Since the UK Supreme Court ruling clarifying the definition of woman in the Equality Act, trans activists have decided 'transmen' now matter and are using this tiny cohort of women to claim sex-based public toilet arrangements cannot work due to them as a 'gotcha' against the ruling. We discuss the features of the 'gotcha' and how each one fails. We also discuss the superficiality of transgenderism, how photos or TikTok's don't mean someone 'passes' in real life, Gendered Intelligence's lies to 'transmen', the trans to detrans to trans attention-grift arc, and transgenderism's fundamental relation to the Freudian / Lacanian concept of castration. Plus, we call for prosecutions for GBH and conspiracy to commit child abuse, how ‘bottom surgery' for ‘transmen' is the Western version of FGM, and how the gay third sector sold out gay people yet we're somehow meant to pretend we're a community.

Did you know there are over 500,000 cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the United States and 230 million worldwide? This shocking reality persists into the 21st century, driven by cultural and religious traditions. Dr. Maria Viola Sanchez, founder of the nonprofit organization Stop the Cut Now, joins Shelley Johnson and Kathy Tuccaro in this episode to discuss her mission to eradicate this heinous practice and raise awareness about its devastating effects on women and girls. Dr. Sanchez shares her extensive expertise and experiences, emphasizing the pain and trauma inflicted upon victims, many of whom are subjected to this procedure as young as infancy, Throughout the episode, we delve into the painful realities of FGM, the challenges faced in changing societal norms, and the importance of education and legislation to combat this human rights violation. For many Americans, the assumption is that female genital mutilation – the process of partially or fully cutting female external genitalia – is an outdated, old-world tradition that is no longer practiced. Sadly, this isn't the case, and more than 200 million girls and women today have undergone the traumatic and life-altering practice. The U.S. isn't immune either to this practice, with surgeries usually occurring under the radar in smaller, private practices. We speak with Jaha Dukureh, a victim of FGM and global advocate, to get a better understanding on why FGM persists and what's being done to curb these numbers. Sex is one of the few things in life that is available to everyone and is free. But achieving enjoyable sex is not possible for many. Some people are held back by fear, ignorance or culture - others don't know or understand their rights around sex. For years public health campaigns focused on warning people about the downsides of sex - danger, disease and death - but increasingly the work is focused on the reasons people have sex. We're in Brazil where we meet Ana Autoestima. She's a ‘virtual friend' who provides positive advice about sex to women living some of the poorest neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro. We also visit Iraq to find out how a project is helping women who've suffered from female genital mutilation or FGM to enjoy their bodies and sexuality. S5E1 Female Genital Mutilation: Can we achieve zero tolerance with zero coverage?

Media Storm

This week, we've decided to cover a topic that's hugely underreported in the mainstream media: FGM. Yesterday was FGM Zero Tolerance Day, so you may have seen a (very small) flurry of articles about the topic - but this week's guests say that it needs to be covered all year round. FGM stands for Female Genital Mutilation - the deliberate cutting or removal of a female's external genitalia. It is currently documented in 92 countries around the world, the highest share in Africa - countries including Somalia, Egypt, Mali, Sudan and Ethiopia. It is also found in Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and in diaspora communities in the West. Over 200 million women globally have been subjected to FGM. This should be a media storm. But instead, there's near silence. So we've asked FGM survivors why the coverage is lacking, what they need from the media, and what we can do to help. Joining us is Dr Leyla Hussein, psychotherapist and award-winning international campaigner leading the fight against FGM, and Ifrah Ahmed, Somali-Irish humanitarian worker, activist, and founder of the Ifrah Foundation, a charity with the aim of the absolute abandonment of FGM in Somalia. Her campaign resulted in compulsory training for public sector works so they could identify and help girls at risk.  Ten years on, Fahma, who remains as dedicated to tackling gender and racial inequality reflects on the roots of her activism - which started when she was only 13 - and how it was nurtured by a very special teacher and talks about the reactions of her Somali community to her efforts, what she wished she had realised about the career opportunities that were open to her and why being the eldest of 10 children is so important to her.

In exchange for large sums of money, attendees from as far away as Kenya and the US were expecting to hear from high-profile speakers such as Richard Branson, Denis O'Brien and Auma Obama. But what greeted them was far more underwhelming. The event was organised by Sean Collins-McCarthy, a self-described “Social Entrepreneur, Strategy Advisor, Filmmaker and Media Pioneer”.Irish Times journalist Olivia Kelly investigated and tells In the News what went on behind the scenes at Cycle of Life.Presented by Bernice Harrison. This week on the show, I'm speaking to activist and all-round incredible human being, Payzee Mahmod. I learned of the amazing work Payzee is doing, and her story after learning about the devastating brutal killing of Payzee's older sister, Banaz Mahmod in a so-called “honour-killing” in 2006.  Banaz was a young woman with a huge appetite for life, laughter and kindness, and her death had far-reaching and long-lasting impacts for all those who knew and loved her, and also for the world at large. Payzee Mahmod is a survivor and activist tackling gender based violence. As a British Kurd with lived experience, she is a passionate advocate and campaigner raising awareness about harmful practices including child marriage, female genital mutilation, virginity testing and hymenoplasty. After being forced into a child marriage aged 16, Payzee lead the 3 year long campaign to change the legal age of marriage from 16 to 18, in England and Wales (Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Bill, 2023).Payzee now uses her platform to spread awareness on “honour” based abuse, child marriage and promoting the importance of gender inclusion and raising money for good causes.Just a little trigger warning, in this episode, we talk about some difficult topics including loss of a sibling, abusive relationships and FGM. There is also mention of suicide. So if you need to return to this episode at a later date, or skip it altogether, please do. Support the show

Today, she's part of a wider movement that fights violence against women and girls and vehemently opposes trivializing honor violence, the Islamic veil, FGM etc. She experiences the atmosphere in Germany in regards to discussing these matters as stifling as cultural relativism and accusations of racism are used to shut women down. On the show this week, I'm speaking with Reem Gaafar, author of the novel, A Mouthful of Salt. This book is a really stunning, powerful story of a community in the north of Sudan, struck by calamity and loss. The book opens with a devastating scene of a boy gone missing and presumed to have drown, and the panic and grief in the wake of his search. Reem explores so much in this novel, including motherhood, the power of education, othering, community structures, tribalism and so much more. In this episode, we talk about all the themes Reem writes about, and the current war in Sudan, which has, at time of recording been going on for over 1 year. The war has led to millions of people being displaced, with nowhere to escape the violence, and over 18 million people are experiencing extreme hunger. As a trigger warning, we also talk about some sensitive issues including FGM, infertility, death, loss of children and trauma. If you don't feel comfortable hearing about these issues right now, please do consider listening to another episode again and perhaps revisiting at a time that is better for you.   Reem Gaafar is a writer, physician and filmmaker.
