The scandal of grooming gangs targeting vulnerable girls in places like Rotherham and Oldham has dominated the news in 2025. But this week on the podcast Rob Parsons sheds a light on a sickening crime that's had a lot less publicity. Child sex abuse by family members is far more common than most people think. But in one part of the North of England, West Yorkshire, the region's mayor, a children's charity and even a leading broadcaster want to help victims talk about their experience to stop other people going through the same ordeal they've had to endure. On a visit to the Leeds headquarters of Channel 4, which just hosted a powerful discussion about the need protect children from sexual abusers, Rob speaks to Emily Victoria, a businesswoman who confronted the abuse she suffered at her father's hands for a TV documentary. And Debra Radford of the NSPCC charity and West Yorkshire deputy mayor Alison Lowe talk about the region is aiming to lead the way on keeping girls safe. This episode might make you think a little differently about the recent grooming gangs coverage, particularly whether the media focus on a certain type of offending might be putting off the victims of other types of abuse from reporting what's happened to them. NOTE: This episode includes themes of child sexual abuse, violence, and suicide. The following material may be distressing to some listeners.  Bonfire of the Vanities novelist Tom Wolfe would have described our guest for this episode as a ‘King of the World'. A banker who through skill and a love of risk made his fortune as a city trader.  Now the CEO of the World Gold Council, David Tait is also an accomplished mountaineer having climbed Everest an astonishing five times, in the process raising over £8m for charity.  But Wolfe's description would, in fact, not come close to explaining the truth of who David really is.The clue lies in the beneficiary of David's incredible fund raising, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. For David, at the age of 10, was the victim of sexual abuse at the hands of his grandfather's brother and three other men. He was also abused by his own father.Like so many who suffer this horror David kept his abuse secret.  Doing so, he believes, allowed him to build that successful city life … but at a terrible price that very nearly claimed his life.  David's story was portrayed movingly in the 2020 film Sulphur and White named after the butterfly that become a symbol of hope for David. In this podcast we talk about that film and a personal crisis journey that can only be described as inspiring.  Please remember - if you, or anyone you know needs support for child abuse, you can reach out to NSPCC here: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/what-is-child-abuse/types-of-abuse/child-sexual-abuse/ and here 0808 800 5000.  LINKSSulphur and White Watch Sulphur and White | Prime Video (amazon.co.uk)      Sulphur and White - Apple TV (UK)Sulphur and White | Official Movie Website | Watch Now  David's websiteDavid Tait  NSPCC Donate to Charity Online | Give to NSPCC today | NSPCC  Stream/buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bm    Some Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk      Your Daily Practice: Sleep by Myndstream: https://open.spotify.com/track/5OX9XgJufFz9g63o2Dv2i5?si=b2f9397c92084682    Host – Andy Coulson   CWC team: Jane Sankey, Louise Difford, Mabel Pickering   With special thanks to Ioana Barbu and the brilliant people at Global      For all PR and guest approaches please contact – podcast@coulsonpartners.comFull transcipthttps://www.crisiswhatcrisis.com/podcasts/david-tait-on-how-he-turned-the-darkest-of-secret-crises-into-a-superpower/

Online safety campaigner and advisor to the Molly Rose foundation In this eye-opening video, Andy Burrows exposes the shocking reality of online risks faced by children and teens today. Drawing upon years of experience working at the NSPCC, Andy reveals startling statistics that highlight the urgent need to protect young people in the digital age. Key topics covered: 0:00 - The awareness of online risks among children 1:05 - The importance of creating a safe space for disclosure 1:31 - How targeted advertisements ruthlessly exploit children for profit 1:59 - Using metaphors to understand the insidious nature of online threats Andy emphasises that while children are all too aware of the dangers they face online, many struggle to disclose their experiences out of fear. He stresses the critical role supportive adults play in fostering a culture where children feel empowered to seek help. Through powerful analogies, like comparing targeted ads to personalized billboards in "Minority Report", Andy illustrates how product design has been weaponized against children. Parents, he argues, would be terrified if they truly grasped the extent of this exploitation. This