In the new film Cassandro, Gael García Bernal plays the real-life Mexican-American wrestler who came to international stardom by adopting the persona of the flamboyant Cassandro, the Liberace of Lucha Libre. It's the story of a queer man who challenges a macho and homophobic system through sheer showmanship – and earns the respect of his fellow wrestlers and audiences.
This week, Dana and Stephen are once again joined by Kat Chow, author of the memoir Seeing Ghosts. The panel begins by jumping into the ring with Cassandro, the oddly conflict-adverse biopic about the lucha libre superstar and exótico gay icon, Saúl Armendáriz, who is played terrifically by Gael García Bernal in a provocative, tour-de-force performance. Then, the trio wades into comedian–and future Daily Show host hopeful–Hasan Minhaj's thorny web of lies with Slate staff writer, Nitish Pahwa, who detailed the devastating impact of Minhaj's many falsehoods in his essay, “Hasan Minhaj Meant Something to Brown Americans. Was It All an Act?” Finally, the three react to “The 40 Greatest Stand-Alone TV Episodes of All Time,” written by the Slate Staff, a massive labor of love and fun thought experiment that spans The Sopranos, Atlanta, The Larry Sanders Show, Black Mirror, and High Maintenance. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses the impact the last few years have had on their lives, inspired by Katy Schneider's essay for The Cut, “The Pandemic Skip.” Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements: Dana: Dana sent this to everyone she knows–family, friends, etc. It's a new interview with Martin Scorsese, written by Zach Baron for GQ entitled “Martin Scorsese: ‘I Have To Find Out Who The Hell I Am.'” In addition to films and moviemaking (his latest, Killers of the Flower Moon, is set to be released in October), the legendary director, now 80, also speaks candidly about life, its inevitable end, and his own mortality. It's a dream of an interview and absolutely sublime. Kat: Small Things Like These, a beautifully written historical fiction novel by Claire Keegan about the horrific conditions women and children endured at Magdalene Laundries in Ireland. Stephen: “Quantum poetics,” an essay in Aeon written by William Egginton, a professor of humanities at James Hopkins University. In it, Egginton describes the ways Argentine short story author, Jorge Luis Borges, and German theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg “converged on the notion that language both enables and interferes with our grasp of reality.” Outro music: “Forbidden Love” by OTE Podcast production by Cameron Drews. Pablo Larraín has approached the legacy of Augusto Pinochet from several angles over the course of his filmography, but never quite as directly as in his latest, EL CONDE. And yet even when casting the Chilean dictator as his protagonist, Larraín seems less interested in the real man — who, as far as we know, is not an undying vampire — than what he represents about power, manipulation, and history's ongoing cycle thereof. We talk through our thoughts about how that plays out in EL CONDE, before bringing back Larraín's NO, a film that approaches Pinochet with more historical fidelity and less overt cynicism, but a similar interest in political deceit, compromised resistances, and what it takes to strike back at a dictator. And in Your Next Picture Show we recommend a couple of new releases with ties to this week's pairing: the Chilean documentary THE ETERNAL MEMORY and the Gael Garcia Bernal biopic CASSANDRO. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about NO, EL CONDE, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Some 13,000 UAW workers are off the job, demanding better pay and more job security. Their key issue: the shift from gas powered-vehicles to electric. New furniture is often made with cheap, flimsy materials, even those from West Elm and Restoration Hardware. Where can consumers find reliable, affordable options?
"Cassandro" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for Gael García Bernal's lead performance. Academy Award-winning documentarian director Roger Ross Williams ("Life Animated") made his narrative feature debut with this film and also received warm notices for his direction of an openly gay wrestler in the world of Lucha Libre wrestling. Ross Williams was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about his work on the film, moving from making shorts and documentaries into narrative features, collaborating with García Bernal and global superstar Bad Bunny, and more. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the film, which is now available to stream on Prime Video. Thank you, and enjoy! Taylor tells Josie about garment-maker/inventor Franz Reichelt and his fateful 1912 flight from the Eiffel Tower. Plus: unmasking Saúl Armendáriz, a.k.a. Cassandro, an iconic and exotic figure in the world of lucha libre (Mexican professional wrestling).
A new film directed by Roger Ross Williams tells the true story of luchador Saúl Armendáriz, who was determined to fight and win on his own terms as Cassandro…and made (gay) history in the process. We're absolutely mind boggled at the shoddiness of Expend4bles. Cassandro brings a flair to the Lucha Libre life. The Continental: From the World of John Wick has some big McShane sized shoes to fill. Finally, Still Up didn't put us to sleep. Note: At the time of recording SAG-AFTRA's guidance has not asked film critics and entertainment journalists to cease coverage. Grierson is back from the Toronto Film Festival, and we briefly talk about this time there. But not for too long, because we have movies to discuss. It's Kenneth Branagh's third Agatha Christie movie, "A Haunting in Venice." Also, Pablo Larrain's Netflix venture "El Conde" and the Gael Garcia Bernal wrestling picture "Cassandro." Timestamps: 14:12: "A Haunting in Venice" 41:19 "El Conde" 1:01:22 "Cassandro" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@gmail.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast.
Wall Street Journal reporter Erich Schwartzel says that film studios increasingly rely upon Chinese audiences to break even — which can result in self-censorship. His book is Red Carpet. Also, Justin Chang reviews the film Cassandro.
They say you should never invite a vampire into your home, because then they can come and go as they please, without even stopping to do the dishes. But what if you invite the director of a vampire movie into your podcast? Well, frankly, Pablo Larrain, the brilliant Chilean director of Jackie, No, and Spencer is welcome to drop into the podbooth any time after this week's episode, in which Chris Hewitt invites him to sit down and natter all about his new movie, El Conde, in which the Chilean director, General Pinochet, is reimagined as a bloodsucking, power-hungry vampire. Either side of that chat (which starts at 41:36.00 approximately, and goes on to 1:00:52.00 approx.), Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer. Together, the trio chat about James' Indiana Jones-related mishap in a film quiz, they look at the week's movie news (such as it is; this was recorded before the Aquaman 2 trailer dropped); and review Kenneth Branagh's A Haunting In Venice, El Conde, Brother, Love Life, and Cassandro. Plus, they tackle a listener question about the impact of Covid and the current strikes on cinema chains, and come up with a revolutionary path forward for cinema. Enjoy.
Nick chats with movie critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy about the new films "Dumb Money," the terrific true story involving the Game Stop stock madness that went on during the pandemic; the new Agatha Christie mystery "A Haunting in Venice;" and the portrait of a real-life luchador wrestler named "Cassandro." Erik also talks about some of the fine films he saw at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, including the latest from directors Richard Linklater and Alexander Payne. Then, Esmeralda Leon and Nick talk about ridiculous 90's disaster movies like "Volcano" and "Deep Impact", and the history of the disaster and nature-strikes-back films of the 70s like "Day of the Animals" (in which a shirtless Leslie Neilsen fights a grizzly bear) and "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" (in which Michael Caine SCREAMS every single one of his lines), and they discuss how those idiotic movies were actually the DC and Marvel films of that time period....and just as stupid. [Ep177]
