To track or not to track? Now that technology on our phones makes it so easy, many parents are tracking their children's whereabouts. If children don't have a smart phone, many people use a GPS tracker device do to the same thing. There are even children's trainers available with a special slot to insert the device. But have we thought about the reasons why? What are the benefits or dangers of tracking children, and if you do track, at what point do you stop? Anita Rani is joined by Clare Fernyhough and Esther Walker. Some fat dissolving agents and skin rejuvenation treatments being injected into women currently have the ‘same regulatory classification as ball-point pens'. That's according to evidence heard by the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee as part of a new inquiry into the potential harms of hair and beauty products and treatments. Thousands of women could be potentially experiencing harm from these products and going undocumented. Ashton Collins, co-founder of Save Face, the register for safe medical aesthetic practitioners, and Victoria Brownlie, chief policy and sustainability officer at The British Beauty Council join Anita. The latest series of The Traitors has sparked controversy after two black women, Netty and Judy, were the first to leave – one ‘murdered' by the Traitors and the other banished at the roundtable. The debate goes beyond the game- is it exposing unconscious bias and raising bigger questions? Do reality TV shows like this hold up a mirror to society, revealing uncomfortable truths around racism, misogyny, and ageism? Author and arts columnist at the Independent Micha Frazer-Carroll and freelance writer Chloe Laws, who have both written on this topic and are both fans of the show, discuss.A group of religious leaders and a Member of Parliament in The Gambia have tabled a bill seeking to overturn the country's ban on female genital mutilation or FGM. The matter is now before the country's Supreme Court and is due to resume later this month. The case follows reports that two baby girls bled to death after undergoing FGM in the country last year. Rights groups have condemned the move, describing it as a violation. One of those groups is the African Women's Rights Advocates - we hear from Mam Lisa Camara from the group, along with BBC Correspondent for West Africa Thomas Naadi, based in Accra. And we nod to Claudette Colvin, who helped end racial segregation in the US by refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person in Alabama. She has died at the age of 86. Her protest and subsequent arrest was largely unknown until the details were included in a book in 2009. Far more well known is an event that happened nine months later when Rosa Parks famously defied the bus laws. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Kirsty Starkey

STARMER'S BANANA REPUBLIC | HE MUST BE DEPOSED  #Starmer #BananaRepublic #UKPolitics #BBCBias #JonGaunt #JonGauntTV #Live #FreeSpeech #HateCrimeLaws #BBCBias  Today's live show lays out the case that under Keir Starmer, Britain is being reshaped away from constitutional democracy and toward something far more dangerous — a system where power flows downward from the state, not upward from the people.  This is not about personality. It's about how Starmer governs, what he tolerates, and what his system incentivises . We examine how Starmer's leadership is marked by: • Elections treated as an inconvenience rather than a mandate • Governing while sidelining or ignoring the House of Commons • Abandoning manifesto commitments once power is secured • Criminalising "offensive" political speech • Expanding police powers through vague and subjective hate crime laws • Undermining trial by jury in favour of administrative efficiency • Handing Ofcom sweeping control over online speech • Regulating dissent via unelected bodies instead of Parliament We also address selective enforcement and cultural engineering: • Ideological "re-education" of boys on misogyny • While ignoring or downplaying Pakistani grooming gangs • FGM, forced marriage, sectarian coercion, and parallel legal cultures • Equality before the law replaced by political fear and silence And the wider system surrounding Starmer: • Media narrative control and framing, especially the role of the BBC • Loyal but incompetent appointments beneath the leadership • Weakening of the family and replacement with the state • Denial and rewriting of British history as shame • Expansion of welfare dependency to create political compliance • Use of foreign war — Ukraine / Russia — as moral cover and domestic distraction This is not left vs right. It's Keir Starmer vs democratic consent. What does "deposed" mean? It means politically removed — through Parliament, party mechanisms, elections, and sustained lawful public pressure. Not violence. Not chaos. Democracy correcting itself before it's too late.  If you think this case is wrong, challenge it. If you think it's exaggerated, defend the record. But don't pretend this is normal.