video is a wake-up call for anyone concerned about child safety in the digital world. It's not every day that one of our guests from the world of finance has successfully scaled Everest 5 times, been awarded an MBE by the Queen, raised millions for charity, and is a vocal ambassador for the NSPCC. For his day job, he led trading desks at Goldmans, CS, UBS and Bluecrest. If that wasn't enough for most people, he then became sufficiently intrigued by the changing world of gold to become CEO of the World Gold Council (WGC). In this fascinating conversation, David explains how the WGC is bringing gold bullion into the digital age from regulatory, provenance, ESG, and tokenisation angles. He assesses growing institutional demand (gold prices have hit record highs in recent weeks), describes the supply side dynamics, examines why gold improves the risk/return characteristics in a portfolio, why gold mining companies may be too cheap, and how the future may look for gold. Finally, David reflects on his childhood as a victim of child sexual abuse, the agony and therapy of the film about him, Sulphur & White, and the priorities which need addressing (in the UK alone, 1 in 20 children suffer sexual abuse). The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by Schroders and IFM Investors Sign up to our Newsletter | Follow us on LinkedIn | Watch on YouTube

Welcome back to the second installment of our two-part episode featuring Eleanor Rowland, the Director of Safeguarding & Inclusion at Fulham Football Club. In this episode, Eleanor opens up with incredible vulnerability about her journey with General Anxiety Disorder and its influence on her professional life. Eleanor generously shares her personal strategies for preparing for public speaking engagements, offering insights into how she ensures comfort and confidence in these high-pressure situations. It's a candid look at the techniques that help her navigate moments that could otherwise be overwhelming due to her anxiety. Moreover, Eleanor takes us through the fascinating story of how she carved out her unique role within the club. She reveals the determination and vision required to transition her position from part-time to full-time, highlighting her innovative approach to shaping her career path. One of the most compelling parts of our conversation is when Eleanor discusses the concept of self-doubt. She reflects on moments when doubt crept in and how she chose to confront it head-on rather than allowing it to deter her progress. Her story is a powerful reminder of the strength that lies in acknowledging our challenges and actively working through them, rather than letting them define or limit us. This episode is not just about the successes and hurdles of a high-ranking executive in the sports industry; it's an exploration of resilience, mental health awareness, and the relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth. The UK's Online Safety Bill has been in the pipeline for a number of years now, and is currently being considered by the House of Lords. The proposed bill has caused a lot of controversy due to its broad ambitions and a perceived threat to people's privacy. But it's been welcomed in some quarters, and in particular by children's charities like the NSPCC, who say that it's needed to tackle grooming and child sexual abuse online. Indeed, the NSPCC says such measures are long overdue and that over 3,500 online sex crimes are likely happening each month that the bill is delayed. How does online grooming happen, and who are the typical targets ? Does this only happen online? How can you identify a child victim ? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! The pandemic saw thousands of children moving online to learn, socialise, and play. Unfortunately, internet predators have followed them there, using highly sophisticated tactics to reach children and coerce them into sexual activities. We were recently contacted by our listener therapist, Frances, who says that she's been dealing with cases of grooming online and thinks it's vital that we discuss the topic. She's right to highlight it. I've been contacted by parents who have confided in me that their teen has fallen victim; both boys and girls. The disturbing nature of their activity has been exposed by Internet Watch Foundation analysts whose job it is to track down and view some of the very worst child sexual abuse material on the internet so it can be removed and blocked. They've seen a massive increase in abuse since lockdown.  