Larissa Herczeg is Founder and Managing Partner of 1 Seed Partners. One Seed Partners backs rising stars across the real estate complex Prior to founding 1 Seed she was Head of Seeding at Blue Owl, and prior to that CIO at Oak Street Capital before which she had series of financial roles. She was a 2025 Honoree for the Influential Women in Institutional Investing Awards.  Our conversation traces Larissa's first foray into real estate - how it was a default option rather than an original direction - but how it turned out optimally. We discuss the reasons she was attracted to the industry and the strong "human" component that drives deal success as well as organizational sustainability. We turn then to discuss the seeding business in particular, and how so much more than capital is involved. We discuss today's landscape for emerging managers, how the goal posts have changed and how barriers to entry affect capital raising as well as getting a head start. This podcast is kindly sponsored by Evanston Capital and Alvine Capital. For over 20 years Evanston Capital has had a key focus in identifying early-stage investment managers it believes are capable of generating long-term, value-added returns in complex, innovative strategy areas. MOOR of the Word with Pastor Chuck Pourciau

The harvest belongs to God, but the sowing belongs to us. In the parable of the sower, Jesus reminds believers that our responsibility is not to predict results but to faithfully spread the gospel. This episode encourages us to keep planting seeds with confidence, knowing God alone brings the growth and the victory.

The call to spread the gospel to the lost and dying world is given to each individual Christian, and to the church collectively. The task can be daunting, and Christians often shrink from it. The words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:5-17 give insight into the nature of sowing the seed of God's word, and our involvment in it. His teaching should embolden us to do God's work.

I bought the seeds. I tilled the soil. I watered, waited, and expected growth. But nothing bloomed at my house. The same seeds, planted in my mom's yard, flourished effortlessly. What I worked for didn't produce in my ground — it thrived in hers. And that's when I learned my lesson: sometimes the issue isn't the seed. It's the soil.2 Corinthians 9:6–8 reminds us that what we sow matters — and how we sow matters. Generosity, obedience, effort, time, money, love — all of it is seed. But not every environment is conducive to growth. Not every space is assigned to yield for you. And sometimes, what you're laboring over isn't meant to harvest in your hands. The blessing may still come — just not in the way you expected. There's also posture. Are we sowing from comparison? From ego? From fear of missing out? Or are we sowing cheerfully, aligned with God's direction? Because Proverbs 10:22 reminds us that the blessing of the Lord adds no sorrow. This is a reminder to be discerning about your soil. To ask whether the ground you're investing in is assigned or just accessible. To trust that no seed planted in obedience is ever wasted — but not every seed is meant for your harvest.Watch what you sow.Watch where you sow.And most importantly, watch your heart while you do it. References Scriptures:2 Corinthians 9:6-8Proverbs 10:22Support the show

