknan Architectural, Harrowden Turf, Raw Studio, Adam Christopher, Hortus Loci, Palms Exotics, Perpex Distribution Ltd, Garsons, Blooming Artificial Further info: web: www.pollyannawilkinson.com twitter: @PollyannaWGD fb: PollyannaWilkinsonGardenDesign Much thanks for listening X Twitter: @sodshow facebook: The Sodshow instagram: sodshow