The one thing I've learned from all of the research I've been doing is that we are pretty much the only gatekeepers online; the apps constantly duck responsibility. The key watershed is 13, because the internet companies aren't allowed to collect data on people below that age. But that's still incredibly young for most kids to be accessing the sort of things that are online, and often they lie about their age to get apps they aren't legally allowed. We cover how to keep our teens safe, how to spot grooming, and what to do if your kid's a victim.https://www.victimsupport.org.uk/you-co/types-crime/sex-crimes/grooming/#:~:text=It's%20important%20to%20think%20carefully,that%20you%20can%20get%20help.https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/should-i-make-a-report-to-ceop-yp/The story of Breck, who was lured to his death by a groomer https://www.breckfoundation.org/Documentary series: Undercover Underagehttps://www.nspcc.org.uk/about-us/news-opinion/2023/2023-08-14-82-rise-in-online-grooming-crimes-against-children-in-the-last-5-years/#https://legaljobs.io/blog/online-predators-statistics/#:~:text=66.7%25%20of%20online%20predators'%  Report abuse Contact our Helpline by calling 0808 800 5000 or emailing help@NSPCC.org.uk Call our new NSPCC helpine, Report Abuse in Education on 0800 136 663  If they're under 18, they can use Childline and the Internet Watch Foundation's discreet Report Remove tool to see if it can be taken down. Thanks for listening. We hear from Paddi Vint, Development Manager for the NSPCC and a woman we call Margaret, who experienced coercive control in a previous relationship. Would you use fig and pine nut hand scrub? Or perhaps some tree gum anti-wrinkle cream? Just a few of the 16th century beauty recipes Professor Jill Burke has included in her new book, How to be a Renaissance Woman. Jill discusses 16th century women's body anxieties and the men who wrote beauty tips for them. Actor and writer Georgie Grier has shared a post on social media after her opening show at the Edinburgh Fringe had just one person in the audience. She's had replies of support and encouragement from thousands of people, including comedian Jason Manford. She tells us what it was like to perform to one person, and how she feels about the reaction she's getting. There are plenty of peculiar tunes to soak up this week on CheapShow. The segment may be called Silverman's Platter, but on this edition of the podcast, Paul's brought along a few interesting records to listen to. A song based on popular TV show “Minder” and styled after Chas N Dave brings Paul and Eli's attention to the work of The Firm, a music group that churned out one of the 1980s biggest novelty pop hits. Apparently, they had a whole album, so the cheap chaps take a quick tour of their output. There is also a strange album to listen to that was designed to help raise fund for children's charity NSPCC in 1984. It's packed with some obvious and not so obvious celebrities from the period, but we focus on Dennis Waterman's rock n roll Lollipop song and Felicity Kendall's moog flavoured ditty about fairies! It's also time to return to the Country Urban Noodle Test Lab International Cuisine Kitchen with a few instant noodles that are new to Eli's palate. Mr Silverman takes on a Lucky Me beef bone marrow treat and whatever the hell a “Milky Me” is! To make things more interesting, Paul and Eli also have got their own deities in small boxes. This isn't going to be a problem at all! All this week on the programme we are looking at the topic of loneliness. Women are statistically more likely to be lonely and so in today's programme we will look at ways to cope with those feelings and if it's possible to reframe them. Anita is joined by Radio 4's All in the Mind presenter Claudia Hammond and author of Alonement, Francesca Specter. The comedian Nicole Travolta is taking her one-woman show Doing Alright to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It chronicles her life as a compulsive shopper, how she freed herself from debt, shame and the weight of a famous last name, one spray tan at a time. When she is not dressed up in a wig doing impressions, she can also be found performing comedy around LA. The children's charity NSPCC says that its Helpline received over one thousand contacts last year about children experiencing coercive and controlling behaviour, a form of domestic abuse. The school summer holidays can be a particularly difficult time for some of these children. If you are worried about someone, what should you do? Anita is joined by Paddi Vint, Development Manager for the NSPCC and a woman we call Margaret, who experienced coercive control in a previous relationship. The Cuban-Spanish singer-songwriter Lucy Calcines joins Anita to sing live, ahead of her headline performance at the UK's largest Latin music and dance festival this weekend. She shot to fame after her appearance on the Voice TV show in 2020, when she achieved a four chair turn by superstar coaches Meghan Trainor, Sir Tom Jones, Olly Murs and will.i.am. Anita will also be joined by the festival organiser, Amaranta Wright, to talk about all things Latin. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rebecca Myatt Studio manager: Bob Nettles

