Hibo Wardere is a Somali-born author, activist, and female genital mutilation survivor based in the UK. At the age of six, Hibo was bullied on the playground for not being ‘cut.' Desperately wanting to fit in, she asked her mother to give her the cut the other girls had. She never imagined the horror she would then be subjected to as she describes "it was like being butchered alive." For survivors of FGM, the humiliation doesn't end with the cutting; its consequences are lifelong with side effects such as infertility, kidney problems, keloids, painful menstruation and sex, and even maternal death. In this episode we explore the motivations for mothers to repeat the violence they endured as girls, perpetuating a 3000-year old woman-hating practice across cultures and religions, the psychological ramifications for survivors, and what women need to heal. Hibo calls for women everywhere to unite in struggle as the strength of our shared experience is one of the most powerful forces in the world. Hibo Wardere is an FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) Consultant, author, activist, policy advisor and global speaker. In this episode, we talk about FGM, her own experiences and how we can protect girls in the UK. Imagine for a moment that you are 6-years-old and you are woken in the early hours, bathed and then dressed in rags before being led down to an ominous looking tent at the end of your garden. And there, you are subjected to the cruellest cut, ordered by your own mother. Forced down on a bed, her legs held apart, Hibo Wardere was made to undergo female genital cutting, a process so brutal, she nearly died. As a teenager she moved to London in the shadow of the Somalian Civil War where she quickly learnt the procedure she had undergone in her home country was not 'normal' in the west. She embarked on a journey to understand FGM and its roots, whilst raising her own family and dealing with the devastating consequences of the cutting in her own life. Today Hibo finds herself working in London as an FGM campaigner, helping young girls whose families plan to take them abroad for the procedure. She has vowed to devote herself to the campaign against FGM. I reached out to my guest, Hibo Wardere, in this week's episode after hearing her being interviewed on BBC Radio 2 with Jeremy VineShe was real, raw and authentic and wasn't afraid to say it like it was and I thought she was a warrior! And I'm very grateful to say that she has now become a dear friendAt the age of six, she was the victim of type 3 FGM, an event she has described as "being engulfed in pain from head to toe". Every day for the next ten years, she sought answers from her mother, but was always denied a response. When she was 16, she finally struck a deal with a relative, who promised to tell her everything about what happened after her wedding night. She was horrified by the revelations, and soon fled to London after the civil war broke out in the 1989 when she was just a teenager She currently works as a mediator and an FGM educator. Her testimonials and campaigning work have made her one of Britain's most prominent campaigners about FGM and she has appeared in numerous publications including the Telegraph, the BBC and The GuardianSome key points from our interview:How looking back she now understands that she was groomed just before she was cut at six years oldHow she believes that FGM is a form of child abuseHow she has changed from being silenced and introverted by her experience to being outspoken and is passionate about speaking outHow she's never looked back after she was invited to speak at the school she volunteered at, even though she was terrifiedHow she's now determined to do all she can as an FGM activist and speaker, to end this global barbaric practise "I was never broken, I was just hidden under the rubbles of pain" - Hibo Wardere You can get more information about Hibo here: https://www.facebook.com/hibo.wardere * * * *"Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers.