What if the "perfect life" is actually the most convincing hiding place for emptiness? In this episode of Wickedly Smart Women, host Anjel B. Hartwell welcomes Sylvia Resnick, a fulfillment and purpose coach for high-achieving women. Sylvia shares how a lifelong ache for connection shaped her drive to achieve. The conversation also goes deeper into the tension between honoring cultural traditions and evolving practices that harm women, including the urgent reality of female genital mutilation and how Sylvia's organization, Empower Her, is working from within community partnership to create change through education, support, and empowerment.   What You Will Learn: Why "looking successful" can coexist with feeling emotionally empty. How early experiences of not feeling seen can quietly shape adult identity, ambition, and relationship patterns. The hidden motivation behind perfectionism: trying to earn love, belonging, and "enoughness." Why external achievements don't automatically create self-worth. How a single experience of deep community can interrupt lifelong loneliness and recalibrate what matters. What true connection can feel like in the body. How indigenous culture can offer profound healing while still containing traditions that require conscious evolution. A grounded explanation of FGM in the Maasai context, including the rite-of-passage framing and the high human cost. Why sustainable change must be led from within a community, not imposed by outsiders. How education becomes a protection strategy for women and girls. What it means to "bridge two worlds" in coaching: bringing connection back to high achievers while also resourcing underserved communities. How travel can become transformational when it's relationship-centered rather than consumption-centered. In conversation with Bianca Knight   In honour of South Africa's National Women's Month, Africa Rights Talk presents “Breaking the Silence: Women, Rights, and Mental Health in Africa”, a powerful conversation exploring the overlooked but urgent intersection of gender justice and mental well-being. Across the continent, women face compounded challenges gender-based violence, poverty, systemic inequality, and cultural stigma  that profoundly affect their mental health, yet these realities remain largely absent from policy and rights-based discourse. Bianca Knight, Project Officer at the Centre for Human Rights' Women's Rights Unit, joins host Victoria Amaechi to unpack why mental health is not just a personal struggle but a fundamental human rights issue. Drawing from her advocacy work on the Maputo Protocol, Bianca sheds light on the cultural taboos, under-resourced systems, and generational patterns that perpetuate silence. Together, they imagine a feminist future where care, healing, and psychosocial well-being are at the heart of gender equality movements. This candid conversation blends personal vulnerability with policy insight, challenging us to destigmatise mental health, integrate it into Africa's women's rights agenda, and create spaces where women can thrive, not just survive. Bianca Knight completed her BA LLB and LLM in Multidisciplinary Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. In 2024, she obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), and she is set to begin her MBA at Hult International Business School in Boston in September 2025. Bianca practiced as an attorney for three years before transitioning into academia and advocacy, driven by her passion for education and social justice. From 2021 to 2023, she lectured constitutional law and the law of succession at Varsity College in Pretoria. During her LLM studies, Bianca sharpened her focus on women's and children's rights, which led her to join the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. Since 2022, she has served as a Project Officer in the Women's Rights Unit (WRU), where she supports efforts to advance the implementation of the Maputo Protocol across Africa. Her work includes coordinating state and shadow report trainings, and contributing to projects focused on child marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), obstetric violence and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).     This conversation was recorded on 7 August 2025.       Youtube: https://youtu.be/MpQFogU6lns Music and news extracts: Inner Peace by Mike Chino https://soundcloud.com/mike-chinoCreative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b...Music promoted by Audio Libraryhttps://youtu.be/0nI6qJeqFcc Limitless https://stock.adobe.com/za/search/audio?k=45259238

Sadly, this isn't the case, and more than 200 million girls and women today have undergone the traumatic and life-altering practice. The U.S. isn't immune either to this practice, with surgeries usually occurring under the radar in smaller, private practices. This week, we've decided to cover a topic that's hugely underreported in the mainstream media: FGM. Yesterday was FGM Zero Tolerance Day, so you may have seen a (very small) flurry of articles about the topic - but this week's guests say that it needs to be covered all year round. FGM stands for Female Genital Mutilation - the deliberate cutting or removal of a female's external genitalia. It is currently documented in 92 countries around the world, the highest share in Africa - countries including Somalia, Egypt, Mali, Sudan and Ethiopia. It is also found in Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and in diaspora communities in the West. Over 200 million women globally have been subjected to FGM. This should be a media storm. But instead, there's near silence. So we've asked FGM survivors why the coverage is lacking, what they need from the media, and what we can do to help. Joining us is Dr Leyla Hussein, psychotherapist and award-winning international campaigner leading the fight against FGM, and Ifrah Ahmed, Somali-Irish humanitarian worker, activist, and founder of the Ifrah Foundation, a charity with the aim of the absolute abandonment of FGM in Somalia. This week on the show, I'm speaking to activist and all-round incredible human being, Payzee Mahmod. I learned of the amazing work Payzee is doing, and her story after learning about the devastating brutal killing of Payzee's older sister, Banaz Mahmod in a so-called “honour-killing” in 2006.  Banaz was a young woman with a huge appetite for life, laughter and kindness, and her death had far-reaching and long-lasting impacts for all those who knew and loved her, and also for the world at large. Payzee Mahmod is a survivor and activist tackling gender based violence. As a British Kurd with lived experience, she is a passionate advocate and campaigner raising awareness about harmful practices including child marriage, female genital mutilation, virginity testing and hymenoplasty. After being forced into a child marriage aged 16, Payzee lead the 3 year long campaign to change the legal age of marriage from 16 to 18, in England and Wales (Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Bill, 2023).Payzee now uses her platform to spread awareness on “honour” based abuse, child marriage and promoting the importance of gender inclusion and raising money for good causes.Just a little trigger warning, in this episode, we talk about some difficult topics including loss of a sibling, abusive relationships and FGM. There is also mention of suicide. So if you need to return to this episode at a later date, or skip it altogether, please do. Support the show