Indeed the NSPCC says such measures are long overdue and that over 3,500 online sex crimes are likely happening each month that the bill is delayed. How does online grooming happen, and who are the typical targets ? Does this only happen online? How can you identify a child victim ? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! TRIGGER WARNING- Discussion on sexual abuse How do we make a change in systems and organizations that are very avid in covering up sexual abuse? How do we get through to parents that need to protect their children vs following a "Man of God"? Abi and Anne sit down with the founder of Something To Say, Jeremy Indika, who dives into his pursuit of bringing a very taboo subject to the public in any way he can. Jeremy, being a survivor himself, offers advice to the current systemic sexual abuse inside the PBCC. Jeremy's passion of his mission, "to get this subject on everyone's table because this is everyone's concern", shows in his ability to articulate what each of us could do to help and the different angles sexual abuse needs to be looked at. Nearly half a million young people in the UK are members of the Scout Association. The organisation employs 143,000 adult volunteers and leads the way in nurturing a love of the outdoors and providing practical skills which will allow members to make a positive contribution to society. But not everyone has been enriched by the experience. File on 4 has learned that in the last ten years the Scout Association has paid out £6m to scouts who were abused. Reporter Hayley Hassall hears from some female abuse survivors who say they were ignored when they reported abuse. The Scout Movement says it is "deeply sorry" for anyone who has suffered abuse. Now there are calls for the organsiation to overhaul its safeguarding policy. John Cameron, the former director of ChildLine and head of child protection operations at the NSPCC, tells File on 4 that voluntary organisations would benefit from an independent body overseeing safeguarding practices. She talks to Woman's Hour about her medical achievements, which she downplays to, ‘It's just glorified plumbing,' as detailed in her memoir ‘Life in Her Hands.' A a new app to block child abuse images has received £1.8m pounds of EU funding, with the aim to help combat what has been described as a "growing demand" for child abuse images. Two-thirds of parents (65%) say they've been concerned by content their child has viewed online, according to new research released to mark Safer Internet Day. The findings from a poll commissioned by Vodafone further suggest only 1 in 8 parents (13%) feel very confident with the safety features designed to keep children safe online The study highlights a digital knowledge gap between the generations, with 12 revealed to be the age at which parents feel their child's digital knowledge overtakes their own. 6 in 10 parents (60%) said they wished they were more digitally savvy with two-thirds (66%) admitting they are completely baffled by digital slang words, such us "oomf" (one of my friends), "cheugy" (out of date; trying too hard) and "smishing" (a scam involving the use of text messages). As the debate over the long-awaited Online Safety Bill continues to make headlines, 45% of respondents said they were most concerned about their child's exposure to harmful or inappropriate content. They also worried about online bullying (40%), strangers communicating with their child (38%) and about how their child's mental health could be affected (26%). Social media apps such as Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook were the online platforms that prompted the most concerns about safety from parents, with more than a quarter (27%) claiming they would feel more at ease with their child using the internet if they had a better understanding of how to keep them safe. Remarkably, while around 1 in 7 (15%) claim their child has previously managed to disable in internet safety settings they have put in place, nearly 1 in 6 (17%) parents believe their children are safe online without supervision or controls. The findings are released in line with the launch of Vodafone's interactive Digital Parenting Pro, one of the biggest parental controls and safety settings resources in the UK. Created in partnership with Digital Awareness UK, the hub, which includes tips from NSPCC experts, will equip parents and carers with all the information and tools they need to feel confident about the social media apps their children use, the games they play and the sites they access. Joining the conversation is Emma Robertson who campaigns to help young people survive and thrive online. She'll be sharing her top tips on how parents can keep their children safe online and on what young people themselves can do to avoid potentially harmful content. Hosted on Acast.
