After wowing audiences with her feature directorial debut "The Edge Of Seventeen" in 2016, writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig turned her eye toward Judy Blume's influential coming-of-age book and adapted it into the critically beloved "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret." The film had its world premiere at the San Francisco International Film Festival and has been picking up several wins throughout this awards season, including most recently, Best Supporting Performance from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for Rachel McAdams and a Gotham and Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Kelly Fremon Craig. Kelly was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about her work on the film, what it has meant to her, the enduring legacy of the 1970 novel, and more. Please be sure to check out the film, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at the 96th Academy Awards. Thank you, and enjoy! Fran and Babs from Over/underrated: a music podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Frans choice The Edge of Seventeen. The Edge of Seventeen is a 2016 coming-of-age comedy-drama starring Hailee Steinfeld as 17 year-old Nadine who is dealing with recently losing her beloved father, falling out with her best friend, boys and other teenage dramas. Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig is also stars Woody Harrelson as her school teacher, Haley Lu Richardson as Nadine's (ex) best friend Krista and Kyra Sedgwick as Nadine's mum. Despite its slightly gloomy synopsis The Edge of Seventeen swings more towards the comedy elements as Nadine navigates being a teenager in a world that doesn't understand her while realising the world is not actually as against her as she thinks. Anchored by a strong performance by Steinfeld, The Edge of Seventeen is an above average teen film. However, Edge of Seventeen the song sadly does not feature on the soundtrack. Strong recommendability but slightly repeat viewing scores gives The Edge of Seventeen an overall score of 3.75. Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why The Edge of Seventeen Should've Been Gay. First things first, this movie stars Hailee Steinfeld as Nadine. So off the bat it's already clearly supposed to be gay. Nadine and Krista have been madly in love since they met as children, but somehow they don't end up together. Instead they have a horrific friend breakup because Krista starts dating Nadine's brother. Somehow Hailee Steinfeld keeps getting cast as the lesbian who cannot stop sleeping with their sister-in-law. We have talked before about the trope of the brother as a stand in when movies are too cowardly to be gay. This movie is the extreme version of that. Every classic mistake ever made by closeted high school kids happens in this movie. The film really makes so much more sense when viewed through a gay lens, but it is also so painful to watch. One thing is for sure, The Edge of Seventeen Should've Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. Love, Simon (2018) premiered to mixed reviews from the queer community and critics alike. Supporters of the film (like Kevin's mother-in-law) praised the boldness of the first major studio-released gay teen romance, while its detractors criticized the film's aim at universality of a queer experience. This week, Jake and Kevin talk about where this movie hits and misses, particularly compared to one of its coming-out-predecessors, Edge of Seventeen (1998). This charming movie was written and directed by actual gay people and feels ahead of its time in dealing with the sensitivities of coming out. How did Love, Simon get things wrong that Edge of Seventeen got right 20 years earlier? Is everything Lea DeLaria touches gold? What the hell is going on at Simon's high school? Come speculate wildly with us! Our miniseries on our favorite cinematic sissies sails onward with a deep dive into Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Drink up me hearties, yo-ho!
Dustin and Nick learn that in the end maybe it does matter as they look back at Linkin Park's debut album Hybrid Theory, both revisiting the album for the first time since the tragic death of vocalist Chester Bennington.

Happy Administrative Professionals Week! In this episode I get to interview the women who are the face and the voice of Salinas Elementary School, the administrative support staff that run the office, answer the phones, greet visitors, take temperatures daily, register new families, order supplies, comfort students, love on parents, keep teacher classrooms supplied with any and all materials, and generally maintain the high standards of customer service that our community deserves. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to these women, and to all administrative professionals that are the front line of service to our schools and communities! I was so glad to be able to interview three of my favorite people...Secretary Linda Bowker, PEIMS Clerk Yvonda Quarles, and Receptionist/ISS Aide Liz Daley. These women tell of their dedication to service to our community...and they each answer the Second Question!
Nobody asked I know, but I turned seventeen last month! And having turned this age between your supposed innocent teenage-days (sweet sixteen) and the start of your adulting (legalistic eighteen), I figured it was a bright opportunity to share what I was grateful for and also what I regret as a seventeen-year-old. Things I mentioned on this episode range from regrets I had as an high-schooler and just a teen in general. Enjoy these fifteen minutes of talking to myself about things I cannot change seeing as it isn't just a random episode but the Season Finale of season one of the podcast! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coask/message

“This week we take a trip back to 2016 and review The Edge Of Seventeen on Bluray.”
This is a great movie, and this was a really fun episode, but Jordan would like to make the following important note about the recording: Apologies for the low battery fire alarm beeping in the background of this WHOLE episode. I mean what was I supposed to do? Stop recording and go replace the batteries? Instead of just continuing forward and hoping that the mic wouldn't pick it up? Well I was wrong and you can definitely hear it. The whole time. In addition the crying toddlers. Do me a favor? Blame it on COVID-19, the perfect scapegoat of our times. "I had the worst thought: I've got to spend the rest of my life with myself." Just as the school year is starting to wind down, JJ and Steve take one more trip back to high school with 2016's The Edge of Seventeen. First time director Kelly Fremon Craig is at the top of the class with her original script. The theater department is also stocked with talent: Hailey Steinfeld, Haley Lu Richardson, Blake Jenner, Kyra Sedgwick, and Woody Harrelson. Falling into solid Dramedy territory, this is not a typical teen comedy. This rewarding character piece will appeal to teen and twenty-somethings, while also delivering a smartly written story that will entertain adults. In episode forty-two of movies imo., Ben, Brandon, and Daniel yell over each other about Bo Burnham's EIGHTH GRADE, and then they yell some more. Afterwards they move on to discussing other stories about adolescent growing pains in the lives of teenage girls, namely Marielle Heller's THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL, Kelly Fremon Craig's THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN, and Catherine Breillat's FAT GIRL. Ben cackles over axe murder, Daniel breaks down mentally while defending his love of Elsie Fisher, and Brandon disagrees with a fundamental direction where Burnham takes his protagonist. The question I have is is advertising even that important anymore. I hear an Infinity War/Spiderman movie is going to be out in 2 months and I'm there. I don't need advertising 4 another movie I would say the same for a Star Wars movie I know it's coming out I don't need to see it trailer all I need to see is the movie. Wanted to get your thoughts on this. Please keep up the good work been listening to you since episode 3.” Paul I wonders if the trailer could “tease the disappearance of Spider-Man and the chaos that is left behind. Perhaps Tony Stark hands his Spider-Man suit from Infinity War to someone else.....it almost negates the need for any special abilities? It doesn't have to reveal how he returns until full trailers after the release of avengers 4 if he returns at all! Is it possible that Marvel have duped us all and have recast a New Spider-Man such as Miles Morales?” To submit questions to the mailbag, send them to peter@slashfilm.com.