EP316 Peat Free Alternatives For Sowing Seed Rethinking Peat In Seed Starting

Master My Garden Podcast

Peat built our seed-starting habits because it made life easy: even moisture, airy structure, predictable results. But when carbon-rich bogs and vanishing habitats enter the frame, “easy” stops feeling right. We take a clear-eyed look at what peat-free really means for gardeners in Ireland, the UK, and the US—beyond labels, beyond trends—and ask how to balance strong germination with true environmental sense. We start by mapping the policy shifts and market realities: Ireland still sells mostly peat-based compost; the UK's retail ban has pushed rapid innovation; the US market offers a mature spread of growing media, from coir and wood fibre to biochar, vermicast, and tailored blends. Then we dig into performance. Peat-free mixes can be excellent but inconsistent, changing with feedstocks and age. Two bags from the same pallet may give different germination and salt levels. We explain why that happens, how peat-free holds water differently, and how to adjust watering and timing to avoid stalled seedlings or damping-off.From there, we get practical. We're trialling three seed-starting paths this season: a local vermicast blend opened with perlite and a touch of biochar for moisture balance; a highly regarded coir-forward seed mix known for uniform germination; and a very small reserve of peat-based compost used only for sowing. We also share DIY routes: hot-composting followed by a long cure to stabilise the material, blending with sharp sand or perlite, and using inert media like grit plus vermiculite for germination before an early prick-out into a proven mix. Along the way, we question coir's “green” halo by tracing its journey across oceans and factories—great performance can still carry a heavy footprint if it travels farther than your holidays. If you want reliable seedlings without greenwash, this conversation gives you a framework: use imports sparingly where they truly shine, switch to local bulk mixes for planters and potting on, learn the moisture cues of peat-free, and record what works in your climate. We'd love to hear your winning recipes and failures too. In this Midweek sermon, Co-Pastor Ezekiel Perez explores the biblical concept of manna as a lesson in financial stewardship and spiritual dependence. Drawing from Exodus 16, he highlights how God provided manna to the Israelites in the desert, teaching them to rely on Him daily. Co-Pastor emphasizes that this period in the desert was a necessary season for character development, where God used manna to instill discipline and trust. He warns against the dangers of hoarding and the survival mentality, urging believers to focus on their needs rather than wants. By reflecting on the lessons of manna, Co-Pastor encourages the congregation to practice gratitude, generosity, and contentment, preparing them for the abundance of the promised land. The sermon concludes with a call to embrace God's provision and to remember the lessons learned in times of scarcity.Co-Pastor Ezekiel Perez | February 10, 2026The Fountain Apostolic ChurchSOW (2026)Learn more at tfachurch.com/plus

Episode 643: Potato Prep, Celery Sowing & Composting Insights

The veg grower podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2026 25:30

Welcome back to another episode of The Veg Grower Podcast. This week has very much been about working with the weather, preparing for the season ahead, and slowing things down where patience is required. From soggy allotment soil and potato bed preparation, to sowing celery in the potting shed, plus a cracking book all about composting, there's plenty to catch up on. Down on the Allotment: Preparing the Potato Beds It's been a wet one this week. The ground has been absolutely saturated in places, but despite that, progress has still been made. The main focus on the allotment has been preparing the potato beds. Over winter, green manures have been growing on these beds, and now they've been cut down to soil level. Rather than removing the material, everything has been left in place and covered with a couple of inches of compost. This will break down over the next few weeks, adding organic matter and nutrition ready for planting. Potatoes usually go in around 20 March, so this preparation gives the soil time to settle and start doing its thing. Seed potatoes are being handled slightly differently this year too. Instead of buying early and storing them for weeks, they've been ordered to arrive towards the end of February. This reduces the need for long chitting and avoids weak, leggy shoots developing too early. Despite the noise from a new nearby road, it's good to feel like the allotment is moving forward and winter jobs are finally being ticked off. Seed of the Month: Celery Back home in the potting shed, this month's seed of the month is celery — a crop that often gets an unfair reputation. Celery isn't difficult, but it is slow and very honest about what it needs. Home-grown celery has far more flavour than shop-bought, and you don't even need to wait for full heads. Young stems and leaves are perfect for soups and stocks. Celery has been sown early because it needs a long growing season. The seeds are tiny and need light to germinate, so they're scattered on the surface of the compost rather than covered. They're then placed into a heated propagator and left alone — patience is key, as germination can take a few weeks. One important point with celery is consistency. It hates drying out and dislikes any checks in growth. This makes sense when you realise celery is a coastal plant by origin, so steady moisture is essential throughout its life. Once seedlings are large enough, they'll be potted on gradually, grown steadily, and planted out towards the end of April into rich, moisture-retentive soil. With regular watering and feeding, harvesting can begin in late summer. In the Kitchen: Crispy Potato & Leek Hash This week's recipe is a simple, humble favourite — crispy potato and leek hash with garlic and herbs. With plenty of potatoes in store, leeks still coming out of the ground, and herbs to hand, this felt like the perfect quick midweek meal. Parboiled potatoes are crisped up in a pan before adding leeks, garlic and herbs, finished with seasoning, butter, and a sprinkle of cheese. It's cheap, filling, adaptable, and ideal for growers cooking from what they've got rather than following strict recipes. Book of the Month: Composting by Bob Flowerdew January's book of the month has been Composting by Bob Flowerdew, and it's been a thoroughly enjoyable read. The book covers what actually happens inside a compost heap, the different ways compost can be made, and the pros and cons of each approach. Rather than telling you how to compost, it gives you the information and lets you decide what works best for you — something that feels very true to gardening as a whole. It's an easy, readable book that still manages to inspire confidence and encourage you to do more with compost, whether at home or on the allotment. February's read will be No Dig by Charles Dowding, borrowed from the library and ready to get started.

Touching Lives with Dr. James Merritt

One of the most amazing sights in America is the giant Sequoia tree. It towers up to 325 feet tall, weighs over 6,000 tons, and can live more than 3,000 years. The famous General Sherman tree is 275 feet tall and 100 feet wide at its trunk, with roots stretching 80 feet in diameter. But that massive, nearly indestructible tree started from a seed no bigger than a tomato seed. That's the power of a single seed. And when that tree matures, it produces 400,000 seeds every year, capable of creating entire forests. Jesus understood this power, which is why He told a parable about the most powerful seed of all, God's Word. Every believer is called to be a seed sower, and Psalm 126 gives us both the promise and the pattern of what that looks like. “Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them” (Psalm 126:5–6, NIV). Once you understand what it means to “sow with tears,” you'll learn why some seeds produce forests while others never break ground.

Any hours that you can put into the garden now, will reward you hugely come spring and summer, when the jobs mount up. Quick - more tea and biscuits! With Saul having indoor mouse problems (three of them!) and Lucy admitting her addiction to homogenous gravel, the duo reveal what really presses a professional gardener's buttons during winter. Thankfully, rose pruning season is also in earnest so Lucy is getting her horticultural fix. Saul has been pressing new buttons, too (see his instagram link, below) and discovering that in social media world, January is the new February for seed sowing. Is this wise, or should seed packets remain closed a little longer? Even after spiritual abuse, THIS is why I still tithe

Spiritual abuse around money almost made us stop giving altogether.   We've seen manipulation from the pulpit. We've witnessed leaders mishandle funds. We've felt the tension between honoring God and distrusting institutions.   And yet… we still tithe.   In this episode, Bob and Linda have an honest, nuanced conversation about why they chose not to let other people's failures steal something God wanted to use for their freedom. This is not a legalistic defense of tithing.   It's a heart-level conversation about obedience, trust, healing, and separating God's command from human hypocrisy.   If you've ever thought: "I don't trust where the money goes" "I've seen too much abuse" "Is tithing even for today?" "I want to honor God, but I'm conflicted" This episode is for you.   Key Scriptures (NLT) Proverbs 3:9–10 — Honor the Lord with your wealth Deuteronomy 8:18 — God gives the power to create wealth Matthew 6:33 — Seek first the Kingdom Luke 6:38 — Give, and it will be given to you 2 Corinthians 9 — Sowing and reaping with the right heart Matthew 23:23 — Jesus affirms tithing without legalism   Action Item for This Week Take 10 quiet minutes and pray this simple prayer: "God, what does generosity look like for me right now?" Write down what comes to mind. Don't rush it. Don't rationalize it. Just ask… and listen.   Don't let someone else's disobedience steal your opportunity to trust God.

You know…I sure do enjoy watching a garden grow . About this time of year every year… as the cold winter weather sets in… I start thinking about the spring. And the further along we go into the winter… the more I long for it. And one of the things that really stokes that fire… is when I get those first seed catalogs. I start thinking about tilling up that garden and sowing some seeds. I just absolutely enjoy watching… as God makes those little ol' bitty things… spring up and grow! I just absolutely love to watch a garden grow. And as I thought about that this week… I began to think about something else. Did you know that we as Christians are gardeners? Did you know that we… as Christians… are seed sowers? This morning and next Sunday… I want to spend some time… taking a look at a parable… that we haven't visited in a while. So… if you have God's Word… turn with me to Matthew 13 … and let's begin talking about this subject, "Sowing seed!"

Dr. Andrew Hammond discusses the UAE's notable involvement in multiple conflicts around the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, in partnership with Israel. The two small countries seek to maximize their regional power by controlling key positions along the Red Sea's maritime corridor, while also gaining a foothold in Africa to secure future influence there. Dr. Hammond is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Australian National University.
